nwoners van Huis Tevrede hier het Maandagoggend nog geskok in groepies gesit nadat hul kamers Sondagoggend oorstroom is. Van die ander het hand gegee met die opruim van modder en slik uit die kamers. Beddens en hangkaste het in die oorstroming omgeval en het vol modder, buite die kamers gestaan om in die flou sonnetjie droog te word. By een deur het ’n hoop nat, modderige skoene gelê.
Janita Pretorius, eienaar van Huis Tevrede, het vertel hoe dankbaar hulle was om drie inwoners se kunstande, wat hulle baie onlangs gekry het, asook ’n nuwe bril van ’n ander inwoner, tussen die modder te vind. Dié artikels het op die inwoners se bedkassies gelê toe die vloedwater die eiendom Sondagoggend omstreeks 02:00 getref het. “Ons is nog besig om deur die klere te sif om te kyk wat gered kan word. Ek is bevrees dat daar nie baie sal wees wat ons kan red nie. Baie selfone het ook in die slag gebly. ‘Niemand se geskiedenis moet afgebreek word nie’ LOURENS SCHOEMAN Opgerig ná die oorlog tussen Boer en Brit, verlede Donderdag verskroei deur die EFF en Maandag skoongeskrop deur die ANC. Die soldate-standbeeld op Uitenhage Markplein het sedert sy oprigting in 1904 nog nie soveel opslae gemaak as die afgelope paar dae nie. Christian Martin, ANC-LPW, het Maandag met skroplap in die hand die roet van die standbeeld help weg was. Hy het gesê geskiedenis vertel van waar ’n mens kom en wat gebeur het. “Daarom het ons besluit om die standbeeld skoon te maak. Die ANC moet die leiding
neem as die regerende party om te verseker dat elke kultuur se geskiedenis bewaar bly. “Foute van die verlede moet jou lewe verander om te voorkom dat dit weer gebeur. Niemand se geskiedenis moet afgebreek word om ’n ander s’n te bevoordeel nie.” Martin het verlede Dinsdag ’n oproep gedoen dat die standbeeld van Koningin Victoria voor die Baaise hoofbiblioteek vir een van die Khoisan-leier David Stuurman moet plek maak. Maandag het hy gesê mense wat apartheid en koloniale standbeelde wil beskadig moet liewer ’n bydrae lewer tot die geskiedenis as om af te breek en te vernietig. “Ons vier vanjaar die 60ste jaar van die Vryheidsmanifes wat duidelik beskryf Suid-Afri-
ka behoort aan almal wat daarin woon, wit, swart of bruin, ons almal hoort hier. Gert Steenkamp, opperhoof van die Khoisan, het blare van plante gebrand wat as reiniging moes dien vir die skade wat aan die soldate-standbeeld aangerig is. Twee jong seuns, Michael en Zander Kilian, het met die skoonmaakproses gehelp. Volgens hul pa, Pieter, was hy en sy seuns op pad om te gaan bal skop toe hulle met die verbygaan die skoonmaakproses opgemerk het. “Die seuns het dadelik gesê hulle wil gaan help, want hulle glo dis die regte ding om te doen,” het Kilian gesê. Ondanks die EFF se aanspraak dat hy agter die brand van die beeld sit, is niemand nog daarvoor in hegtenis geneem nie.

Daring inventiveness a boost to youth centre HEILIE COMBRINCK

nventiveness, dedicated individuals and the strong sense of financial survival with the ultimate aim to take care of vulnerable children, motivated Oosterland Youth Centre to enter the home industry and food services sector. When during December 2014 the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital advertised a tender for the outsourcing of its on-site coffee shop, it offered an ideal opportunity for Oosterland to expand their programme in the hospitality industry. “The reputation of Oosterland Opstal, a home industry and catering venture together with the need to expand our services to a broader community, was in our favour,” said Zulyka Scott, Fundraiser at Oosterland Youth Centre. The Centre is a non-profit organisation which qualifies as a child and youth care centre, a provision of the new Children’s Act to establish a system of specialised alternative childcare programmes with proper standards and governance structures. “Oosterland Opstal is one of our sustainability projects to generate funds in assisting the centre with projects empowering our children with positive life skills allowing them to take responsibility for their life and future,” said Riaan Marais, Director of Oosterland Youth Centre. The Oosterland Opstal outlets in Penford and at the hospital are managed by Adele Phillipson. It is well known for its extraordinary and appetising platters to suit any occasion or clients’ health preferences. Other popular meals include their lasagne and bobotie which are made to order. “It is pleasing to see that all walks of life are starting to visit our coffee shop. That is what we want for all, whether a patient, cleaner, professional or just someone who needs tranquillity to come and enjoy what we have to offer,” said Adele. The Oosterland Opstal at 13 Penford Avenue is still in operation, whilst the fully equipped kitchen facilities at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital grounds are utilized to provide a variety of eats, treats, platters, themed cakes and take-aways. “Oosterland Opstal is more than a business. HTS Daniel Pienaar vier 120ste jaar ere wat top poste beklee in die sakewêreld, nywerheid- en konstruksiebedrywe en in die akademie. Oudskolier van 2001, dr. Christie Dorfling, tans verbonde aan die Chemiesie Ingenieurwese Departement van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, hou steeds die rekord vir die hoogste punte in die RSA tydens sy studie vir die B.Ing Chemiese Ingenieurswese graad. Dewald Oosthuizen, adjunkhoofleier van 2012 en tans besig met die B.Ing Chemiese Ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, het die afgelope twee jaar die tekenning gekry as die beste ingenieursstudent aan die US.
Beginjare Die ontstaan van die Hoër Tegniese Skool Daniel Pienaar is te danke aan die opening van die destydse Uitenhage Ambagskool op 2 April 1895. Die armoede en min toekomsgeleenthede van Afrikanerseuns teen die einde van die 19de eeu was vir ds. Danie Pienaar ‘n groot bekommernis. Daarom het hy die ambagskool geopen om ‘n heenkome daar te stel waar Afrikanerseuns ‘n vaardigheid kon aanleer om selfonderhoudend te word. Die Uitenhage Ambagskool was die tweede skool van hierdie aard wat in die destydse Kaapkolonie geopen is. Die eerste een is in 1894 in Kaapstad geopen, maar kon nie die toets van tyd deurstaan nie en is in 1906 gesluit. Derhalwe is die HTS Daniel Pienaar, alhoewel nie die eerste een wat geopen is nie, die oudste bestaande tegniese skool in SuidAfrika. Die naam van die skool het oor die jare drie keer verander. Vir die eerste 50 jaar was dit die Ambagskool Uitenhage. In 1944 is die naam verander na die Hoër Tegniese Skool
Uitenhage en in 1956 het die skool die huidige naam, Hoër Tegniese skool Daniel Pienaar gekry. Die skool is vernoem na ds. Daniel Josua Pienaar. Die huidige skoolkampus is in 1975 betrek. Dus in 2015 word nie net die stigting van die skool 120 jaar gelede gehuldig en gevier nie - dit is ook die 40ste verjaarsdag van die huidige skoolkampus in Fairbridge Heights. Netelige begin Die eerste skoolgebou is in 1895 in Cuylerstraat langs die Swartkopsrivier geopen met ’n leerdertal van 30 seuns. Die getalle het vinnig gegroei en die twee slaapsale vir 45 seuns was vol. ‘n Deel van die wamakerswinkel is bedags as eetsaal en drie aande per week as klaskamer gebruik.
Die eerste skoolhoof (toe superintendent genoem) was was mnr. F. Döege en sy salaris was ongeveer R20 per maand. Huidige skoolkampus Die skoolgeboue in Laer Cuylerstraat was nie funksioneel nie en spasie het ‘n probleem geword nadat die leerdertal sterk gegroei het. Kort voor die betrekking van die huidige kampus in 1975, is gr. 8-leerders vanaf die begin van 1973 vir klasdoeleindes in ‘n gedeelte van die ou Queen Mary Hospitaalgeboue in Kanonheuwel. Op 1 Oktober 1975 het die amptelike opening van die nuwe skoolkampus in Fairbridge Heights plaasgevind. Oudskoliere Daniel Pienaar spog met verskeie oudskoli-

Op Saterdag, 26 April is daar ‘n kermis rondom die A-rugbyveld terwyl rugbywedstryde teen H/S Framesby plaasvind. Die reünie-naweek word afgesluit met ‘n kerkdiens in Uitenhage Moedergemeente op Sondag, 26 April om 09:00. Op 1 Mei 2015 vind die DP 120 Gholfdag by die Uitenhage Gholfklub plaas.

Choir to send out message of hope HEILIE COMBRINCK “It is not all about singing. As a choir we make an impact on our audiences through what and how we perform. We sing to send out a message of hope.” These are the words of Siphosihle Bosman, deputy chairperson of the Mary Mount Catholic High School choir, which since the beginning of the year has been under the baton of young choir conductor Rufus-Jayson MacLean. Currently a student at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Maclean was requested by Mary Mount’s Head of Department Susan Boyce to assist with the school choir. “Choirs are near to my heart. I did my training under the well-known Juanita van Dyk from NMMU and now would like to plough back what she has instilled in me,” said McLean. More than a hundred learners turned up for the auditions as the school does not have a lot of extramural activities. MacLean started the
Mary Mount with 28 talented young singers. “It is difficult to get the learners involved in the more disciplined Western feel of a choir. I am left with a smaller group, but they are immensely dedicated and talented.” Although just four months have elapsed since the inception of the choir, they already have a full schedule and recently performed at Rosa Munch Old Age Home as part of the choir’s Easter outreach programme. According to Aphiwe Citwa, chairperson of the choir, the performance at Rosa Munch was “a great idea as we do care a lot about our senior citizens.” Maclean said, “Singing is a talent that God blessed us with. We need to share it and make a difference right here in town. We want to give senior citizens hope and show them that there are people out there caring for them,” said MacLean. The Mary Mount choir’s next performance will be at Despatch high school on April 22nd and thereafter at the annual Voce Volente Festival which will be held at Westering High School early in May.

Dirtiest fun run reaches sell-out stage Nelson Mandela Bay’s dirtiest fun run, the Muck Run presented by the Edge Financial Group, has received overwhelming response this year with one of the three races already sold out and just a handful of entries still remaining. The Muck Run is a fun charity driven untimed 5km obstacle course established by non-profit events company Zports Events NPC which sees individual and team participants tackling over 10 obstacles through the 5km bush course including a 30m slip and slide, cattle dip, swamp crossing, zap trap and
mud crawl. Each year the event appeals to participants and spectators to donate unwanted clothing and their dirty race kit to charity with this year’s donations being collected for Khaya Cheshire in Walmer Township. The 5km run starts at 15:00 on Saturday, April 18th and another at 10:00 on Sunday, 19th whilst children 12 years and under, who are unsure of the 5km distance, have their own 2km obstacle course on the Saturday afternoon. Late entries at just R150 for the 5km and R100 for the kids race are
available online on www.muckrun.co.za. Participants are encouraged to dress up for the event with awesome prizes from Woodlands Dairy for the best dressed individual and teams over the weekend. Collection of race packs will be at the Wellness Hub at 2 Ascot Road (cnr Conyngham Road and Ascot Road) on Thursday 16th between 11:00 and 18:00. )The Muck Run is hosted at Bushpig Adventures off Lakeside Road Seaview. NCEBA DLADLA Nelson Mandela Bay will witness a major boxing tournament for the first time in years when Mbulelo Mfama of KwaNobuhle presents Two International and an equal number of South African National Championship bouts on the same bill at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre on 26 April. Mfama’s Nyusa Boxing Promotions which also takes boxing back to the venue made popular by the great Vuyani Nene and Phumzile Madikane among others, the Indoor Sports Centre, will be upgraded from the development boxing promotions. Mfama joins the big league of the calibre of Ayanda Matiti’s Xaba Boxing Promotions, Siphatho Handi’s Mamali Boxing Promotions and even Mzimasi Mnguni’s Eyethu Boxing Promotions when he takes local pugilists a step up the ladder, which could be the proverbial lion’s dens, to some. Uitenhage’s Unathi Jacobs will challenge Gauteng’s Deon Coetzee’s SA Cruiserweight title in a fight that will see the duo also battling for the ownership of the vacant WBF Africa Championship over 12 rounds in the
main attraction. In the main supporting bout, Grahamstown’s Mziwoxolo Ndwayana, the Eastern Cape Welterweight titlist who is rated sixth in South Africa will exchange blows with PE’s boxing sensation and third ranked in SA, Anelisa Gungqisa, over 12 rounds. This will be for the vacant WBF Africa Welterweight title. In a fight that will hopefully steal the limelight, female boxer Nomampondomise Xotyeni, the only SA champion in the metro, will defend her title against Cape Town’s Bongiswa Silo in what is going to be their third meeting. While Xotyeni won the three outfits outright, the most improved Silo believes she is going to be third-time-lucky. Their fight will be over 10 rounds. KwaNobuhle’s Makhosonke Zwengu will square off with DRC-born South African Super-middleweight champion Balimo Weliya of East London for the latter’s championship belt over over 12 rounds. An upbeat Mfama said there would be four more exciting bouts to finish off his exciting bill. )Admission will be R120.
