STUDENT PERSPECTIVE SPEAKER

Hometown: Saint Simons Island, Ga.

Activities and Honors:

• UGA Honors College

• Student Merchandising Association, Styling Director

• Stylist for Strike Magazine

• Social Media Director for Fair Fashion

• Greek Goes Green representative

• Intern for Evelyne Talman and Willaby

Why I chose my major: I toured UGA as a senior in high school and had the honor of shadowing a senior in the Fashion Merchandising major. She was phenomenal, as she introduced me to a few FACS staff, and I was even able to sit in one of Dr. Clair McClure’s lectures. This senior guided me through a tour all throughout FACS and told me about the clubs, the fashion shows and the awesome projects she was a part of through Fashion Merchandising. I was sold! I felt a strong pull to be a part of this major, and this tour actually made me decide to commit to UGA after my experience.

What I like most about FACS: My favorite thing about FACS is the sense of teamwork and belonging that exists. No matter the wide array of majors, everyone plays a key role in keeping the college vibrant and lively. We all work hard individually through our respective coursework, but we still unite wonderfully and see the value in one another. FACS is full of friendly faces and people who want to see you succeed.

Post-graduation plans: I see myself working for a sustainable fashion brand and eventually creating my own. I plan to strengthen my portfolio by increasing my skill in sewing secondhand fabric as well as improving my practice in graphic design. My main goal is to allow customers to realize the potential in secondhand fashion as we come together to cut down on waste and become conscious consumers.

STUDENT CHALLENGE SPEAKER

Hometown: Cedartown, Ga.

Activities and Honors:

• Undergraduate research assistant in the Biology, Early Experiences, and Development Lab

• FACS Legislative Aide for Rep. Marcus Wiedower

• Studied away with the FACS Food and Nutrition Tour of Italy and Croatia program

• Student Health Ambassador Committee

• Member of the Brain Exercise Initiative

• Member of the HDFS Association

• Member of Alpha Chi Omega

• Recipient of the Presidential Award of Excellence

• Presidential Scholar

Why I chose my major: Coming into UGA, I knew I wanted to work with children, but my interests were all over the place. When looking into potential majors, I felt like the content in HDFS encompassed all my interests and would serve me not only as a student, but as a person. Biological, psychological and social development, diversity, advocacy, complexities in family systems and research are guiding topics in the major and are important in arguably any career field. HDFS is a well-rounded major and prepares students for not only a variety of different careers, but for life outside of being a student.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND FAMILY SCIENCE

What I like most about FACS: Each department within FACS is unique from the other, so when browsing Dawson Hall, I pick up new fashion ideas, recipes, budgeting tips and many other educational tidbits that encourage a well-rounded and holistic student body. Outside of its educational attributes, FACS is a community. I feel challenged, guided, supported and encouraged by the wonderful people who make up this college.

Post-graduation plans: I will remain in Athens to attend UGA’s M.Ed./Ed.S. School Counseling program while being a graduate assistant in the FACS Student Success and Advising Center.

GRADUATION WITH HONORS

The University of Georgia awards degrees with honors to candidates who meet specified standards of academic excellence. Graduating seniors are recommended for graduation with honors on the basis of their overall grade point average for all college-level work attempted. The overall GPA includes all work attempted at the University of Georgia as well as all college-level transfer work attempted prior to or subsequent to matriculation. Respective standards are as follows:

Honors Designation Required Overall GPA Tassel Color

Summa Cum Laude 3.9 - 4.0 Red, Silver and Black

Magna Cum Laude 3.75 - 3.89

Cum Laude 3.60 - 3.74

Red and Silver

Red and Black

First Honor Graduates

Each student completing a baccalaureate degree with an overall grade point average of 4.0 is designated a First Honor Graduate. The overall grade point average includes all work attempted at the University of Georgia as well as all college-level transfer work attempted prior to or subsequent to matriculation.

First Honors Candidates wear a fourragère (braided cord) on their left shoulder as part of their graduation academic regalia.

Honors Program Graduates

FACS students who participate in the UGA Honors Program may qualify to graduate with Honors, High Honors or Highest Honors. To graduate with Honors, a student must have a minimum 3.3 GPA in his or her Honors courses and a 3.4 cumulative GPA.

To earn High or Highest Honors students have taken at least nine Honors courses and completed capstone coursework, which can include directed research, a thesis, an internship or the completion of three graduate level courses. In addition to the capstone coursework, students who receive High Honors have maintained a 3.5 Honors GPA and a 3.7 cumulative GPA. For Highest Honors, students have maintained a 3.5 Honors GPA and an overall GPA of at least 3.9.

Please note: Because grades for the current semester are not available during the time that commencement programs are being produced and on the day of Commencement, honors designations (including First Honor Graduates) are based on the grade point average earned through the previous academic term. Final academic honor graduates for each semester are selected after grades have been submitted. Final, official honor designations are included on diplomas and transcripts.

Why I chose my major: I applied to UGA as a biology major with pre-med intent, but quickly realized before attending that it was not my passion. I spent my first semester of college undecided and met with the Career Center to discuss becoming a finance major. I was interested in finance because I grew up watching my mom manage her stock portfolio and all my family members’ portfolios. When I met with the Career Center, I told them about my desire to work with people and help people, and they suggested financial planning. After comparing the two majors, I knew financial planning was definitely the place for me.

What I like most about FACS: It is hard to choose just one favorite thing. I always brag about how great my college is to my friends. From the fantastic advisors to the dedicated professors, I know everyone at FACS truly wants to see me succeed. FACS has a wonderful culture of support, community and growth.

Post-graduation plans: I will pursue my master’s in behavioral financial planning here at FACS. After completing that, I have accepted an offer to work as an associate at Homrich Berg Wealth Management in 2025.

20

WELCOME

To the Class of 2024,

When you leave here today, you will officially become one of the thousands of alumni who call the College of Family and Consumer Sciences their alma mater. On behalf of the entire FACS Alumni Association, congratulations and welcome to the family!

Being an alumnus of this college is something that brings me such pride. FACS is a college focused on enriching lives and in my opinion, there are few things more meaningful than that.

Whether you studied consumer economics, nutrition, fashion merchandising or any of the other diverse disciplines available at FACS, your education was rooted in the idea of helping people thrive.

For all of you starting your career, continuing on to grad school or setting out for new adventures, I hope you take with you all of the lessons you learned at Dawson Hall - both in the classroom and those that can’t be taught in a textbook. I hope you find inspiration in new places and that you never stop learning.

For many of you, your work in the classrooms, the labs, the studios and the study halls may be coming to a close, but your work in your community is just beginning.

I encourage you to find ways to continue building your network and community with other FACS graduates.

Connect over coffee, become engaged in alumni chapters and reach out to your professors to mentor the next group of students. There is no end to the opportunities available to help each other succeed.

RYDER CHOSEWOOD

Remember, this community will always be here for you, and we’d love for all of you to stay connected with our alumni family.

Enjoy every moment of this special weekend, and know that later when you are ringing the bell and walking through the Arch, we are cheering you on every step of the way.

I can’t wait to see all the amazing things you accomplish. Congratulations, and Go Dawgs!
