EVENT PROGRAM C MEd
Your guide to maximize your experience at the Compassion in Medical Education (C-MEd) Forum and learn how to integrate empathy and compassion programs and curricula at your institution

July 8 - 9, 2024La Jolla, CA

Welcome to C-MEd! On behalf of the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion, we welcome you to San Diego and thank you for allowing us to serve as your host over the next two days.
At the Sanford Institute, we are united around a singular purpose: to spark empathy-driven change in medical education and healthcare across our nation and world. We believe the time for this change is now, and it is our sincere hope that you will join in our endeavor to achieve this goal.
Our current medical system creates a distressing work environment for providers and trainees, harming their physical, psychological, and emotional well-being. The decline in empathy in medical students documented during the course of their education results, in part, from stresses inherent in their exposure to the rigorous training that supports becoming a physician. Moreover, for the first time in their lives, they experience the burdens of caring for the sick. Innovations in medical education that recognize these stressors and provide ways of learning to sustain students’ ability to engage in empathy and compassion are vital for the future of physicians and those they serve.
Together, we can address these challenges. At C-MEd, you are among medical educators, providers, and leaders to pursue more compassionate medical education and healthcare systems. You understand the hard work it takes to embed empathy into the foundation of a school of medicine or teaching hospital, and your presence here shows us how committed you are to making it happen. C-MEd exists to help not only make your efforts a success, but an absolute triumph.
This week, we mark the start of a movement to equip each medical learner and health caregiver with the education and training required to engage patients as whole people with physical and emotional needs. We will combat clinician burnout and create new ways in which healthcare education and systems can understand providers’ needs to transform medicine. We hope your time with us is meaningful, and that you walk away from C-MEd eager to partner in implementing empathy and compassion curricula. Thank you for being here.

OUR VISION
A transformation of medical education in which an emphasis on skill learning and competence in empathy and compassion parallels that of scientific and technical skills.
Catalyzed by Denny Sanford’s vision and generosity, the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion at UC San Diego was founded with a generous donation in 2019.
The Sanford Institute represents an unprecedented blending of two parallel themes:
Employing the unyielding rigor and tools of science to establish the neurological basis for empathy in the brain to identify the mechanisms that transform compassion into behavior; and, 1.
Experimenting with and developing new ways to teach and instill empathy and compassion in medical students and practicing clinicians alike. 2.
