Police seeking next of kin Uitenhage detectives are trying to locate the next of kin of a person who drowned in December 2011. It is alleged that the body of an unknown black person was found floating in the Kruisrivier on the 17 December 2011. The body was in an advanced state of decomposition and owing to this, it could not be determined
whether it was a male or female. D/Const Mawande Zinta of SAPS Uitenhage is appealing to the public to assist him in tracing the next of kin or anyone who may know of a person that went missing during this period. He may be contacted on 0072 764 4442. An inquest docket has been opened.

Fatal shootings near Despatch UD REPORTER Three men were found with gunshot wounds on Saturday morning in the Despatch policing area. According to police information the body of a 20 year old man was found by workers at about 07:00 on the Elands Road. The man was lying face down and he sustained a gunshot wound behind his right ear and on his cheek. “While police were attending to this crime scene, they received information of two other bodies lying in the

A 22 year old cell phone thief was arrested minutes after he allegedly robbed a teenage girl of her two cell phones in Caledon Street, Uitenhage. According to police information, the man approached the 15 year old
girl and threatened her with a knife. “He robbed her of her two Nokia cell phones. The teenager screamed and this attracted the attention of other commuters,” said police spokesperson, Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu.

Camera ‘catches’ illegal dumpers HEILIE COMBRINCK A hidden camera installed in Uitenhage did the trick by preventing residents from dumping their domestic waste at a spot once known for this kind of illegal action. “Look how clean it is! Normally at the end of the festive season this site was a sight for sore eyes,” said councillor Pieter Terblanche from Ward 51. The word was spread regarding the camera installed to take footage of residents dumping garbage and even building rubble at the corner of Verwoerd Drive and Cawood Crescent. “Footage is monitored by officials and vehicle registration numbers of the culprits dumping waste are cap-
tured. They are tracked and fines up to R2 000 can be issued for illegal dumping,” said Terblanche. He now has submitted a request to the municipality for the installation of another camera in Dalton Avenue, Mosel, where an illegal dumping site is a great concern and health hazard. “This is next to a school and poses a health hazard. I’ve picked-up documentation which is proof of residents from the neighbourhood being the culprits dumping waste here. It is a shame and residents should start taking pride, not only of their own premises, but also of their town,” said Terblanche. .Residents are urged to make use of the municipal facilities provided for domestic waste and to stop environment polution through illegal dumping.

The long arm of the law caught up with several traffic offenders as 288 cases were recorded at roadblocks set up by traffic law enforcement officers of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality last week. According to Kupido Baron, municipal spokesperson, a total of 84 warrants of arrests were executed, 50 unlicensed drivers were brought to book, 24 unlicensed motor vehicles were identified, 20 overloaded passenger vehicles were pulled off, 17 learner drivers were caught driving without supervision and two vehicles were impounded amongst others. “The road blocks were specifically put in place to ensure the safe transport of learners to schools in the city as taxis and scholar transport received special attention. Two SA Roadlink buses were discovered to have major defects at a roadworthy centre in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Baron. .

Rooikop drieling opgewonde oor hoërskooldae! HEILIE COMBRINCK Die drie Thirion-dogters wat in 2005 geskiedenis gemaak het by Laerskool Handhaaf op Uitenhage, het vanjaar hulle skoolloopbane by Hoërskool Brandwag voortgesit. Nicole, Danielle en Angelique was destyds die eerste drieling in 80 jaar wat by Handhaaf ingeskryf is. Hulle volg in hul ma, Lynette, se voetspore wat eens ook ‘n leerder aan Handhaaf was en daarna aan Brandwag gematrikuleer het. Hulle pa, Rudi, het sy skooldae by Laerskool Altona begin en by HTS Daniel Pienaar gematrikuleer. Die drieling het opgewonde vertel van hulle eerste paar dae by Brandwag en sien uit na wat op hulle wag in die hoërskool. Al drie dogters geniet netbal, maar wil vanjaar aan soveel moontlik ander buitemuurse aktiwiteite deelneem as wat hulle kan. Oor loopbaankeuses is hulle nog glad nie seker nie en wil vir eers die beste geniet wat hierdie groentjie-jaar by Brandwag vir hulle gaan bied. Volgens mnr. Wilhelm Meyer, Brandwag se skoolhoof, is drielinge ‘n rariteit by die skool. “Ons laaste drieling was die Wolmaranse, twee dogters en ‘n seun en hulle het so vier jaar gelede hier gematrikuleer. Nou is dit dié Thirions en ek glo hulle gaan hulle hoërskooljare by die skool geniet.” ;Die drieling Nicole, Danielle en Angelique Thirion het vanjaar hulle hoërskool loopbane by Hoërskool Brandwag begin. ‘Someone knows the poachers’ Proudly South African has issued an urgent call to all South Africans, to stand up and take decisive action to protect the country’s rhino population. “Somebody somewhere knows who the poachers are,” said Proudly South African CEO, Adv Leslie Sedibe. “As South Africans, it is our civic duty to inform the authorities about wrongdoing and crime. We need to blow the whistle on the culprits before our rhinos are hunted into extinction.” Alarmingly, 11 rhino carcasses have already been discovered in the Kruger National Park this year.
The carcasses were of adults which had been shot and dehorned. “The Rhino is part of our Big 5 and forms part of South Africa’s national heritage. Last year about 448 rhinos were killed for their horns (333 were killed in 2010). Some reports say at least 22 rhinos have been
killed so far this year. This is unacceptable,” said Adv Sedibe. A large proportion of rhino deaths have occurred in the Kruger National Park, where 252 rhino were killed last year. “The rate of poaching increase may appear to be faltering, but the bottom line is more rhinos than ever were

poached in 2011,” said Dr Colman O Criodain, WWF’s wildlife trade policy analyst. “If left unchecked, poaching gangs could put the survival of this iconic species in jeopardy.” Proudly South African is encouraging members of the public, who have information about rhino poachers, to step forward and inform the authorities.

Mayor Wayile pertinently stated that education is everyone’s concern and not just that of the Department of Education. The Mzam’omhle Special School in Kwanobuhle received stationery from the municipality.
“One of the major problems highlighted by Acting Principal Sipho Bodlani was high water bills. “He requested assistance from the municipality to try to install a water meter that is situated above the ground so that the school could monitor their water usage and reduce high water bills,” said Baron. The Mayor also urged all residents to partake in the uniform collection drive run by the Education Task Team during the course of this month. Donations of school shoes or uniform can be made to the Office of the Executive Mayor. “Every child deserves a pair of shoes and a uniform. I am making a clarion call to galvanize the culture of ubuntu and human solidarity,” said Executive Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile.

plaas vat sowel as deur ‘n sekere element wat snags hier in die begraafplaas karjakker. Die gebruikte kondome wat oral rondlê is bewys daarvan,” het raadslid Kenneth Kohl van Wyk 48 gesê. Volgens hom het die munisipaliteit in die verlede die heinings herstel, maar dit is nie lank nie dan word dit weer deur mense van die omiggende gemeenskappe afge-
breek. “Die toestand van die muur van herinnering is ook skokkend. Marmergedenkstene is afgebreek en van die kissies met as in is verwyder terwyl ‘n paar stukkend lê voor die muur. Dit gebeur ook dikwels dat veewagters hulle beeste by die Jubileepark-begraafplaas injaag om te wei.” Volgens Kohl sou opgraderings-
werk by die Jubileepark-begraafplaas op 1 November 2011 begin het, maar niks is sigbaar nie. “Die Metro het vir die 2011/2012 boekjaar R1 miljoen begroot vir instandhoudingswerk aan al die begraafplase in die Metro. Dit is hopeloos te min want by hierdie twee begraafplase is daar baie instandhoudingswerk nodig. “Die probleem is ook dat daar nie voltydse opsigters is nie. Die poste by beide begraafplase is vakant. Ek het inligting ontvang dat daar nie fondse is om die poste te vul nie,” het Kohl gesê. HIS week a reader asks the panel’s opinion on setting up a business as a company and whether it would be wise for a trust he is part of to own shares in it. The reader would also like to know what the tax implications of this structure might be. This is a reasonably complex issue with many aspects to consider, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Port Elizabeth. “It’s quite a common planning technique to run one’s business in a company as opposed to a sole proprietorship, where there’s no separation between the individual and the legal entity, or a close corporation.” Du Toit says one of the many reasons for this is that a trust can easily be a shareholder of the company. “Even though a trust can also be a member of a close corporation, there are more restrictive measures

Africa’s oldest open water swimming event The 2012 SPAR Redhouse River Mile, Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, will be taking place at Cannonville Village, on the Sunday’s River on Sunday 19th February and will be restricted to the first 1 000 mile swimmers only. “Started in 1924, the event is celebrating its 88th anniversary with organisers, Zports, expecting another bumper event supported by SPAR Eastern Cape and the seven associate sponsors of the event, who have ensured that the 2012 event is able to carry a cash prize pool of R28 000,” said race organiser Michael Zoetmulder of Zports Event Management. Despite 2012 being an Olympic year, triple River Mile Champion and SA Olympic swimmer, Chad Ho, from Kwazulu Natal is expected to return to defend his title. Competition amongst the ladies is very stiff with swimmer champion Jessica Liss looking to get revenge for her hashed 2011 swim where she led with 50m to go and then swam outside of the finish tunnel to allow top Ocean Racing Series swimmers, Carmen and Lauren Billson to snatch the top two placings. 79-year old Mally Richards will be attempting his 58th River Mile this year, having first

Year of records for VWSA 2011 was not just a year which marked the 60th anniversary of Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA). It was also the year in which it posted a number of records in the production, export and retail arenas. Thanks to a windfall export order during the course of the year, the Uitenhage-based facility surpassed its previous production record of 128 001 vehicles in 2006, to produce 137 758 Polo Vivo’s, Polo’s and Cross Polo’s in 2011. The exports were mostly of Polo’s to key right hand drive markets around the world as well as left hand drive units to Europe. In addition, Volkswagen Group South Africa is the sole producer of the Cross Polo to markets worldwide. These orders ensured another record for VWSA – that of 81 560 exports in 2011 over 2010’s total of 76 931. As a result of this windfall order, the Company’s exports grew by some 179% last year compared to 2009 (29 223).

“On the Brand side, Volkswagen of South Africa boasts the two top selling passenger vehicles in 2011 – Polo Vivo with 35 237 sales or 6.2% of the market and 24 504 Polo’s with 4.3% of the market,” said Mike Glendinning, VWSA Sales and Marketing Director. Thanks to the introduction of the Amarok 1-ton Double Cab in late 2010, followed by the 1-ton Single Cab last year, VW Commercial Vehicles recorded an increase in sales figures from 3 574 in 2010 to 9 497 last year – a growth rate of 62%. “We are pleased with the results we’ve achieved – particularly in the LCV market – thanks to the introduction of the Amarok. It is steadily gaining momentum, with the secondbiggest market share in the 1-ton Double Cab Pick-Up segment – of 14.3% in 2011,” said Glendinning.
These records came as VWSA celebrates its 60th year of existence in the country. To-date, 2 916 007 vehicles have rolled off the Company’s production lines since the first Beetle on 31 August 1951. “Our 60th year has truly been the best year for VWSA to-date. While we celebrated these and a number of other achievements during the course of the year, we also have to be mindful of the fact that 2012 will be much tougher, with expected lower exports and a slowing rate of growth in the local market,” said David Powels, VWSA Managing Director.
