Jennifer Wendry Head Coach • 20th Season Jennifer Wendry

Jennifer Wendry is in her 20th season as the head coach of the University of Connecticut rowing program in 2016-17. She was named the head rowing coach in the fall of 1997 when women’s rowing became a varsity sport at

UConn. In 2014, she led UConn to a third place finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Mercer County Park. The Huskies finished seventh in 2015 and sixth in 2016. Wendry led the team to its most successful season in 2005. The team won the points trophy at the Dad Vail Championship as the varsity eight won, the junior varsity eight finished second, and the novice eight finished third. In 2005 the team also finished fourth at the Big East Championship – its highest finish at that event. The second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four all finished third, while the varsity eight placed fifth, and the varsity four was sixth. In 2004, Wendry saw the UConn junior varsity eight win the Dad Vail Championship. In 2010, SanfordWendry saw the UConn novice eight win the Dad Vail Championship. Prior to coming to UConn, Wendry was the novice women’s coach at the University of Pennsylvania, where she led the Quaker novice eight to the finals of the Eastern Sprints. In 1996 and 1997, she was the United States Junior National Development Team coach. Wendry, a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University, has been associated with rowing her entire life. She began rowing when she was seven years old and had her first race in a single when she was 10. Her coaching career began at age 16, when she began coaching youth programs for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club. After graduating from college, Sanford-Wendry taught elementary school for three years while coaching the Liverpool High School women’s crew. In 1995, her Liverpool High School senior eight won the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship. In addition to her coaching responsibilities at UConn, she is a member of the Female Athlete Performance

Committee and works with the Female Athlete Peer Group. Wendry comes from a large coaching family. Her father, Bill Sanford, retired in 2002 after coaching the men’s crew at Syracuse University for 37 years. Her sister Kris was the head women’s rowing coach at Syracuse from 1996 to 2010. At Marist College, her cousin Tom Sanford is the Director of Rowing and Head Women’s Coach. Wendry resides in Coventry, Conn. with her husband, Brian, and their sons Will (12), Wyatt (10) and Wade (5).

“Being the head coach of the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team has been tremendously rewarding. I have had the opportunity to see the team grow each year. We ask our student-athletes for three characteristics when they become a member of our program…positive attitude, positive effort and coachability. When those characteristics are present, great things happen. Part of our programs’ success can be attributed to our support staff. Chris West, our strength and conditioning coach, plays a major part in developing creative, yet challenging, workouts for our winter training program. Our academic advisor Becky Bacher offers the support needed to accomplish our academic goals, as shown by our continued success in the classroom. Of most importance, being a member of the UConn rowing team means being a part of a second family, a family that helps you through thick and thin during your college experience and creates friendships that last a lifetime.” – UConn head coach Jennifer Wendry

University of Connecticut 2016-17 University of Connecticut Rowing The 2017 spring season for UConn rowing looks very promising. The seniors - Katie Ullinger, Kate Boudreau, Arielle Sherman, Sarah Norman, and Katie Wheatley - were strong leaders throughout the fall season, setting great examples of our team culture and encouraging a positive, productive environment. This year’s team has demonstrated that they are stronger and more fit than ever, as they have embraced the training program and are charging forward, posting personal records on a variety of testing components. On the water, the fall racing season was one of the most successful in the program’s 20-year history. The walk-on group from the fall also measures up as one of the strongest walk-on groups, adding many tall, athletic, competitive student-athletes to the roster. The indoor training cycle between January and March will consist of a lot of cross training, erging and competitive scenarios to prepare us for the spring. Sprint racing season will kick off at the end of Spring Break against UCF. The racing season is exciting as the team will compete in large regattas like the Knecht Cup, and continue annual races with UMass, Holy Cross, Wesleyan, Trinity, and Coast Guard. New to the schedule this year is the Women’s Eastern Sprints Championship. This regatta takes place two weeks before the

6

2016-17 UConn Rowing

American Athletic Conference Championship and will provide competition against some great schools to prepare for the American Championship. The AAC Championship will be in Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida. We are excited to race on this amazing course that will be hosting the 2017 World Championships. The winner of the American Athletic Conference Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The Huskies will train hard to challenge UCF, Temple, SMU, Tulsa, San Diego State, and Sacramento State for the title that will earn them a ticket to Mercer County, N.J. for the 2017 NCAA Championship.

T

he UConn rowing team has been a regular Miami Beach visitor since taking its first South Florida training trip in January 1999. Since 2006, the team has made two Miami Beach trips each season – once in January during winter break, then again in March during spring break. The winter break trip is strictly training, while the spring break trip includes both training and racing. The Huskies typically open their spring racing season against the hometown Miami Hurricanes. The team’s home base in Miami is the Ronald W. Shane Center on scenic Indian Creek. The “creek”, actually a large protected waterway, leads into several canals and the Biscayne Bay, allowing for miles of rowing in all directions. “I can’t think of a better place to bring the team for winter rowing than Miami,” says UConn head coach Jennifer Wendry. “We can always count on warm temperatures, and given the amount of water access there, we can always find good water to practice on. The Shane Watersport Center is a well run training facility that has been very hospitable to us year after year. Having the opportunity to race the Miami Hurricanes in March, in addition to scrimmaging other collegiate teams that train there, completes the experience.”

Rowing team members spend time volunteering with local elementary schools.

Kate Hughes, former rowing team member and graduate of 2015, reads to students at the Hebron Elementary School.

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond the classrooms, libraries, field and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Committee consists of representatives from each of UConn’s intercollegiate teams. In addition to community service, the SAAC promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The UConn rowing team has a long tradition of being involved in SAAC and performing community service. The rowing team is one of the highest represented teams in SAAC, usually having over half the team participating in various events. This year, rowers have helped with food, coat, and toy drives, and have also spent time reading in elementary school classrooms. Members of the rowing team are also involved in the Goal Line program that works with East Hartford Middle School girls. Most recently, the rowing team took on a community service project of its own. Each student-athlete raised money for the Jump Rope for Heart program and spent time jump roping with children from Coventry Grammar School.

Members of the UConn rowing team work with student-athletes from other sports to gather toys and books from drives at Husky basketball games.

UConn’s campuses, where more than 30,000 students are enrolled in over 100 undergraduate majors and 86 graduate fields of study, are situated in prime locations between New York and Boston. In recent years, the University has been busy racking up high-profile nods from organizations like U.S. News & World Report for the quality of its education and initiatives. UConn’s main campus in Storrs is admitting the highest-achieving freshmen in University history. Student diversity continues to increase, as does the number of honors students, valedictorians, and salutatorians who consistently make UConn their top choice. The rise of the University over the last two decades has been astounding, as UConn achieves new heights of academic success – doubling research grants, attracting top students, and offering programs that continue to grow in prestige. Next Generation Connecticut, an unprecedented investment by the State of Connecticut, demonstrates UConn’s commitment to comprehensive research and education and ensures that we attract internationally renowned faculty and the world’s brightest students. These scholars enrich the University’s expertise in areas like environmental stability, digital media, science and engineering, language and culture, and health. With annual research expenditures in excess of $200 million, collaborative research is carried out within the departments of our 14 schools and colleges and at our more than 100 research centers and institutes. UConn offers distinct value to industry with an increasing volume of commercially viable innovations as the University transforms itself through research facilities and faculty in the science, technology, engineering, and math fields. A tradition of coaching winning athletes ensures UConn is a standout in Division I sports and fuels our academic spirit. As a vibrant, progressive leader, UConn fosters a diverse and dynamic culture that meets the challenges of a changing global society.

PRESIDENT

SUSAN HERBST S

usan Herbst was appointed as the 15th President of the University of Connecticut by its Board of Trustees in December of 2010, and arrived on campus in June of 2011. She is the first female president of the University, which was founded in 1881. Since that time, she has led multiple initiatives to strengthen teaching, research and service at the University. Chief among them is her four-year plan, approved by the University’s Board of Trustees in December 2011, to hire 300 new tenured or tenure-track faculty members at UConn – above and beyond filling vacancies – to significantly enhance course offerings and the University’s research capability. The initiative has resulted in new faculty hires across multiple disciplines, including both the sciences and humanities, building on existing faculty strengths as well as investing in emerging fields. President Herbst has also led the implementation of two recent major state investments in UConn: Next Generation Connecticut and Bioscience Connecticut, both of which were passed by the Connecticut state legislature and signed into law by Governor Dannel P. Malloy in 2013 and 2011, respectively. Next Generation Connecticut is a more than $1.5 billion endeavor that will expand educational opportunities, research, and innovation in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines at UConn over the next decade, as well as add new faculty in the humanities. The cornerstone of this effort is a major increase in the University’s enrollment, the expansion of our faculty – in addition to UConn’s current faculty hiring initiative – and new and updated facilities to accommodate enhanced STEM research and teaching, as well as UConn’s growing population. It also will support the academic missions, and the expansion of critical programs, at UConn’s Hartford and Stamford campuses. Bioscience Connecticut is an $864 million initiative that is revitalizing the UConn Health enterprise, expanding enrollment in the medical and dental classes, building new business incubators, creating centers of excellence with neighboring institutions, and more. Expansion plans include building a new world-class patient tower, an outpatient ambulatory center, and parking garages. Existing facilities will undergo major renovation, making room for updated infrastructure, state-of-the-art research laboratories, and modern educational spaces. Through Bioscience Connecticut, business incubator space at the University will double. Additional prominent clinician-scientists will also be recruited to the faculty to contribute toward UConn Health’s academic, clinical, and research programs. Bioscience Connecticut was critical to attracting The Jackson Laboratory to create a new billion-dollar personalized medicine laboratory on the UConn Health campus in Farmington as part of a new partnership with the University. In addition, President Herbst announced in 2012 that UConn would relocate one of its regional campuses, currently located in suburban West Hartford, back to downtown Hartford, where it was initially located in 1939 before being moved out of the city in the 1970s. In June 2014, it was announced that the new campus would be located and constructed at the site of the former Hartford Times building on

Prospect Street. The $115 million project will house 2,300 students and 250 employees, and be designed as a neighborhood campus anchored by a main building in the heart of downtown with other spaces located throughout the area. Classes are expected to begin in fall 2017. One of President Herbst’s other priorities is dramatically increasing the level of philanthropic giving to UConn through the UConn Foundation. Along with Joshua Newton, who began as president of the UConn Foundation in 2013, she has set the goal of eventually raising at least $100 million in new gifts per year, with a long-term goal of reaching an endowment value of $1 billion. Prior to her appointment at UConn, President Herbst served as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer of the University System of Georgia, where she led 15 university presidents and oversaw the academic missions for all 35 public universities in Georgia. Before arriving in Georgia, she was provost and executive vice president at the University at Albany (SUNY), and also served as officer in charge of the university from 2006 to 2007, upon the death of Kermit L. Hall. She previously served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University. Born in New York City and raised in Peekskill, N.Y., Herbst received her B.A. in Political Science from Duke University in 1984, and her Ph.D. in communication theory and research from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication in Los Angeles in 1989. Herbst spent 14 years at Northwestern University, joining the faculty in 1989 and serving until her departure to Temple in 2003. At Northwestern she held a variety of positions including professor of political science and chair of the department. She is a scholar of public opinion, media, and American politics, and is author of four books and many articles in these areas, most recently, Rude Democracy: Civility and Incivility in American Politics (2010). Along with Benjamin Page, Lawrence Jacobs, and Adam Berinsky, she edits the University of Chicago Press series in American Politics. She serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education.

DAVID BENEDICT

avid Benedict is in his first year as the Director of Athletics at the University of Connecticut and began his duties in March 2016. Prior to joining the Connecticut staff, Benedict served as the Chief Operating Officer for the athletics department at Auburn University for two years. Benedict is a highly-experienced athletic administrator who served as Deputy Athletic Director at Minnesota (2012-14) and in leadership positions at Virginia Commonwealth (2010-12), Long Beach State (2007-10) and Arizona State (19962006). Benedict brings to UConn a national reputation in athletic administration focused on student-athlete success in competition and academically, long-range strategic planning, donor development and fundraising and sound fiscal management. Benedict directed all the day-to-day operations of the Auburn athletic department, with particular emphasis in operational planning, resource allocation, budget development and strong financial management. He led the department in developing strategic longrange plans for a $120-plus million budget, facilities, staffing and accomplishing strategic goals. He coordinated a five-year strategic plan for Auburn athletics, which featured initiatives for strategic priorities and goals. Benedict directed a team of staff members and coaches in creating a facility master plan and the initiation of a game-day master plan. Benedict led a feasibility study to make renovations to Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium that initiated a $150-$180 million project. He negotiated a unique nine-year extension with Under Armour that included both product, cash and $10 million worth of stock. Benedict provided ongoing support for the administration of the Auburn football program and was the men’s basketball sport administrator. At Minnesota, Benedict held a similar position as he identified areas to increase external support and provided stewardship for sponsors and major donors. He worked with the University of Minnesota Foundation to create the largest athletics campaign in school history. Benedict directed a number of contracts and relationships that helped increase the Gophers’ revenue intake. Benedict was the Executive Associate Athletic Director at VCU during his time there and also served as Interim Athletic Director for several months. At VCU, he increased annual giving, tickets sales and sponsorship revenues each year. While serving as Interim AD, Benedict led the school’s transition from the Colonial Athletic Association to the Atlantic 10. In his role at Long Beach, he administrated all external areas of the department and restructured the entire fundraising process. Benedict was also the baseball sports administrator. He was the Associate Athletic Director for Development at Arizona State and streamlined all areas of external relations.

A native of Tempe, Ariz., Benedict, age 44, is a 1995 graduate of Southern Utah, where he was a linebacker on the football team. He earned a master’s degree from New Mexico Highlands in 1996, where he also was a graduate assistant football coach. STORRS

In addition to all that the city of Hartford and the state of Connecticut has to offer, the region within two hours of Storrs is ripe with cultural and entertainment possibilities.

SPRINGFIELD (47 miles)

NEW YORK CITY (142 miles)

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the Hall’s long list of inductees includes former UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. Once you finish your tour of the Hall of Fame, Springfield’s neighboring suburb of Agawam is the home of Six Flags New England, the region’s largest amusement park.

The largest city in the country and the “media capital of the world” is a UConn city. New York City is located approximately two hours from Storrs and when the Huskies are in town, they make their presence known. The UConn men’s basketball team returns to Madison Square Garden this December to play Syracuse and won the 2014 NCAA East Regional in the World’s Most Famous Arena on their way to the national championship. The UConn women’s basketball team has played in MSG seven times as it attracts the largest crowds for the sport in the Metropolitan area. The Husky football team made its Big Apple debut in 2014 when it played at Yankee Stadium and the men’s ice hockey team played last year in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center.

BOSTON (86 miles) The birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is a living history textbook, covering everything from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Meanwhile, the city blends its old world charm with a cosmopolitan new world attitude that is evidenced by some of the trendier shops and restaurants that line both historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Back Bay’s Newbury Street. One of the world’s foremost centers of education, Boston is home to over 50 colleges and universities; perhaps the entire world’s most concentrated collection of colleges. The greater Boston area also includes the summer beach resorts on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. A hub of sporting activity, the 2004, 2007 and 2013 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox have called fabled Fenway Park home since 1912. PROVIDENCE (51 miles) Rhode Island’s capital city shows that one of the nation’s smallest states also has plenty to offer its visitors. The multi-cultural capital city, which dates back to 1636, is the Ocean State’s centerpiece. The best known hamlet on the Rhode Island shore, the ocean town of Newport is world famous for its mansions and is a popular vacation destination for those seeking aquatic activities. Newport’s renowned music festival is also a well-attended annual event.
