ENGAGE. INSPIRE. TRANSFORM.
Learning
for a Greater Purpose The University of Dallas is a living institution— vibrantly so — distinguished by three terms: Catholic, liberal arts, university. A liberal arts education enables our students to embrace more fully their own humanity, particularly as rational beings made to flourish in community with others, and frees them to become leaders and responsible citizens. Intrinsic to a liberal arts education is the notion of studying a thing for its own sake and not, say, merely for its utilitarian value. To have a practical application does not render a discipline bereft of intrinsic value; there is order and beauty to how data sets are arranged in a spreadsheet, rhetorical goodness to be appreciated in a marketing plan, and deep psychological truths to be appreciated in cultivating the art of pedagogy, whether teaching management or cybersecurity. What matters most is the disposition of the learner, the attunement to and appreciation for mastering knowledge in service to a greater purpose. As a partner in our educational mission, thank you for your commitment to enabling students to discover their purpose, to better serve their communities, and to help transform our culture for the common good.
Jonathan J. Sanford, Ph.D. President | Professor of Philosophy

Joe Gigler, MBA ’80, and his wife, Carol, committed over $400,000 to support MBA students in UD’s Gupta College of Business, the largest endowed scholarship in the College’s history. Gigler, who went on to start a number of successful automotive businesses, credits his success to John and Elizabeth Hrivnak, a humble couple who owned a small grocery store in Pennsylvania where Gigler worked as a young man. “The Hrivnaks gave me a wonderful opportunity to learn business from the inside,” said Gigler. “They taught me hard work, values and ethics. Establishing this scholarship in their name is the perfect way to honor their impact on my life.”
“UD is a Catholic university rooted in values that are important to us. Your reputation is all you have, and that principle of integrity has guided every decision I’ve made as a leader.” Joe Gigler, MBA ’80
