Terah J Stewart Ph D ofessor of Higher Education and Student d Gender Studies and the Center for Ex marginalized and stigmatized identities, y-based activism, and antiblackness in unded in critical, disruptive frameworks, including Black feminist and afropessimist perspectives

His 2021 Op-Ed “On Labor Acknowledgements and Honoring the Sacrifice of Black Americans,” published in Diverse Issues in Higher Education, has been used and put into practice at institutions across the country where professionals embrace and encourage others to embrace an ethic of recognizing the impact and import of chattel slavery on the histories and legacies of the United States

A recognized scholar, he was named a 2023 Emerging Scholar by ACPA and received the Outstanding Book Award in 2023 for Sex Work on Campus. His influential Op-Ed on labor acknowledgments has been widely cited across universities and social institutions. Dr. Stewart has published in several prestigious journals and authored Sex Work on Campus (2022) and Identity-Based Student Activism (2020), and co-author of the forthcoming Fat On Campus: The Voices and Images of Fat College Students and the Impacts of Fatphobia in 2025.

Originally from Los Angeles, Sofia moved to San Diego to pursue her studies. Sofia has earned high distinction honors in Ethnic Studies, Quarterly Provost Honors, and has gained hands-on experience through multiple jobs and internships, including positions focused on public transportation, urban development, student affairs. Passionate about creating equitable urban spaces, she is excited to continue her academic and professional journey in urban planning and GIS.

Jewel enjoys mentoring first-year and transfer students at both the Black Resource Center and OASIS. Additionally, she is pursuing research as a McNair Scholar. In her free time, she enjoys attending concerts, writing stories, and spending time with her dog, Joshua.

During her time at UCSD, Rio has served as an Outreach and Engagement Intern and Social Justice Educator at the Cross-Cultural Center, an Acoustics Intern at the Dolphin Cognition Lab, and as a Development Intern at Zero Gravity Management, a production company based in Los Angeles. In addition, she has studied film at UCLA’s Creative Producing Institute and studied African American Literature and Creative Writing through the Writers in Paris Global Seminar. Her academic interests are neuroimaging and its applications to understand, diagnose, and treat neuropsychiatric disorders. Upon graduation, Rio intends to serve as a junior specialist at a neuroscience lab studying ultrasound technology and its applications for noninvasive neurointervention. In her free time, she writes short films with her younger sister who is a student filmmaker at UCI.
