TURLOCK RAIN SHORTENS INVITATIONAL The UC San Diego softball team (1-1) could only manage two games out of its scheduled six at this past weekend’s Best of the West Invitational, after rainy weather forced the cancellation of the tournament’s final two days. GAITO STARS ON OPENING DAY The Tritons walked away from 2010 opening day with a 1-1 record, after close games with Central Washington and Chico State on Friday during the only day of the Best of the West Invitational. In a season-opening 2-0 win against CWU, sophomore Camille Gaito threw seven shutout innings in a dazzling pitching performance. She allowed just three hits and struck out six Wildcat hitters, one short of tying her career high. Last season, Gaito was named to the Daktronics Division II All-West Region Second Team after compiling a 12-5 record coupled with an earned run average of 1.86. In the second game of the invitational, UCSD took on CCAA foe Chico State. After the Tritons swept the season series of five games in 2009, CSUC got back on the winning path Friday with a 3-2 victory in extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Wildcats took a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly from Reina Andreatta that scored Courtney Brock. The Tritons had a chance in their final at-bat with freshman Katie Belanger standing on third with one out but two UCSD hitters failed to bring her in. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS OF CHICO STATE After Chico State squeezed past UCSD in extra innings last Friday, 3-2, the Wildcats won another close contest when they topped San Francisco State 4-2. The CSUC offense has gotten off to a strong start, hitting .340 collectively, while starting pitchers Kacie McCarthy and Jessica McDermott threw a combined 15 innings at the Best of the West Invitational with a 1.87 earned run average. In the all-time series between UCSD and CSUC, the Tritons hold a 25-14 advantage. Before Friday’s win for the Wildcats, UCSD had won the previous five meetings, all coming in 2009. In the sweep of last year’s season series, the Tritons outscored the Wildcats a combined 21-8.
