The University of Houston System plays a transformational role in the economic development and well-being of the Greater Houston area and its surrounding regions. Through 10 public institutions, the UH System provides programs and services that meet the higher education, workforce, health and cultural needs of our growing communities. Providing these resources in an affordable, accessible and reliable manner has become our hallmark. Each UH System institution equips students with the education and real-life learning experiences that prepare them to succeed in their chosen professions and become enlightened and productive members of society. This Accountability Report presents the challenges we have faced and the success we have achieved in our quest to serve. I am pleased to submit it for your consideration.

The University of Houston System is a group of 10 public institutions of higher learning in the Houston area that share common goals and are governed by a Board of Regents. The UH System comprises four universities and six multi-institution instructional sites that offer degrees in partnership with the universities. In total, they serve 76,000 students of diverse backgrounds. The University of Houston is the largest and most comprehensive institution of the UH System. Relationships among UHS institutions are collegial and collaborative. Credits transfer easily from one institution to another, and students move freely from one campus’ library to another. Each UHS institution has a distinct mission; together, the institutions’ missions and programs complement and support one another.

University of Houston The largest university in Houston and the third largest in Texas, UH is a nationally competitive, comprehensive research university offering undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, distance and continuing education studies programs. UH, the oldest of the four UH System universities, has been recognized as a Tier One institution by the Carnegie Foundation for its high level of research activity and is home to a Phi Beta Kappa chapter — America’s most prestigious honor society. In addition, The University has launched a college of medicine to meet the health care needs of underserved populations in the region and state. UH has a yearly $6.4 billion economic impact on the Greater Houston area, over 47,000 students enrolled, awards more than 10,000 degrees annually and has more than 300,000 alumni, many of whom live and work in Texas. 6

University of Houston–Clear Lake UHCL has been opening doors for accessible education since 1974 and continues to increase its regional university rankings, serving as a destination for lifelong learning, economic growth and global impact. Located in southeast Houston on a beautiful 524-acre campus, UHCL serves more than 9,000 students. UHCL offers more than 80 programs including undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs from its four colleges, with additional locations in Pearland and the Texas Medical Center. More than 73,000 alumni are leaders in their fields and include CEOs, scientists, artists, astronauts and more.

University of Houston–Downtown Located in the heart of Houston, UHD educates more than 15,000 students annually and has an alumni base of over 51,000. Graduates emerge from the institution prepared to serve as leaders in law enforcement, business, science, education, nonprofit management, the arts and other industries. Students benefit from its convenient campus (accessible by light rail and from the city’s Bayou Greenways) and curriculum delivering real-world learning experiences. In recent years, UHD’s economic impact on the region totaled $2 billion. With a growing campus— including the new College of Sciences & Technology Building—and bolstered graduation rates, that sum should continue to grow as UHD approaches its 50th year of serving Houstonians.

The new UHV University South STEM building will open in spring 2021.

University of Houston–Victoria UHV offers more than 80 academic programs to students living in the Gulf Coast region and beyond. An instructional site in Katy and a highly ranked distance education program expand UHV’s educational outreach. The Victoria campus continues to grow with a residence hall that opened in 2020, a STEM building and a multiuse facility that will be completed in spring 2021, and a health and wellness center expected to open in 2023. UHV is a member of the Houston Guided Pathways to Success initiative to increase higher education completion rates.
