ir die eerste keer in baie jare kon ’n vrou van Uitenhage saam aan die Kersfees-lamsboud smul.
Danksy ’n vroeë Kersgeskenk van kunstande meen Leona Lightfoot (36) kon sy op Kersdag vir die eerste keer in ’n dekade vir haar ’n vol bord vleis skep. “En dan kan ek nog roomys ook eet, sommer twee of drie bakkies, want ek het mos nou tande om die lekker koue goed te kou,” het Lightfoot opgewonde gesê. Lightfoot, wat weens ’n tekort aan kalsium haar laaste tand voor die ouderdom van 25 jaar verloor het, is een van die gelukkiges wat valstande vir Kersfees gekry het. Máár die geskenk is nie deur ’n man in ’n rooi oorpak afgelewer nie, maar wel deur Ralph Meintjes, ’n tandheelkunde-tegnikus van Uitenhage, wat behoeftige mense met sy Adopt-A-Smile-projek help. Meintjies het ook ’n Kersete vir die gelukkiges gereël. Dié vyfgangmaaltyd is in die Kelway-hotel in Somerstrand gehou. Hier het Lightfoot haar tande in ’n stuk vleis ingeslaan en kon sy sonder haar hand voor haar mond met die ander gaste gesels. “Dit het my weer selfvertroue gegee. Ek kan praat sonder skaamte en hou nie op met glimlag nie,” het Lightfoot gesê. Ook Victor McHugh (44) meen hy het sy “ou lewe” weer terug, danksy sy vol stel tande. “Mense het my geoordeel en geklas[sifiseer] as ’n tipe persoon.”
Sonder die nodige finansies het McHugh sy hoop op nuwe tande laat vaar. “Was dit nie vir Ralph nie, was ek nou nog die ou met die gap. Maar dié Kersfees het ek

Riebeek donates R20 600 to SPCA T
he girls from Riebeek College donated an astonishing R20 600 to the Uitenhage SPCA. Through this project, as with their other charity related programmes, they again showed that Riebeek girls have a sense of community responsibility, compassion, empathy and a huge love of furry friends. “This is such a special event and we have doubled what we normally give,” said Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School. “Riebeek does not just give a once off donation, we have been giving consistently for many, many years,” said Marilyn Woods, principal of Riebeek College Girls’ High School. In fact Riebeek’s relationship with the local SPCA dates back to the late sixties, when Betty Lynch started teaching at Riebeek College and made the SPCA a vital part of the school’s curriculum. Natheera Sirkhotte and Lenaé Naidoo (head and deputy head of the Riebeek SPCA committee) handed over a cheque to the SPCA Uitenhage and district branch at a special assembly. Frequent power outages crippling industry HEILIE COMBRINCK “All supply from Market Substation has been lost affecting a large area of Uitenhage. Staff are attending. No time frame.” This power outage message on Monday, left many in Despatch and Uitenhage with frustration, starting their business trade for the year without electricity. Athol Trollip, DA Mayoral Candidate: Nelson Mandela Bay said, “With the entire Uitenhage and Despatch area once again without power, industry is at a standstill and jobs are being lost, because the NMB government does not care enough to build and maintain sustainable infrastructure.” Trollip condemned the electricity infrastructure crisis that continues to paralyse industry.
“Without an adequate maintenance infrastructure budget, municipal electrical equipment cannot be serviced regularly, which leads to persistent and avoidable power outages. “We have consistently called for the formation of sub-councils to improve service delivery and technician response time to a forgotten part of the Metro. The Metro’s industrial sector, most of which exists in Uitenhage, is the economic industrial hub of Nelson Mandela Bay and as such needs to be protected from shutdown.” Trollip said he had written to the Mayoral Committee Member for Infrastructure and Engineering, Andile Mfunda, asking for an immediate intervention plan to prevent future blackouts. Power supply had been restored on Monday by 13:15.

Hundreds arrested during weekend Members of the police in the Uitenhage Cluster are adamant to combat crime effectively in their policing area. According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Gerda Swart, police officials have arrested more than 140 suspects during crime prevention operations over the past weekend. “Arrests made ranged from assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, house breaking and theft, to theft out of motor vehicle and robbery. A total of 38 traffic fines were issued, 19 suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of drugs and 60 fines were issued for other

Toe hoor ons van Maclear se groot probleme en weet dit is waar die water heen moet gaan.” Volgens Griebenow is water in Maclear tans so skaars dat pasiënte in hospitale en ouetehuise nie water het om hul pille mee te sluk nie. “Ek het nie besef dit gaan só rof nie. Daarom het ek op Facebook ’n boodskap uitgestuur om vir water te vra. Ek het nooit gedink die reaksie sal goed wees nie, maar my vriende het goeie kennisse wat bereid is om te help,” het hy gesê. Tussen die mense van Despatch, Uitenhage en Port Elizabeth en die Tsitsikamma Crystal-watermaatskappy is vier ton water binne net drie dae bymekaargemaak. En die “waterpyplyn” is gratis deur Quality Express-voervoerdienste danksy Riaan

VWSA invests in education of employees’ children The Children of VW Bursary, which places learners in well-resourced schools from Grades 10 to 12, has seen the number of beneficiaries increase from 5 in 2012 to 26 learners in 2016. Children of Volkswagen employees apply in their Grade 9 year and after an application process and testing, the successful learners are placed within schools such as Woodridge, St Georges and Brylin, as well as schools further afield namely St Patricks in Kokstad and St Joseph’s in Cape Town. Eight learners matriculated in 2015 with seven learners meeting the minimum requirements to study for a bachelor’s degree and one to study a diploma. So far the bursary scheme has seen 13 learners enter university. Over the last 4 years more than R5 million has been invested by Volkswagen Group South Africa in the education of learners across the three grades. “Education is a key focus at VWSA and we are proud to be able to assist children in our community further their development,” said Volkswagen Group South Africa Managing Director and Chairman Thomas

The Fellowship Programme runs throughout the year, alongside tertiary studies and includes seminars, guest speakers, experiential learning activities and project based deliverables. SA property market still beats inflation The growth of house prices continues to beat inflation and the demand for homes still exceeds supply in South Africa’s major metro-

amidst glum economic reporting paints a more hopeful picture of the property market. He says looking at registrations in the Deeds Office, property prices of secure lifestyle estates increased by 11.1% in 2015, taking properties of below R1.5 million value into account. “The average selling price in South Africa was just under R1 million and the number of units sold in 2015 increased by 9.6% from the previous year,” he points out. “Close to 200 000 homes were sold over the past 12 months.” Cronje says 51% of buyers were first-time home buyers, taking bond applicant statistics into account. “Buyers continue to lean towards smaller, less maintenance security estates which explains why this type of housing still outperforms any other type of property.” He says international trends of living have changed over the past decade and people continue to shift towards lifestyle estates offering community living within the estate. “The demand for properties closer to pub-

Despatch RedSox baseball best in Metro Despatch RedSox Amateur Baseball Club took the title at champions of 2015 after beating Gelvan Athletics Baseball Club in the final of the metro championship. Dylan le Roux, SA junior player and member of RedSox, was nominated as the pitcher of the tournament with Rudi Dixon as the most valuable player for exceptional play and batting on the day. Young incumbent, Dylan Oliphant, was named the most progressed player with the most spirited player being Carlo Brink of Gelvan A. The best master player of the day was Haydon Prince, who showed there is nothing bet-
ter than hitting the ball in the sweet spot. This Saturday, Pirates will take on RedSox on their home ground in Lower Market Street in Uitenhage at 16:00. The following games will be on Saturday, January 23rd with action starting at 16:00 at VW PeoplePavilion when RedSox play against VW Baseball Club. Unique triathlon event for kids T
he organizers of South Africa’s leading off-road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA, are excited to introduce an XTERRA Kids event to Nelson Mandela Bay at the end of January. “Introducing an XTERRA Kids event to Nelson Mandela Bay has been long overdue,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Each year we are overwhelmed by the support that the XTERRA Kids receives in Grabouw. “We have received a number of requests and are very happy to announce that Buffelspoort, Nelson Mandela Bay and Grabouw will now follow the exact same event schedule. We are really excited by this change and look forward to welcoming families to the events.” Jeremy Yatt, Principal Officer of Fedhealth said, “what made XTERRA really appeal to us, is the fact that it allows the whole family to be involved, whether in a team, in the kids events, or in the Lite and Full. The “Birdies” to celebrate Swifts Rugby Club’s 125th year “Birdies” will once again flock to Uitenhage at the beginning of February to attend the Swifts Rugby Club’s annual reunion and memorial service. Last year’s event was a huge success and according to organiser Cicil Hayward, he hopes this year will be even a greater success as it is the 125th annual celebration of a sports club
with a one-of-a-kind rich history. Swifts is the only rugby club in South Africa, which was founded by a reverend and where many a professional rugby player started his career. Reverend Charles Jecks of St Katharine Anglican Church in Market Street, Uitenhage, during 1890 selected a team of youngsters from the church choir
