Editor’s note Well, we all made it through the killer 13 week run that is the first half of second semester—hopefully unscathed—with only 7 weeks of dentistry for the DMDs to go for this year! So much has gone on in OHCWA from the events, to the UniFi, to the fantastic news of future renovations of the common room.

Well that’s all from me, have a great mid sem break, and good luck for the final stretch of this year!

I

t’s a super stressful time of year with the break arriving just in time! There’s not much I can tell you really, OHCWA is still standing - despite multiple fire alarms last week…

On the education front, this semester we had guidebooks released extremely early with all assessment dates available – previously unheard of! So we’re pretty happy about that. We’ve had our feedback forms sent in to third floor, which were read and responded to by the Head of School.

We were lucky enough to have Dr Heitz-Mayfield deliver a fantastic lecture on peri-implantitis, which was extremely successful as KJG Sutherland lecture theatre was literally three seats away from being full. Thanks to the Ed reps, Guild and UWA we now have unifi working in KJG Sutherland lecture theatre – again previously unheard of! There is a whole lot more to report, but let’s leave it to the last issue!

One thing that absolutely has to be mentioned is that the UDSS has been successful in their application for the UWA Alumni Grant – securing $30,000 to renovate our common room! AGAIN, previously unheard of! A massive thank you to our VicePresident Chin-Hang Rose Kong and her husband Andy for putting so much work into the application – it would not have been possible without you!

GV Black’s cocktail night was a blast, and our annual

quiz night was one of my best nights out all year so a big thanks to the social reps and the ed reps for putting these together. Now, the assignments are building up and I gotta hit the books.

G V Black’s Cocktail Party

W

hat does a gathering of elegantly dressed dent students, a father of modern dentistry and a classy soirée at Llama bar have in common?

That’s right, the 2nd (after dent dinner) biggest UDSS event of the year, GV Black’s!!! A highlight of the dental calendar, this celebration of GV Black’s birthday provides the hard-working dent students with a chance to let their hair down - with style. As always, such an event is also a great opportunity for all the different years in dentistry to socialise and just have a great time!

B

right and early (well, 9am—but dent students don’t get many sleep-ins) on the 11th July everyone gathered together for a morning of fun and fitness. With an expert display of sporting finesse by some and a...little less….for others, everyone felt encouraged by the great display of teamwork and sportsmanship on the day.

Starting with a good few rounds of dodgeball, the day then progressed to volleyball and finished with indoor soccer. There was a great turnout and everyone had a fantastic morning for the last sports day of the year. Thanks to everyone involved in organising this great day!!!

ADSA 2015 Dental Attendee OF ADSA 2015 Convention | Parnian Zareie

I

n July, a group of 12 of us from first year went to the ADSA dental student convention held in Cairns. After weeks of going back and forth to apply for our approved leave we were very excited for our new educational experience. However, this excitement and happiness was dampened slightly upon arrival where we were not allowed to check in to our hotels on arrival due to a miscommunication.

Having flown out from Perth at 10pm and arrived at the hotel at 5am, we were all looking very forward to a bit of a sleep before the first day of conferences. Instead, we wandered along the Cairns esplanade, watching the sun come up along the east coast. Needless to say it was very difficult to concentrate during the seminars as most of us had very little sleep.

However, on that first day we stuck it out until a very interesting presentation at the end of the day where we got to work with bone grafting material from MIS Implants.

Another highlight from the seminars was the Botox and dermal filler demonstration later on in the week. It was very interesting to hear about the proposed aesthetic and medical benefits of Botox and also the arguments for dentists to administer these injections.

There were live demonstrations on the day for Botox injections into the masseter to aid in decreasing grinding, clenching and temporomandibular joint wear, Botox injections around the face typically used for maintaining youthful appearance and the injection of dermal filler into the lips.

Student Convention

However, it is no secret socialising is also a very big part of the dental student convention and it was a very interesting experience socialising with dental students from other dental schools around Australia and building our dental networks from the start of our education.

Personally, I found it very interesting to speak to the other students and to compare courses and where we were all at in our education albeit a little annoying that people my age were in their penultimate year and very close to becoming graduate dentists (which they did not fail to brag about to no end).

The highlight of the trip for myself was definitely the trip to the Great Barrier Reef, which ADSA had organised for us as part of the convention.

Most amusing was probably that the ferry ran out of vomit bags on the way to the island and had to hand out cups to all the passengers but luckily there were those of lucky enough to have fallen asleep for the one hour trip there.

Overall, I think I speak on behalf of all of us that went when I say the money and the efforts spent on making this trip happen were very worthwhile as we all gained a lot from this experience.

Peri-implantitis lecture

By Professor Lisa Heitz-Mayfield

B

ack in July this year, the UDSS was able to provide all students with the amazing opportunity to learn the latest about peri-implantitis by Professor Lisa HeitzMayfield, a world-renowned expert.

Professor Heitz-Mayfield, an Adelaide graduate, obtained a Masters in Periodontology (1996) from Lund University, Sweden and went on to complete a PhD in 1998 on periodontal and peri-implant regeneration.

She received a scholarship at the BrĂĽnemark Osseointegration Centre, Sweden, and an ITI scholarship at the University of Berne, Switzerland where she subsequently became Head of the Oral Microbiology Research Laboratory, 1999-2003. During this time she received the AndrĂŠ Schroeder Research Prize in Implant Dentistry. She has more than 45 publications in peer reviewed international journals and is author of the Peri-implant infection chapter of the latest edition of the Jan Lindhe Textbook: Clinical Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. Professor Heitz-Mayfield has coauthored the latest ITI Treatment Guide on Pre-

vention and Management of Biological and Hardware Complications in Implant Dentistry.

Her current positions include Adjunct Professor at the International Research Collaborative, The University of Western Australia, Associate Professor at The University of Sydney, and at The University of Hong Kong. She is Chairman of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) Australasian section, Chair of the ITI Research Committee and member of the ITI Board of Directors. Professor HeitzMayfield is active in research in implant dentistry and periodontology and has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. She maintains a specialist periodontal practice in Perth, Western Australia.

The event had a massive turnout. Kenneth J Sutherland lecture theatre was packed with students from all years (and staff) eager to expand their knowledge on a subject that is ever-growing with the rise in use of dental implants.
