What
Apprenticeship Background
The national reform of apprenticeship during 2017/18 raised the qualification profile to have the same credibility as traditional academic qualifications As a result, apprenticeship qualifications were developed and vary from level 2 (entry level) through to level 7 (Masters equivalent). The reform also meant that large employers were required to hold funds (called the levy) which can only be reclaimed to support the cost of an apprenticeship qualification. Therefore, managers and staff should firstly consider apprenticeship opportunities when assessing learning needs to ensure the Trust can maximise its’ levy.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship combines academic learning with work based practical application in a job through a work-based training programme. An Apprenticeship is no longer focused on the ages 16-24 years old; it is now open to people of all ages with varied levels of previous qualifications. Apprenticeships in healthcare include clinical and nonclinical roles. The duration can take anything from one to four years to complete depending on which level of apprenticeship you are completing.
What is 20% Off the Job Training?
All learners that are enrolled on an apprenticeship course from May 2017 will need to spend 20% of their contracted hours on off the job activities. Off-the-job training is defined as learning which is undertaken outside of the normal day-to-day working environment and leads towards the achievement of an apprenticeship. This can include training that is delivered at the apprentice’s normal place of work but must not be delivered as part of their normal working duties. This means that learners should be spending 20% of their working week (a minimum of 6hrs per week) on the activities listed below:
Coaching sessions
Independent research
Industry visits
In-house training
Learner support to write assignments
Lectures/workshops
Team meetings
Shadowing
Mentoring
Online learning
Role play / Simulation exercises
Supervision with employer
One-to-ones
Writing assignments (study time)
Completing ‘Off the Job Training Log’
Departmental rotation
Work shadow of a colleague
Visits to suppliers
