Asian American Writers Visit UCSC Campus UCSC Living Writers Reading Series brings in acclaimed writers for reading and Q&A session By Theresa Chan The UCSC Living Writers Reading Series presents the Asian American Writers Series. This series was organized by Karen Tei Yamashita, author and Associate Professor of Literature/Creative Writing at UCSC. The target of the series is to “honor the writing of Asian American writers and give access to their work and professional presence to our students, faculty and local Santa Cruz community.” The first event in the series took place on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 featuring writer Justin Chin. Chin read from his latest collection of poetry, Gutted, “a document of growing older - a massively moving work of grief, loss, comfort, illness, and resolve-imbued with Chin’s unique screwy perspective, ever-defective grace, and scabrous humor.” The second author featured Alvin Lu on Tuesday, October 16, 2007. Lu discussed his debut novel, The Hell Screens, a chilling story following “a man whose search for accounts of ghosts and spirits, leading him through images from modern and colonial Taiwan - an island of restless spirits.” The last literary reading will feature Jeffery Paul Chan, author of Eat Everything Before You Die: A Chinaman in the Counterculture, “an ironic commentary on the identities the children of Chinese American immigrants concoct from their questionable histories, cultural practices, and survival strategies.” This event will be on

Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the Humanities Lecture Hall 206 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. The series thus far, has been fun, informative, humorous, intriguing. Both the Justin Chin and Alvin Lu readings were held at the Humanities Lecture Hall, nearly packed with creative writing and literature students, staff, faculty members, and other interested students. Selected excerpts from each of their books followed with lively and stimulating question and answer sessions. Despite reading from dramatic works, each of the authors had somehow made each event light-hearted, and entertaining. No question was denied and each was answered whole-heartedly from these strong Asian American authors. The Living Writers Series has been quite a success and a great way to bring the community together. It has allowed the Asian American/Pacific Islander community to come together with students of the creative writing and literature departments to find their

Jeffery Paul Chan common interest of the appeal of talented authors who happen to of the Asian American/Pacific Islander community. This series is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program, Literature Department, Porter College George Hitchcock Poetry Fund, Institute for Humanities Research, and the Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center.
