THE E-MAGAZINE FOR RECENT GRADS

Fall 2012

W

elcome to the premier edition of Profiles! We’re excited to unveil this quarterly e-magazine, created especially for recent UGA graduates like you. I’m Elizabeth Guest, and I work in the University’s Office of Annual Giving. We’re ramping up our efforts to connect with recent graduates and communicate ways you can stay involved and make a difference at your alma mater. Fall is just gorgeous in Athens. I’m from Texas, and our leaves don’t change colors. One day it is 90 degrees outside and the next the temperature has plummeted 50 degrees with a whipping wind that catches brown, shriveled up leaves that have dropped off the trees seemingly overnight. I hope you get a chance to visit Athens soon and relish in the beauty of the season, whether you are cheering on the football or basketball teams, or attending a special event on campus. See the event calendar on page 5 for upcoming happenings.

Need a Transcript? Required to submit a transcript with a graduate school or job application? The Office of the Registrar has launched a quick and easy electronic system for students and alumni needing official UGA transcripts. The new e-transcript program allows any student or alumnus with an 810 ID number to order the transcript online and receive a certified PDF within a matter of minutes, cutting down the turnaround time by days. Any students and alumni with an 810 number can log into the new system. Forgot your 810 number? Call the EITS Help Desk at 706.542.3106. Check out the new transcript ordering system.

Our first issue features two local business owners, a few updates from the University and ways to stay connected. Scattered throughout Profiles are snapshots submitted by you. If you didn’t get the memo, don’t worry. Submit some photos online and you could find yourself in the pages of our next e-magazine. If you have any ideas about what you want to see in future issues, please let us know. Enjoy reading Profiles!

Go Dawgs! Elizabeth

Meet Uga IX On September 15, President Michael Adams “collared” Uga IX, also known as Russ. Russ is the eight-year old half-brother of Uga VII, and although his coat is not pure white—the traditional requirement for the mascot—he has certainly proved his worth as interim mascot for 25 games over four seasons. Coach Mark Richt praised the little guy’s determination, as Russ “could have gotten bitter with everyone saying he couldn’t get it done’’ and compared him to a player who had been told that he wasn’t good enough to start, but ‘’bowed his neck and won the job.’’ He added, “I’m proud of him.” Even Uga is a donor to the University—what a philanthropic mascot! In 2009, Frank W. “Sonny” and Cecilia Seiler gave the UGA Libraries letters and business correspondence related to the dogs, as well as photos and letters from fans so the legacy of all the Georgia mascots will be preserved. Meet Uga IX and get a headstart on your holiday shopping during Alumni Night at the Bookstore on Nov. 16.

homasville, Georgia native TJ Callaway continues to be intertwined with UGA and Athens. Callaway enjoyed student life and credits the Leonard Leadership Scholars Program, an intense two-year business leadership program, for helping him SHUK OPZ ÄYZ[ QVI (Z HU HS\TU\Z *HSSH^H` PZ H ;OPYK 7PSSHY JVUsecutive donor. He has served on Terry College’s Young Alumni Board and was recently recognized as a member of UGA’s 2012 40 Under 40, which recognizes young alumni making an impact in business, leadership or philanthropy. With four years of investment banking experience in Atlanta, Callaway and his friend Will Watts started Five Mile Club in 2011 while still at “real jobs.” Fivemile.com, a website specializing in sporting, Southern and outdoor gear at 70% off retail prices, gave its founders an opportunity to capitalize on their entrepreneurial spirits.

In 10 years... Who knows! If you told me two years ago I would be in the men’s clothing industry, I would have said you’re crazy. Biggest challenge: Starting a small business from the ground up. Hope to be known for: Helping young people. I got a lot of help through the years reaching out to others, asking them how they did it and what they would do differently. I hope to be known for sharing my life lessons with others, too.

One summer evening in 2012, Callaway stumbled upon a storefront opportunity on Clayton Street in downtown Athens to compliment his online business. Within twelve hours, he had the lease and Onward Reserve opened in less than a month—just in time for fall semester and football season. Each piece of the store’s décor has a story—from the 2,000 pound Cape buffalo to art by Steve Penley. Callaway especially SV]LZ [OL ¸WPJ[\YLZ VM \Z ÄZOPUN WSH`PUN NVSM O\U[PUN¯HSS NVVK memories to share who we are and help us connect with customers.” Callaway hopes business continues to grow and believes that “one of the most exciting things you can do with success is share with family and friends.” www.onwardreserve.com ^^^ Ä]LTPSL JVT

Rachel Esposito BBA Management ’01 Owner, Bel Fiore Bridal

A

tlanta-based bridal expert, author and boutique owner Rachel Esposito always knew she wanted to own her own business—she just wasn’t sure what that business would be. When Esposito graduated in 2001, she took a job in the accounting department of a national transportation company and quickly realized she was not in the right place. While helping her sister-in-law find her wedding dress, she recognized a need in the Altanta-area for a particular kind of bridal shopping experience and opened Bel Fiore Bridal in 2004. “There weren’t a lot of bridal boutiques that catered to a moderate price range while providing a really good customer service experience,” she said. “Our philosophy is you don’t have to spend $5,000 on a dress to be treated nicely.” Since 2004, the boutique has grown and become known for having styles at reasonable prices with outstanding customer service. For two consecutive years, Esposito has been honored at UGA’s Bulldog 100, which recognizes the 100 fastest growing businesses owned by UGA alumni. Esposito is the author of The Ultimate Insider's Guide to Finding the Perfect Wedding Dress and a contributing author of 101 Secrets Every Bride Needs to Know About Buying Wedding Attire. "My professors were great and provided the support I needed to be successful in courses and in my future career," she said. Esposito loved her time as a student at UGA and was a Senior Signature donor. www.BelFioreBridal.com

The most rewarding part of my job is to have a bride return to the store after she's been married and tell us what a great experience she had.” Currently reading: I don’t do a whole lot of reading outside of work. I have 2 small children, but I typically read sales books that are bridal specific. Hope to be known for: I would like to be known more as an expert in the industry than as a store owner. Biggest challenge: Trying to maintain a balance between having a life, two small children and being a business owner. It’s hard to give 100% to three different areas of your life.
