NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2013 40 UNDER 40 The UGA Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2013 40 Under 40, an initiative that celebrates leaders in business, research, artistic, leadership, community, educational and/or philanthropic endeavors. The Georgia Bulldog Club’s Young Alumni Program The UGA Athletic Board recently approved a plan to create a program which would assign approximately 2,000 football season tickets to young alumni for the 2013 season. Anyone who received a degree (Undergraduate, Masters, Doctoral, Professional Students) from UGA between May 1, 2008 and May 31, 2013 is eligible for the program. Currently, an extensive communications plan is being developed to outline the new program. Georgia SBDC Feeling entrepreneurial? Ever thought of starting your own business but need a boost in getting started? The Georgia Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a thirty year old program of the University of Georgia. Its mission is “to enhance the economic well-being of Georgians by providing a wide range of educational services for small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs.� The SBDC provides services in consulting, continuing education, and research. Participants gain knowledge in areas such as industry-focused consulting, classroom and online training, and data RESOURCES FOR RESEARCH 4HE 3"$# ALSO HOUSES THE /FlCE OF Minority Business Development, which supports female and minority entrepreneurs. Some SBDC numbers*: s )N THE LAST THREE YEARS THE 'EORGIA 3"$# .ETWORK ASSISTed entrepreneurs in starting 791 new Georgia businesses. s )N CLIENTS OF THE 'EORGIA 3"$# .ETWORK grew their sales 7.5% and expanded their employment base 7.5% beyond the employment growth rate of the average Georgia business. s )N THE LAST THREE YEARS THE 'EORGIA 3"$# .ETWORK ASSISTED clients with access to over $139 million through commercial loans and equity investments. s )N IMPACT CLIENTS OF THE 'EORGIA 3"$# .ETWORK added approximately 1,697 new jobs to the economy and enjoyed revenues of nearly $993 million. s 3"$# LOCATIONS ACROSS THE STATE In a program run through the Small Business Development Center, University of Georgia pharmacy and veterinary medicine students spend 2 to 3 weeks working in at a veterinary office or pharmacy. At the end of the session, the participants write a report on how the business could improve its operations and increase efficiency. The businesses get the benefit of the recommendations and the students get a firsthand look at what it takes to run a business.

thens is a special place for Jim Chasteen and Charlie Thompson. “Nothing can make me happier than walking across North campus,” says Charlie, who is a Triple Dawg and is married to an Athens native. Jim, who grew up in Athens, graduated from UGA, and married a fellow UGA alumna, shares that whenever he visits the city with his family, he comments “We are heading towards God’s country.” Chasteen and Thompson, former college roommates and fraternity brothers, have more connections than Athens and UGA. Today, they run a business on the side: American Spirit Whiskey. Launched in 2011 from a hobby and a love of whiskey, ASW is a mixable white whiskey designed to bring consumers into the whiskey market who might not be regulars. Charlie says “People hear ‘white whiskey’ and think moonshine—we work hard to share our story and our product; a true hand-to-hand, bottle-to-bottle approach.” After researching the whiskey-making process, Chasteen and Thompson began to develop their whiskey recipe. Both credit their wives as being their strongest supporters while starting this endeavor that can now be found in stores, restaurants and bars in Georgia and South Carolina. ASW launches in Tennessee this spring with other Z[H[LZ ZVVU [V MVSSV^ ;OL` SH\NO [OH[ [OL` ^LU[ [OYV\NO MVY[` VY ÄM[` P[LYH[PVUZ VM [OL WYVK\J[ ILMVYL [OL` YLHJOLK [OL ÄUHS ]LYZPVU (:> OHZ gained a loyal following, mostly through word-of-mouth advertising and UGA alumni. Through the process, Chasteen and Thompson have been very grateful for the university community’s support. Jim says, “I met the best people in my life in those four years at UGA, and if you’re going to do business in Georgia and the South, I’d put the education at Georgia and the contacts you make at Georgia above everything.” Charlie agrees that “so many of the things we’ve been able to do is because of people we went to school with.” They also understand the importance of giving other Dawgs the same opportunities. “I give because UGA has given me so much. As an Athens native, the university gave my community a unique identity. It gave me an education, a foundation for a career, a network of relationships... and an opportunity to meet my wife. Actually, I should be giving more,” Chasteen quipped.

Profiles DEONDRA ROSE Deondra Rose AB ’05 Political Science 2011 UGA 40 Under 40 Honoree University of Notre Dame South Bend, IN Currently reading‌The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot and Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. In 10 years...I hope that my work will promote a keen awareness of the ways in which U.S. lawmakers can use public policies to empower citizens and to promote a truly democratic political landscape. Currently‌I completed my Ph.D. at Cornell University in the summer of 2012, and I now have the tremendous honor of working as a Moreau Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Notre Dame. My research focuses on the feedback effects that federal higher education policies have had on American citizens and U.S. politics, more broadly. I am also teaching courses on American public policy and the politics of inequality. Great UGA memory‌I have so many fun memories from my year as Miss UGA 2005, but one that really sticks with me occurred during the homecoming parade that year. As we were waiting for the parade to begin, Swann Seiler asked me if I wanted to see Uga VI. Did I?! She led me over to Uga's crate and he trotted forward. Then, as if on cue, Uga turned toward me and very nonchalantly sniffed my arm and gave it--and my glamorous rhinestone bracelet--a big lick. That bracelet will be forever known as "the Uga bracelet," and my feelings for the mascot are best described as love with a capital L. Can you share any UGA traditions of your own? During my year as Miss UGA, red and black became my signature colors. Seven years after graduation, I continue to sport the color scheme as a tribute to my alma mater.

Favorite part of your job‌It’s constantly changing. Great UGA memory‌As a young reporter at the Red & Black, learning and writing about the blueprints for future buildings, parks, and campus developments. Can you share any UGA traditions of your own? I’ve hosted a holiday charity event, the Red Tie Soiree, for 10 years in Atlanta and New York which has become mini-reunions for many UGA alumni. I also watch football games with local NYC alumni. Favorite part of your job‌I work for an amazing agency full of wonderful people and clients!! Without a doubt, my favorite part is working with the grandparents in my program. Can you share any UGA traditions of your own? Wearing a UGA shirt at work on Friday before big games.
Favorite part of your job...I love my job so picking my favorite part is tough. It is my team...I work with amazing and brilliant people. You can look at the success we are having and realize that it's totally and completely a team effort. That's very cool to be a part of and help lead. Great UGA memory...As a senior, I presented a paper about the history of college football in the media at CURO (an undergraduate research forum). I spent hours in the rare book room and ended up winning the best humanities paper out of around 50 submissions. Can you share any UGA traditions of your own? My mom got me a UGA charm bracelet for graduation and I wear it every Friday during football season with a red and ISHJR V\[Ä[ Inspired by…My mom. She's been battling colon cancer for 7 years and yet continues to make quilts for her loved ones and maintain a very positive attitude. She's the strongest person I know.
Inspired by… My late father instilled in me a sense of work ethic and motivation and he’s the major reason I am where I am, and who I am, today. Also my major professor at UGA, Karl Kuhnert, was and still is a great mentor of mine, and he inspires me to help others and be a mentor to others every day.
