Background and purpose: Social media’s proliferation raises ethical questions for social work practitioners and researchers surrounding new mediated experiences. Recording, archiving, and streaming one’s activities are a part of everyday sociality, but the ethical demands of handling the most sensitive content have yet to be resolved. As social workers strive to adapt digital technologies for the greater good, the meaning and materiality of images must be critically examined with acknowledgment of exploitation and appropriation throughout online cultures. As a case study, the authors analyze the story of Jasmine Eiland, a woman who inadvertently live streamed on Facebook her own sexual assault in an Atlanta night club.

This workshop includes a panel comprised of the Editor-In-Chief of Research on Social Work Practice and three editorial board members who are SSWR Fellows. The following issues will be addressed: 1. What are predatory “academic” conferences? We discuss their origin and how to identify them; panelists will also discuss the issue of predatory conferences which to seem to be very relevant to social work and what to do about them. We will elaborate on why these conferences are a problem in social work research dissemination. 2. Who typically goes to predatory conferences? Panelists will discuss on how predatory conferences are affecting the progress of research in the Global South and propose ways of building the capacity of social work researchers in the US and the Global South to increase their capability of presenting at credible scientific conferences like the SSWR. 3. Justifying conference choice.

We will share available lists and resources that can help us know predatory conferences and how researchers and academic administrators can vet the conferences. We will also discuss the benefits of presenting in the social work community as well as other non-social work high impact conferences. We will also highlight how to take due diligence in selecting conferences.

Predatory Conferences: Are the Flight and Hotel Costs Worth the Effort?

Following two previous successful presentations in the last two SSWR meetings, this workshop focuses on the ever increasing threat of predatory conferences on academic integrity. Like predatory journals, predatory conferences is another recent development in the academic landscape. Nearly just every academic has received numerous emails on all sorts of “academic” conferences within and outside the US. Preliminary reviews show that those involved in predatory journals are also the same entities involved in the business of predatory conferences. Predatory conferences are “academic” conferences, which do not advance academic knowledge or scholarship: their only primary function is to profit from the attendees. Predatory conferences are thought to primarily seek profits in a pay-to-play model where researchers give money to speak at the event. Consequently, predatory conference organizers may have little concern for the quality or rigor of the abstracts they accept or the speakers they invite. Navigating the dubious conference invitations can be both time consuming and challenging. The email invitations may promise an option for a virtual conference, which need not be attended by the invitee: scholars are invited to simply submit a paper and told that they will receive credit for attending the conference. Some invitation emails may refer specifically to a recipient’s previously published works. Most invitations are to conferences on broad or unspecified topics and many explicitly suggested that the recipient would be a speaker at the event or even keynote speaker at the event. According to a recent study, the average cost to attend a predatory conference in the field of medicine is $799, with the registration fee ranging from $95 to $1,999. Thus, it is important for researchers, institutions, and

Background and purpose: Services for domestic violence (DV) represent a life line to safety, healing, and connection for survivors and their children.

Traditional DV service contexts include emergency shelter, housing, non-residential services and legal support. Little is known about the service access experiences of survivors in the DV agency setting, particularly migrating for safety or from traditionally underserved populations. The following study used data from the Texas State plan to understand the service access experiences of survivors. The goal was to inform agencies to improve high quality, trauma-informed service access to facilitate service use, support, healing and justice.

Background and Pprpose: The 2018 state plan expands on prior iterations of plans by using additional secondary data sources in its analysis, collecting

A deeper analysis of the availability of services was conducted through the development of a model quantifying need and availability of county-level services. The modeling used data from both primary and secondary sources to measure system interventions, demographics, and community factors that influence rates of violence and service availability in Texas counties. This data analysis assists in triangulating survey and interview data obtained through the other State Plan research components to help assess the service landscape in Texas while considering socioeconomic and demographic barriers that may be present.

The International Labor Organization estimates that almost 25 million people worldwide were victims of labor trafficking in 2016. Victims of labor trafficking suffer a wide range of negative outcomes associated with the trafficking experience, including poor physical health. While research has begun to document the impact of trafficking on short-term health outcomes, little research considers how labor trafficking impacts health long-term. It is necessary to understand the long-term implications of human trafficking for physical health in order to understand the way in which trafficking continues to impact victims even after the trafficking has ended. In order to document health status, however, it is often necessary to gather biomarker data, as these data provide the most accurate information about health conditions. There are potential ethical issues, however, associated with gathering biomarker data in vulnerable populations, particularly in parts of the world where access to healthcare may be limited. This is especially true for trafficking victims, for whom collection of biological specimens may reintroduce trauma and risks further exploitation. Yet, it is important understand the long-term health needs of person who have been trafficked in order to provide them with appropriate health services throughout the period of reintegration. In this workshop, we will discuss our experiences conducting research on labor trafficking among a group of trafficking survivors in Ghana. The 144 study participants were all young women who experienced labor trafficking in Accra and received services in a local shelter designed to help women escape trafficking. One hundred and sixteen of these women participated in three waves of data collection, and a subset participated in a physical health screening at the third wave, which included collection of blood for biomarker assay. Participants were subsequently tested for markers of inflammation, along with several diseases including HIV and chlamydia. Here, we discuss the processes we used to address ethical concerns associated with collection of sensitive health data. We aimed to conduct the entire research project in ways that empowered survivors, and we describe how we worked to maintain this goal in the collection of health data. We also discuss challenges that we experienced, in an effort to assist other researchers navigate collection of sensitive health data among highly vulnerable populations in ways that appropriately address participant health needs and privacy. In doing so, we hope that this workshop will contribute toward the development of a set of best practices for the collection of health data in ways that empower survivors of exploitation.

Innovations in Human Trafficking Research: Locating Hard-to-Reach Populations

Scholars continue to find challenges in accessing, engaging, and retaining research participants from hard-to-reach populations. A range of techniques to recruit hard-to-reach populations, including snowball sampling, respondent-driven sampling, indigenous field worker sampling, facility-based sampling, targeted sampling, time-location (space) sampling, conventional cluster sampling, and capture re-capture sampling have been employed in the past to find and research theses populations. Among these populations are victims and survivors of human trafficking. The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally. Not only are the validity and reliability of these numbers contested, even the definition and indicators of what constitutes trafficking around the world is still a matter of debate among scholars, practitioners, and policy makers. This dialogic space affords opportunity for researches and key stakeholders to design and apply context-specific data collection techniques that meet fundamental assumptions, including reliability, replicability, and validity. The Africa Programming and Research Initiative to End Slavery (APRIES) is leading efforts to collect baseline child trafficking data in selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The to Combat and Monitor Trafficking in Persons at the US Department of State Office is funding a 5-year research project whose goals are to: a) measurably reduce the prevalence of child trafficking in West Africa, and b) identify service and programming gaps and to design evidence informed programs and policies that bridge these gaps. APRIES is an interdisciplinary and international consortium of researchers in the US, the UK, and Africa. Researchers are drawn from the disciplines of social work, sociology, public health, women’s studies, and political science. Researchers will be presenting on how to build complex teams of researchers and how to access a low-resourced country and mechanisms that they used in locating victims and survivors of child trafficking. The workshop will demonstrate the application of community-based participatory research (CBPR) techniques that include the use of the novel network scale up (NSUM) method augmented with general household surveys and a set of in-depth interviews and focus groups with survivors and other key stakeholders in two West African countries. To demonstrate briefly, in the NSUM, respondents are asked questions of the type: “How many X do you know?,” where X ranges over different subpopulations of both known and unknown sizes. Known subpopulations could include people named Asante, child workers, and children who have disappeared, while unknown subpopulations are typically the groups of interest, such as victims or survivors of trafficking. Apart from the research design, the workshop will share preliminary findings and lessons learned. The workshop is tailored to researchers working with hard-to-reach populations, especially those in the human trafficking field. Specifically, the workshop will achieve the following objectives: 1. Highlight the major challenges and opportunities in human trafficking research for interdisciplinary teams 2. Demonstrate the application of the NSUM techniques in the collection of trafficking data Discuss the limitations and biases of the NSUM in collecting trafficking data 3. Present findings on child trafficking data and offer lessons learned in the field of baseline data collection.

Family Violence Research in Asian Immigrant Communities in the U.S.: What Is Missing?

Asians are considered one of the largest and fastest growing immigrant groups in the U.S., comprising 5.6% of the population. About 73% of adult Asians in the U.S. are foreign-born. According to a national study, 20% of Asian women have experienced intimate partner violence (PV) during their lifetime. These prevalence rates, however, are likely to be conservative given language barriers, cultural definitions of abuse, stigma, fear of police, and underreporting to medical legal, or social services. In fact, Asian & Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence estimates a much higher percentage (21–55) % of Asian women reporting experience of violence during their lifetime via community-based studies. Based on past research common socio-cultural values of patriarchy, collectivism, family privacy, shame to seek outside help, and religious beliefs supporting strict gender norms have been found to contribute to IPV in Asian immigrant communities. Additionally, several acculturative stressors related to the transition while immigration impact family life; and put Asian immigrant families at risk for IPV. Due to barriers to help seeking unique to immigrant victims (i.e., language difficulty, lack of culturally appropriate services, lack of knowledge about existing resources, immigration status, financial dependency, and discrimination and negative stereotypes), Asian immigrant victims of IPV rarely seek help from formal service providers. Despite the increased risk of experiencing family violence upon immigration to the U.S., there is limited research pertaining to family violence among Asian families. What other types of family violence Asian immigrant families experience? How does IPV look like among Asian immigrant families? These are some unexplored questions. Several reasons for these gaps in research exist; such as lack of the use of culturally responsive instruments, nascent nature of research on family violence among Asian immigrant families, and small or unrepresentative sample sizes. The goal of this roundtable is to construct a dialogue around distinct types and nature of family violence within Asian immigrant families. Additionally, the presenters will focus on ways in which family violence research can be conducted in a culturally responsive manner with Asian immigrant families.

Presenter 1 will discuss tactics of in-law related abuse common in South Asian households and highlight the importance of relying on a culturally responsive instrument used to capture this information. Presenter 2 will argue that exposure to both the American and host Asian culture can not only be stressful, but may also prolong adjustment times among children, potentially enhancing their risk of perpetrating or being victims of sibling violence among Asian immigrant families. Presenter 3 will discuss spiritual violence in Asian immigrant households and the cultural nuances that promote this type of violence. All three presenters will discuss: a) gaps in research on family violence among Asian immigrant families, b) interconnection between IPV, sibling violence, and spiritual violence; and c) future research direction on the gaps, including potential interventions that may work with Asian immigrant families. Finally, the audience will be invited to ask questions, share experiences, and discuss opportunities related to research on family violence among Asian immigrant families.

Success in the academy requires that scholars be socialized and provided the skills and knowledge they will need as educators and researchers. Notably, how an individual understands their role as a faculty member begins not with the first faculty position but actually during or prior to their graduate school experience. Without the socialization process, and mentorship, doctoral students are likely to struggle and commit avoidable mistakes. For many, such as scholars of color, success in the academy does not allow room for error, and undoubtedly those errors can cause individuals to suffer lasting consequences. Those mistakes are often the result of limited access to information, as well as a lack of the social capital that is required for a successful academic career. Furthermore, for scholars of color, the intersection of race and class/SES, which can be even more complicated by gender and ethnic identity, is deeply imbedded in our historical sociopolitical systems. That history, and one’s intersecting identities, can be a catalyst for individuals entering into the academy. Unfortunately, they can also serve as the foundation upon which significant race and gender disparities experienced by social work doctoral students, tenured and tenure-track faculty, and administrators are promulgated. The participants of this roundtable will share challenges they have experienced, due to the intersections of race and class/SES, while managing life in academia.

There is evidence that race, class, and gender significantly influence people’s ways of knowing (Banks-Wallace, 2000). In fact, scholars have consistently suggested that the voices, experiences, and contexts of Black women in the U.S. needs further investigation, yet researchers continue to struggle with including Black women in their studies (Carrington, 2006; Wallace et al., 2017). Meleis (1996) concluded that study designs and sample sizes that adequately allow researchers to examine the lives of Black women are needed to develop culturally relevant scholarship. As researchers continue to struggle to employ research designs grounded in culturally consistent epistemologic frameworks to recruit and retain Black women in studies, they may miss opportunities to integrate Black women’s ways of knowing and scholarly inquiry consciously. Thus, the consequences of these gaps may lead to a decrease in our awareness and knowledge of issues related to conducting research with Black women.

Background: In the era of #metoo and a sustained focus on sexual harassment and sexual assault on college campuses, social work faculty and staff have partnered with their universities to help strengthen prevention, policy, and response. We have not always looked within our own ranks to examine the ways that social workers and our students are uniquely impacted by sexual harassment. Students reported that their social work programs largely did not prepare them for sexual harassment that they might experience in the field, creating an atmosphere of silence. Federal policy under Title IX asserts that students should have equal access to educational opportunities without regard to sex. Sexual harassment can create a hostile learning environment that deprives students of their educational opportunities by limiting access, contributing to physical and mental health concerns, and hindering the achievement of professional goals. Sexual harassment frequently co-occurs with other types of oppression and harassment behaviors, including racism and homophobia. LGBT students are among the highest risk for sexual harassment, and students of color may experience more frequent sexual harassment. In order to live up to the social justice ideals of our profession, social work has an obligation to better understand and address the unique ways that sexual harassment manifests within our own settings, organizations, and communities.

People have always looked through me or avoided me. I’ve felt shunned by the human race just because I don’t have a job. In the last year I feel like I’ve become a member of the library community. People know my name and talk with me, not to me. I count.” -patron speaking of the Homeless Engagement Initiative at Dallas Public Library. Settlement houses were a comprehensive approach to building collective capacity within communities, addressing needs, and serving as a centralized source of information on resources. Today, the public library serves many of these purposes, acting as a centralized source of information (Moxley & Abbas, 2016) and a safe space for vulnerable populations such as homeless individuals (Ruhlman, 2014). There is a recent trend towards libraries hiring social workers to serve these patrons (Hester, 2017; Torknya, 2015). Vulnerable library patrons are likely to have histories of trauma, however, libraries are often unaware of these trauma-related issues. As libraries shift from transactions to increased interactions, social workers can collaborate with libraries to better address the trauma-related needs. Schools of social work can also provide technical expertise to library staff regarding how to best intervene in crises, offer resources, link with community resources, and build a welcoming library. This roundtable examines the strategies, impact, and lessons learned from a federally funded academic-community partnership integrating a trauma-informed framewo into a regional public library to address the growing needs of vulnerable patrons in accessing local community resources and supports. Panelists representing the perspectives of the research team and community team will begin with an overview of the research-informed, community-driven project. Specifically we will outline three main components: (1) social work resource and referral services; (2) staff training and education on trauma and trauma-informed care; and (3) contextual assessment and intervention to inform library policies. Panelists will next discuss how researchers, direct practice supports, and library staff collaborated to implement and evaluate a trauma-informed framework in libraries that facilitates social inclusion and addresses racial and economic

State Implementation of CAPTA Federal Guidelines on Prenatal Substance Exposure: Impact on Entries in Foster Care Cluster: Child Welfare (CW) 1:00 PM, Independence BR B, ML 4

After 2010 Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) reauthorization, states must have policies and procedures to address the needs of infants born identified as affected by illegal substance abuse or withdrawal symptoms resulting from prenatal drug exposure. This study examines the implementation of CAPTA in all 50 states and the District of Columbia with regards to prenatal drug exposure and seeks to answer the following questions: 1) Did all states implement CAPTA 2010 in their statutes?, 2) Are there differences in implementation between child welfare policy manuals and statutes in each state?, and 3) If there is a difference in implementation, does it impact the number of youth entering foster care?

Intimate Partner Homicides in Pregnant Women Compared to Non-Pregnant Women: Findings from National Data Cluster: Violence against Women and Children (VAWC) 1:00 PM, Liberty Ballroom N, ML 4

Rachel Fusco, PhD, Associate Professor, UGA Background and significance: The number of women who were victims of homicide in the U.S. grew by 21% in 2016 compared to the previous year.

Women who are murdered in the U.S. are nine times more likely to be killed by former or current intimate partner than by a stranger. Pregnant women are at particularly high risk, and homicide is one of the leading causes of death in pregnant women. While certain risk factors for Intimate partner homicides (IPH), such as a prior history of intimate partner violence, access to firearms, and suicidality in the partner, have been established, less is known about specific risk factors among pregnant IPH victims. Developing a better understanding of IPHs in pregnancy may help in creating targeted prevention programs. The current study compared differences in female IPH victims of childbearing age (defined by the CDC as 15-44 years old) who were pregnant compared to those who were not pregnant using a national database of violent deaths.

Trauma and Criminal Justice Involvement Among Youth: The Role of Supportive Relationships with Adults

Background and purpose: Youth who experience childhood maltreatment are more likely to engage in delinquent behaviors. Mental health problems may be a mechanism through which maltreated youth become involved in criminal behavior. Supportive relationships with adults may function as a protective factor that enhances adaptive coping and prevents maltreated youth from becoming involved in criminal behavior. Knowledge of factors associated with involvement in juvenile delinquency may be helpful in designing social work services for maltreated youth. Utilizing structural equation modeling, this study examined the relationship of supportive adult relationships on likelihood of criminal justice involvement and presence of trauma symptoms as well as the presence of trauma symptoms on likelihood of criminal justice involvement among a sample youth experiencing childhood maltreatment.

Research suggests increased vulnerability to mental health distress for ethnic minorities due to discrimination and racism. Though considerable research has been done on the mental health of immigrants and ethnic minorities, there is limited research on Africans in America who are among the fastest growing immigrant populations in the U.S. The duo status of black and immigrant coupled with the media-facilitated negative portrayal of black Africa makes this group particularly vulnerable to discrimination and negative outcomes. Thus for social workers to better serve this population, an exploration of factors that negatively impact their mental wellbeing is warranted.

Background and purpose: Changes to and enforcement of U.S. refugee and immigration policy under the Trump administration since the January 2017 inauguration have been described as unprecedented and draconian.

From the promotion of a U.S. Southern border wall; to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement of a “Zero-Tolerance” policy in April 2018 that resulted in the separation of children from their families, and their subsequent detainment without a clear means to facilitate reunion; to the record low capping of refugees at 30,000 in September 2018; to the deployment of 5,000 U.S. soldiers to the Southern border and sanctioned use of tear gas on children and families trying to cross it in November 2018; to reports of industrial tent facilities in Tornillo, Texas housing nearly 3,000 children and adolescents (larger than any federal prison) without due process and without access to important resources; to marking migrants’ arms at the U.S.-Mexico border with identifying numbers in black permanent marker; to the death of seven-year-old Jakelin Amei Rosmery Caal Maquin from Guatemala while in U.S. custody. The purpose of this case study is two-fold: describe the detainment and deportation processes and their implementation at the infamous Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia; and, discuss social work’s potential role, or lack of role, in these processes in general.

Background: Mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, are serious problems among Korean American (KA) women, but many KA women do not seek mental health treatment. A lower level of mental health literacy has been found to account for low rates of mental health services, contributing to mental health disparity for this population compared to other racial/ethnic groups. This study utilized Andersen’s Behavioral Model to bridge gaps of knowledge by investigating: (1) current levels of mental health literacy among KA women and (2) factors associated with mental health literacy among KA women.

Background and purpose: Suicidality (i.e., suicide ideation, plan, and attempt) remains an ever-growing problem for Latinx youth as many of them face systematic inequalities associated with adverse mental health outcomes.

For example, Latinx youth struggling with suicidality, especially those in exclusionary state-level immigration policy climates (SLIPC), confront multi-level barriers to care. Yet, little is known regarding how such systematic-level factors influence the suicide ideation-to-action continuum among this vulnerable population. Through an ecological systems framework, this study examined the association between micro, mezzo, and macro-level factors and their influence on the suicide ideation-to-action continuum among Latinx youth.

Background: Recent estimates report that six in ten people in the U.S. have been exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as child abuse and neglect. Such ACEs are associated with negative health and behavioral consequences on survivors, which could last throughout adulthood. Further, ACEs have been shown to be a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization in adulthood. Literature suggests that both ACEs and IPV victimization are associated with negative health outcomes, including physical and mental health, and depression. Understanding such relationships will better prepare service providers for the survivors of ACEs and IPV victimization, who are likely to have complicated needs across lifespan.

However, previous studies are limited in this area, often using small samples, and focusing on a single type of victimization of ACEs or IPV. This study fills this gap by examining how ACEs and IPV victimization affect health outcomes using a recent data collected from college students.

Background/Purpose: Child well-being is a multifaceted concept inclusive of health related to the physical and mental health of children. Researchers have examined the child well-being within a variety of contexts; however, the physical and mental health characteristics regarding children within foster care is understudied. The primary aim of this study is to investigate and identify indicators of child well-being for children in foster care, to gain insight into the interconnectedness between health and a child’s experience in-care. Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions: 1) What are the sociodemographic characteristics of youth entering foster care with physical and mental health diagnoses? 2) Do these youth differ from the general foster care population? 3) Is presence of a physical and/or mental health diagnosis when entering foster care associated with differential permanency outcomes in comparison to youth with no health diagnoses?

This study sought to better understand the relationship between employment status and mental health among a sample of immigrants to the U.S., particularly whether immigrant mental health changed over time, based on employment status. This study seeks to answer the following research question: “Over time, are immigrants who become unemployed or remain unemployed, more likely to have mental health problems than immigrants who become employed or remain employed?”

How Is the Efficacy of Peer Support Programs for Mental Health Measured?

Background and purpose: In 2013, a Cochrane Systematic Review concluded that peer support services offer outcomes no better than those achieved by professionals employed in similar roles. While systematic reviews are one of the highest forms of evidence and a basis for decision making, these studies can be methodologically flawed and limited in scope. For example, of the 11 studies on peer support reviewed, measures of mental health symptom severity was the predominant outcome. Yet, peer support services are holistic. They include facilitating education and support groups and linking people to services as they transition from hospitals or jails into the community. Peers work as role models, mentors, advocates and support people in creating recovery plans. Thus, while the role of peer support services is robust, it is unclear whether this has been captured in scientific literature. The goal of this study is to provide an assessment of the outcomes used to examine peer support services and assess whether these are aligned with the content of peer support services and the roles of its providers.

Background and purpose: This study explored the relationship between sociodemographic factors of social work students and self-censorship when engaging with sociopolitical issues in social work classrooms. Social work students, upon graduation, are expected to navigate difficult conversations about relevant social justice concerns regarding often contentious sociopolitical issues. It is unclear from previous literature what factors may contribute to social work students engaging openly in such conversations. The purpose of this study was to explore sociodemographic factors including race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, political view, interest in politics, and social work experience that may contribute to social work students’ level of self-censorship when engaging with sociopolitical topics in the classroom.

Background and purpose: Individuals living in rural America experience significant health disparities when compared to their urban counterparts, including a shorter life span and increased rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. These issues are compounded by the limited access to healthcare and transportation available to rural communities. Background: The Global Standards for Social Work Education and Training (Article 8.8) assert that social work students be “schooled in a basic human rights approach, as reflected in international instruments such as the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR; 1948), the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and the UN Vienna Declaration (1993)” (International Association of Schools of Social Work & International Federation of Social Workers, 2004). Following on the hypothesis that social work students are being exposed to human rights, this project explores the rights-based knowledge and commitments of US and Spanish social work students based on their self-rated human rights exposure and engagement. In the U.S., public libraries have played an important role as community centers for many citizens by offering not only books but also indirect and direct social services. However, there has been a lack of knowledge on how to better serve disadvantaged patrons through public libraries. Suicide Ideation Among Latinx Adolescents: Examining the Role of Parental Monitoring and Intrinsic Religiosity

Background and purpose: Latinx adolescents continue to be at elevated risk for suicide as they are more likely to attempt suicide than their non-Latinx whites’ peers. Using the Joiner’s (2005) Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS), the present study tested the mediation effect of depression in relation to intrinsic religiosity and suicide ideation and the moderating effects of parental monitoring between depression and suicide ideation. intrinsic religiosity and suicide ideation. Intrinsic religiosity and parental monitoring were selected for this analysis because of the salience both constructs have in the lives of Latinx adolescents and their relationship with an adolescent’s sense of belonging, perceived burdensome, and acquired capability.

Trends in the Utility of Structural Equation Modeling in Social Work: A Systematic Review

Background: Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a statistical technique that allows the testing of various models to depict a relationship between observed and latent variables Increasingly, social work scholars have been engaging in testing theories and finding relationships among observed and latent variables. Hence, this makes SEM an important statistical technique for social work scholars and researchers. To date, there only exist two comprehensive reviews detailing the extent to which SEM is being utilized in social work research (Guo et. al.,2009; Okech et. al., 2013). Both these reviews only reviewed n=32 and n=59 articles respectively and listed several limitations associated with the reviewed studies. The purpose of the present systematic review is to assess further developments over the past half-decade and to document the evolving use of SEM by social work researchers.

Empathy, Self-Efficacy, and Decisional Conflict: The Complexity of Consent

Background: Consent is considered the crux of preventing sexual assault.

Therefore, it is important to understand how college students perceive consent, and the potential factors that influence their beliefs and actions around consent. Three of those potential factors are self-efficacy, a person’s beliefs about their ability to produce certain outcomes, decisional conflict, a person’s confidence in their ability to make important decisions, and empathy. The current pilot study examines the relationship between self-efficacy, decisional conflict, empathy, and consent.

Who Did Retire Early, and Who Did Not?: The Comparison Study between the Early Retirees and the Older Workers 292P

Background and purpose: In the situation the Great Recession had a harmful impact on older workers as forcing them out from the labor market, the early retirement can be a risk factor for both the individuals’ retirement life and the government’s burden of Social Security budget. The early retirement restricted workers’ enough contribution to the retirement plans. However, few studies have examined the early retired population with a comparative perspective to the working-longer group than the early retirement group after the Great Recession. The study is to examine the differences between the early retirement group and the working-longer group with the following research questions: 1) What are the characteristics of the early retirees and the non-early retirees, and 2) What factors predict early retirement?

Background: Every year in the United States, about 3,500 infants die from sleep-related causes such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and accidental suffocation. Some families report having difficulties adhering to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations for a safe infant sleeping environment, especially African American families who are living in under-resourced neighborhoods. Infant safe sleep intervention research suggests several strategies that may address these difficulties: Approaches focused on increasing mothers’ self-efficacy; partnering to develop harm reduction strategies; engaging the mothers’ wider social networks; and providing coaching over time as sleep challenges change. My Baby’s Sleep (MBS) is a 4-session in-home coaching education intervention designed to support African-American families and address barriers to following safe sleep recommendations. Participation in MBS begins during pregnancy and continues until baby is 3 months of age.

Background: Despite the recognition that Latinx and sexual minority youth are groups that are at elevated risk of suicidal behaviors, little attention has been given to the experiences of Latinx youth who identify as lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB). This research oversight is sobering given that, separately, both groups are considered high-risk because they have some of the highest incidence rates of suicide. Guided by an ecological systems theory framework, the purpose of the present study was to investigate how micro, mezzo, and macro factors influence the suicidality continuum from suicidal ideation to suicide attempt among Latinx LGB youth.

Healthy Dating Relationships: Attitudes and Perceptions of College Students

Background and purpose: Sexual assault (SA) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are serious issues that can affect college students in romantic dating relationships. Prior literature has found associations between traditional gender attitudes and SA and IPV. Social norms may distort perceptions in such ways that men and women sometimes do not recognize SA, or other problematic relationship behaviors. Having a strong understanding of what constitutes healthy dating relationships may protect students from SA and IPV. Little research, however, has explored how students understand and conceptualize healthy dating relationships. The specific questions guiding this research were a). How do college students conceptualize healthy romantic and intimate relationships? b). What behaviors, attitudes, or beliefs do college students believe are important for healthy romantic and intimate relationships?
