Pledge & Officer Messages I
pledge to uphold the Objects of Circle K International, to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership, to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of humankind’s potential.
Hey CKI fam! I'm Glenda, the Secretary of UH CKI, and I take care a lot of the background stuff like membership points and weekly emails! Although I haven't been able to make it to the general meetings, it's been an exciting few months getting to know all the new members that joined and see them help make a difference through our events. My personal favorite was Trunk 'r Treat this month where we got to interact with all the kids and dress up in costumes. It was incredibly rewarding to hear from the parents how much they and their kids enjoyed it. I hope everyone, whether or not if they are active in CKI, finds a special place in their heart for UH CKI like how I did and genuinely like to serve and lead the community with friends if you don't already. :') - Glenda Cheng, Secretary
Hey everyone! My name is Vincent and I'm the Editor for UH CKI! We had an amazing fall semester, full of wonderful memories and service events. From events like general meetings to Trunk 'R Treat, we've had an amazing year thanks to all our members. For October, we really wanted to focus on mental health awareness. We invited representatives from Mental Health America of Greater Houston, Ticila Johnson and Kathleen Franks, to speak about stigmas associated with having a mental illness. Our action to help reduce stigma was to make cards with positive messages on them, for mental health kits.
Continuing with the topic of mental health awareness, we invited Dr. Cecilia Sun, from UHCAPS (University of Houston Counseling and Psychological Services), to talk about eating disorders. Additionally, she also gave us oncampus resources for helping students with their own mental health. We also voted on our t-shirt design. For our in-meeting service project, we made the games and props for Trunk ‘r Treat .

The first event of CKI week was a bake sale! Aside from our typical bake sale items, we also had fried rice, and it was totally a hit! Thank you to everyone who helped cook, donated food, and took shifts. We are so lucky for everyone in CKI and we look forward to seeing everyone at future bake sales.
10/15 To jumpstart and introduce new members, we had a boba social at Cafe 101. Old gave their experience about certain upcoming service projects to new members, as well as get to know each other. This really helped us grow closer together as an organization. “It was nice to get hyped for fall retreat� - Vincent T.
10/16 Coogs for a cause is a volunteering fair hosted by MVP, Metropolitan Volunteer Program. This is where students can learn about volunteering organizations on-campus, such as CKI. We were very thankful to be invited to this event. Interacting with people interested in service gave us an idea of what people are interested in, and we were also able to gain more contacts for CKI to collaborate with!
10/19 For the last day of CKI week, Key Clubs in the Houston Area invited us to their Avenger-themed Regional Training Conference. We were so excited to interact with the K-Family at this event for the 2nd year in a row! Thank you to Region 12 Key Clubs for allowing us to speak and reach out.

RTC, or Regional Training Conference, is where Key Clubs from around the Houston area come to interact and learn more about their organization. As Key Club is part of the Kiwanis Family, we were so excited to be invited for another year! CKI was given time to give a presentation and our mascot came along with us! We are so thankful we were able to reach out to Key Clubs interested in collaborating with/joining CKI. Hopefully, this event brings the Kiwanis Family closer together. Thank you to the Key Club LTGs who organized this, and we hope to see Key Clubbers in CKI in the upcoming semesters!
K-FAMILY: TRUNK 'R TREAT
Trunk ‘r Treat is an event where we go to areas with refugee children and we celebrate Halloween with them. Trunk ‘r Treat has become an annual event for CKI, and we were so excited for Halloween to come around this year so we could serve with these kids once again. We wanted to provide a safe and friendly halloween environment to the refugee children. The preparation began a few nights before; CKI members gathered all the supplies needed and made sure to get a lot of candy. At the event itself, as members were setting up games, the kids were so eager to come and play! It was so nice to see the kids so happymembers volunteering looked like they were having fun as well. Thank you to SEWA, Lamar CKI, UH VSA, and Bellaire Key Club for serving with us, we hope to see y’all soon!
Trunk ‘r Treat was a wonderful experience to play with the children and give them a fun Halloween. It was really fun playing games with the kids and seeing their face glow up when they got a prize. They were so full of energy on the cold and windy day. It was an amazing experience that I would totally do again.

FALL RALLY @ TEXAS A&M
Shortly after CKI Week, we had Fall Rally at Texas A&M university. This was like a miniDCON where we got to meet members from other clubs in the Southeast Division, but

Since we were in College Station, we had a social at the George Bush Library and Museum. We know that CKI members had so much fun at this event, and can’t wait to see everyone again at Fall Retreat.

CKI x GMB Halloween Social CKI teamed up with Global Medical Brigades for a Halloween social. Members avoided the cold by staying inside together eating food, sharing music, and solving riddles! Those who wanted to painted miniature pumpkins with faces. We really enjoyed the company of GMB, and we hope to collaborate with them in the future.

BeYOUtiful Joseph Pham, our T-O District Governor, has made mental health awareness his governor’s project. It can be difficult for many to openly speak about their struggles mentally, and this leads to more turmoil within a person. Having this as our governor’s project is such an important step towards the normalisation of conversations about mental health without stigma. CKI has reached out to mental health advocates around Houston, as well as geared service projects towards mental health awareness. Some Houston-based resources are: UT Harris County Psyciatric Center, Mobile Crisis Outreach Team Houston, Crisis Intervention Team Houston.

Our Member of the Month for October is Jonathan Ta. He joined CKI this semester and has been very dedicated since the beginning, even more so this month. While he is a member of CKI, he is also an officer of Global Medical Brigades (GMB). Despite being in 2 organizations, he manages to stay active within CKI. GMB and CKI has collaborated on many events in the past and still are. He suggested to us on combining our Halloween socials together so that there will be more members interested in attending. During our bake sales, Jonathan would make Thai Tea to sell, contributing to raising funds for the Elimination Project and service projects. Throughout the month, he has attended many of our socials, service events, and even Fall Rally! At these events, he has bonded with both members and officers from our chapter and division. He is a big fan of the KPOP group, Twice, and he talks about them to members who also listens to their songs. This brings everyone together, especially those who just joined this semester like him. Although Jonathan has been in CKI for 2 months, he has been active in many of our events while balancing school and other organizations that he is part of. For that reason, he is our October Member of the Month!
