George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex The University of Connecticut lacrosse program plays its home games at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, a $3.7 million athletic facility located adjacent to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the heart of UConn’s main campus in Storrs. The 2007 season marked the first year that the Huskies played all their games on the turf, after years of splitting time at the grass field in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. A financial gift of more than $650,000 to UConn’s Athletic Development Fund by Lottie K. Sherman of West Hartford helped provide the necessary funding for the project. The entire complex bears the name of Lottie K. Sherman’s husband, George J. Sherman. Opened during the 1995-96 academic year, the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex features a new Astroturf 12 field and watering system that was installed during the summer of 2008. The new surface gives UConn lacrosse and field hockey programs one of the finest on-campus collegiate facilities in the nation. The complex also includes an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track surface, as well as seating for 2,000 fans, full-field lighting to permit night games, a press box and a scoreboard with electronic message capabilities. Before the start of the 2010 season the lacrosse locker room in the Hugh S. Greer Field House was renovated, giving each student-athlete their own locker with enclosed storage spaces.

Hugh S. Greer Mark R. Shenkmen & Field House Training Center Weight Room Thanks to alumnus Mark R. Shenkman, the University of Connecticut has joined the ranks of major universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that is utilized by all the varsity sport teams and also by recreational services. The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the country. Featuring a 120-yard long state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area and state-of-the-art video capabilities, the indoor training center provides all the varsity teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment. The UConn lacrosse team has the use of two different weight rooms in Gampel Pavilion along with the Field House Weight Room. All of the facilities feature custom made multi-use racks with platforms, dumbbell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.

HEADStrong Foundation The Huskies were one of 15 teams to raise $42,000 in the 2nd Annual Nick Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic which took place at Hofstra University on September 25, 2010. The tournament helps bring awareness to the HEADStrong Foundation which is committed to finding a cure for all blood cancers and supporting those who are affected by the disease. The foundation is dedicated to its founder Nicholas Colleluori and was started in 2005, with the foundation’s primary color of lime green being used to represent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Friends Of Jaclyn UConn once again participated in a Friends of Jaclyn event, competing in the FOJ Playday that was held back in October. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a nonprofit, charitable organization that works to improve the life of children suffering from pediatric brain tumors and their families, while also helping raise funds for research.

Huskies In The Community Husky Reach The University of Connecticut lacrosse team strives to consistently make a positive impact off the field and outside of the classroom, contributing to several community organizations. Different community service initiatives that the Huskies participate in throughout the year include Nutmeg Big BrothersBig Sisters, teaching children around Connecticut about lacrosse, and volunteering for Husky Sport, a program to promote physical fitness and good nutrition. As part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee the lacrosse team also sponsors a variety of collection drives for food, toys and coats to support charities in the local area.

Katie Woods will begin her second season at the helm of the University of Connecticut lacrosse team in 2012. In her first season in 2011, Woods guided the Huskies to a 9-7 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Under her tutelage, M.E. Lapham had a record-setting season, notching 55 goals to set the UConn season mark. Lapham also went on to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors and was later selected to the IWLCA All-Region First Team. Woods joined UConn Country as the head women’s lacrosse coach in 2011 after serving in the same role for the previous four years at American University. During her time at American, the Eagles collected 23 all-conference selections, five Patriot League Player of the Year honors and 72 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades. Following the 2008 season Woods was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 5-1 record in league play and a share of the regular season championship. In 2007, her first season as head coach at American, Woods led the Eagles to a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2003 and matched the record for most victories for a first-year head coach. Woods amassed 26 wins in four seasons as head coach at American including 12 in league play, and led her team to the championship game of the Patriot League tournament during both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Before Woods joined the American coaching staff she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Brown University in 2005 and `06. At Brown she coached the offensive unit and assisted in coaching the goalkeepers. Woods oversaw the recruiting operations for all prospective student-athletes and served as the area recruiting coordinator for the New England region. During the 2004 season Woods was the first assistant at Cornell where she worked with the attack and aided in player development. With the Big Red she also planned team travel and was responsible for recruiting and film breakdown. Prior to her time at Cornell, Woods served as an assistant coach at Davidson for the 2003 season where she helped plan practices and organized recruiting efforts in addition to coaching during contests. Woods also spent a year at Ithaca College in 2002 as a graduate assistant coach for both women’s soccer and lacrosse. While at Ithaca, she earned her master’s in exercise and sports sciences. Woods was a two-sport athlete at Drew, where she played lacrosse and soccer. She was a four-time AllConference selection in lacrosse, also picking up two Regional All-American and one National All-America award. Woods also excelled in the classroom as a twotime Scholar Athlete award winner. She graduated with a degree in psychology in May 2001. Woods is a 1997 graduate of South Windsor High School where she played soccer, basketball and lacrosse.

Chelsea Gamble begins her first season at the University of Connecticut in 2012. She brings a wealth of experience to the team, having played Division I lacrosse at George Mason University until her graduation in 2011. Gamble captained the squad for three seasons and was named the 2011 Division I College Player of the Year for South Jersey. Other honors include being named a 2011 IWLCA/Under Armour North/South Senior All Star as well as being part of the 2008 CAA Championship All-Tournament Team. Off the field, Gamble worked as an early elementary assistant teacher for a year and as the head coach of South Jersey Select Lacrosse for the past three years. She has also served as the Recruiter Coordinator for the Tri-State Summer Lacrosse Festival since 2008 and as a counselor at various camps run by Stanford, Nike Top of the Class, Moorestown Select and other women’s lacrosse programs.

Harrington will begin her first season with Connecticut in 2012. A 2007 graduate of the College of William and Mary, she most recently served as an assistant coach at Dickinson College where she was responsible for assisting with all aspects of the program, including recruiting and scouting, managing practices and implementing game day tactics. Harrington also specialized as the Defensive Coordinator for Dickinson, implementing all defensive sets and developing both individual and team defensive skills among the players. In addition, she directed the team’s youth clinics and organized community outreach programs between the team and the local YWCA. Prior to her time at Dickinson, Harrington spent two years in England where she served as the Head of Lacrosse at St. Albans High School for Girls and as a School Coaching Official at St. Helen’s School. Harrington also played lacrosse while in Europe, competing in several tournaments including the Blues Lacrosse Tournament, the largest club level lacrosse tournament in the United Kingdom. She also participated in the Berlin Open Lacrosse Tournament as well as the Amsterdam Lowlands Lacrosse Tournament. As a collegiate athlete, Harrington helped lead the William and Mary Tribe to the CAA tournament twice. She was also given the team’s Academic Achievement Award and the 2007 “Work Horse” Award, voted on by all teammates to recognize the individual who, leading by example, pushes herself and thus her team to higher achievements.

Dean’s List & Honor Roll Twenty members of the 2011 Connecticut lacrosse squad were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team including 14 current members of the 2012 roster. In addition to the team’s individual academic accolades, the women’s lacrosse team has been honored seven times by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an IWLCA Academic Squad. To earn the distinction, the team must have earned greater than a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Kristen Haldeman concluded her Connecticut career in 2005 as the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior goalie graduated with a 3.92 GPA in biomedical engineering following her first season in the starting lineup to earn the honor. Twenty-four UConn lacrosse juniors and seniors have also been individually recognized by the IWLCA as Academic All-Americans since 2002, earning a GPA of 3.5 or better. The BIG EAST Conference The 2011-12 academic year is the 33rd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2011-12 year marks the conference’s seventh straight with the same 16-member group, making for the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2010-11 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, while 22 earned Capital One Academic All-America recognition. Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation’s top female student-athlete and was chosen as the Capital One Academic All-America of the Year.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut men’s basketball team won its third national championship, completing a magical run through five games of the BIG EAST Championship and six wins in the NCAA tournament. The Villanova women’s cross country team won the NCAA title for the second straight year and the ninth time overall. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team won its third NCAA title, while BIG EAST teams reached national championship games in women’s basketball (Notre Dame) and men’s soccer (Louisville).

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the second time in the last three years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Indianapolis, capping a season in which the Huskies extended their NCAA-record winning streak to 90 games. Individually, BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships, including an unprecedented four by Villanova’s Sheila Reid. Reid was the 2010 individual cross country champion, a member of the Wildcats’ winning indoor distance medley relay team and won the 5,000- and 1,500-meter titles in outdoor track & field. Louisville’s Matt Hughes, meanwhile, repeated as the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Moore and Reid joined Notre Dame soccer standout Melissa Henderson as winners of Honda Sports Awards as the top performers in their respective sports. Moore also became the first three-time winner of the Wade Trophy as the nation’s top women’s basketball player and joined Villanova lacrosse player Brian Karalunas as winners of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Connecticut claimed the league’s Bowl Championship Series bid for the first time as the Huskies shared the conference title with Pittsburgh and West Virginia. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record for the second straight year. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 133 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2010-11. Most recently Georgetown women’s cross country crown in the fall of 2011.

Department of Sports Medicine

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine team is spearheaded by UConn Director of Sports Medicine Jeffrey Anderson, MD, and UConn Team Physician Thomas Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine specialists for the team include Edward Collins, MD, in Willimantic and Michael Joyce, MD, of the Orthopaedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Barry Messinger, MD, of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester; and Robert Arciero, MD, and Kevin Shea, MD, of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the UConn sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 600 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut Strength & Conditioning plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky players areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn student-athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training, and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. The staff supervises a strength and conditioning program for each Evan Feinglass Kim Gibbons Megan Hastillo individual athlete all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order Program Aide Director of Event Equipment Manager to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each Management player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning, and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each lacrosse player. The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past four years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaison to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet as well as reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library. Writing tutors are available each weeknight in the CPIA office. CPIA also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon request. A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn lacrosse program is Ingrid Hohmann. Hohmann monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree. The goal for each Husky student-athlete is to earn a degree so they can become a success in whatever field they choose.

Consensus All-American Kemba Walker and the men’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship and made the customary trip to the White House.

ATHLETICS It was a remarkable year for UConn Athletics in 2010-2011. The men’s basketball team won its third NCAA Championship in school history and, in the process, UConn became the first school to ever advance to a BCS bowl game and both the men’s and women’s NCAA Final Four in the same academic year. UConn sponsors a total of 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won 11 national championships since 1990 and has won 100 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships.

Danielle Cecco became the first UConn’s women’s diver in history to qualify for an NCAA Championship.

The UConn men’s track and field team hit the “BIG EAST Double” as it won both the indoor and outdoor championships.

n Wednesday, June 29, 2011, the Mansfield Downtown Partnership joined with the Town of Mansfield, the University of Connecticut, and Storrs Center master developer LeylandAlliance, LLC and their partner Education Realty Trust (EDR) in welcoming Mansfield residents and friends in celebrating the ceremonial groundbreaking of Storrs Center. Governor Dannel P. Malloy, United States Congressman Joe Courtney, Secretary of State Denise Merrill, State Senator Don Williams, State Representative Gregory Haddad, Mansfield Mayor Elizabeth Paterson, UConn President Susan Herbst, and Mansfield Downtown Partnership Board President Philip Lodewick addressed the crowd of over three hundred who gathered at the intersection of Dog Lane and Storrs Road (Route 195) in Mansfield. Mansfield resident and current UConn student Spencer Hamlin performed the National Anthem to begin the ceremony. Following remarks from the visiting officials, the ceremonial groundbreaking took place near the site of the first building to be constructed as part of the future downtown. Storrs Center, which has been in planning and development for almost ten years, will be a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented town center located within an easy walking distance of the UConn Storrs campus, Mansfield’s Town Hall and Community Center, and E. O. Smith High School. The new downtown will host a wide variety of shops, restaurants, offices, and cafés, along with new residential options, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. The new, market-rate residential units will appeal to young professionals, empty nesters, faculty, graduate students, and other residents of the area – anyone who desires a quality lifestyle in an upscale town center with all of the social and cultural advantages found near one of the nation’s top universities. Storrs Center has been planned as an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable downtown that combines residential, commercial, civic, and recreational uses within a walkable area. Of the nearly fifty acre site, only about fifteen acres will be developed (twelve acres of which were previously developed). The remaining acreage will be set aside as a conservation area,

which abuts the Whetten Woods, a preserved area held by Joshua’s Tract Conservation and Historic Trust. An intermodal transportation center, adjacent to the new parking garage, will accommodate buses, shared cars, electric cars, and bicycles. Mansfield residents and visitors will have convenient access to many amenities without needing to make multiple car trips. The first phase of Storrs Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, will be located north of Dog Lane, near Buckley residential hall, and will include 127 apartments and 27,000 square feet of commercial space.
