Dear beef cattle producers and enthusiasts,

Welcome to the 24th Tifton Heifer Evaluation and Reproductive Development (HERD) Sale! This being my second year in this program, I am very grateful for all the amazing relationships built with consignors and producers alike. As in any sector of the beef industry, we find challenges every year but with the solid foundation of the HERD team they are easily overcome and this program only becomes stronger and more valuable to the Georgia beef producer.

Once again this year, we have an outstanding set of heifers to serve as replacements in your herd. During the program, they have showed great potential and I am confident they will bring excellent quality to your operation. All heifers were bred to calving-ease bulls and were thoroughly examined for overall health, disposition, and reproductive soundness. There is a great variety to choose from and all heifers are docile and great to work with. We had a conception rate of 57% via Artificial Insemination, with an overall 88% pregnancy rate. Additionally, all heifers have been genetically tested to provide genomic enhanced EPDs for registered, and Igenity Beef scores and decision indexes for commercial heifers. If you have any questions about the genomic data provided, please feel free to reach out and I will be glad to assist. Online bidding will be offered through LiveAuctions.Tv and videos will be available online at ugabeef.com/herd beforehand for those that are unable to come see the heifers in person. Please note that heifers will not be brought up to the ring during the sale, which will be based on the videos broadcasted in the arena; however, heifers will be in pens outside of the arena. Feel free to arrive early and take a good look at them prior to the sale.

Sale Order

Sale will begin at 12:30 p.m. The emphasis of the HERD Program is reproductive efficiency and will be reflected in the sale order. There will be two divisions: AI-bred Heifers and Natural-bred Heifers (in that order). Within each division, sale order is determined by date of conception. Ties for conception date will be broken by grade as determined by a grading committee. Further ties will be broken by the birth date of the heifer. Heifers will be sold through video and will not be brought through the ring on sale day. To bid online please register at liveauctions. tv.

Terms and Conditions

1. Each heifer will be sold to the highest bidder.

2. The auctioneer will settle any dispute as to bids.

3. The terms of the sale are cash or check.

4. Each heifer becomes the risk and property of the new owner as soon as sold by the auctioneer.

However, every precaution will be taken for the safety of all cattle until they are loaded.

5. All heifers will be fed and looked after for a period of 48 hours after the sale.

6. All registered heifers will have a certificate of registry, properly transferred, furnished by the owner for that individual. No registration certificates will be transferred for heifers selling as commercial.

7. The cost of transfer fees for registered heifers will be paid by the seller.

8. The cost of AI Certificates will be paid by the buyer.

9. Health certificates will be available for each heifer sold. Buyers from states with special entry requirements should call 229-386-3683.

10. Heifers are guaranteed to be pregnant the day of the sale. They have been palpated pregnant by a qualified veterinarian. Purchasers will have 30 days from the date of sale to observe for signs of nonpregnancy and report any open females to the sale management. If a qualified veterinarian determines that a heifer that was sold as pregnant is in fact open, then the purchaser will be eligible for a 25% refund of the purchase price from the consignor of the open heifer. The consignor and/or sale management reserves the right to retest any heifer in question for pregnancy.

11. The information on the sires in the catalog is correct to the best of our knowledge and ability. However, in some cases, the AI dates and PE dates are so close that it may require DNA testing to positively determine the correct sire of the resulting calf. In this situation, the DNA testing will be at the buyer’s expense.

Explanation of Test Data

The Georgia Heifer Evaluation and Reproductive Development (HERD) Program is in its 24th year. The program is a service to Georgia cattle producers. It is sponsored by the Animal & Dairy Science Department of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine with the cooperation of the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association and with the hands-on assistance of Georgia County Extension Agents.

Heifer Development Protocol

• Pre-delivery: IBR/BVD/PI3/BRSV, 7-Way Blackleg, 5-Way Lepto, and Pasteurella.

• Receiving: Dewormed, given an intranasal vaccine, tested for PI-BVD (all heifers tested negative).

• On 10/25 they were given a booster for IBR/BVD/PI3/BRSV, 7-way Blackleg, and 5-way Lepto-Vibrio.

• Nutrition: High-quality bermudagrass hay plus a supplement of feed consisting of soybean hulls and corn gluten pellets topped with a molasses coating as well as a mineral/vitamin mix with Intellibond.

• Each heifer has been evaluated for pelvic area, frame score, disposition, reproductive tract maturity score, and structure.

• The heifers were AI’d once followed by 51 days of exposure to calving ease Angus bulls. Heifers not meeting the minimum RTMS, pelvic area, docility, found to be pregnant upon delivery, or not confirmed pregnant after AI and exposure are not eligible for sale.

Test Data:

1. Del Wt.: Weight on 10/3/22.

2. Target Weight: Estimated mature weight x 65%. Heifers should reach this weight by 15 months of age for optimum reproduction.

3. Final Wt.: Weight on 3/8/23.

4. WDA: Weight per day of age is based on 3/8/23 weight.

5. ADG: Average Daily Gain is based on 3/8/23 weight.

6. Frame Score: Calculated using BIF’s guidelines.

7. Dispo: The average of 3 scores taken throughout the program using BIF’s guidelines for chute side docility scoring 1-6. 1 being docile, and 6 being very aggressive.

10. RTMS: Reproductive Tract Maturity Score is not a measure of fertility or productivity. It’s an estimate of maturity of the repro tract on a scale of 1-5. The higher number indicates a more mature tract. Heifers with more mature tracts should conceive earlier in the breeding season.

Safe In Calf: All heifers are guaranteed to be pregnant the day of the sale. If a heifer is safe to an AI date, then that date along with the service sire is listed; if she is safe to one of the clean-up bulls, then the pasture exposure (PE) dates are listed along with the name of the service sire.

11. Calving Ease Direct: Difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers.

12. Birth Weight: 13. Weaning Weight: 14. Yearling Weight: Are expressed in pounds of calf both below and above the average for their breed.

15. Calving Ease Maternal: Difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters.

16. MILK: An indication of the added weight at weaning of a bull’s daughter’s calves due to the bull’s transmission of milking ability.

17. Combined Value (Angus $C): Expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd.

All-Purpose Index (Simmental/SimAngus API$): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.

The Igenity Beef test is an enhanced genetic tool to help evaluate genetic potential for maternal, performance, and carcass traits in commercial replacement heifers. These decision indexes are based on a ranking of a 1-10 score. A complete list of all individual scores for each trait will be listed in a separate sale supplement on our website, and on sale day.

3) Faster Improvement

What are the Benefits of Testing?

1) Improved Confidence

Over the years, commercial cattle producers have only had visual appearance and individual measurements known as phenotypes to use for heifer selection criteria. Now producers can evaluate the genetic differences known as Molecular Breeding Values (MBVs) between heifers well before their first potential breeding season. Having genomic test results for economically important traits while selecting potential replacements allows producers to estimate heifer productivity before going through a breeding season or calving.

2) Reduced Development / Replacement Cost

Commercial producers can offset their heifer development cost through improved heifer fertility and longer mature cow productive lifespan when using genomic markers such as Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) and Stayability (STAY) which are lowly heritable traits. By removing heifers that rank poorly for HPG or STAY, overall replacement retention should improve over time.

Heifer Development Cost Estimated @ $600 hd (excludes labor)

If a producer wants to improve growth or carcass merit traits in a herd, they can eliminate replacements with poor scores for carcass traits which will speed up the rate by which those specific traits improve over time. Obtaining the genetic strengths and weaknesses of a herd through genomic testing also allows more targeted matings. If an operation’s genomic results show below average stayability, producers can select bulls with higher stayability EPDs to maximize the speed of improvement. The same could be done for marbling or docility for example as well as a combination of traits. Therefore, cattlemen can more quickly meet their herd’s production and marketing goals by removing heifers that are genetically inferior for specific traits of interest.

What Information Is Available?

Neogen’s Igenity Beef ranks heifers on 16 different traits through a 1-10 scoring system. With the exception of Birth Weight and Residual Feed Intake, higher numbers are generally more advantageous.

How Do I Use the Scores?

Genomic scores are much like EPDs in their use. Producers can focus on the indexes that combine several traits or individual traits that are of greatest concern. Producers can set their own criteria for their operation’s specific needs and goals. Cattlemen wanting to enhance carcass merit in their herd can select against those cattle that are in the bottom

Genomic Testing

10% of the group for marbling or by using a terminal index. Similarly, those with sufficient carcass genetics can focus on selecting heifers that are stronger in maternal traits such as heifer pregnancy or a combination of maternal traits by using a maternal index.

Example Heifer Selection Strategy:

A 110 head mature cow operation is seeking to improve overall herd fertility without sacrificing carcass traits. Their recent calf crop resulted in 50 heifer calves. Ten heifers were culled for poor growth, inadequate conformation, poor docility or skeletal structure issues. The remaining 40 potential replacement heifers were genomic tested using Igenity Beef. The producer then ranked the heifers

SAVINGS ON HEIFER DEVELOPMENT:

Cost to test 40 Heifers = $1,160 (40 x $29.00/hd)

Development Cost = 40 head x $600 = $24,000

Development cost savings of heifers culled on genomic data = $6,000 (25% x 40 heifers x $600 = $6,000)

on maternal index and culled the bottom 20%. Two other heifers were culled for very low marbling score resulting in a 25% culling rate based on genomic data. The operation developed the remaining 30 heifers for a 60-day breeding season. Then, the producer selected AI sires and purchased clean up bulls that were in the top 25% of the breed for Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability EPDs while also being above breed average for marbling and ribeye area. At pregnancy check, 4 heifers were open leaving the operation with 26 replacements that can move the producers towards their production goals faster than just relying on performance records. Below is an example of the cost benefit, just from a heifer development standpoint, of using the genomic test as one of the “tools it the toolbox”. This illustrates the advantage of identifying unproductive females as early as possible.

IMPROVED VALUE:

Sell as feeder heifer: 550 lbs. feeder heifer @ $1.65/lb. = $907.5 vs

Sell as open, yearling heifer: 850 lbs. yearling heifer @ 1.42/lb. = $1,207

Summary

Using genomic testing along with good nutrition and reproductive management can benefit producers by improving the odds of retaining heifers that will stay in the herd longer. Each female that is culled during the first 5 years of production is a net loss

when factoring annual cow cost with development or purchase cost. In short, genomic scores for commercial heifers can be used to improve confidence in selection decisions which can reduce development cost with faster genetic improvement in targeted traits.

Definitions

Igenity Beef Trait Definitions

Maternal Traits

Birth weight (BW) — Variation in birth weight a heifer or bull will pass along to its offspring. A higher score indicates greater genetic potential for heavier birth weight.

Calving ease direct (CED) — Percentage of unassisted births, indicating greater probability a calf will be born unassisted out of a first-calf heifer. Genetic factors such as birth weight and shape of the calf are included in CED. A higher value is greater calving ease.

Calving ease maternal (CEM) — The probability a first-calf heifer will calve unassisted. CEM includes all genetic factors that impact a heifer’s ability to calve unassisted, such as pelvic area and her genetic contribution to birth weight. A higher value is greater calving ease.

Stayability (STAY) — The chance a heifer will remain in the herd as a productive cow until at least six years of age. A higher value is desired.

Heifer pregnancy rate (HPR) — A heifer’s potential to conceive during breeding season, relative to other heifers. A higher value is desired.

Docility (DOC) — The animal’s genetic potential to be calm or have calm offspring. Higher scores indicate a higher probabiltiy of progeny with acceptable disposition.

Milk (MILK) — Expressed as pounds of calf weaning weight affected by the milk production of a calf’s dam. This is not a prediction of actual pounds of milk produced.

Performance Traits

Residual feed intake (RFI) — This is an indicator of feed efficiency. It is the difference in animals’ daily consumption of feed to achieve the same level of daily gain. Lower RFI indicates greater feed efficiency.

Average daily gain (ADG) — Based on pounds of gain per day. The Igenity score for ADG identifies an animal’s genetic potential for post-weaning growth.

Weaning weight (WW) — Pounds at age of 205 days. Yearling weight (YW)— Pounds at age of 365 days.

Carcass Traits

Tenderness (TNDR) — Animals’ genetic potential for carcass tenderness as measured by the Warner-Bratzler Shear Force test. A higher score indicates greater tenderness.

USDA marbling (MRB) — Marbling score indicates the degree of marbling in the rib eye at the twelfth rib expressed in USDA marbling units.

Ribeye area (REA) — Estimates muscling in a beef carcass and is measured in square inches of the ribeye muscle at the twelfth rib.

Fat thickness (FAT) — Scored as depth of fat in inches over the ribeye muscle at the twelfth rib. Higher fat thickness scores equate to lower lean yield.

Hot carcass weight (HCW) — Hot carcass weight is the hot or unchilled weight of the carcass after slaughter and the removal of the head, hide, intestinal tract, and internal organs.
