Game 21
UCSanDiego Softball
TRITONS SNAG SERIES WIN IN SAN FRAN The UC San Diego softball team broke a scoreless tie with nine runs in its final turn at the plate Saturday, ultimately capturing a series win on the road over San Francisco State. Junior All-American Kris Lesovsky capped off the clinching rally with a three-run shot over the leftfield fence, her second homerun of 2010. SFSU’s Ashley Jackson outdueled Camille Gaito with a two-hitter during Saturday’s first game, in which the Gators grabbed a 3-1 victory. Despite scoring just one run through the first 13 innings of the day, the Tritons’ offense awoke for nine scores in the top of the seventh during game two. UCSD senior Christine Zankich, the beneficiary of the late-arriving run support, held off the SFSU attack in the bottom half of the inning as the Tritons secured a 9-2 victory. GRANATH BAFFLES GATORS ON FRIDAY The second half of Friday’s doubleheader began with a leadoff homerun from Lesovsky and UCSD carried the momentum to the final out, which brought a 3-1 result in favor of the Tritons. The job of holding off the Gators’ bats in game two fell on reliever Tess Granath, who entered Friday with 2.1 innings pitched in 2010. Granath hurled a gem, going the final 4.2 innings without allowing a hit. The Santa Rosa native struck out a career-high seven hitters, half of the outs she recorded Friday. SCOUTING THE RED STORM OF DSC After its Hawaii trip was cut short because of a tsunami warning, Dixie State resumes play this week in La Jolla facing the Tritons. The Red Storm has gotten off to a strong start this year, holding a 7-4 overall record while going 4-2 in Pacific West Conference play. DSC is currently receiving votes just outside the Top 25 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). SCOUTING THE WARRIORS OF STANISLAUS With All-Region honorees Meghan Franksen and Jessica Gaumnitz graduated, the Warriors’ roster seems to be in rebuilding mode this season as CSUS holds an early record of 3-14-1 overall and 1-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. A bright spot for the Warriors has been shortstop Sarah Locarnini, who is batting .414 out of the leadoff spot. UCSD and CSUS have met 56 times in history, with the Tritons winning 29 of those contests.
