Dean’s Message - 50 Years: A retrospective

Almost 50 years ago, on a warm fall day, I set foot on this campus after my mother got a call saying that UHCO had one slot left for a prospective student. She responded: “He will be there.”

Those four magical words in 1968 got me into optometry and I have never looked back. UHCO has given me tremendous opportunities, from conducting extensive research in myopia to the discovery of my wife, Janice.

As a profession, we’ve made much progress over the last five decades.

Optometrists are now the frontline primary care providers for vision care.

It’s a very different time from when I began my career and it is the best time to be in the profession.

Here at the college, our diverse group of vision scientists are studying normal and abnormal visual processes, as well as inherited and acquired diseases and disorders of the eye and visual pathways. They work to prevent, or slow the progression of visual loss using a variety of approaches ranging from cellular and molecular, to behavioral or optical interventions.

I am proud of the wonderful work they do every day, especially our brilliant young faculty who are rapidly making their mark in the research labs, in the classrooms, and in our clinical services.

Inside our clinics, here on campus, in Houston, the Dallas Fort Worth area and beyond, our faculty clinicians, staff, students and externs are involved in providing compassionate care to individuals who otherwise would have no place to go. Our collective impact isn’t just in monetary benefits to underserved patients. Each time we detect a health care problem through the eye, we are taking a step towards prevention and maintenance for that patient and their family. We are saving lives and reducing healthcare costs that benefit us all in the long term.

Our future lies in collaborative work and interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare. I am optimistic about the next 50 years and we will tackle new frontiers in vision care.

To each one of you who has supported me in my journey, I want to say thank you. Your friendship, trust and commitment to excellence has made UHCO a wonderful place to work, teach and grow.

I am honored to have spent my entire career at UHCO and I’ve seen firsthand the positive changes we have made in the lives of our students, our alumni and our patients. As I transition out of the deanship in June and resume my role as a faculty member, I look forward to participating in the life of the college in different yet still meaningful ways. My door will still be open and if you find yourself on campus, please drop in for a cup of coffee.

UHCO has become the first optometry school in the nation to use the Anatomage Table, a 3D anatomy table that uses digital cadavers to teach anatomy, designated solely for the optometry program. The world’s first virtual dissection table allows users to visualize anatomy as they would on a human cadaver. To watch the video and read the full story, click here!

David A. Berntsen, OD, ’02, PhD, has been selected as the Golden-Golden Professor at UHCO. Dr. Berntsen is an Associate Professor at UHCO whose research interests include myopia, contact lenses, and aberrations of the eye. The professorship was endowed in 2010 by Dennis Golden, OD, ’77, and Dixon Golden, OD, ’77. Full Story here!

After Hurricane Harvey’s paralyzing grip on the Houston community, UHCO optometrists and ophthalmologists banded together, Enhancing Vision for Lfe, at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

College Highlights

The American Optometric Association Foundation awarded UHCO a national grant through the 2018 Healthy Eyes Healthy Children (HEHC) Community Grant Program. The “See Clearly Now” Project will provide grant funding to Rebekah Montes, OD, ‘15, and her colleagues to promote awareness of vision issues and ocular health within an underserved community by highlighting the importance of yearly exams with an optometrist.

Mindy Fox, ophthalmic technician in the Ocular Diagnostic/ Medical Eye Service, received the UH President’s Excellence Award, recognizing meritorious service, dedication and contribution to the University, in the technical/service/craft division. She and other recipients were honored at a ceremony on Aug. 13, 2018.

UHCO’s internationally recognized graduate program in Physiological Optics and Vision Science has 30 UHCO faculty members engaged in basic, clinical, or translational research on the visual system. These faculty also teach basic science courses in the OD professional program and in Fall 2018, they trained 33 PhD students, two masters’ students, 12 OD/MS students, and 10 postdoctoral fellows in their laboratories.

Presentations and publications • Laura Pardon, OD, MS, was the recipient of the Best Student Scientific Presentation of the 2017 American Academy of Optometry (AAO) annual meeting. Her presentation was entitled, “Quantification and Localization of Peripapillary Vascular Changes in Optic Disc Edema Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.” She was recognized at the 2018 AAO meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

• The American Academy of Optometry awarded the Julius F. Neumueller Award in Optics to Angeline Nguyen, OD, ‘18, and Jenna L. Wayne, OD, ‘18, at the 2018 meeting. The award recognized their paper based on original research carried out while they were participating in UHCO’s NEI-funded summer research program for OD students. This is the fourth time in the last six years that UHCO-trained ODs have won the award.

• Vivien Coulson-Thomas, PhD, UHCO Assistant Professor, recently received a $1.9M grant from the National Eye Institute. Her research examines how the hyaluronan creates limbal stem cells which are necessary for corneal repair after injury, and whether she can create new stem cells in the lab. This revolutionizing research will hopefully improve the lives of patients with limbal stem cell deficiency.

• Myopia research studying mechanisms and prevention of near-sightedness are at the forefront at UHCO where research from the labs is being applied in the clinic. UHCO researchers have been carrying out NEI funded basic (Earl Smith, OD, ‘72, PhD, ‘78 and Lisa Ostrin, OD, ‘05, PhD, ‘06) and clinical (David Berntsen, OD, ‘02, PhD, and Ruth Manny, OD, ‘75, PhD, ‘81) research. Faculty are also doing foundation funded (Smith), UH funded (Ostrin), and industry funded research (The Ocular Surface Institute, Eric Ritchey, OD, PhD). In 2018, Kathryn Richdale, OD, PhD, an Associate Professor who joined the faculty in 2016, initiated, a Myopia Management Service at UHCO.

Research Highlights

• An analysis of highly cited articles by optometry school faculty and researchers during the 2000-2016 period, presented at the American Academy of Optometry annual meeting, found that UHCO was ranked #1 among US institutions with the most cited optometry faculty and #2 worldwide.

A study by Lisa Ostrin, OD, ‘05, PhD, ‘06, Assistant Professor, Kaleb Abbott, OD, ‘18, and Hope Queener, MS, published in Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics has attracted media attention, including from NPR. The study found that wearing glasses after sunset to block blue light such as that coming from LED-based devices including smart phones, tablets and flat screen TVs may help to regulate sleep patterns.

• The American Academy of Optometry Foundation (AAOF) awarded the William C. Ezell Fellowships to four UHCO PhD candidates in 2018: Gareth Hastings, BOptom; Laura Pardon, OD, MS; Maria Walker, OD, MS, and Suraj Upadhyaya, OD. For two of the recipients, Maria Walker and Suraj Upadhyaya this was the 2nd year that they were honored with this prestigious award.

• UHCO Assistant Professor Vijaykrishna Raghunathan, PhD, received $765,000 from the National Eye Institute (NEI) to examine an understudied contributor to glaucoma – the ebb and flow of aqueous humor, the fluid in the anterior segment of the eye whose regulation controls intraocular pressure.

Ezell Fellows 2018

The Surgery Center and nJoy Vision Laser Procedure Center at UHCO, is dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care, excellent customer service, and innovative methods for best practices.

Surgery Center Established in 2012, the Ambulatory Surgery Center continues to deliver the highest standard of care, excellent customer service through personal attention, and ensuring innovative methods for best practices. During 2017-2018, five additional surgeons joined the team: Albert Lin, MD; Christopher Henry, MD; Tien Wong, MC; Fred Mattioli, MS; and Mirwat Sami, MC. Furthermore, due to the support of our referral network, total referrals increased by approx. 52%, while pre-op consultations increased by approx. 34%, resulting in greater observations and pre/postoperative care for our OPT III and IV students. Also, the surgery center had a 6% increase in total number of surgical cases in 2018.

In 2018 Ryan Patel, OD, was appointed as the departmental director for the center. He also maintains a dual role, acting as an assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Services at UHCO.

nJoy Vision

Surgical Services

nJoy Vision has a fresh, new approach to refractive surgical procedures and is committed to using world-class technologies to customize treatment plans for optimal results. Uniting optometric physicians and surgeons who seek excellence in surgical vision technology and education for the good of their patients, nJoy Vision takes pride in providing trustworthy, surgical options, education and information tailored to individual needs and results.

Over the past four years, nJoy doctors have provided education for over 1,000 optometric physicians and students, actively supporting student activities and hosting many LASIK and cataract surgery educational events. Each year, nJoy Vision participates in the UHCO “Out the Door” event, graduation banquet, and UH athletic sponsorships. nJoy also shows support to the UHCO community by providing live surgical education to students and referring physicians, which in turn, helps support better educational programs for the community.

UH is home to one of the most revered and visionary eye care centers in the country - the University Eye Institute (UEI). Located in the heart of Houston on the UH Campus within UHCO, the UEI comprises five eye departments, more than 15 sub-specialty services, and is the only school of optometry in the nation with an on-site ambulatory surgical center. Throughout the last two years, the UEI’s clinical capabilities have continued to expand.

New Services Myopia Management Service Backed with more than two decades of research led by Earl L. Smith III, OD, ‘72, PhD, ‘78, the Myopia Management Service has significantly grown its patient base, offering myopic children customized treatments plans designed to slow progression, including Ortho-K hard lenses and multifocal contact lenses.

University Eye Institute

The service, led by Katheryn Richdale, OD, PhD, and newly appointed Cornea and Contact Lens (CCLS) Service Director, Matt Kauffman, OD, ‘12, has attracted significant media attention focused on the myopic epidemic.

Electrodiagnostic Service The Electrodiagnostic Service groups within the Ocular Diagnostic and Medical Eyecare Service at the UEI features a VERIS multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). VERIS is a top-of-the-line instrument for gathering mfERG data. With the addition of the mfERG, we can provide full-service electrodiagnostic care for diseases, including unexplained vision loss and plaquenil toxicity examinations. The new technology enhances other services offered including: VEP, multifocal VEP, EOG, full-field ERG, pattern ERG, as well as OCT, OCT-A, and color/visual field testing. With the latest students calling for an increase use of the mfERG in an electrodiagnostic setting, we are excited to offer this service.

The mfERG will be administered by Wendy Harrison, OD, PhD. Prior to joining the UHCO faculty and UEI clinicians, she ran one of the largest electrodiagnostic services in the Phoenix area.

The UEI has further expanded its relationships with Christian Community Services and the City of Houston to provide eye care for children throughout Houston. In 2018 alone, clinical faculty and UHCO students provided comprehensive eye exams to 763 children and dispensed 675 pairs of glasses from 32 schools.

With continuous focus to enrich and expand the scope of programming, the UHCO Continuing Education team closed the 2017 and 2018 years with advanced courses, growing partnerships, and cultivated relationships with our audience. All of these aspects are important to the team’s mission to put forth the latest education to further enhance daily patient care offerings. The team is exceptionally proud of the growing collaborative relationships and the opportunity to provide our expertise across the nation. The CE team continues to streamline processes to create a smooth experience for all participants using frequent communication and offering the best customer service possible. Alumnus of the Year

Roger L Boltz, OD, ‘72, PhD, ‘78, received the 2018 Alumnus of the Year of Award for UHCO. In fall 1966, a young student from Orlando arrived at UHCO, not thinking that this would be his home for the next 52 years. He began his career as a faculty member in 1978 and held a number of administrative positions including Professor, Associate Dean of Professional Studies, Interim Dean, Associate Professor, and Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. Dr. Boltz retired in May 2018 and when asked about his legacy, he stated, “I feel I’ve helped the place run, advance and helped make it the best school it can be. Personally, if people have good thoughts when they hear my name that will be enough.”

Michael Kalloniatis, BSc (Optom), MSc (Optom), PhD, ‘88, received the 2017 Alumnus of the Year of Award for UHCO. Born in Greece, Michael Kalloniatis migrated to Melbourne with his family in 1965. Upon completion of his optometry degree at the University of Melbourne in 1981, he continued his studies with a Master’s degree evaluating the visual characteristics of low vision children. Kalloniatis then undertook his PhD at UHCO, studying color vision processing in the monkey visual system. After receiving his doctorate he remained in the US, accepting an appointment as a National Institute of Health Research Fellow at the University of Texas. With expertise in retinal anatomy and neurochemistry, Kalloniatis is a highly experienced optometrist with a range of academic and research experience who has maintained clinical practice throughout his career.

Foundation for Education and Research in Vision

FERV’s mission is to support the UH College of Optometry.

The Foundation for Education and Research in Vision continued to support the College and its students in 2017 and 2018. FERV hosted the 9th annual Anderson Fair Scholarship Fundraiser generating over $35,000 for student scholarships. With the help of alumni, faculty and staff, this event continues to grow. Outside of this event, FERV works with our alumni to increase all of the class scholarships – the goal is to fully endow each class scholarship over time.

Sarah Wilting, Class of 2021, received the Steve and Susan Thacker Scholarship in 2018. She is a native of Brady, TX, and a graduate of Southwestern University. Sarah met with Steve and Susan to express her gratitude for the scholarship she received.

UHCO offers a full array of student programs with opportunities for leadership, service, professional development and exciting activities.

These organizations help students integrate with the optometric family at UHCO and the greater professional community. With 15 student organizations providing community service and optometric care, there are numerous social activities to offer something for everyone.

Giving to UHCO

Thanks to the generosity of our alumni, friends, and industry partners, UHCO has surpassed its campaign goal of $20 million ahead of the 2020 target date. In addition, UHCO now has over 100 scholarship endowments allowing students to focus more on their studies and worry less about debt. With this success, UHCO’s work does not stop here. The college’s current fundraising priorities are: • Update equipment in our clinical services • Support for indigent care • Increase the dollar value of scholarship endowments and professorships UHCO has strong partnerships with over 30 major corporations in the vision care industry and over 100 optometry-related businesses engage with the college’s various programs annually. Corporate giving forms 30% to 40% of UHCO’s total fundraising goal and is set to grow in coming years.

The recent partnership with the S. R. Marco Foundation is a great example of building meaningful relationships with corporations and foundations.
