By JENNIFER DAVIES

Knowledge is POWER In a fast changing world, Larry Smarr is using computer science to make sense of it all.

As the saying goes, inquiring minds want to know, and there is perhaps no more an inquiring mind than Larry Smarr’s. The founding director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), Smarr has spent a lifetime exploring everything from black holes to bacteria in our guts and then developing computational methods to explain these mind-bending phenomena. His pursuits have led to some pretty idiosyncratic endeavors. To explore how complex ecosystems work, Smarr once built a 200-gallon coral reef tank in his living room. Twenty years later he is exploring the dynamic ecosystem of his own human body, monitoring it by collecting and evaluating his blood and stool samples on a regular basis. Yes, he’s inquiring—and dedicated. Smarr’s inquiries have taken many forms and ventured down myriad avenues, but his intellectual quests started at a very young age. 8

Fall 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

“I always knew I was going to be a scientist from the first grade because that was what I was interested in,” he said, recalling how all his classmates would look to him for help on science projects such as constructing a model of the solar system. “Whether it was a natural interest or a natural aptitude, it’s hard to say,” he added. Smarr’s parents, who ran a florist shop in Columbia, Mo. were “supportive but a bit mystified.” “There was never any reason about what I would study,” he said. “I would stumble on something, and I’d think ‘I can do that.’ I’d learn about it, study it and then move onto something else.” As a teenager living in a college town, with University of Missouri close by, Smarr had easy access to the university’s library and was already taking calculus classes at the college by his junior year of high school. When it came time to graduate, he received both a master’s

degree and a bachelor of arts in physics—a point of pride for Smarr, especially when it came to his undergraduate degree. “I was one of the first physics students to be allowed to earn a bachelor of arts and not a bachelor of science because I wanted to have more electives,” he said. From there, Smarr received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Texas using supercomputers to try to understand “dynamic, nonlinear coupled systems” from the astrophysics of giant galactic radio jets to the collision of black holes. But in studying those systems, he realized that many other scientists could use supercomputing power to unlock a vast array of mysteries: from particle physics to living organisms to the universe. So Smarr worked with his colleagues to create the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, where he was a professor.

It was love of cross-disciplinary research that brought Smarr to UC San Diego in 2000 to help found and then serve as the director of Calit2, a UC San Diego/UC Irvine partnership. He also holds the Harry E. Gruber professorship in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering. In these roles, Smarr used Calit2 to organize interdisciplinary teams to study the digital disruption of health, energy, the environment, and culture. He oversaw building leading-edge information infrastructure from supernetworks to virtual reality and scientific visualization—which is the ability to make scientific findings more understandable through scalable interactive visual formats. Through his work in these various fields, it became clear to Smarr that he and other researchers needed a new “big data” cyberinfrastructure. Because of that he has taken the lead in creating the Pacific Research Platform, a high-powered “information superhighway” dedicated to research and education, interconnecting West Coast universities. The Pacific Research Platform is expected to give participating universities and other research institutions the ability to move data 1,000 times faster compared to speeds on today’s inter-campus shared internet—something that is vitally important to be able to make sense of the increasing amounts of data and information that scientists and others must analyze. Take, for instance, the study of microbiomes, which are the large and varied collections of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that live both within and around us. Although it is a massive area of study, Smarr has tackled the subject, in part, by using a very personal approach. For the past several years, Smarr has obsessively monitored his own body—with regular analysis of his blood and stool samples—to better understand the complex ecosystem that is the human body. Smarr calls this effort the “quantified self”—an endeavor that he believes will form the basis for future personalized precision medicine.

While studying his own bodily functions might seem routine, Smarr said it actually requires a large amount of computing power. The data generated by the genomic analysis of a single stool sample, for instance, is about 35 gigabytes of data—or about 5,000 times larger than a digital photo you take on your smartphone. To computationally analyze the dynamics of his microbiome over four years while comparing it to hundreds of other people’s microbiomes, both healthy and sick, he and his colleague Rob Knight, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego with an additional appointment in the university’s Department of Computer

“ Change is never going to stop—it’s just going to accelerate.” Science, are currently burning through one million core-hours of supercomputer time on the San Diego Supercomputer Center. That is equivalent to running a laptop for over 100 years. While Smarr and Knight have been on the forefront of computational microbiome research, many other groups are undertaking similarly large projects. In response, the White House announced a new National Microbiome Initiative in May to foster the integrated study of microbiomes across different ecosystems, with Knight and other UC San Diego scientists in attendance for the announcement. “This is now ‘The Next Big Thing.’ The study of microbiomes has tremendous potential to provide insights into health, diseases, and agricultural and environmental sustainability,” Smarr said.

Still, Smarr marvels at the speed with which microbiome research has grown. Just ten years ago, the world of microbiomes was relatively unknown with the research focusing on environmental microbiomes such as those J. Craig Venter studied across the planet’s oceans. “You recognize how quickly it all moves from basic research to a White House initiative,” Smarr said. “Every time I live through one of these transformations, it takes my breath away how fast innovation can move from the first germ of an idea.” But unlike many who view innovation’s dizzying pace as a threat or a cause for concern, Smarr sees it as hopeful sign. “It makes me optimistic, considering

Presentation made possible by software designer Philip Weber.

the whole planet is facing a series of steep challenges,” he said. Those challenges and the persistent race to face them will require everyone—not just scientists and researchers—to keep pace with change. Because of that, Smarr said, San Diego is fortunate to have UC San Diego Extension and other continuing education institutions that are dedicated to helping people reskill and upskill. “With the Extension program, San Diegans have the opportunity to participate and retrain themselves to better work in the future that is coming,” he said. “My father spent his whole life in one job,” Smarr added. “Those days are gone forever. In a city as vibrant as San Diego, its citizens must be able to adapt. Change is never going to stop—it’s just going to accelerate.” n

Frothy Brew Inside San Diego’s Craft Beer Industry

Ed O’Sullivan O’Sullivan Bros. Brewing Co.

By ALEX ROTH If you’d predicted a decade ago that San Diego County might soon have more than 100 craft breweries, someone would have accused you of drinking one too many grapefruit-and-citra IPAs. In San Diego, like most everywhere else, making craft beer used to be mainly the hobby of people who kept small homebrew kits in their basements and enjoyed swapping recipes online. Today, however, San Diego has become one of the world’s leading players in the multibillion-dollar craft beer industry. And Ed O’Sullivan is uniquely qualified to lecture about the challenges facing anyone looking to get into the business. O’Sullivan is a guest speaker in UC San Diego Extension’s Professional Certificate in Brewing. He also is one of the founders and owners of O’Sullivan Bros. Brewing Co. in Scripps Ranch.

10

Fall 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

As it happens, he and his brothers built their brewery while he was a student in the exact same UC San Diego Extension program where he now lectures. “When I went to class, I was pretty much sitting in the front row asking questions about what I was going to be working on in the brewery the next day,” he said. “I was probably a pest with questions, but I was highly motivated.” The industry has only grown and the competition has increased in the one and a half years since the O’Sullivans first opened their tasting room and began the arduous task of getting the right people to notice their beers. Theirs was the ninety-sixth craft brewery in the county. Now, there are more than 125, all of them churning out exotic brews with names such as Farmhouse Noir, Daniel Boone Imperial Oatmeal Stout, and Freudian Sip Strong Ale. If you want a beer flavored with cinnamon, or watermelon, or chipotle peppers, or chocolate, or even peanut butter,

you can find it on tap somewhere in the San Diego region. O’Sullivan can talk at length about all the things a brewer must do to succeed in this environment. He has opinions about what equipment to buy, how big to make your tasting room, and the critical importance of making sure the next batch of a particular type of beer tastes exactly the same as the previous batch. Given the level of competition, it is sometimes the smallest detail that can determine whether a business thrives. “There are so many choices for the consumer,” he said. “All they want to do is to go to a brand new brewery they’ve never been to before. And you can do that on 128 consecutive weekends now in San Diego. That’s a long time.” O’Sullivan has lived in San Diego since 1975 and was a successful businessman long before he decided to get into the craftbrew game.

He graduated in 1980 from UC San Diego with a degree in molecular biology, worked for many years in the tech industry, and eventually became the owner of two businesses: CFO Connect and Business Books, both of which provide consulting services to small biotech companies. He still owns both. A few years ago, he and four of his brothers decided to open a brewery. On the O’Sullivan Bros. Brewing Co. website, they explain their decision this way: “What if we combined our Irish heritage and California creativity to create a really tasty brown porter, or a clever stout made with a wide variety of yeast strains, hop selection, and malted barleys now available? Sounds good! Let’s do it.” And so O’Sullivan enrolled in Extension’s Professional Certificate in Brewing. His professional and financial successes gave him the flexibility to pursue the new venture without the need for instant profits. That was fortunate because the brewery still operates at roughly the breakeven point, at least for now. “It’s not making anybody rich,” he said of his own business. The beer, however, has been a success. This year, the brothers’ Catholic Guilt smoked porter won a bronze medal at the San Diego International Beer Festival, the largest such festival on the West Coast. A year earlier, the brewery won two silver medals at the same festival. Unlike many other craft breweries, O’Sullivan Bros. doesn’t use any fruits, vegetables, or spices for any of its brews. Instead it concentrates on the four fundamentals: malt, hops, yeast (it propagates its own, using five different strains), and water (it takes tap water and treats it to certain specifications using special equipment and recipes). The brewery specializes in dark beers as opposed to many other San Diego breweries that focus more on West Coast IPAs. The high quality of the product has been an essential part of the business model. “There are a lot of craft beer bars in San Diego that are screening you,” O’Sullivan said. “Our first year was just developing street cred. So we got on tap at Hamilton’s. We got on tap at Urge Gastropub. At Barrel Republic. At Regents Pizzeria. People that really pay attention to craft beer, that know craft beer. Those are the guys that give you street cred.”

Ed recommends... It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of quality craft beers in the city known as “the Craft Beer Capital of America.” O’Sullivan shares some recommendations for his brews and other local brewers, too. These days, you can find their beers at roughly 80 bars and restaurants in San Diego County. The brewery sells the beer in kegs but is hard at work on the next phase of its business: selling it in bottles, too. “Bottling is another level of complexity: permitting, power, equipment,” O’Sullivan said. Like all the other local craft breweries, O’Sullivan Bros. also faces a new challenge: competition from the enormous “macrobrewers,” such as Anheuser-Busch InBev, which are making an aggressive move into the microbrew industry. “They have unlimited funds to do what they want,” O’Sullivan said. “I only have x number of dollars. It gets a little more difficult for the small brewers every year to compete.” He discusses the fundamentals of launching a craft beer business to around 30 students as guest lecturer in a class titled, appropriately, “The Brewery Start-Up.” Despite the challenges, many students seem undaunted. “What’s nice is you’ve got a bunch of very interested people wanting to hear about your experience,” O’Sullivan said. “A lot of them have that little dream of building a brewery of their own.” n

Warm days O’Sullivan Bros. Sailhead Murphy Pale Ale: A dry, crisp ale with “citrus and grapefruit floral notes.” O’Sullivan Bros. Tooraloo Bohemian Pilsner: A light and clean lager—a rarity in San Diego’s ale-focused craft beer scene—that is designed to refresh.

Cool evenings O’Sullivan Bros. Catholic Guilt Smoked Porter: Made with cherry wood smoked malt, this rich porter also has hints of dark chocolate. O’Sullivan Bros. Our Father’s Stout: A dark, sweet, full bodied, slightly roasted ale that can suggest coffee and cream or sweetened espresso.

Other options Karl Strauss’ Mosaic Session IPA: O’Sullivan, who likes his beer “clean and refreshing,” calls this one of his favorites. Alpine Beer Company’s Nelson Golden Rye IPA: This is another go-to brew for O’Sullivan, which uses a unique hop from New Zealand called the Nelson Sauvin. HUMAN NATURE

Jennifer Tabanico, president Action Research

Using Psychology to Save the Planet By ALEX ROTH

12

Jennifer Tabanico makes her living trying to change people’s habits and behavior. Her job requires a journalist’s investigative skills, an advertiser’s marketing talents, and a psychologist’s understanding of why people do what they do. One day she might be helping the city of Oceanside coaxROTH residents into picking By ALEX up after their dogs. The next she might be working with the city of Fort Worth, Texas, to improve its residents’ recycling habits. Tabanico, 39, who will teach a new online course this fall at UC San Diego Extension, has been very successful very quickly. Her company, Action Research, which began as a small operation in North San Diego County, now has clients all over the country as well as a few in other parts of the world, and it recently opened a second office in New York. Virtually all of her company’s clients, she said, want to change behavior in a way that helps the environment or public health and safety. She, too, is committed to the cause. Changing people’s basic habits, she believes,

Summer 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

is essential for the planet’s long-term health. Her company’s stated mission is “changing behavior for the public good” by promoting “clean, healthy, and sustainable communities.” “When you look at any environmental problem or even a lot of our health problems, you can really drill that down to individual behaviors,” she said. “At the end of the day, you’re really looking at individual decisions and choices.” The key, of course, is figuring out the most effective way to sway your target audience. “It’s more than just educating people, and it’s more than just getting people to care about something,” she said. “It’s really addressing the underlying motivations that people have.” Tabanico’s new nine-week course will be called Behavior Change Strategies for Sustainability, one of four courses taught as part of Extension’s Sustainability & Behavior Change certificate. She’ll be teaching all the tactics required to succeed in this line of work, such as

identifying and overcoming whatever obstacles might prevent a person from modifying his or her habits. When it comes to, say, reducing water use, people might simply have a hard time remembering what days to water lawns and for how long. Or they simply might not care enough to change their ways. How do you figure out which of these is the main obstacle? And how do you proceed from there? Tabanico hadn’t originally intended to embark on this career path. She thought she might go to medical school and become a doctor. But as an undergraduate and then master’s student at California State University San Marcos, she studied under Wesley Schultz, a social psychology professor. It was during this time she started learning about community-based social marketing, “which is applying insights from psychology to motivate people to engage in (certain) behavior,” she said. “I kind of fell in love with that process as a graduate student. It really felt like I was making a difference.”

Meanwhile, Schultz, began doing some consulting work in the field. He formed Action Research, and Tabanico began helping him. The purpose of the company, she said, was to “link research from academics to the real world—program planners that are trying to engage communities or workplaces in behaviors that benefit the environment.” In 2007, they hired staff and started building the company. She took over partial ownership in 2009 and complete ownership in 2015. Today, the company continues to grow at a rapid pace. She and her staff are working on 24 projects around the country as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. One recent client was the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, which oversees a variety of clean-

Tips for a Sustainable Future Jennifer Tabanico’s business helps clients “promote behaviors that contribute to clean, healthy, and sustainable communities.” Here are a few simple tips for living in a more eco-friendly way by reducing your energy use:

1. Turn off and/or unplug appliances. Especially in a work place, people often leave their computers turned on, which uses electricity. Even when turned off, computers might still use electricity unless unplugged. Most convenient thing to do is to plug the computer and monitor into a power strip, then turn off the strip at end of work day.

2. Get a professional to audit the energy use at your home or business. These professionals often have good tips for ways to reduce energy use.

3. Lower the temperature for your hot water heater. You can save a surprising

amount of energy by using cooler water for showers, laundry, and dishwashing.

4. Change your HVAC air filters on a regular basis. Your HVAC unit will use less energy.

5. Dry your laundry on a line. It might seem or look old fashioned, but it can reduce both your energy bill and your carbon footprint.

energy programs. The agency was looking to convince residents of one particular building to cut back on their energy use. The problem: these residents had no financial incentive to do so because their rent covered their electricity usage. Tabanico and her partners on the project began interviewing the tenants and giving them information about how much energy their neighbors were using. The idea was to motivate the tenants by using the “normative social influence” approach—in other words, using their neighbors’ behavior to convince them to change their own behavior. The tactic worked. The building saw a marked decrease in energy use. “A large body of research suggests that people look to others to determine their own behavior,” she said. “It’s been demonstrated time and time again that people tend to go along with the group. Whatever the majority of people are doing, people tend to fall in line.” Tabanico also has written articles for a variety of technical publications, including the Journal of Environmental Psychology, BioCycle magazine, and the journal Social Influence. When she’s not working, she might be kayaking, skydiving, or running an obstacle race. She lives in Oceanside with her eightyear-old son, who has been helping her clean up beaches since he was three. She has worked on numerous local environmental issues since moving to the North San Diego County area in 1997. “That’s where my heart has always been on a lot of the pollution-prevention work,” she said. “You can really see the local impact. That’s what I find very rewarding. I feel like I’m making a real impact.” n For more information about our Sustainability and Behavior Change certificate, visit extension.ucsd.edu/sustainablebehavior Fall 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

Fall 2016 | extension.ucsd.edu | (858) 534-3400

By JENNIFER DAVIES John Crary found out about the importance of safety early in his military career. As a new Navy recruit, Crary was part of the Seabee Battalion, which is tasked with construction projects all over the world. One of his first assignments was working on a fivestory building in Spain. Unfortunately, Crary didn’t know how to secure the safety harness properly, and he decided to wing it. It almost cost him his life—he nearly fell off the building. “Luck just had it that I didn’t go over,” Crary said. He certainly learned his lesson, and as he went all over the world—from Japan to Thailand to Africa to Afghanistan—building structures both large and small, Crary took a special interest in safety, even receiving an award for his efforts. But after 11 years of service, Crary left the Navy, though not of his choice. “I didn’t want to get out, but I was downsized,” he said. “It’s unfortunate but that’s life, I guess.” Crary, who grew up in Dexter, New York, a small town near the border of Canada, found that his years of experience in construction and safety didn’t necessarily impress potential employers in the civilian world. “I can’t tell you how many rejection letters I got,” he said. “It was disheartening. It was sickening.” Crary knew he wanted to be a safety specialist, but he also knew he needed another way to convince employers he was qualified to do the job. That’s when he decided to pursue UC San Diego Extension’s Safety Specialist certificate, which is part of its Occupational Safety and Health Department. The three-month program offers in-class education with hands-on skills practice and is designed to provide the training and certification for graduates to work as field safety supervisors, safety specialists, and occupational and safety specialists. It also includes an unpaid internship to give participants real-world connections and real-life practice. Crary said the program was key in helping him on his way to a successful career in safety.

“It gives the credentials that employers are looking for,” Crary said. “It gives you status. I hate to say a piece of paper can do something, but it can.” In addition, the program’s internship led to a full-time job as a safety manager for Helix Electrical, a construction and engineering firm with seven offices throughout the country.

he loves his job because it allows him to help others and feel the camaraderie he had in the Navy. “It grows from my desire to take care of people,” he said. “As a safety professional, you are that first line of defense. If they don’t know what to look for, they don’t know how to keep themselves safe. Vice versa, the

“ As a safety professional, you are that first line of defense. If they don’t know what to look for, they don’t know how to keep themselves safe.”

David Watts, vice president and director of safety at Helix, said Crary has both the experience and the work ethic to succeed, which he attributes to Crary’s military background. “John and I share a common background with both of us serving in the Navy,” Watts said. “That definitely earned credibility points with me. It was a big plus.” Watts also has insight into how hard it can be for veterans to make the transition from the military to civilian life. “I know I struggled with it,” Watts recalled. “I worked as a laborer and spent another five years paying my dues. It’s a cultural shock, and you have to adapt.” Crary, who now works as a safety officer for Cyber Professional Solutions Corp., said

people I work with teach me something new every day.” Crary, who was one of the first graduates of the new Safety Specialist certificate, said he would recommend the program to other veterans because it provides the knowledge and credentials today’s employers want. He said it has been instrumental in helping him create a life after the military. “There are two things that have gotten me where I am today,” he said. “UC San Diego Extension is one and my fiancée is the other. Without those two things, I don’t know where I’d be.” n For more information about our Safety Specialist certificate, visit osha.ucsd.edu.

Research Roundup

The Latest Data on the Economy, Jobs, and Education

By JENNIFER DAVIES UC San Diego Extension’s mission depends on its ability to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring people have the training they need and that companies have the talent the global economy demands. Information—data-driven, evidencebased information—is critical to this mission. Because of that fact, Extension conducts a wide range of research projects through its Center for Research on the Regional Economy, partnering with a variety of organizations to help get a better understanding not only of the lay of the land, but also what’s beyond the horizon. “We are not just in the continuingeducation business,” noted Mary Walshok, dean of UC San Diego Extension. “We are in the information business. We gather and analyze information because it can empower people and help us better address 16

problems, especially when it comes to the economy, education, and the workforce.” Here is some of what Extension’s recent research has revealed about San Diego’s urban core, high growth jobs, and how education is the intersection of opportunity and innovation.

Innovation’s Next Frontier Extension’s Center for Research on the Regional Economy, in collaboration with the Downtown San Diego Partnership, recently released the first-of-its-kind demographic study on San Diego’s urban core. The study revealed there is a growing and diverse innovation ecosystem in downtown, with more than 110 tech start-ups and a growing number of millennial residents and workers. In fact, downtown San Diego’s tech scene mirrors national trends as more

millennials—especially those in tech and creative fields—are seeking to be in urban environments that offer a 24-7 lifestyle and an unparalleled quality of life. Of the 34,550 people living in downtown San Diego, millennials are the largest demographic group, making up a third of the population. In addition, those who live downtown are among the most highly educated in San Diego County, with more than half holding college degrees. The average salary for downtown residents is around $73,000—far higher than the regional average. The study demonstrated that downtown is able to attract innovative companies and millennial talent because it offers the urban experiences and types of social connections so many young people are seeking. For instance, downtown is a

“walker’s paradise,” with almost 19 percent of all downtown residents walking to work. This walkability also makes it easy to access all the amenities the urban core has to offer, including more than 90 cultural institutions, 20 parks, and more than 200 happy hours.

and Burning Glass—identified the top ten occupations that combined the highest projected growth rates and the most online job postings. Researchers focused on careers that required bachelor’s degrees and less than five years of work experience. According to the analysis, the top 10 emerging careers for college graduates in 2016 are: 1. Software developers, applications 2. Accountants and auditors

“What we suspect is that there are a few places in the country that are harbingers not just in what is to come in science and technology, but also in how to assure that the talent pool has the skills it needs,” she said. In research-rich regions such as Boston, Silicon Valley, Seattle, and San Diego, new technologies are absorbed into the culture and the workforce at a much quicker pace than in many other cities, Walshok said. “If you are in a place where you are

3. Computer systems analysts 4. Medical and health service managers 5. Sales representatives, wholesale and manufacturing, technical and scientific products 6. Management analysts 7. Market research analysts and marketing specialists 8. Financial analysts 9. Information security analysts 10. Civil engineers Walshok said the report demonstrated a college degree is no longer enough, and that there is a need for specialized training because innovation is continuously reshaping the job market and the economy. “In almost every emerging career, whether it be health care or marketing or financial analysis, it became clear that you have to use technology to provide new insights,” Walshok said. “It is equally clear that the pace of change will require people to learn and adapt to new technological advances throughout their careers.”

bombarded with all those new technologies, companies and their employees are able to adapt—and adapt more quickly,” she said. “From this research-in-progress, we are beginning to see what kind of education and what kind of training need to be developed for regions to remain competitive.” Walshok said this research is vitally important because workforce training is the cornerstone of a prosperous economy, and it is clear that research universities, not just community colleges, play a pivotal role in these efforts. “Education is a tool and it is a means to deliver opportunity,” Walshok said. “Our research is informing where people want to live and work, how they want to learn, and what skills they need.” n

Emerging Careers

Education: The Intersection of Opportunity and Innovation

When it comes to choosing a career, everyone is searching for a field that has a promising present and an even brighter future. To help individuals identify these opportunities, Extension recently released its Emerging Careers for 2016 report, which details the most in-demand jobs with the highest growth potential in San Diego and nationally. To compile the list, the Center for Research on the Regional Economy— using data from labor-market firms Emsi

Because of the speed at which innovation is requiring companies and employees to constantly remake themselves, Extension is also involved in a nationwide research project that looks at different regions and how effective their workforce training and education systems are at keeping pace with technological change. Walshok said the preliminary results indicate that certain regions are better prepared than others to respond to the everchanging demands of the global economy.

The UC San Diego Extension Business Management Certificate with a concentration in Marketing helped me gain the knowledge necessary to start my own business. UC San Diego Extension gave me the confidence I needed in order to gain a competitive advantage as a professional. The instructors in the Business Management Certificate program had an even higher level of dedication, knowledge, and experience than some of the teachers I had during my master’s degree program. I also enjoyed my internship, where I met and networked with many business people from around San Diego. I have applied for OPT and plan to work in the U.S. for a while before starting my own business.

Share Your Story Carol Cottone-Kolthoff, MFA, BFA Art Instructor, UC San Diego Extension My name is Carol Cottone-Kolthoff and I am an artist. I’m also a drawing and painting instructor with UC San Diego Extension. I have been teaching art for 30 years, 10 of them at Extension, and I honestly have to say that I love teaching classes for UC San Diego Extension! The reason is my fantastic students. UC San Diego Extension attracts students who want to really learn and better their lives with art. The majority of my students have college degrees and are working in professions outside of art. Most come to art to balance their lives and to move out of the left-brained world that they work in day-to-day. Some had to put their art on hold to raise a family, and finally get a chance to enjoy art when their kids get older, or they retire. A few of my students are pursuing certificates, or even college degrees in art. And no matter what reasons students have for taking my classes, they all have a strong desire to learn, grow, and enrich their lives. They are highly motivated to continue improving their skills. As an art teacher, that kind of attitude makes for the best students in the world. By being great students, they encourage me to be a better artist and art teacher.

STEAM (Grades 5–12)

Test Prep (High School +)

Transfer Credit (Grades 11–12)

STEM is about science, technology, engineering, and math. Adding art to this equation, STEM is transformed to STEAM, which is about using both sides of the brain for a well-rounded education. We recently added Sally Ride Science @UC San Diego and the STEAM Channel to our program lineup.

Students can prepare year-round for the ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, and MCAT. Our Test Prep sessions provide the highest quality training without the high cost. They are available at UC San Diego and can also be customized and delivered on-site for your school or organization.

We now offer lower division transfer credit courses, including, but not limited to math, biology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, and marine biology to qualified high school juniors and seniors. Transfer credit courses are equivalent to regular UC San Diego undergraduate courses and are transferable for units/subject credit towards Bachelor’s degrees at all UC campuses.

UC San Diego Master’s Degree Programs

What are UC San Diego Master’s Degrees? The following UC San Diego Master’s Degrees, also known as Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) programs—are fully accredited, graduate degrees for professionals, conferred by the University of California, San Diego and administered through Extension. Under a statewide project of the University of California, the MAS degree credential was introduced in January, 2001. Self-funded MAS degree programs are typically tailored to the lifestyle and level of experience of midcareer professionals and may be taken on a full- or part-time basis.

Are there admission requirements? Yes, like any other graduate program, there are specific admission requirements for each degree program. This may be a combination of a related undergraduate degree, specified minimum GPA, relevant work experience, résumé, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose with the application. See individual program websites for details.

“ I definitely feel like my earning a MAS degree helped me be competitive in getting my current position.”

What are some of the benefits of the degree programs? Through the program curriculums, students develop core competencies related to their fields of study. There are many networking opportunities with guest speakers, and individuals actively engaged in their respective healthcare careers.

Do I need to take the GRE/GMAT?

“ The constantly evolving health care environment used to be intimidating to approach. Now, I embrace the change and look forward to being a future leader in health care.” —Puneet Ghai (Leadership of Healthcare Organizations Grad)

No, the GRE/GMAT is not required for admission to these programs.

Who are the faculty? Courses are taught by renowned faculty from the UC San Diego School of Medicine, California Western School of Law, and leaders in the health care, business, and law industries. See individual program websites for details.

Who Benefits From a Certificate Program? • Savvy employers who understand that encouraging professional growth is one of the best ways to attract and retain talented employees. • Career-oriented employees who want to acquire specialized training or hone existing knowledge and skills. • Skilled professionals who need to stay current with new developments in their fields.
