Studio Brief - The aim of the studio was to design mass housing (150 units) in Dariyapur in Ahmedabad. There were different types of units to be designed : single occupancy, four occupancy and six occupancy units. The site was located near three closed down textile mills of Ahmedabad.

Site development The edge condition was treated to be frequently used by the residents of the chawl and the people living in the housing project.

Massing on site Concept - considering site and context, single occupancy units were placed towards the industrial area and as we go towards the chawl, units for family increases.

PEOPLE AND PLACE (A community centre for local people to meet.)

Studio Brief - The aim of the studio was to design a community centre for the local people of Shilaj village in Ahmedabad. The centre should have accomodation for functions like gruh udhyog, veterinary clinic and meeting space. Shilaj is segmented according to different caste and community ‘vaas’ of people. We experienced different culture, lifestyle, economy, rituals, architecture in different streets.

Plan 0 2 4 10 m The canopy was fragmented in parts, and had a connection between them with bamboo pergolas.

The pergola defines the connectivity to spaces and pathway to reach the amphitheatre.

Studio Brief - To design an institute which is an extension of existing institute ‘Dharmalaya’ in Bir. It should have functions like skill upgradation centre, dormitory which can accommodate 20 people. The functions should be for the local people and for visitors or travellers.

Group workDocumentation of the settlements of Dhanadi and Badi of Bir in Himachal Pradesh.

• Dhanadi- 5 houses • Badi- 11 houses Activities like dyeing, weaving, knitting were incorporated as they were observed in context.

Site Location- Badi settlements, Himachal Pradesh Context- Settlements in Badi.

Process Models • The main concept of design was singularity and to unite the functions of the institution.

• Linear form was an idea to have great view of the valley through the longer sides.

• The concept of half hexagonal design was implemented with a progressive increment of height throughout the institution.

• Linear staircase, large openings and roofing details and their materials were explored.

TEMPORARY SHELTER (Environment for astronomical researchers.)

MINIMALISTIC

ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY

CIRCULAR FORM

Studio Brief - To design a temporary house and working space for two astronomical researchers.

Site location - Aaloha Hills, Mubarakpur.

The site is was tropical with less amount of vegetation on it. The climate was hot and dry. The site faced harsh sun throughout the day.

Material- Earthbag. Because it can be made by the soil of site and can be returned when not needed.

• Main concept minimalistic and the structure can be easily dismantled.

Circular formTo prevent harsh sunlight to fall perpendicularly on any surface.

Small openings to take cooler wind into the sleeping space.

Toilet, kitchen and washing area are independentTo prevent bad smell to enter into sleeping and working space.

• Understanding the Kathkuni construction method.

• In the settlements in Badi and Dhanadi, the ground floor of any house was occupied by the cattles and the first floor or above that were occupied by the owners.

• Orientation faced to South-West, to recieve more heat throughout the day. Stone wall re-radiated heat at night.

MATERIAL EXPLORATION BAMBOO

An exercise to study joinery of bamboo which can be used in construction.

• Structural study model of a bamboo joinery that can be used to join beams and column of bamboo.

• It gives us a choice to choose the direction of primary beam(with 4 units of bamboo) and secondary beam(with 2 units of bamboo).

• If a bamboo is damaged, it can be replaced by another bamboo very easily.

DAI HARIR(DADA HARI) STEPWELL

Location- Asarva, Ahmedabad.

Exercise - Technical study of the stepwell which included site visits, measure drawings and model making.

Dai Harir is a five storied stepwell constructed in year 1499 AD. The architectural style is Islamic. The stepwell lies just behind the tomb of Dai Harir.
