he plight of sisters from up-north in the country in support of events to help raise funds for their sister in Uitenhage, Natasha Thysse who was diagnosed with cancer, has fallen on the ears of a caring community.
Esmerelda Erasmus from Pretoria earlier this year wrote a letter requesting financial support for their sister Natasha who was diagnosed with melanoma cancer. “She has had several surgical procedures to date. She has medical aid, but unfortunately they do not cover all expenses. So we are trying to collect funds to assist with the costs of her medication which are running quite high,� said Erasmus. Fuel on Wheels, a registered non-profit charitable organisation, has geared-up cyclists from Despatch and Uitenhage to participate in a long distance challenge in raising funds for Natasha. “The response was awesome! We will tackle a 150km route starting at 06:00 on Saturday from Budget Cycles in Despatch leaving for Jeffreys Bay and on return will stop at Danskraal in Uitenhage,� said Johan Oosthuizen from Fuel on Wheels. “All interested cyclists, whether on racing or mountain bikes are most welcome to join us. It will be tough, but it will be fun and very rewarding to do this for someone like Natasha who really is in need.� The cyclists will be accompanied by two motorcycle clubs, Entangled Freedom and Victory Riders. Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officials as well as local businesses like Symara Knitwear, Odds & Ends, Peter Benn Motors and a private ambulance service are supporting the challenge. Monster will sponsor the refreshments for participating cyclists. “It is an honour to be part of events where the community stand together like this. Let’s face it, we need each other,� said Oosthuizen. The participation fee for the cycling challenge is R50. Budget Cycles is situated at 8 Moreson Street, Despatch. )On May 26th at 19:00 Danskraal will host a Dans-Eet-Kuier-Lag event in aid of Natasha. Tickets are R100 per person.

Wear tekkies in support of needy children TEKKIE Tax is an international fundraising campaign that benefits many non-governmental organizations and this year CMR Uitenhage, for the first time, is a beneficiary. The fun of participating in Tekkie Tax will all happen on Friday, 25 May. CMR is a registered child protection organization in Uitenhage at 41 John Street, and deliver services to all children irrespective of race, creed or gender. Schools receive R15 000 to rebuild classrooms EIGHT schools in Uitenhage were the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition, each receiving a building material voucher to the value of R15 000 at the official refurbished Cashbuild Uitenhage store opening ceremony. General repairs and classroom upgrades were some of the plans for which the school principals have suggested they will use their Cashbuild vouchers. Caritas Primary School, James Ndulula Primary School and Magqabi Primary School were three of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R15 000. A very happy Mr Meyes from Caritas Primary School is excited to be able to finally paint and upgrade some of the classrooms for the learners. “These children have worked so hard for this competition and we are so happy to be able to reward them with brand new classrooms,” said Meyes. James Ndulula Primary School’s deputy
principal, Ms L Bonani, was over the moon at the news of her school being selected as winners. “It has been such a long time since we have been able to do anything for the school so this voucher has come at the best time. We plan on making upgrades for the classrooms as well as putting in better windows, and in order to keep the children’s learning material safe,” said Bonani. Mr Hoho, the principal of Magqabi Primary School, was also delighted and very proud of his learners. He said, “Most of the classrooms in the school don’t have any doors, so our first plan is to erect doors to the classrooms which will allow our learners to have quieter lessons as there will be less noise coming from other rooms.” At the official refurbished Cashbuild store opening ceremony, when the building material vouchers totalling R120 000 were handed out to the eight winning schools, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was judged and presented to a learner from Innes Primary School who was the overall winner of the artwork competition. How to spot illegal gambling operations THE Casino Association of South Africa (“CASA”) is calling on South Africans to be wary of illegal gambling establishments and is urging the public to report any suspected illegal gambling operations. CASA, which represents the interests of the country’s legal casino industry, as well as the public that the industry serves, warns that the scourge of illegal gambling operations is growing by the day. By raising awareness of how people can spot a casino that is operating without a licence, CASA aims to protect patrons and the legal gambling industry at large. There are a number of clues that the public should look out for to determine whether an establishment is legal or not. As required by gambling legislation in all provinces in South Africa, a licensed establishment must prominently display the word “casino” on the exterior of the licensed premises where gambling takes place and the trading name must include the word “casino” at all times in all its communications. In addition, a licensed casino must also display its casino licence in a conspicuous place on the licensed premises. If an establishment does not meet these requirements, it is operating without a licence and should be reported. Not only do illegal gambling operations not take steps to provide a safe and secure environment for their customers but they also expose them to prosecution. Online gambling, for example, is a fastgrowing criminal industry yet the majority of the public is unaware that all online gam-

bling is against the law in South Africa, even if the operator is based outside the country. This leaves unwitting players open to criminal prosecution, where they could be liable to pay a fine of up to R10 million or receive a prison sentence of up to 10 years or both such fine and prison sentence. Similarly, patrons of all forms of illegal gambling operations risk prosecution and exposure to such fine and prison sentence. Often set up in shopping centres and masquerading as internet cafés or lounges, these operations include banks of touch screen computers running off software smuggled from abroad. Darkened windows and security checks at the door should set off alarm bells to property owners and customers. The South African Police Service has conducted raids on these types of operations based on tip offs from the public, arresting players and operators. Illegal gambling not only puts players at risk but negatively impacts the South African economy in general. The legal, regulated casinos that CASA represents contribute massively to the fiscus through a variety of taxes (36% of the value generated) and in the financial year ended March 2017, for the first time, casino gambling revenue dropped by almost 2%. When a good friend of mine had only a few more days to live she asked me whether I thought she had made a difference in the lives of others. “She had been a school principal herself and to this day people tell me stories about what she had meant to them. That is what we all desire, to leave some kind of legacy that someone lives a better life because of us. “Perhaps a passing word has helped someone, perhaps we will never know how significant that word had been. The most important thing to remember is that we shouldn’t seek for recognition. “We should all desire to be part of a life that matters. It doesn’t take any particular skill, all it needs is caring and kindness. “As Mother Theresa said, ‘Do not wait for leaders. Do it alone, person to person’. Awaken the greatness within. Don’t expect thanks or recognition. You may become the reason for someone else’s greatness. Perhaps you’ll
never know,” said Stear. )Natalie Stear first joined the nursing profession, becoming a registered medical and surgical nurse, before she made a major career change earning her Master’s degree in Education at Rhodes University (cum laude). She gained recognition in the teaching profession and education in South Africa when she served as President of the South African Teachers’ Association and was instrumental in the formation of the National Union of Educators, now NAPTOSA. For this she was honoured with a Life Associate Award. During the time of the transition in education in SA she served on several committees and was honoured by SACE (South African Council for Education) by being selected among the top 100 educators to be registered by the Council. During her 13 years’ tenure as Principal of Riebeek College, the school was listed for three consecutive years in the Sunday Times top 100 schools in SA and it was the first state school in SA to vote in favour of opening to all races. Also during this time, every matriculant passed. Natalie Stear retired as a school principal at the end of the year 2000.

Licences for generators and solar panels: public to comment THE National Energy Regulator (Nersa) has drafted new regulations which require citizens to register and pay licence fees for their generator or solar panels, whether connected to the grid or not. In a statement issued by Energy Expert Coalition, they urge all South Africans, from peaceful pensioners to street vendor barbers and large business owners, to oppose the new Nersa regulations for small-scale embedded generators (SSEG Rules). Provision for public comments closes on 31 May 2018. Debra, one of the South Africans opposing the new regulations said, “We have to find ways to make cost of living less and survival easier with rising prices. This is unacceptable to burden people with registration fees that have no right to be levied by government institutions for not even creating the alternative to people.” Under the new rules, which have been in the pipeline for months, is the requirement for all owners/buyers of small-scale “electricity generators” less than 1 MW to make an application for the establishment of the installation to their local distributor (municipality or Eskom) and then to register with Nersa. “I view the rules as draconian,” says energy expert Ted Blom, a partner at Mining & Energy Advisors. “These rules apply to all small installations, whether for private or public use and whether they are to be connected to the grid or not”. Blom highlights that the definitions and rules are far too wide as they essentially extend right down to micro-solar chargers for cell phones. The definitions are also not clear

The ambit of these regulations is similar to the unworkable and failed Gauteng e-Toll regulations yet far wider in that they apply to almost all 55 million South Africans in all nine provinces. “These rules are poorly drafted and unworkable and will result in wide-scale civil disobedience if promulgated,” warns Blom. Such regulations will result in a permitting system, and eventually, licence fees will be instituted to fund policing of installations. This added cost will give rise to yet another financial burden for ordinary SA citizens, which Blom makes clear “is a regrettable situation which we will challenge”. Nersa has invited the public to comment and provide input on the draft rules. Dít was nóg ’n eerste vir Janecke Schuin (11) van die Laerskool Sonop op Despatch nadat sy in 2016 haar been in ’n fratsongeluk verloor het. Janecke is tussen twee motors vasgepen en haar regterbeen is so erg beseer dat dit kort daarna geamputeer is. Sy het daarvan bly droom om weer netbal te speel. Verlede jaar is haar droom bewaarheid toe sy met ’n spesiale sport-kunsbeen saam met haar maats begin oefen het. Janecke was Saterdag in die verdedigende posisie van vleuel teen die Laerskool Sunridge in Port Elizabeth op die baan. Sy is net een keer vir ’n voetfout gestraf, spog Vicki Schuin oor haar dogter. Assiduous efforts by dedicated members from the Uitenhage Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority, proved to be effective when a perpetrator was sentenced effectively on a charge of rape. Nxati Fete (19) was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment by the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 7 May 2018, for the rape of a 21-year-old victim. According to the testimony, the 21year-old victim was raped at a residence at 11:00 on 3 January 2018 in Faku Street, KwaNobuhle. Fete was arrested by detectives on 10 January 2018, brought before court and effectively sentenced on 7 May 2018. The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Laurence Soekoe welcomed the sentencing and commended the team for their comprehensive work which led to the conviction and sentencing by the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court. – REPORTER

Tennis aces selected for EP teams TENNIS playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hard work paid off when they were selected for the Eastern Cape Elephant Tennis Team for the SA Schools competition. The SA Primary School Interprovincials were held in Bloemfontein and the SA High School Interprovincials were held in Pretoria, both from April 27 to April 30. The u/13, u/15 and u/19 Tennis SA Schools Week also took place in Bloemfontein for the primary schools (u/13) and Pretoria for high schools (u/15, u/19) during the same period. The interprovincial tournament saw all the provincial tennis teams, including teams from Zimbabwe, take part. The Eastern Cape teams showed great sportsmanship and etiquette during what was a very tough tournament. The following players have been selected for the South African Schools teams: Kaylin Bouwer (u/19) and Lente Taljaard (u/15), and reserves Anja de Beer (u/17) and Annika Kleinhans (u/13).

Die Volkswagen Polo is naas die Polo Vivo die topverkoper-passasiersmotor in SuidAfrika en nagenoeg 8 300 van die nuwe Polo’s is verkoop sedert dit vroeër vanjaar bekend gestel is. Luidens ’n verklaring wat Volkswagen in Wolfsburg die naweek uitgereik het, bestaan die moontlikheid dat die veiligheidsgordel van die linkeragtersitplek in buitengewone omstandighede (soos skielike baanverwisselings met vyf passasiers aan boord)

en met insittendes in die middel- én die linkeragtersitplek kan losgaan. “Met veiligheid die hoofprioriteit vir Volkswagen is ’n tegniese oplossing gevind – ’n herontwerpte gordelslot vir die linkeragtersitplek – wat dié situasie sal verhoed,” lui die Wolfsburgverklaring. Geen beserings Luidens die verklaring onderhandel Volkswagen nou met die betrokke belanghebbendes vir finale goedkeuring van die nuwe slotmeganisme vir voertuie wat reeds in die mark is, asook vir toekomstige reeksproduksie. ’n Herroepingsveldtog om die slotmeganisme te vervang en wat net in Europa sowat 100 000 eienaars van nuwe Polo’s sal raak, sal in die volgende paar weke begin. Geen besering of sterfte wat deur die probleem veroorsaak is, is al aangemeld nie.
Anything on wheels: Madiba Bay car show Anything on wheels, is the acceptance rule for participating in the Madiba Bay Car Show which will be hosted at Otto du Plessis High School on September 1st. Sponsored by Speedyquip, it will the sixth annual car show for charity purposes hosted by the East Cape Street Rod & Custom Car Club. The exhibitors’ entry fee for the day (for a driver and one passenger) is toiletries for the aged or a donation of R20. The entrance fee for the public is R30 for
adults, R10 for scholars. Visitor can expect a variety of cars from old to new, street rods, exotics, classics, vintage and super cars, motorcycles and trikes. Meisie wen medalje vir kragoptel Michaela Eyre, ’n graad 11 leerder aan Hoërskool Despatch, het onlangs aan die aan ’n subjunior interskole kragoptel en borsdruk kragmeting deelgeneem. Sy val in die 73kg klas en het die volgende prestasies bereik: 50kg hurk, 40kg borsdruk en 75kg dooie gewig. Haar totaal van 165kg het gemaak dat Michaela die naaswenner was en sy het ‘n silwer medalje ontvang vir haar puik prestasies. ;Michaela Eyre van Hoërskool Despatch het ’n silwer medalje vir kragoptel gewen by ’n interskole kragmeting.
