DOUBLE OPPORTUNITY Two new programs offer more options for nonprofit learning by Laurie Anderson
Nonprofit organizations are looking for leaders. A 2018 survey of more than 3,300 nonprofit directors found that 86 percent of respondents believed that demand for their services was rising, while more than half—54 percent—said they planned to expand their programs.1 Two new programs are helping to meet that need.
The Double Dawgs Program enables undergraduates to earn a bachelor’s degree in certain majors and a master of arts in nonprofit management and leadership (MA NML) in five years. The following bachelor’s programs offer a quick route to the master’s degree:
• • • • • • • •
Another option is the online Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. The self-paced program has long been available to students who can come to campus; the online version is open to non-degreeseeking students around the country. Courses can count toward a master’s degree if the student is accepted into the graduate nonprofit program.

“We’ve heard from employees of numerous nonprofit organizations regarding their need and interest in improving their management and leadership skills as well as strengthening their credentials,” said Tony Mallon, director of the Institute for Nonprofit Organizations, which administers the certificate and degree programs. “The online program is ideal for those who find themselves involved in fundraising and writing grant proposals within their organizations or for staff in service agencies who need to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of their work but lack some of the skills.”
The Double Dawgs program was created to give ambitious and motivated students a competitive advantage in today’s knowledge economy. By earning both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in five years or less, students can save time and money while positioning themselves for success after graduation.
The curriculum for the master’s and the certificate covers basic theory and administration of nonprofit organizations, grant proposal writing, program design and evaluation—a key component of successful grant proposals—as well as fundraising and managing volunteers.
