Welcome from Your Recruitment Team!

Welcome to the University of Cincinnati! On behalf of the entire recruitment team, we'd like to offer a glimpse into our community through the 2019 Potential New Member Handbook.

We are so excited that you are interested in joining one of our Panhellenic sororities!

Being a part of a sorority brings friendships, bonds and experiences you'll cherish for a lifetime. Every woman in our community has gone through a recruitment process to find their home. We hope that during this process, you too are able to find a home that you love and that offers a sense of belonging!

Use this book as a guide during the first steps in finding your home in our Panhellenic community. It is designed to help with any questions you have about our community and the recruitment process. As you'll see here and during recruitment, each of our chapters are filled with empowered women with a variety of different personalities.

Take the opportunity to join a sorority where you feel empowered and find sisters who empower you!

Letter from the VP-Recruitment Hello! My name is Chiane Boom, and I am thrilled to be serving as this year's VP of Recruitment. My passion for growing the Panhellenic community sparked when I served as a Rho Gamma (Recruitment Guide) last year. It was by far one of my favorite experiences in college because I loved supporting the women joining our sisterhood.

Now, almost a year later, I am so proud to be overseeing the Recruitment process as VP of Recruitment alongside my fabulous directors, and helping so many women find their homes away from home. I have seen and heard so many stories about women growing and developing during their time as part of the community. Leaders are formed, friendships blossom and positive change is made as women support women towards a common goal. This impactful experience is something I want as many people to have as possible, so I strive to create an inclusive, welcoming, comfortable and positive recruitment experience for all those interested.

I have gotten so much out of my experiences in the Panhellenic community and can't wait to meet all our Potential New Members! Please reach out to me if you have any questions about this process. Who Are We? What is Panhellenic?

The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is an umbrella organization that serves 26 national and international sororities.

NPC is one of the largest organizations that advocates for the advancement of women. The University of Cincinnati has 10 National Panhellenic Conference chapters, as well as one associate member.

What is Recruitment?

Recruitment is the way to join 1 of the 10 Panhellenic Sororities! Fall recruitment contains Potential New Members: women going through recruitment, who participate in a structured process which allows them to see what each sorority has to offer. From this structured process, the Potential New Member will decide which sorority is best suited for them through the mutual selection process.

Panhellenic Values

Scholarship: Sororities concentrate on creating successful scholarship programs that help each member reach her academic goals. Chapters take great pride in their academic efforts and encourage their members to make education a top priority.

Leadership: There are many opportunities for leadership during your time as a sorority woman, both within your chapter and on campus at UC. Sororities encourage active involvement in campus organizations and foster the skills necessary for their members to become strong leaders.

Social Activities: Every UC sorority offers a healthy balance of social activities that focus on sisterhood, friendship, and fun! The Panhellenic Council promotes safety and discretion at all chapter-sponsored activities. Ohio state law, university policies and each organization's risk management procedures are strictly enforced and followed to increase safety.

Philanthropy & Service: Involvement in community service is a priority among all chapters at UC. Sorority women contribute volunteer efforts and monetary donations to a number of worthwhile local and national organizations on both the local and national levels.

Registration Fees Early Bird Registration: May 6 - June 30 ($35) Registration July 1 - August 25 ($45) Late Registration: August 26th -September 6 ($50) Once beginning the registration process, be sure you complete all the information at that time. If you do not, your information will not be saved and you will have to restart the registration process.

After submitting your registration you will be routed to the payment site. If you do not submit your payment, your registration will not be valid.

What to Expect:Rho Gammas A recruitment guide, also known as a Rho Gamma, is an active member of a sorority at the University of Cincinnati. A recruitment guide's purpose is to assist you throughout the recruitment process and to model Panhellenic spirit!

Rho Gammas have been through months of training in preparation for recruitment. They are prepared to answer any questions you may have, and aid you in selecting the chapter that is best for your interests and needs. Rho Gammas are available any time, day or night, to assist with any issues and offer guidance in a one-on-one setting.

Attendance During Recruitment

Recruitment is a process that requires a substantial but reasonable commitment of time and effort. Women participating in recruitment must be available to attend all scheduled invitational rounds and evening events. Exceptions can be made for university-related obligations, and we will make every effort to schedule your recruitment rounds around your conflicts.

Women with considerable schedule conflicts resulting in multiple absences from recruitment events are encouraged to consider Continuous Open Bidding (also known as informal recruitment) or waiting to participate in formal recruitment the following year.

Open Houses:

Friday Sept. 13th & Saturday Sept. 14th

PNMs will spend 30 minutes in each chapter to speak and meet with women in the chapter. You will get to know the basics of what each chapter has to offer, and you will get to tell them a little about you.

We will provide a t-shirt for these two days. Wear whatever makes you comfortable on the bottom - jeans, nice shorts or a skirt!

Philanthropy: Sunday Sept. 15th 35 minutes will be spent in the houses on your schedule.

You will receive your schedule in the morning from your Rho Gamma.

On this day, you will talk to women in the houses and learn more about their Philanthropy. A t-shirt will be provided for you. Feel free to wear jeans, shorts, skirts - whatever makes you feel comfortable!

Sisterhood: Friday Sept. 20th You will spend 40 minutes in the houses on your schedule.

During this day, you will have deeper conversations with the women of the chapter and get to know them better. You will learn about their bonds as sisters.

This day becomes dressier.

You can wear a skirt and blouse, nice pants, or a dress. Whatever suits you!

Preference Night: Saturday Sept. 21st You will spend 60 minutes in your scheduled houses.

Today you will have a chance to talk to the women in the chapter for a bit longer. This is a very special night, as chapter members will share what their chapter means to them, and PNMs will get a taste of the chapters’ ritual.

Dress is cocktail attire - like you’re attending a wedding!

Terms to Know Bid: An invitation extended by only one sorority per potential new member on Bid Day; this is the formal invitation to become a new member of that sorority.

Chapter: The women comprising each local collegiate group of an inter/national sorority.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB): A period other than fully-structured recruitment when Panhellenic sororities acquire new members.

Formal Recruitment: The formal process of mutual selection by which chapters invite potential new members to join their sorority prior to the fall semester.

Legacy: A woman whose mother, sister or grandmother is an alumna or active member of a sorority.

New Member: A woman who has accepted the bid of a sorority or has taken the first step towards full membership but has not been initiated.

Panhellenic Community: The term that refers to all members of the sorority community at the University of Cincinnati.

Panhellenic Council: The governing body composed of representatives elected from the panhellenic sorority chapters who oversee the functions and programs of the community.

Potential New Members: An unaffiliated woman who attends formal recruitment or participates in Continuous Open Bidding.

Recruitment Guide (Rho Gamma): A Panhellenic representative who assists PNMs during the recruitment process. This woman provides objective advice and support to anyone going thorugh the recruitment process.

Mutual Selection Process

Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each potential new member with those of the existing sorority chapters. Every woman is given an opportunity to find a sorority that best suits her personality, interests and future goals, while providing an organized and unbiased membership selection process for the chapters.

Invitations are only guaranteed to potential new members for the first round.

Invitations to subsequent rounds are made based on selections of the chapters and the preferences of the potential new members. PNM schedules will be maximized so they are able to meet with as many chapters as possible during their recruitment experience.

Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement: If after going through the recruitment process, a PNM decides she would like to join either one or both of the houses she visits on Preference round, she will be asked to sign a Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA). This agreement states that you are willing to accept a bid from any group you list whose Preference round you attend. It also means that should you not accept the bid, or break your pledge prior to initiating, you are ineligible to join another NPC sorority on campus for 12 months. Your Rho Gamma will discuss this in great detail with you prior to signing!

Academic Standards Per the National Panhellenic Conference, our Panhellenic Council has not defined specific academic requirements/standards for potential new members to participate in recruitment. That being said, it is important to understand that each chapter has grade point average requirements set by their inter/national organization and the local members.

To be eligible for recruitment, and active standing, you must be enrolled at least part-time in a matriculating degree-seeking program at the University of Cincinnati, including branch campuses.

However, it should be noted that some chapters require students to be full-time and/or studying on main campus.

Potential new members who do not meet the minimum academic requirements of a specific chapter are typically released early in the recruitment process to allow these women to explore other alternatives. You can preview each chapter's GPA requirements on their designated handbook page!

Financial Commitment

The financial requirements of joining a sorority vary from chapter to chapter. The main costs associated with becoming a member of a sorority at the University of Cincinnati consist of membership fees each semester, one-time new member fees, cost of living in a sorority house and miscellaneous fees specific to each chapter. Members who choose to live in the sorority house can expect additional housing fees. Dues are typically higher during your first semester to account for initiation fees, new member fees, building funds, security deposits and badge fees. Specific financial information will be discussed during the first recruitment round.

It is important to consider all of the financial obligations associated with joining and sorority. We encourage you to ask any questions you might have regarding the potential costs of membership.

Members of the UC sorority community are more than willing to answer your questions at any point during the process.

Hazing Code Hazing in any form at the University of Cincinnati is absolutely forbidden. Hazing is defined as an activity which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental health, physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, any organization operating subject to the sanction of the public or private school or of any institution of higher education in the state of Ohio. In addition, the University of Cincinnati Student Rights and Responsibilities Governing Student Behavior document prohibits any form of racial, ethnic and sexual harassment.

Alcohol Policy Alcohol is strictly prohibited during Panhellenic Recruitment and New Member Events. Members of fraternities and sororities must comply with local, state and federal laws including the laws that are outlined in their national organization, housing board and advisor(s). Policies regarding the use and distribution of alcohol can be found in the Fraternity and Sorority life Guidelines on our website, as well as the Student Code of Conduct.

Frequently Asked Questions What if I don't have any recommendation letters?

You are not required to have any letters of recommendation to go through recruitment. If you know alumnae from chapters we have on campus, ask them to write you a letter. These letters are written to introduce you to the chapter members, but it does not guarantee you will be given a bid to a certain chapter.

How do I know who my Rho Gamma is and where do I meet her?

Rho Gammas will contact you via email! Your Rho Gammas will give you all the details you need to know before recruitment! We suggest downloading the "GroupMe" app. This app is used by Rho Gammas to contact you once you have received their initial email!

What if I don't get invited back to a house I liked?

Don't sweat it! Stay positive, trust the process and remain open minded. If you are invited back to a house, that means the women in that chapter are interested in you and want to know more about you!

If I'm going through recruitment as a sophomore or for a second time, am I at a disadvantage?

Many women choose to go through recruitment as a sophomore or a second time for various reasons. Whatever your situation is, be yourself and stay confident!

Everyone's path to joining a sorority is unique, and you can share your story with chapters if you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions Am I guaranteed to receive an invitation for membership (bid) from a chapter?

Invitations are only guaranteed to PNMs during the first round of recruitment, Friday and Saturday. There is no guarantee that you will be invited to attend the second, third or fourth event rounds. If a PNM attends the Preference round and maximizes her choice(s), she will receive a bid from one of those chapters.

Will my grades suffer if I am in a sorority?

The all-Greek average GPA at UC is consistently higher than those who aren't a part of the Greek Community. Each sorority has its own scholarship program that will help you succeed academically as well as learn to effectively manage your time outside of class. Academics are very important in the Greek Community!

What if I want to withdraw from the recruitment process?

We encourage each Potential New Member to stick through the recruitment process until the very end. But of course you are allowed to withdraw if you realize it is not the right time for you to join a sorority. If you do decide to withdraw, talk to your Rho Gamma about next steps.
