One of the world’s finest acoustic guitarists, Andy McKee breathes new life into the instrument.

Harmony-soaked vocals coupled with the electrofolk charisma of the Trucco sisters, Fémina is Argentine soul music with a purpose! Lyrically poignant with hip hop and Latin folk major influences, the duo’s unbounded sound and theatrical visuals are vehicles that connect people’s emotions and open them up to new ways of thinking. Their diverse music is characterized by showstopping harmonies and a magical on-stage chemistry, which incorporates Latin American instruments and melodies. While Fémina is from Argentina, their sound is universal.

Buffalo Rose is a wildly charismatic six-piece modern folk/Americana band that will change your entire perspective on acoustic music. Inspired by a world of idiosyncratic influences, this wildly diverse group crafts original songs that are emotive and meticulously arranged. Buffalo Rose puts on dynamic live shows that are unforgettable. Songs range from upbeat and moving to sad and sweet then back again—they bring the entire audience along. Their latest EP, Rabbit, was released February 2022; it was created in collaboration with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Tom Paxton.

UF alum Todd Barry has been serving up deceptively deadpan comedy for decades. He’s made appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. Barry has released three one-hour stand-up specials including his latest one for Netflix, Spicy Honey. In 2017, he penned his critically-acclaimed travel memoir, Thank You For Coming To Hattiesburg.

Lauded for his rich, warm, and mesmerizing sound on the concert stage, cellist Gabriel Martins has established himself as one of the world’s most enthralling young artists. Strad Magazine declared his New York City recital debut to be “flawlessly played” and “a deeply moving experience.” His artistry has already been recognized through an extensive list of accolades that include the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Young Classical Artists Trust Grand Prize.

Legendary cellist Ralph Kirshbaum says Gabriel has “revealed heart, passion, intellect, and a finely-nuanced palette of colors in a compelling manner worthy of a seasoned artist.”

Overflowing with rich imagery, peak athleticism, and humorous charm, BodyVox helped push dance into the 21st century, and now they’re celebrating 25 years of breathtaking productions. Funny and quirky, to be sure, but BodyVox is also equal parts charming and awe-inspiring.

Led by Pilobolus alum Jamey Hampton and MOMIX co-founder Ashley Roland, BodyVox has become known for its visual virtuosity and unique ability to combine dance, theatre, and film into a unique celebration of movement.

Five incredibly versatile actors play multiple roles, weaving together dialogues and switching between characters all while maintaining a clear narrative that is true to the original. It sounds like madness, but there’s a method in it and it works.

Thanks to Bobby Rush’s long memory and quick wit, he’s hailed as one of the blues’ best storytellers, which shines through during his live shows. The two-time, Grammy-winning legend, and Blues Hall of Famer, incorporates humor, prolific guitar, and harmonica playing into his stunning performances.

Pair this icon with 26-year-old UFPA favorite, Jontavious Willis, and you’ll have the ultimate blues experience. Willis was nominated for a Grammy in 2020, thanks to his latest album, Spectacular Class. He’s a fingerpicker, flat-picker, and slide player who masterfully plays guitar, harmonica, banjo, and cigar box.

The characters we know and love come to life in a beautifully crafted musical stage adaptation. Featuring the Sherman Brothers’ classic Grammy Award-winning music with further songs by A.A. Milne. This fresh stage variation is told with stunning life-sized puppetry through the eyes of our favorite characters, in a new story from the Hundred Acre Wood. Jessica Vosk is a celebrated singer and actress known for her starring role on Broadway and in the national tour of Wicked. Her strengths are in her stage presence and in her natural humor! She draws audiences in with her unique voice and by sharing real-life stories about her pandemic experience, journey to Broadway, her love life, and formative years.

Vosk made her sold-out Carnegie Hall debut November 2021 and had the leading role as Anita in West Side Story with the San Francisco Symphony, which was nominated for a Grammy.

ITZHAK PERLMAN AND ROHAN DE SILVA MONDAY, MARCH 6, 2023 | 7:30 P.M. | PHILLIPS CENTER

Beyond his technical mastery, legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman is known for his musical eloquence.

It’s a quality that shines through his playing both of classical and klezmer music. Perlman holds a superstar status, which is rarely extended to classical artists. Audiences around the globe not only respond to Perlman’s artistry, but his life-long passion for making magnificent music.

Performing with Perlman is grandmaster pianist Rohan De Silva. De Silva has performed at the White House as well as in some of the most prestigious halls around the world. He has been a faculty member of The Juilliard School since 1991.

The members of San Salvador have made it their mission to search for what they call “universal folklore,” rooted in their region’s deep troubadour traditions yet oscillating between cultures and musical genres.

Singing in Occitan­—a language that is spoken primarily in southern France—this group of six singers composes hypnotic vocal harmonies cascading over shifting patterns of compelling polyrhythmic percussion. It’s impossible to resist the spell they cast with each note as they remarkably balance intricate drumming, hand claps, and their towering voices.

Talk about an overachiever, at just 22 years old Risa Hokamura is on the short-list of the world’s great violinists.

She picked up the instrument at the age of 3 and by 10, Hokamura was already capturing top prizes at competitions in her native Japan. In 2018, she earned international attention by winning First Prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions at the age of 17. She’s since toured the world performing recitals and as a soloist with orchestras. We can’t wait to see her talent in the intimate Squitieri Studio Theatre.

Writing for The New York Times, dance critic Brian Seibert finished his review of Nrityagram Dance Ensemble by proclaiming, “the only proper response to dancers this amazing is worship.” That may sound like hyperbole, but devotion is in their DNA. Today, Nrityagram is a thriving community of artists dedicated to the practice of Odissi, a 2,000-year-old classical dance of India. The village is home to a school inspired by the Gurukula, an ancient teaching paradigm, and an internationally renowned dance ensemble. The mission is to nurture dance professionals through the gurukula system, perform on a global stage, and forge a community through outreach.

As you’ll see, Nrityagram Dance Ensemble has been recognized as the torchbearers for Odissi, honoring the ancient practice while carrying the artform into the 21st century.
