Dear UCP-SARnet Partners, Members and Friends,

Facilitator Corner

Dr. Marek Wosinski

I wish we could always report good news on realization of our plans, but for now we have some challenges to face. Firstly, the "It Takes One" event planned by Forks for Change has been postponed till the fall semester. Although the club has been applying for grants and sponsorships all semester, there was not enough time to generate sufficient interest in this project and therefore they were unable to secure funding which in turn made it difficult to arrange for speakers and presenters. In addition another similar event is being organized at the same time by ASU Student Government. So, in the place of the grand concert envisioned for “It Takes One”, there will instead be a smaller scale inspirational event. The Global Poverty Project is coming to Arizona April 16th and 17th and Forks for Change will arrange for them to present at Arizona State University on both days. For the International Leadership Summit in China, we are still in the middle of the recruitment campaign and really hope that students, faculty, and community members will take advantage of this opportunity. The deadline for registration for the summit has been extended till April 30th to allow for more time for our network of contacts to spread the

word. And once again, we sincerely ask all our members to share information about the Summit and help us to recruit participants that can contribute to leadership in their communities and who can also make a change for the Millennium Development Goals. As a reminder, the new UCP-SARnet based online course "Multicultural Perspective on Community Development" has been approved and cross listed by numerous ASU units and the recruitment for fall semester has already begun. More information about the course can be found on our website and the course itself can be found in the ASU course catalog as NLM 494, SOS 494, PAF 494, SSH 494, SWU 498, SWG 591, and CRD 598. And finally, we are still working out our collaboration with Gandhi Research Foundation and Jain Irrigation Systems, Ltd. Details of this collaboration will be finalized after the inauguration of the Gandhi Museum at the end of March. Altogether, we look with excitement for April and May when all our semester’s hard work and plans will hopefully materialize.

New Project: International Entrepreneurship Workshop in India Last month during my visit to India I had the opportunity to meet the founder of a socially responsible company that can really make a difference for communities—Bhavarlal H. Jain is a millionaire entrepreneur in the Jalgaon District. Mr. Jain opened an entire complex that includes the Anubhuti school (images displayed are from the Anubhuti website), the Gandhi Foundation, and will also include a huge museum on Gandhian history and practices. The Jain Complex is very sustainable and environmental. They have collaboration with the farmers in the community around them—their research center studies plants as well as irrigation systems, they give their latest ideas to farmers to implement, the farmers then give crop back to Jain Irrigation Systems to make juices and other products in their factories, and both the farmers and the company profit from sold products. To be organized in collaboration with Gandhi Research Foundation and Jain Irrigation Systems Ltd, we hope to hold a one week long summer workshop that will train community leaders to create an ecologically sound agro-business based on effective water management practices. This will take place at the Jain Hills Complex and will focus specifically on the sustainable model that Jain Corporation successfully implements. More details on this to come later. Regional Updates: AFRICA

New Knowledge Partner: Care for Life Last week Linda Harper, president of Care for Life, and Ruth Ann Van Wagoner, administrative assistant, joined our executive team meeting to tell us more about how this organization was founded and how it progressed into what it is today. Mozambique, as many African Countries, is deficient in all areas of the Millennium Development Goals—poverty and extreme hunger are the norm, literacy levels are low, children die young with malaria being a common cause of death, pregnancy related complications leave children motherless, and then there are the unemployment rates, the HIV positive rates, and the preventable diseases due to improper sanitation to take into account. In the year 2000, midwife Cindy Packard, co-founder of Care for Life, traveled to Mozambique to see what she could do to help mothers and children at risk. When she met with the minister of health there, he told her that they really don’t need someone to deliver babies in displacement camps, what they needed was someone who could deliver life saving knowledge to the people. Cindy and her husband Blair tried to study what the most effective way to help would be. What they noticed was that a lot of the solutions being given to Africa were addressing secondary issues and not the primary source of problems. This is a basis as to why Care for Life was created. Their mission now goes beyond just child and maternal health, they work to transform impoverished families into self-reliant, sustainable ones. To help families in the long run, CFL developed the Family Preservation Program which is a holistic approach that focuses on 8 areas simultaneously. The Family Preservation Program makes families self-sufficient by having them set goals in each of the 8 areas and then work to accomplish these goals. An important fact to note though is that CFL works with the people and not

for them. The people do the work for themselves – they plant their own gardens, fix their own houses, buy the mosquito nets they need – it is all about giving the people selfreliance and the self-esteem they need to continue bettering their lives. As Linda Harper presented in this 10 minute video, the changes that come about in CFL villages are profound. Take the example of couple Maria Augusto and Ignacio Alberto Joquim. With the goals they accomplished through the family preservation program, they now have a new house foundation laid out, a latrine, and a business selling pigs and vegetables. But what is even more astonishing is the behavioral changes that came about from within the family unit. Ignacio used to be an alcoholic and an abusive husband as the once-helpless Maria states, but now he treats her well and is a better person; Maria is very happy with the changes in her life since CFL came to help her village. As families achieve their goals, every 6 months Care for Life acknowledges those achievements through specific predetermined rewards. Initially these rewards are what motivate the communities to set and accomplish more goals. But after the 2 and a half years that CFL is with them they already can see the permanent changes that are their motivation to continue what they have learned – their babies aren’t dying of malaria because of the simple mosquito nets, they aren’t getting diarrhea all the time due to latrines keeping waste separate from their drinking water, they have food, they have their own businesses that are generating an income, and they have a home. Visit the Care for Life Website to find out more about the organization and to find out how you can help in making these lasting changes to the lives of those in need. Regional Updates: ASIA MDG Drinking Water Target Met Early! During my daily scanning of the news, I was pleasantly surprised to see some good news in what has a tendency to be a negatively-driven realm. The UN reported that the target for access to improved drinking water sources has been met before predicted but there is still work to be done regarding safe drinking water and sanitation. One important point to note is that the target referred to aims to “halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation” and hence although more of the world population is now confirmed to have access to improved water sources (safety of these sources aside), disparities still exist, with Asian countries having the least improvement in water access.

Images belong to UNICEF. Side note, Woodland is a sponsor of the UNICEF water and sanitation program in India.

According to the UNICEF/WHO Joint Monitoring Program report released in December, “Of the estimated 884 million people without access to improved sources of drinking water in 2008, 37% live in SubSaharan Africa, 25% in Southern Asia, 17% in Eastern Asia and 9% in South-Eastern Asia”. So although this March marks part of the water target being met, there is still work to be done to improve conditions in specific areas as well as to improve the overall access to safe water sources. These targets are in reach. Take note in the fact that what we do helps and that great things can still be accomplished if we are willing to work for them! Sonal Patel Member UCP-SARnet

The Global Poverty Project Coming to ASU The Global Poverty Project is a community organization that was founded by Hugh Evans and Simon Moss to educate and bring awareness to the pandemic of extreme poverty. They do so through a compelling presentation—1.4 Billion Reasons—that is delivered around the globe. Australian-born actor and humanitarian Hugh Jackman signed on as a face for the Global Poverty Project Live Below the Line campaign, which challenges people for just 5 days to live on a small amount of money to better understand the conditions of living in extreme poverty, where extreme poverty is defined as living below $1.50 a day. Are you up for the challenge? The Global Poverty Project is going to be presenting at ASU on April 16th and 17th. Our Forks for Change members are finalizing the details and will be promoting the event in the upcoming weeks. Though we initially had our It Takes One event planned for that time, since we could not secure funding this semester that idea will have to be put on hold till next semester. We still hope that ASU students will benefit from the 1.4 billion reasons presentation and be equally motivated to get involved in volunteerism for the week of service and beyond. You can visit the Global Poverty Project website to find out more about what they do and to also to book a presentation or attend an existing presentation. Regional Updates: SOUTH AMERICA Dead Dolphins wash ashore Peruvian Coastline This past month, hundreds of dead bottlenose dolphins have been found over 100km stretch of beach in North Peru. The potential causes of death are linked to off-shore oil exploration and drilling in that area. One possible way this could have caused the deaths is by the dolphins consuming smaller fish that were in turn contaminated by the effects of oil exploration. Though the exact reasons for the deaths are unexplained as of yet, it is certain that human activity is the culprit. At a time when reducing biodiversity loss is crucial to ensure environmental sustainability by year 2015 (MDG 7), it is important to get human activities that are damaging to animal habitats in check before the effects become irreversible. Though the bottlenose dolphins are not endangered, something that could harm this highly adaptable species in such large numbers poses a risk to more susceptible marine animals and should not be taken lightly. March 2nd, 2012 The Care for Life president Linda Harper and administrative assistant Ruth Ann Van Wagoner joined us today to tell us more about their organization and about their work in Mozambique. Care for Life has been a registered Non Governmental Organization since 2002 and has developed over the years from an organization concerned with child and maternal health to one that focuses on changing families and communities entirely with their 30 month program that helps entire villages accomplish goals towards becoming more self-sufficient.

March 9th, 2012 This meeting was devoted to a presentation by Doug Hirano and Kamana Khadka, sharing with us background on their organization—Asian Pacific Community in Action—one of UCP-SARnet's newest organizational members.

Introducing Members of Our Advisory Board New Advisory Board Member: Welcome Dr. Rimjhim Aggarwal It is my pleasure to inform you that Dr. Rimjhim Aggarwal from the ASU Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS) has joined the UCP-SARnet Advisory Board. She agreed to help us in developing our partnership with Jain Irrigation Systems, Ltd in India as well as in establishing collaboration with GIOS. As per her ASU biography, “Dr. Aggarwal's research explores global dimensions of sustainability such as the links

between globalization, local ecosystems, and poverty in lessdeveloped countries. She has conducted extensive field work on groundwater-irrigation institutions in India; her recent research examines the emerging tradeoffs between water availability and the growing demands of agriculture in dryland regions of the world”. Please welcome Dr. Aggarwal into our community! Dr. Marek Wosinski Facilitator UCP-SARnet
