Needless to say, researching this article came as quite a surprise to find that this childhood fave of mine may have just added some healthy benefits to my early years, growing up in the village with access to so many fruits, especially the Rose Apple.

A TROPICAL JEWEL WITH ABUNDANT HEALTH BENEFITS Despite their name, rose apples are not related to roses or apples but earned their name from their faint rose-like scent and apple-like consistency. They are also known as Malabar plum or poma rosa. Their edible fruit is shaped like a small pear with crisp, watery flesh. It tastes best when picked fresh and eaten immediately. Their yellow, mealy flesh can be eaten raw or cooked, and their creamy-white flowers can be candied to eat or cut to decorate.

Primarily ornamental, these trees are valued for their seasonal flowers. They are not commercially cultivated due to their thin, easily bruised nature and short shelf life. Instead, Rose Apples are foraged from wild and home garden trees as a seasonal delicacy, utilized for medicinal purposes and in various culinary preparations.
