Themission of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music — in accord with the University of Georgia’s threefold commitment to teaching, research, and service — is to seek excellence, applying national and international standards in:

Bachelor of Music – Music Theory
This degree gives a strong foundation in the academic study of music theory with additional study in music history, performance, and an introduction to composition. The course of study in music theory includes the areas of form and analysis, counterpoint, and compositional techniques, and culminates in a research project that demonstrates the student’s knowledge and abilities in the field.

This program prepares students for a career in the use of music to restore, maintain, or improve mental and/or physical health. Study includes a strong emphasis in psychology and the social sciences with opportunities for professional observation and participation in clinical experiences, including a required six-month professional internship. This is a joint program of the College of Education and the School of Music. The program of study includes music education, music history, music theory, professional education, and research. This degree provides advanced training in music pedagogy appropriate for careers in teaching, administration, research, and other educational services.

Ana Abrantes, the Sphinx Organization
Dr. Ana Abrantes, originally from Campos do Jordão, Brazil, holds the esteemed position of Director of Education at the Sphinx Organization. In this role, she oversees the Overture Program, which provides access to music education to elementary school students in Detroit and Flint, as well as the Sphinx Performance Academy, a collaborative summer program with the University of Colorado, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Juilliard School.
Before joining the Sphinx family, Dr. Abrantes distinguished herself as the Curriculum Director for the renowned Heifetz Institute's junior division in Staunton, VA. Additionally, she played a pivotal role as Operations Manager, managing day-to-day operations and coordinating Heifetz On Tour activities throughout the year.
Dr. Abrantes' musical journey spans across the United States and Brazil. She held core positions in orchestras in Mississippi and
Georgia. At the University of Georgia, she served as principal cellist of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra, a prestigious ensemble founded by Levon Ambartsumian in 1989. Her performances with ARCO included notable tours through Brazil as well as a feature as a cello soloist in Efrem Podgaits' CD, "String Fairy Tale," released under the Art Classics label.
Dr. Abrantes graduated with Honors from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. She furthered her education at the University of Georgia, earning a Master of Music in cello performance and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a minor in music theory. Dr. Abrantes lives in Michigan with her husband and fellow UGAHHSOM alum, Anderson Romero, where they remain committed to fostering excellence and accessibility in music education and performance.

MUsic scholarships
Through the generous support of its donors, the Hodgson School of Music is able to offer scholarships to many students for up to four years for undergraduate study and multiple years for graduate study, depending on the degree and the scholarship. These students are recognized with a special program in the fall. We are very thankful for the support we receive, so please take a moment to review the many scholarships listed here. This represents over $400,000 annually, with some scholarships going back to the earliest days of the school.
