Tonight’s winner will move on to the Paradise Jam championship game against either New Mexico or George Mason on Monday night (10 p.m. EST, 11 p.m. AST). The loser of tonight’s game will meet the loser of New Mexico-George Mason in the tourney’s third-place game on Monday night (7:30 p.m. EST, 8:30 p.m. AST). Both Monday night games will be televised by the CBS Sports Network. UP NEXT: UConn will play its next game Monday night on the concluding day of the Paradise Jam. The Huskies will either face New Mexico or George Mason in either the Paradise Jam championship game (10 p.m., EST, 11 p.m. AST) or the game for third place (7:30 p.m EST, 8:30 p.m. AST). New Mexico (2-0) reached the tourney semifinals with a 66-59 victory over Illinois-Chicago in the first round, while George Mason captured a 52-49 win over Mercer University. UConn has met New Mexico only once, defeating the Lobos, 78-56, in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament in Denver, Colorado. The Huskies have also only met George Mason once, bowing to the Patriots in the 2006 NCAA Washington, D.C. Regional Championship (Elite Eight), 86-84, in overtime. BACK IN THE POLLS: UConn is ranked No. 23 in the AP Top 25 and is at the top of the “Others receiving votes” in the ESPN-USA Today poll this week. The Huskies are also No. 18 in the CBSSports.com poll. It is the first time the Huskies have appeared in the AP poll since Jan. 23, 2012, although they were included in “Others receiving votes” in the poll of Jan. 30, 2012. Until the poll of last Jan. 30, the Huskies had been ranked in the AP Top 25 for 28 straight weeks dating back to Nov. 29 of 2010. The 28-week streak was the fifth longest in UConn history. COACHING EXPERIENCE: This may be Kevin Ollie’s first season as the head coach of UConn, but that doesn’t mean that the Huskies’ coaching staff lacks head coaching experience. Between Associate Head Coach Glen Miller, Assistant Coach George Blaney, and Assistant Coach Karl Hobbs, the UConn staff boasts a combined 57 years of head coaching experience and a combined total of 860 victories. Plus, every member of Coach Ollie’s staff --- also including Director of Basketball Administration Kevin Freeman and Assistant Director Ricky Moore --- owns a UConn National Championship ring. DEFEATING THE DEACONS: A 12-0 run midway through the second half, 10 of the points scored by junior Shabazz Napier, propelled UConn from a 52-49 deficit to a 61-52 lead and the Huskies never trailed again in a 77-71 win over Wake Forest in the first round of the Paradise Jam. Napier and sophomore Ryan Boatright (5 assists) each had 16 points to lead the Huskies, while Enosch Wolf had 12 points and 6 rebounds, as well as 2 assists and 2 steals, and DeAndre Daniels also scored 12. Freshman Codi Miller-McIntyre paced Wake Forest with 21 points and C.J. Harris had 17. THE BIG, BAD WOLF: UConn junior center Enosch Wolf had by far the most productive game of his career against Wake Forest in the first round of the Paradise Jam. The 7-footer from Goettingen, Germany, came off the bench to play 25 minutes and contributed 12 points (6-for-6 from the floor), 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals, all career-high totals. HOME COOKIN’: UConn continued its perfect record of home openers at Gampel Pavilion with a 67-49 victory over Vermont on Nov. 13. Since the building opened in 1990, the Huskies have never lost a season opener at Gampel, winning 24 straight. Against Vermont, UConn had a balanced scoring attack, led by junior Shabazz Napier with 13 points, freshman Omar Calhoun with 12, grad student R.J. Evans with 11, and sophomore Ryan Boatright and junior

Tyler Olander with 9 points each. Olander also contributed 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocked shots in a solid all-around performance. QUITE A START: UConn opened the regular-season with a win that shocked the college basketball world, upsetting then-No. 14 Michigan State, 66-62, Friday night in the first Armed Forces Classic on the Ramstein Air Base in southwest Germany. The Huskies came out of the gate on fire, hitting 11 of their first 12 shots and building a 16-point lead before settling for a 40-33 halftime advantage. Michigan State worked its way back in the second half, taking a 58-56 lead with 5:43 remaining. But consecutive threepointers by Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright put UConn in front for good and four straight free throws by Napier in the final 13 seconds sealed the win. Napier led the Huskies with 25 points, while Boatright had 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals, and DeAndre Daniels added 12 points and 8 rebounds. Michigan State was paced by 17 points from Keith Appling, while Branden Dawson had 15 points and 10 rebounds. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE: UConn’s defense has picked up where it left off in the last few games of last season. The Huskies held Michigan State to 37.5 percent shooting for the game, on their way to the 66-62 victory. Against Vermont, the Huskies were even more stingy, holding the Catamounts to 30.0 percent shooting. For the season, UConn is holding opponents to 38.9 percent and 60.7 points per game. UConn held opponents to under 40 percent shooting in three of its final four games last year and 19 times during the season. For the 2011-12 year, the Huskies held opponents 38.6 percent. BLOCK PARTY: The Huskies just might be up to their old tricks when it comes to blocking opponents’ shots. UConn led the nation in blocks for eight straight seasons from 2002-2009. After a bit of a slip in the block statistics in 2009-10 and 2010-11, last year the Huskies finished tied with Syracuse for third in the country in blocks per game (6.9), behind only Kentucky (8.6) and St. Joseph’s (7.2). This season, UConn got off to a big block beginning, swatting away 10 Michigan State shots. For the season, UConn is averaging 7.0 blocks per game. Junior Tyler Olander leads the Huskies in blocked shots at 3.3 per game. CALLED FOR TRAVELING: The UConn basketball team is in the midst of a 15-day stretch to start the 2012-13 season that includes throusands of miles of travel. The Huskies returned on Nov. 10 from a 7,800mile round trip to Ramstein, Germany, where they began regular-season play with a 66-62 upset victory over nationally-ranked

Michigan State. Following the home opener agains Vermont on Nov. 13, UConn boarded another plane two days later for a roughly 1,700-mile trip to St. Thomas of the U.S. Virgin Islands to compete in the 2012 Paradise Jam Tournament. That’s another 3,400 miles in the books, upping the total to about 11,200 miles traveled in just over the first two weeks of the new season. PRESEASON PICK: UConn junior guard Shabazz Napier (Roxbury, Mass.) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Second Team by a vote of the league coaches, announced at BIG EAST Media Day on October 17. UConn was picked ninth in the preseason coaches’ poll. IN-STATE STREAK: UConn has won 66 consecutive games against in-state opponents in the last 26 seasons. The last time an opponent from Connecticut defeated the Huskies was the University of Hartford, 49-48, on Dec. 29, 1986, at the Hartford Civic Center in Jim Calhoun’s first season at UConn. In the past three seasons, however, the Huskies have only played one in-state foe --- Fairfield in the 2011-12 season. Tonight’s game against Quinnipiac will be the first game during the streak that UConn will meet an in-state opponent on a neutral court.

A Look At The 2012-13 Quinnipiac Bobcats

In five years under head coach Tom Moore, Quinnipiac’s trademark feature has been rebounding and the Bobcats have become an annual name among the nation’s leaders in rebounding margin. They have made three consecutive postseason apperarances, including last season in the College Basketball Invitational and have averaged 21 wins a season for the last three years. Once again, the Bobcats are expected to contend for the Northeast Conference title. Quinnipiac has four starters returning from last season’s 18-14 team (10-8 in the Northeast Conference). Leading the returnees is second team All-NEC junior forward Ike Azotam, who is averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, both team highs. Senior guard Dave Johnson is averaging 9.7 points, while forward Jamee Jackson

contributes 9.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, and sophomore guard Zaid Hearst averages 8.9 ppg. The Bobcats are 2-1 on the season, topping Hartford, 65-61, in their season opener as Azotam had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Quinnipiac lost to American University in its second game, 61-55, at home with Azotam and Johnson scoring 11 points apiece. Against Iona in the first round of the Paradise Jam, Quinnipiac withstood a 40-point effort by Iona’s Momo Jones, including a buzzer-beating three-pointer that tied the game, 79-79, and sent it into overtime. The Bobcats took the lead in the extra session and never looked back, eventually winning, 98-92. Azotam paced the Bobcats with 21 points and 10 rebounds, backed by Jackson’s 17 points andf 10 rebounds, Hearst’s 17 points, and 12 from Johnson.

VERSUS CALHOUN ASSISTANTS: The matchup against Quinnipiac and coach Tom Moore will mark the 16th time that the Huskies have faced one of Jim Calhoun’s former assistant coaches. Moore, in his sixth season as the head coach of the Bobcats, was on Calhoun’s staff at UConn for 13 years, the last two (2005-06, 2006-07) serving as Associate Head Coach. UConn is 15-0 in games against former Calhoun assistants. Only one of those games was against Moore’s Quinnipiac team, an 82-49 victory on Dec. 16, 2007, in Moore’s first season as head coach. Overall, the Huskies are 9-0 all-time against Quinnipiac in a series that dates back to 1998-99. Tonight will mark the first time the Huskies and the Bobcats have met on a neutral floor. 2012-2013 University of Connecticut Basketball Media Notes November 16-19, 2012 at U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam UConnHuskies.com

New Man At The Helm

Head Coach Kevin Ollie

No matter when it may have occurred, replacing legendary UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun was going to be an overwhelming challenge. Not only would the incoming coach have to try to fill the shoes of a Hall of Famer and one of the country’s most well-known figures on the sidelines, but he also would be entrusted with maintaining the excellence of a program that had captured three National Championships, made four Final Four appearances, and earned 17 Big East titles in the past 23 years. Kevin Ollie accepted that responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in UConn basketball history. Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. Ollie takes over one of the top college programs in the country after just two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possessing a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl. “After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard. “He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.” The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie. “This is my dream job. I was made for this job,” Ollie said on the day he was hired. “UConn is a special, special place and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but right here.” Ollie made that same decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-BIG EAST pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the BIG EAST Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the BIG EAST, capturing two

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a

never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. “One time, I was cut on Christmas Eve,” said Ollie. “What a Christmas present that was.” Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multiyear contract from “After 13 the Philadelphia 76ers. Fame Coach “He’s a great kid, a great teamJim Calhoun mate, he was great to be around,” Larry Brown, who coached Ollie in Philadelphia, said in a Hartford Courant story about Ollie. “He was a mentor to our young players. Like all of the players I coached who had been with Calhoun, he accepted coaching the right way, he allowed you to make him better.” It was Brown, in fact, whose advice Ollie sought when he was offered the position on Calhoun’s staff in 2010. “I know he was thinking about going back to Oklahoma City [as a player],” said Brown, now the head coach at SMU of the BIG EAST, “and I told him, ‘You know you want to coach eventually. What better opportunity than to go back to your school, and with your coach, who loves you?’ Two years with [Calhoun], Kevin has all the preparation he needs.” Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career, as

he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. Last year culminated in another NCAA appearance and another UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. “Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be all about. When you say that about somebody, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy. Any time you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.” This season, Ollie will use his basketball knowledge as a head coach for the first time, but his coaching philosophy is about more than the game. “I want to get victories, but I also want to present our team the way it should be presented --- with strength, with character, with discipline, with focus, with an appetite and the integrity to get better,” Ollie said. “It’s not about Xs and Os, it’s not about winning and losing, it’s about these men becoming special people. When they leave here, judge me on that.” Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (‘97), and their two children, son Jalen, 16, and daughter Cheyenne, 11.

Glen Miller

Associate Head Coach Beginning his 10th season overall on the UConn staff, and his third since he returned to UConn in 2010-11, Glen Miller will assume the duties of Associate Head Coach under new Head Coach Kevin Ollie. Miller rejoined Coach Jim Calhoun’s UConn staff in 2010-11 as Director of Basketball Administration following 17 years of head coaching experience at Connecticut College, Brown University, and the University of Pennsylvania. Last year, he moved into the role of fulltime assistant coach and was an integral part of practice work, game strategy, and recruiting. Miller’s Division I head coaching experience began at Brown in 1999-2000, where his teams set school records for wins in a two-, three-, four-, and five-year span, as well as most Ivy League wins in a season. He recruited and developed 10 all-conference players and the League’s 2004 Player of the Year. Following seven years in Providence, Miller was hired as head coach of the prestigious program at Penn in 2006. He led the Quakers to the Ivy League Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006-

07, setting the school record for most Ivy League wins by a firstyear coach. He spent three full years and part of a fourth as the Penn head coach. Previous to taking over at Brown, Miller enjoyed a highly-successful span as head coach at Division III Connecticut College. In six seasons, beginning in 1993, Miller led Conn College to unprecedented heights, including a 28-1 record, a No. 3 national ranking, and a berth in the Division III Final Four in 1998-99. In 17 seasons as a head coach, Miller compiled 233 victories. A native of Groton, Conn., where he starred at Fitch High School, Miller played for two seasons at UConn, then played two seasons for Calhoun at Northeastern. He joined Calhoun’s first staff at UConn in 1986 and worked with the Huskies for seven seasons before being named head coach at Conn College in 1993. Born 8/20/1961, Miller and his wife Yvonne reside in Mansfield and are the parents of four children: Tony, Genelle, Jillian (a UConn junior), and Emma.

George Blaney Assistant Coach

Bringing a wealth of coaching experience to Coach Kevin Ollie’s staff, George Blaney is beginning his 12th season at UConn and has logged over 43 years as a college coach. He served as associate head coach for the past five seasons at UConn, taking charge of the team on those occasions when Jim Calhoun was incapacitated. Since Blaney joined UConn, the Huskies have a 278-102 record, captured six BIG EAST championships, made 10 NCAA appearances, three trips to the Final Four, and won two national championships. Blaney, a 2003 inductee into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, brought more than 30 years of coaching experience with him when he came to UConn, including two seasons at Stonehill, three years at Dartmouth, and 22 years at Holy Cross, his alma mater, where he won 357 games, posted seven 20-win seasons, and made eight postseason appearances. He also was head coach for three years at Seton Hall in the BIG EAST before leaving to become the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the International Basketball League. Blaney returned to college coach-

ing in 2000-01 as an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island before joining Calhoun at UConn the following year. In 30 years as a collegiate head coach, Blaney compiled an impressive 461-383 overall record. A native of Jersey City, N.J., Blaney was an All-New England player at Holy Cross, where he scored 1,012 points. After he graduated in 1961, he was drafted in the fourth round of the NBA Draft by the N.Y. Knicks and played the 1961-62 season with the team. Born 11/12/1939, Blaney and his wife Maryellen have two daughters and three sons, and five grandchildren.

• Kevin Ollie is the first new head coach at UConn in 26 years and only the 4th UConn coach in the last 43 years.

Hobbs had spent the previous 10 years as the head coach at George Washington University, leading the Colonials to two Atlantic 10 Tournament championships, a regularseason title, and five straight postseason appearances, including three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths. He was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2005-06, and notched 166 wins while at GWU. Hobbs began his coaching career as a sixyear assistant at Boston University before joining Calhoun’s UConn staff. While Hobbs was at UConn, he was instrumental in the recruitment of such Husky stars as Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler, and Emeka Okafor. The Huskies had a record of 216-56 while Hobbs was on the staff. Out of Roxbury, Mass., Hobbs was named Massachusetts Schoolboy Player of the Year in 1979-80 after leading Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School to the state high school championship. Hobbs was a four-year starting point guard for UConn (1980-84), where he served as team captain and was an All-BIG EAST selection as a senior. He led the team in assists all four years and still ranks fifth on the all-time list. Born 8/7/1961, Hobbs and wife JoAnn are the parents of two daughters, RaShauna and Kaliah.

• The UConn coaching staff has a combined 57 years of head coaching experience with 860 wins. • Every member of Coach Ollie’s staff owns a UConn National Championship ring.
