LOOKING AT LOUISVILLE: Louisville enters the championship game of the AAC Tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country, winning its last four games and 11 of its last 12. The Cards have won their last four by an average margin of 34 points per game. Louisville is 10-6 all-time against UConn, including eight wins in their last nine meetings. The only UConn victory during that time was in the 2011 Big East Tournament championship game at Madison Square Garden. Senior guard Russ Smith, coming off an impressive 42-point performance against Houston on Friday, leads the Cardinals in scoring at 18.2 ppg and assists at 4.7, while sophomore Montrezl Harrell is the top rebounder at 8.1. Louisville won both games against UConn this regular season, topping the Huskies on Jan. 18 at Gampel Pavilion, 76-64, and on March 8 at the KFC Yum! Center, 81-48. SEMIFINAL THRILLER: UConn upended top-seeded Cincinnati, 58-56, Friday in the AAC Tournament semifinals. In a hard-fought contest, Cincinnati held a 31-27 lead at halftime and UConn trailed, 41-34, with 13:43 remaining in the game. The Huskies then went on a 17-2 run, holding the Bearcats scoreless for nearly 6 minutes in a 9-0 run to start, allowing one bucket, then going on another 8-0 explosion. It was nip-and-tuck down the stretch, however, as Cincinnati cut UConn’s lead to 57-56 with 0:14 to go, but UConn’s Shabazz Napier hit a free throw with 0:12 and Cincy could not score the rest of the way, although a contested layup by the Bearcats’ Sean Kilpatrick rolloed across the rim before falling away. Napier led four double-figure UConn scorers with 15 points. DeAndre Daniels had 14 points and 9 rebounds, Ryan Boatright added 13 and Niels Giffey tossed in 11. ANOTHER 25-WIN SEASON: With 26 wins already this season, UConn has extended its streak of seasons with 20 wins or more to four straight, six of the last seven years, and 15 of the last 17 seasons. It is the 13th season in which UConn won at least 25 games, the previous 12 under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun. Overall, UConn has produced 30 seasons of 20 wins or more, 20 under former coach Jim Calhoun and two under current coach Kevin Ollie. UConn also extended its streak of winning seasons to 27 in a row. UConn last had a sub-.500 season (9-19) in 1986-87, Calhoun’s first season as head coach. Calhoun then guided the Huskies to 25 consecutive winning seasons and second-year coach Kevin Ollie now has two. VS. RANKED OPPONENTS: Using the AP Top 25 as the standard, Louisville will be the 10th nationally-ranked opponent that UConn has faced this season. It is the fourth consecutive game against a ranked opponent for UConn and the fifth ranked opponent in UConn’s last six games. The Huskies are 6-3 vs. ranked opponents this season after defeating (#15/13) Florida on December 2, (#17/17) Memphis on Jan. 16, (#20/22) Memphis again on Feb. 15, (#11/12) Cincinnati on March 1, (#19/19) Memphis for a third time on March 13 and (#13/12) Cincinnati on March 14, while bowing to (#18/14) Louisville on Jan. 18, (#7/7) Cincinnati on Feb. 6, and (#11/9) Louisville on March 8. (Indiana was #22 on the USA Today poll, but unranked by AP when it lost to UConn on November 22). UConn is 132-165 all-time against ranked opponents, dating back to the 1950-51 season. Since 198990, UConn is 123-95 (.564) against ranked opponents and since the first NCAA championship season of 1998-99, the Huskies are 90-60 (.600) against ranked opponents. In the last 10 years, plus this year, UConn is 61-43 (.587) against ranked opponents.
