Fiscal year 2021 was another record-breaking fundraising year for the university, with more than $376.4 million in philanthropic support. The financial markets also allowed for outstanding endowment returns.

Our endowment grew by over $600 million and is valued at nearly $2.6 billion. Now in the final year of the Campaign for UC San Diego, we are in awe of the generosity and enthusiasm of friends like you. Together, we are transforming UC San Diego into a premier destination for education, health care, research, culture and arts.

JOHN M. HOLLERAN FUND

BEING HER GENUINE SELF ENRICHING THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE THROUGH UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS Established as part of a generous bequest of more than $500,000 with the intention of championing self-identified gay or lesbian undergraduates, the John M. Holleran Fund supports students majoring in chemistry, biology or physics.

For the 2021–22 academic year, the Holleran Scholarship was awarded to first-generation college student and neurobiology major Zoe Zacharakis ’23.

When she was a first-year student, Zoe took a class titled The Languages and Cultures of America, which sparked her interest in the field of neurolinguistics, the study of how language is stored in the brain. Inspired to investigate medical diagnostic techniques and medical neurosciences, she began to develop research skills to help her become a clinical neuropsychiatrist.

oSTEM students are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of queer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists.

Zoe is taking on the challenge of putting herself through school, and the Holleran Scholarship is helping her expand her horizons.

As a member of UC San Diego Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (oSTEM), a campus organization that imagines an intersectional world in which LGBTQIA+ individuals in STEM achieve success and are celebrated, Zoe is finding a shared love of science among her peers. “I hope this scholarship shows others that it is possible to be active in both scientific academia and the LGBTQ+ community without limiting one’s opportunities,” she said.

Scholarships give students opportunities to develop the skills they need to create a more just, equitable society. The Holleran Scholarship supports undergraduates seeking academic growth and personal strength in community, making a significant impact on dedicated science students, like Zoe, in perpetuity.

THE POWER OF ENDOWMENTS IN SHAPING PUBLIC HEALTH A NEW SCHOOL, A NEW DEAN AND A NEWLY ENDOWED CHAIR The John and Sally Hood Family Foundation has given $3 million to establish the Hood Family Endowed Dean’s Chair in Public Health at UC San Diego. The gift is intended to support excellence in research, education and practice of public health at the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at UC San Diego.

chair-holder of the Hood Family Chair. An endowed chair is one of the highest honors that an academic institution can confer upon a faculty member.

“We have full confidence in Dean Anderson’s leadership to grow and develop this vital educational pathway for UC San Diego,” said Sally Hood. “She has the skill, dedication and compassion to lead a new school of public health and cultivate future leaders in this field.”

An internationally recognized epidemiologist, Anderson’s research focuses primarily on connections between nutrition and chronic diseases as well as the use of clinical trials and interventions to prevent risk factors for diseases such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease, diet-related cancers and obesity. Her efforts as a researcher and an educator have been instrumental in shifting public health policy and practice toward a more comprehensive and equitable future.

“I am grateful to Sally and John for their generosity and investment in the health of this region and in this school,” said Anderson. “They are champions of public health. This gift will be transformative as we build a school community that cultivates leaders and builds an infrastructure where members can thrive. It also allows us to boldly meet the public health needs of the 21st century.”

A LEADERSHIP VISION COMES TO LIFE IN SUPPORT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND ATHLETICS

The student experience at UC San Diego spans many activities — from classes and clubs to research and extracurriculars. Which is why when the Chancellor’s Scholarship Challenge announced a $1 match to every $2 received in eligible student support up to $5,000,000, Gary Jacobs ’79 and his wife, Jerri-Ann, took the opportunity to enhance both academics and athletics.

As UC San Diego becomes a full member in the Division I Big West Conference, scholarship support is more important than ever. The conference requires that UC San Diego fund athletic scholarships for seven sports, including baseball. And the JerriAnn and Gary Jacobs Family Baseball Scholarship Endowment will ensure talented scholar-athletes are supported in perpetuity.

“As a Division III school when I was a student and as a Division II school, athletics were not a unifying tradition for students and alumni,” Gary said. “The move to Division I will provide excitement on campus and an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with UC San Diego.”

The couple’s gift to Triton baseball is just part of their support for students. They also expanded the Jerri-Ann and Gary E. Jacobs Endowed Fellowship in the Division of Social Sciences to further help the university recruit outstanding scholars. “UC San Diego is always competing for the most competitive graduate students,” Jerri-Ann said. “Our fellowship provides the additional resources to attract these stellar students.”

Through the visionary support of campus leaders like the Jacobs, UC San Diego continues to be the top destination for the best and brightest across disciplines and around the world.

REIMAGINING ART AND CREATIVITY BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH CRAFT A UC San Diego treasure once lost has resurfaced in an era of expansion and transformation for the university.

The Craft Center, a beloved space that nurtured creativity for decades, closed in 2012 due to vital safety renovations.

With the help of fond community members, alumni, staff and students, the Craft Center’s reimagining and reopening has now become a reality in the new North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood.

Alumna Wendy Kwok ’99, who found her passion for glass art in a paperweight at the 1996 Craft Center fair, is resolved to ensure equitable student access to the new Craft Center. Majoring in the biological sciences, she found the Craft Center to be a refuge from her rigorous studies, and she wishes to make the same creative escape available to all students through her Creatively Realizing Art and Fun Together (C.R.A.F.T.) Endowment.

“I hope this endowment empowers students in all fields of study, as the Craft Center provides a safe space for self-expression and wellness of the mind and spirit,” said Wendy. She also hopes to encourage others to join her in enhancing the student experience with matching gifts toward her $250,000 inspiration challenge contribution to the endowment.

The C.R.A.F.T. Endowment will support student participation in Craft Center programs including classes, workshops, events and exhibitions at little to no cost. Steps from dining, housing and lecture halls, students will explore favorites like ceramics, jewelry-making and woodworking, and new programs such as surfboard shaping and culinary arts — and along the way, they’ll find their own muse for a lifetime of discovery and connection.

R/V BOB AND BETTY BEYSTER ENDOWED STUDENT RESEARCH FUND

EXPLORING THE CALIFORNIA COASTLINE THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE ONBOARD A 42-FOOT SCIENTIFIC WORK BOAT For decades, scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography have conducted fundamental research using a world-class fleet of oceangoing vessels, while teaching our students to understand and protect the planet.

In 2019, exciting opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom, advance nearshore marine exploration and develop new technologies came together when a new research vessel arrived in San Diego. The R/V Bob and Betty Beyster fills an important niche for research and teaching on a fast and flexible platform. This first-of-its-kind, nationally recognized research vessel was acquired thanks to an outpouring of philanthropic support that raised more than $1.2 million in honor of Mrs. Betty Beyster and the late Dr. J. Robert Beyster.

“This opportunity really aligned my dad’s love for being on the water along with his and my mom’s philanthropic interests in investing in students and giving them direct access to hands-on science,” said Mary Ann Beyster.

Access to ship time for students is vital to fostering independent study and practical application of what they learn ashore.

On board, students take part in scientific operations previously available only on much larger research ships at a much higher cost. To ensure students have access to the research vessel for years to come, the Beyster family founded the R/V Bob and Betty Beyster Endowed Student Research Fund, connecting boundless undergraduate curiosity with the rich capabilities of the ship.

With the entire Southern California coastal zone now accessible, student research support is helping a new generation to investigate our oceans, Earth and atmosphere in search of solutions to our greatest environmental challenges and a better understanding of our planet.

ELAINE GALINSON / JOSEPH GLICKMAN CAMPUS CIVILITY PROGRAM

TRITONS TOGETHER A MASTER CLASS IN INCLUSIVE COMMUNICATION Differences in opinions, appearances, cultural beliefs or financial means can often make people in the same room feel worlds apart. For Elaine Galinson, teaching students how to bridge those differences creates community, facilitates necessary change and works to preserve the America she believes in.

In 2019, Elaine endowed the Galinson/Glickman Campus Civility Program, a partnership between UC San Diego and the San Diego-based National Conflict Resolution Center. Through the Department of Student Services, the program engages all principal members of UC San Diego’s more than 500 student organizations in The Art of Inclusive Communication training.

“I know that these students who receive the training will most likely become the leaders of whatever field they go on to,” Elaine said. “What they do professionally with their futures, and what they do with their progeny — this is the way that I really see this having a long-lasting impact.”

The program demonstrates how dialogue about conflict, while sometimes uncomfortable, ultimately leads to better understanding of others’ perspectives. Supporting increased empathy, inclusivity and civility and promoting communitybuilding and social cohesion, the program asks us to explore and reevaluate our assumptions. “With conflict there is room for growth, resolution, development and opportunity,” said a member of the Multi-Asian Student Association.

Also known as Tritons Together, the Galinson/Glickman Campus Civility Program is shaping global citizens who respect the humanity of all individuals and act in ways that support diversity.

Through Elaine’s generous support, generations of students will learn to celebrate differences and create places of belonging wherever they go.
