Packing: Essential items that you should remember when packing: 

Passport or travel document

Laptop and charger (You will have access to a 24 hour computer suite)

There are certain items that you won’t need to bring. You can find out about what will be included in your accommodation here.

The British weather can be very varied so we suggest packing clothes for both rain and sun. Students usually dress informally for lectures and dress up the finale event.

You can buy all normal products such as groceries, toiletries and washing powder cheaply in the UK. Shops on campus can supply most everyday items, with supermarkets or larger shops in the city offering a wider selection. If you would like to set up a budget for your time at UEA the International Student Calculator can be a useful tool. You can find out more about the cost of living in Norwich at Numbeo.

Money: Cash points can be found on campus and throughout Norwich city centre. There is also a Bureau de Change located in the shop on campus at the Post Office kiosk. We advise that you do not carry around or keep large amounts of cash in your room or on your person. You may wish to notify your bank that you will be withdrawing money from UK cash points, and check if there are any fees when withdrawing money or using your card abroad.

Ishibashi Foundation Summer School 2018 Checklist, Travel and Packing Advice Travel Guide to Norwich: Please let us know how and when you will be arriving at UEA before 31 May 2018 by completing the arrivals survey.

We highly recommend that you take advantage of our inclusive meet and greet service for you arrivals day. 



Private airport coach transfer from Heathrow Airport to UEA at on arrivals day 28 July (departing Heathrow at 15:00). There will also be a return coach transfer to Heathrow at 08:00 on departures day 18 August.

Taxi transfer from Norwich airport, railway or bus station (organised at set times from 12:00).

There is no additional fee for the meet and greet service.

If you are arriving on campus independently please provide details so we know when to expect you and to give you your accommodation keys.

Passing through customs and immigration at the airport: When arriving in the UK all passengers will need to pass through Immigration Control. You will have to join the correct line depending whether you are an EEA / Swiss National or from anywhere else. If you are arriving from outside of the EEA you can expect an Immigration Officer to ask you some questions, this is perfectly normal and might include:    

Why are you coming to the UK? Where and what are you studying?

How are you going to fund your studies?

Where will you be living?

You will also need to provide these documents:     

A valid passport or travel document A valid Visa A completed Landing Card (given to you on the plane) All the documents (or copies) you used to apply for your Visa A health or medical certificate, including your tuberculosis certificate, if required

Flights: Useful websites to start looking for flights include Skyscanner, Google flights and Expedia.

Make sure to allow yourself at least two hours at the airport from landing, to account for immigration/visa checks and baggage reclaim. To take advantage of our coach transfer from Heathrow, your flight should therefore have landed by 13:00.

The closest airport to UEA is Norwich International Airport, which have direct flights from Amsterdam (Schiphol Airport). The flight from Amsterdam will take around 45 minutes, and the taxi journey from the airport to UEA will take around 20 minutes. Let us know when you will be arriving at Norwich Airport by completing the arrivals survey, and we will arrange your pick-up.

Alternatively, you can fly into Stansted or Gatwick Airport and travel to Norwich independently by train or coach. You can find more information about transport to and from the airports on the Stansted and Gatwick websites.

Ishibashi Foundation Summer School 2018 Checklist, Travel and Packing Advice Train: The best place to book train tickets in the UK is Trainline. Choose the airport you are arriving at as your departure station when booking your tickets, and Norwich as your destination.

Stansted Airport is located 1.5 hours northeast of London, and you can take a train to Norwich directly from Stansted Airport station.

Gatwick Airport is located 0.5 hours southeast of London, to travel to Norwich you will need to change trains in London and use the London underground.

Let us know when you will be arriving at Norwich Railway Station by completing the arrivals survey, and we will arrange your pick-up.

Coach: National Express have coaches going to Norwich from Stansted and Gatwick Airport and many stations and bus stops in London. The National Express stop “University of East Anglia (Norwich)” is right here on campus, so make sure you book your ticket to this destination. You can alternatively chose “Norwich Bus Station” as your destination. Just let us know where and when you will be arriving by completing the arrivals survey, and we will arrange your pick-up.

Megabus also have coaches going to Norwich, however they only depart from Victoria Station in the centre of London. Megabus is usually the cheaper option, and if you buy in advance you can get tickets to Norwich for between £1 and £7. Chose the “Norwich, University of East Anglia” bus stop.
