Head Coach Bob Goldberg 25th Season • Record: 333-123-3 University of Connecticut head coach Bob Goldberg is in his 25th season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. While it is normal to think that coaching the past 24 years at UConn and more than 40 years overall may diminish some of the excitement and energy of Goldberg… just the opposite happens to be true. The energy and excitement for this team, the school and this sport is as high as it has ever been within the coach and there are high hopes and expectations for this upcoming season. Goldberg believes it is the unique way in which he approaches his job that helps him maintain his enthusiasm. “I have never felt that I simply coach swimming,” says Goldberg. “I feel that I am fortunate to coach a bunch of great studentathletes every year who happen to be swimmers, and help them get through their years in college successfully in the pool, in the classroom and along their road in life.” There are several philosophies and principles that are inherent to the basic foundations on which the UConn program has been run under Goldberg. First is the matter of consistency: “In whatever we do, I believe that maintaining a consistent work ethic is fundamental to success. Whether it is in the pool, classroom or in life’s social relationships, being consistent in what you do and how you do it most often leads to being productive, and when you are productive that ultimately leads you to success”. Goldberg’s team has been consistent winners for a long period of time in all phases at UConn. The team has had a winning record in the pool every year since the 1988-89 season as well as always one of the schools highest team GPA’s and yearly recognition by the College Coaches Association as an All-Academic Team every year Goldberg has been at UConn. Second is the issue of focus: “I am constantly reminding the team to focus on their swimming when in the pool and on their school work when hitting the books. Don’t worry about an exam in the middle of practice time and in the middle of a tough set, and don’t dream about your best swims when you are in class or studying,” says Goldberg. “Do one thing at a time and do it really well!” A third and very important aspect is loyalty and commitment: “Being loyal and supportive to your teammates, team, coaches, families and university helps keep us grounded in good principles. It helps us maintain a proper perspective and a total commitment to what we are doing every day in our lives.” Lastly, understand respect in a student’s role as a member of a swimming and academic community. “Be respectful to coaches, teachers, classmates, teammates and all you come in contact with. Approaching all the things we do every day with an understanding and respect for all those who have come before us, those who will come after us, and all those we deal with every day. This will result in an atmosphere that will give our swimmers their best chance for success”. Academic success has been a cornerstone of Goldberg’s teams. The women’s teams have been recognized every year by the College Swim Coaches for their academic record of excellence never having a team GPA fall below 3.0 in 24 years under Goldberg. The men have now risen to that level also. In the spring of 2012 the UConn men were ranked 13th in the country in team GPA, nearing a 3.3 team average overall. “We are always talking with the team about the importance of our team ‘study groups’, team academic goals, working to have our successful upperclassmen to be involved with the freshmen as peer advisors, and we are fortunate to have developed a great relationship with our swimming advisor from the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes,” says Goldberg. “That has developed a tradition and expectation of quality academic performance for both our teams.” Athletic success has also been inherent in the program under Goldberg. “There are no records on our record board that are old records,” says Goldberg. “It seems every year we swim faster and faster, and wonder how those records can ever be broken, but then the next year we come back and break a whole bunch of those same records and start all over again! Certainly technology, recruiting, training and

facilities play a role in what we do, but the real reality is that we have great assistant coaches that work really hard, and a great group of athletes with a lot of potential that we have recruited to be here. In my mind that is a winning combination, and a combination that brings success.” Goldberg has spent his entire professional life in aquatics. “Growing up in a YMCA and being in the pool every day, working my way up as a lifeguard, camp counselor, swim instructor and team member and coach had set the career path for me very early on,” says Goldberg. “Then a great high school experience with Coach Al Huston, followed by a great college experience with renowned Coach Charles Silvia and Coach Charlie Smith, all icons in the sport, all became great personal mentors to me. Fifteen years coaching at Penn State, three years as Aquatic Director at NC State and now 24 years completed as Head Coach at UConn have defined my career. There are few phases of aquatics that I have not been involved with, from Scuba to Synchro, from Diving to Learn to Swim, from Sailing to building Olympic sized pools, I have seen, done and been involved in it all. It has been a great experience, and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunities to be involved with so many great people as peers, mentors and as athletes. Clearly to me, while swimming has been the venue, it is the people who have been part of it that has made it a rewarding career!” While there has been a lot that has been done, Goldberg feels there is still much to accomplish at UConn, a great university that is entering into a new phase with a new athletic administration, great athletic and academic facilities and progressive central administration. “I want to continue to field a team that can represent the university on a national and international level in swimming and continue to bring credit to our program,” says Goldberg. “We work hard to recruit the best students and best athletes we can find who can help us continue to build our program. With continued strong support from our university we can strive to become a major player in our sport”. Goldberg is originally from Watertown, Mass., and graduated from Springfield College and then went on to receive a master’s degree from Penn State. His professional work experience includes high school teaching and coaching, 15 years coaching at Penn State along with a tenured faculty appointment in physical education, three years as Director of Aquatics and teaching faculty at North Carolina State University. He is married to Alyce (Parrish) Goldberg and they have three married children; David living in Austin Texas, Scott living in Cincinnati Ohio and Sarah living in Connecticut. They have six grandchildren; Vanessa, Victoria, Zachary, Keeley, Fisher and newly arrived Charlie.

Head Diving Coach John Bransfield 15th Season University of Connecticut diving coach John Bransfield is in his 15th year with the program. Bransfield was named the 2012 BIG EAST Women’s Diving Coach of the Year and Husky divers have advanced to NCAA national championship action in each of the past three seasons. In March 2012, current Husky Danielle Cecco put UConn on the scoreboard at the NCAA Championships in her second consecutive trip to the meet. She is a twotime NCAA Zone champion in the three meters. UConn divers have also won NCAA Zone titles in each of the past three years as Stephen Ferreira won the three meters in 2010. Three other UConn divers scored at the BIG EAST Conference championship last season. Grant Fecteau was a finalist in both events while Kelly McCauley (three meters) and Nicole Borriello (one meter) were consolation finalists. Four UConn divers qualified to compete at the NCAA Zone Championships in 2012, with Fecteau joining Cecco in the finals. Bransfield has coached several national qualifiers including a four-time NCAA Division II Champion. In 2003, Melissa Kull became the first Connecticut diver to compete at the NCAA national championship. Developing champions is not something new to Bransfield. In his 35 years of

Mitch Dansky Assistant Coach Mitch Dansky, a 2012 UConn graduate and a former swimming student-athlete, is in his first season as an assistant coach. Dansky spent the summer of 2012 coaching at the Southern Methodist University swim camp, where he assisted in developing athletes’ swimming abilities and creating dry land. Dansky also has experience coaching with the Greenwood Memorial Swim Club (Gardner, Mass.), where he assisted in coaching the age group team as well as the national team which included three athletes who competed at the 2012 Olympic Trials. After his swimming career, Dansky spent the rest of his senior year as an intern with the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams as he assisted with the spring practices. Dansky was a BIG EAST finalist in all four years in the 1650-yard freestyle and was elected team captain his senior year. A BIG EAST All-Academic pick, Dansky still holds spots in the schools’ top 10 times in the 1650-yard and 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard IM. A native of Winchendon, Mass., Dansky earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in political science.

coaching, he has had many conference champions and at least one conference champion at each and every school that he has worked at, including Army, Maine, Springfield and Northern Michigan. Bransfield’s background extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving. He enjoyed many years of success with U.S. Diving as a Junior Olympic coach and in 1988 to work with two U.S Olympic Coaches. A current member of the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee, Bransfield has considerable experience with diving off the pool deck as well. In 1992, he was appointed as a Regional Technical Director of United States Diving, and while at Army, hosted numerous clinics for U.S Diving Coaches. In 1998, he served as the Competition Manager of the Goodwill Games in New York. Bransfield has taught numerous coaching clinics for Grass Roots fundamentals, Spotting Training and Safety Certification and has twice served previously on the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee. In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’s Republic of China. The opportunity allowed him to closely observe the training programs at two Provincial sites and attend the Asian Junior Championships. Bransfield is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., where he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College. He earned a master’s at Northern Michigan and continued to study biomechanics while at Springfield College. Bransfield and his wife, Ginny, have four sons, and presently reside in Storrs.

Janelle Atkinson-Wignall Assistant Coach Janelle Atkinson-Wignall is in her third year as an assistant coach at UConn, primarily working with the distance and middle distance freestylers and serving as the recruiting coordinator for the women’s team. In her short stint, she has coached the Huskies to rewriting the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle records for both the men’s and women’s teams and has assisted in six of ten relay records, as well as the men’s 200 and 400 IM records. The 1999-2000 National High School Swimmer of the Year, Atkinson-Wignall earned 10 All-America honors while competing at the University of Florida. She also received three First Team All-Southeastern Conference accolades, had three top-three finishes in three years at the NCAA Championships and was a three-time SEC Champion. Atkinson-Wignall was also part of the 2002 team that became SEC Champions and was on the SEC Academic Honor Roll four times. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Atkinson-Wignall is a two-time Olympian competing in the 2000 Sydney, Australia and 2004 Athens, Greece Games. She finished fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and ninth in the 800-meter freestyle in Sydney. For the 2012 London Olympic Games, she returned home and served as a sport analyst on television during the swimming portion of the games which aired throughout the entire Caribbean. In 2002, the Jamaica native won a pair of bronze medals in the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle events at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, England. In 2001, Atkinson-Wignall claimed a silver medal in the 800-meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 400-meter freestyle event at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. She was a triple silver medalist (200, 400 and 800-meter freestyle) at the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, and took part in the 2003 Games in the Dominican Republic. She is a seven-time recipient of the Jamaican Swimmer of the Year award and a six-time nominee for the Jamaican Sportswoman of the Year. Before joining the Huskies, Atkinson-Wignall spent four seasons at Wright State, coaching the distance group and directing the fundraising swim lesson program. Before WSU, she worked a year as a community relations officer for the Jamaica Information Service, a subsidiary of the Embassy of Jamaica, in Washington, D.C., and was an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University before that. On the international scene, Atkinson-Wignall was selected as the head coach for the Jamaican National Team at the 2009 Swimming World Championships in Rome, Italy. Atkinson-Wignall earned a bachelor’s degree in tourism and hospitality management from the University of Florida in 2005.

eteran head coach Bob Goldberg and the entire UConn coaching staff feel that the 2012-13 University of Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team could be one of the best teams the program has ever had. With graduating only three swimmers, the team returns many of the important swimmers from the past year and adds eight freshmen who will complete the team. The senior class features four outstanding swimmers headed by Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.). Yoon is one of the best sprinters to ever come through the doors at UConn and makes his presence felt in the free, fly and breaststroke events. Yoon has incredible natural speed and has been a championship finalist at the conference level every year and last season won the 100-yard freestyle at the Pitt Invitational. Nick Cerra (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) has made a remarkable recovery from his freshman season when he was out of the water with a broken wrist. This year looks to be his best in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly as well as his IM. In addition, Cerra continues a swimmers’ tradition by serving as President of SAAC (Student Athletes Advisory Council). Joe Glowacki (Erie, Pa.) is another key flier for the Huskies evenly matched with Cerra. Together they give the Huskies a solid 1-2 punch in that event. The final senior is Sean Cook (Doylestown, Pa.), who has been the proverbial ‘jack of all trades’ for the Huskies. He is solid in both backstrokes as well as sprint to mid-distance freestyle. Together these four swimmers provide a lot of leadership for UConn. On the diving side, there are two senior performers. Grant Fecteau (Delmar, N.Y.) finished fifth in the one-meter and seventh in the threemeter last season at the BIG EAST Championship. He also finished in the top eight of each event at the NCAA Zone championship. Fecteau has plenty of natural ability and works hard looking to make an advance on both championships with a refined focus. He has the potential to be in the hunt for an invitation to NCAA nationals. Anthony Cortright (Wallingford, Conn.) is only in his third year in the sport and has made tremendous strides. He is a former gymnast, who has explosive moves. With improved boardwork, Cortright has the competitive edge to make the finals at the BIG EAST Conference Championships and compete well at the NCAA Zone meet. The juniors are led by Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.) who is the main backstroke threat for UConn, but always makes his presence felt on relays in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle. Sean Battle (Allison Park, Pa.) is another junior who is key for the Huskies and who made great competitive

strides last season. Ben Yacano (Glen Allen, Va.) is a solid butterflier who is challenged to bring his long course time to the 25-yard course in helping the Huskies be competitive. While a junior, Justyn Alexandre (Wallingford, Conn.) is only in his second season swimming after redshirting his first year on campus. He has made some big improvements in his backstroke last year and has shown real speed in sprint butterfly. Both Chris Alvanos (Chester Springs, Pa.) and Zack Coleman (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) are challenged with rehabbing injuries in order to become competitive this season. The sophomore class is led by Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria), who had a remarkable first season for the Huskies. He swam well for the Huskies all season then established the 200-yard breaststroke record at the conference meet in February. Capping off a great year, he won his first Bulgarian National Championship in breaststroke this past summer. Giving UConn a strong 1-2 punch in breaststroke is teammate and classmate Wyatt Boliek (Greenville, S.C.). He also had a strong first season at UConn, then went home and swam his best ever long course times this summer in preparation for his sophomore year with the Huskies. Luke Zalewski (Burlington, Conn.) experienced a successful transition as a freshman from sprint and mid-distance swimmer to a quality miler at the conference meet. He should be even stronger this year. The final second year swimmer is Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.), who has a great deal of potential in several events. His record setting swims in the 400-yard IM and mile at the BIG EAST Conference meet are indications of good things ahead for him. The freshmen are an exciting group who can be real positive forces for the Huskies. London Olympian Diguan Pigot (Miami, Fla.) adds to the Huskies incredible team of breaststrokers, but his abilities include every stroke and a solid IM. Another potential impact swimmer is Mike Lennon (Williston Park, N.Y.). Fresh off the 2012 United States Olympic trials, his distance free is impressive along with strokes and IM’s. YMCA National finalist Greg Baliko (Fanwood, N.J.) is another IM’er and breaststoker, who can swim many events. Sprinter Jeff Flynn (Absecon, N.J.) adds depth and potential on the short free and fly events. Jeff Magin (Brookfield, Conn.) comes to UConn following in his brother Bill’s footsteps. Bill capped a great UCONN career as team captain and is now in med school. Jeff appears to have championship level speed in the backstroke events. Another sprinter who will contribute is Jeandre Pretorius (Maitland, Fla.), a native of South Africa and competed this summer in the Olympic Trials. The final freshman is Ryan Walsh (Monroe, N.Y.), who is multi-talented in several events including butterfly and backstroke. This group presents a solid core of swimmers who will be factors for the Huskies for the next several years. On the diving side, John Brice (Bala Cynwood, Pa.) had a very solid Junior Olympic career and has a tremendous sense of how to get in the water from any which way. With hard work on fundamentals, Brice should compete for top spots at the BIG EAST Championship, as well as make the finals at the NCAA Zone championship. There are scoring threats in every event and potential conference championship swimmers in several events. Following the Huskies men this season will be fun with so much talent and youth on the team. The key will be each member of the group taking their responsibility to train hard and swim fast in their spots. If they are able to do that they will certainly add up to a very strong team.

s has been the case for the past 24 years under head coach Bob Goldberg, the University of Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team will pose a serious challenge to every team they swim this year with versatile swimmers in every class and in every event. “There are a lot of swimmers on our team in each class and in each event that are leaders in and out of the pool,” said Goldberg. “We have been fortunate at UConn to identify and recruit great student-athletes to complete our team. They work hard, swim fast, do well in school and are a joy to be around.” The senior class will be counted on as the leaders in every respect. Heading this class is Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.), who was a top recruit four years ago and who has lived up to her promise with a remarkable career. She is the school record holder in four individual events as well as three relays and is a consistent threat at in-season meets and a major factor at the BIG EAST Conference Championships. The NCAA’s are within Bowen’s reach this season. Mary deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) is another freestyler who can also double in butterfly and IM. “She is so versatile, it is difficult to know Mary’s best events”, said Goldberg. Along with Bowen and deMarrais is the team’s third captain Kate O’Leary (Brookfield, Conn.). “Coming from walk-on to scholarship swimmer, Kate leads by a ‘work hard’ example in everything she does, and an example that shows success through motivation and determination,” says Goldberg. Kim Fleming (Mississauga, Ont.) is another talented swimmer who is best in backstroke. “Kim has been under 56 seconds and 2:00 in the backstrokes and hopes to be there again at season’s end,” says Goldberg. Isabelle Nat (Barrie, Ont.) is a quick and quality freestyler who is best in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyles and loves to perform under pressure. Nat always comes through in close races. The final senior is Kate Dobler (Pittsford, N.Y.), who also has had a remarkable career, breaking the 1:50 barrier twice last season at the BIG EAST Conference. “I believe she can go even faster this year and post a 1:47 or 1:48 in her 200 freestyle,” says Goldberg.

UConn has two highly-decorated senior divers. Danielle Cecco (Hicksville, N.Y.) was the BIG EAST Champion last year in the onemeter and runner-up in the three-meter. She also defended her three-meter NCAA Zone championship as well. Cecco scored at the NCAA National Championships and is looking to further refine skills in boardwork and entries to have another terrific year. Nicole Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) finished tenth in the BIG EAST Conference on the one-meter last year. She has an incredible work ethic and is striving for consistency to reach career peaks this year. She has All the potential to make finals on both boards at Conference and Zone championships this season. The juniors, while not imposing in size, are also very talented. They are led by Kati Kyle (Lithia, Fla.), who has been an incredibly solid and reliable backstroker. “She is as good in the 50-yard backstroke leading off a relay as she is in the 200 back and always can pull out a close race” said Goldberg. “She has great turns and underwaters.” Catie Chang (Savage, Minn.) is a versatile swimmer, who can be used in the IM’s, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle. She adds great quality depth to the team. Sharon Scott (Shelton, Conn.) hopes to continue to develop into a solid contributor for the Huskies. The sophomores are led by Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.), who is already building a great swimming resume. She holds the UConn 50-yard freestyle record, was All-BIG EAST Conference selection as a freshman and has swum in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games representing her native Suriname. In the 2012 London games, she was selected to carry their national flag in opening ceremonies. Holly Gallagher (Haddon Township, N.J.) is in a position to take over the lead butterfly spot for UConn, posting a solid 2:02 last year and looking to go faster. Kate Munzenmaier (Lake George, N.Y.) has developed into an all-around swimmer with her best events appearing to be the 200-yard IM and 200-yard freestyle. Hannah Perna (Hillsborough, N.J.) backs up the distance group but has shown real promise in the 200-yard butterfly. Caryn Smith (Huntington, N.Y.) is a solid sprinter who adds depth and spirit to the sprint crew. The freshman always present a new look for the team and new challenges for the coaches to develop them. A late addition to the Huskies, Laura Hyland (Southport, England) appears to be a real quality find. She has great potential in the breaststroke events and has shown remarkable ability in the freestyle. Rachel Burke (Wayne, Ill.) is another newcomer who has the coaches excited. She can become a major factor for the Huskies in all the freestyle events and will impact the relays. Laura Ruttan (Stittsville, Ont.) will join Hyland in the breaststroke events and they look to give the Huskies a solid freshmen scoring punch. Connecticut natives Caitlin Cole (Trumbull, Conn.) will add greatly to the UConn distance lane as will Alexis Henry (Old Saybrook, Conn.) in the sprints. Emily Boyko (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) in the butterfly and Marston Fries (Mission Hills, Kansas) in the freestyle are solid additions for the Huskies and Kennedy Meier (Winnipeg, Man.) and Kristen Goodson (Fort Myers, Fla.) are impressive in early training in the backstroke events. In diving, Taryn Urbanus (Quincy, Mass.) has a strong background in high school and possesses great natural ability in her moves and graceful lines. She has a great attitude, is willing to work hard and has the potential to score at the BIG EAST Championship in her first year, as well as qualify for the Zone Meet. The UConn women have had a very long and strong history of team success in the pool and in the classroom that should continue to be enhanced this year. They look to continue their incredible academic success which has become legendary on campus. In the pool with their strong leadership in the senior class along with the large infusion of young swimmers and a very solid group of sophomores and juniors, the Huskies will be exciting to watch.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT WOLFF-ZACKIN NATATORIUM 2012-13 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

he Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. The 39,000-square foot natatorium provides one of the finest facilities on the East Coast. Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are the only varsity programs housed in the facility. The Natatorium was built in part of the university’s $28 million Sports Center Complex, which also includes the 171,000-square foot Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, home to the UConn men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. It features several high-tech innovations making the pool one of the fastest in the region. The facility is a 50-meter “stretch pool” that includes two moveable bulkheads, allowing the pool to assume several different configurations. The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deepwater course in the Wolff-Zackin pool, featuring eight-foot wide lanes and a flow-through bulkhead. A second bulkhead provides an enclosed warm-up and warm-diving area, while also allowing for a separate diving area. The diving area includes two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards mounted on concrete. A dry board and trampoline with spotting rigs, and one and three-meter boards with rigs over the top makes for excellent training. Some of the other features of the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium include a state-of-the-art Colorado Electronic Timing System V, men’s and women’s team record boards, a videotape replay system and an underwater viewing window. In addition, there are individual coaches’ offices, men’s and women’s varsity locker rooms and visiting team locker rooms. The spectator area can accommodate 800 Husky fans. Adjacent to the Natatorium is Brundage Pool which is available to UConn coach Goldberg and his staff to enhance the Husky training program. Between the two pools, the Huskies have 18 lanes available to them for training purposes.

Men’s Pool Records

The $14 million remodeling of Connecticut’s athletic facilities included complete renovation of Brundage Pool, extending and expanding the great facilities UConn has to offer its swimming and diving programs. The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium houses a terrific training facility for divers on the UConn team. There are two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards on shorts stands, with a spotting rig above each level. On deck, there is a dry board and a trampoline, each with a spotting rig, along with two state-of-theart camera/Tivo systems and flat screen televisions for each side. As part of the remodeled athletic complex project, UConn swimmers have the use of a new, state-of-the-art 6,000-square foot weight room, featuring all of the latest in strength and conditioning equipment. The Huskies also have daily access to a spacious athletic training facility with the latest technology for rehabilitating athletic injuries.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

he strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn swimming and diving athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. Each program is manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress in strength, power, anaerobic conditioning and flexibility. This format provides the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each swimming and diving athlete.

COUNSELING PROGRAM FOR INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETES

stablished in 1986, the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) provides comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. In her second year working with the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs is Lindsay Darcy. Darcy recently joined the UConn staff from Manhattan College. Darcy earned a bachelor’s degree from Syracuse in 2005. She was a four-year letterwinner for Linda Darcy the Orange field hockey team, and earned BIG CPIA Counselor EAST Scholar-Athlete selection all four years. In 2001, she earned All-America honors and at the conclusion of her final season with the Orange, Darcy was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Darcy monitors student-athlete academic performance, counsels individuals regarding major and career options, facilitates registration in courses that accommodate practice times while ensuring progress toward a degree, coordinator tutor support and assists student-athletes in the developing of learning and time management skills. The University of Connecticut swimming and diving team takes great pride in the academic and leadership accomplishments of its team members. The women’s team consistently has been recognized for academic excellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover (2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest award recognizing academic and athletic achievement and improvement, service, leadership, perseverance, and character). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last eight Kinsman Awards, with Craig Orski winning in 2003 and Bobby Folan in 2005 and Tristan Jones in 2007. Folan was also selected by the NCAA as the sole UConn representative to its 2005 Leadership Conference.

he Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic Walter Trisdale performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care. The team is spearheaded by Robert Howard, MA, ATC, the Head Athletic Trainer. Walter Trisdale is in his first year of handling the day-today training needs of the UConn men’s and women’s swimming and diving team. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Director of Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Specialists for the team include: Dr. Michael Joyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. Robert Arciero, Dr. Thomas DeBerardino, and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of the New England Musculoskeletal Institute at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of student-athletes. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have access to the best medical support and health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

Community Service and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are highly-involved in the SAAC. The 200304 SAAC president was Kate Jelus from the women’s team. The 2006-07 vice-president was free-styler Emily Karel. The Committee consists of representatives from each one of UConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to community service, it promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The SAAC also holds an annual Talent Show for freshman studentathletes and an ice cream social at the end of each semester during the study period for final exams.

hen the Town of Mansfield and the University of Connecticut formed the Mansfield Downtown Partnership, Inc. over a decade ago, it was perhaps difficult to imagine a vibrant, walkable downtown in the heart of the Mansfield. But now, steps away from the Town Hall, Mansfield Community Center, E. O. Smith High School, and UConn’s School of Fine Arts, the beginnings of Storrs Center provide a tangible preview of good things to come in this college town! Construction began on the first phase of Storrs Center with a ceremonial groundbreaking on June 29, 2011. Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Mansfield Mayor Betsy Paterson, and UConn President Susan Herbst were on-hand to celebrate the culmination of many years of planning and the beginning of a new chapter in the Town-Gown relationship. Less than a year later, the first businesses opened the doors of their new homes: Storrs Automotive (11 Dog Lane) and Select Physical Therapy (9 Dog Lane, Suite 108) opened in Storrs Center in April. The first phase of Storrs Center (Phase 1A) consists of 1 Dog Lane and 9 Dog Lane, which feature commercial uses on the first floors and rental apartments on the upper floors; the new Storrs Automotive in 11 Dog Lane; and a new parking garage. The rental apartments, The Oaks on the Square, were fully leased by the end of April 2012 and will open in mid-August 2012. Businesses have lined up quickly for the new downtown. In 1 Dog Lane, visitors will find Dog Lane Café (from the owners of the Vanilla Bean

Café in Pomfret and 85 Main in Putnam), Froyoworld, Insomnia Cookies, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Mooyah Burger & Fries and Subway. Nine Dog Lane will be the home of Bank of America, Body Language, Geno’s (a new restaurant from UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma), Head Husky, Husky Pizza, Select Physical Therapy, Sweet Emotions Candy and Travel Planners. These businesses will all begin to open in mid-August. Meanwhile, the next phase is already under construction. Phase 1B includes another mixed-use building, featuring commercial spaces and additional apartments from The Oaks on the Square, and the intermodal transportation center. Both of these buildings are being constructed adjacent to the parking garage, which will open to the public in mid-August 2012. The Oaks on the Square will begin accepting applications for the apartments in September, but information is available now on their website: www.theoaksonthesquare.com. The commercial spaces for Phase 1B are filling up as quickly as those in the first phase did. The UConn Co-op will open a new satellite location facing the Town Square while maintaining its existing location across the street from Gampel Pavillion. The UConn Co-op @ Storrs Center will feature general books, a children’s section, a café and much more. Dr.

Susan Herbst is the 15th president of the University of Connecticut and began her duties at the school in June of 2011. Prior to coming to her position in Storrs, Herbst was the executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for The University System of Georgia. Herbst is the first woman to be selected as the University’s president since the school’s founding in 1881. In her position with The University System of Georgia, Herbst led 15 university presidents and oversaw the academic missions for all 35 public universities in Georgia. She worked closely with the system’s Board of Regents on all aspects of finance and higher education policy for the state. The system has more than 311,000 students, roughly 10,000 faculty members, and a budget of more than $6 billion a year. She had been with the Georgia system since 2007. In addition to those duties, Herbst continued to hold a faculty appointment as a professor of public policy at Georgia Tech. She is the author of many scholarly journal articles and books, including her most recent book about incivility in American politics, Rude Democracy, released in September 2010. Herbst was previously provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at SUNY-Albany from 2005 to 2007, and also served as acting president of the school for a year. She also served as the dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Temple University from 2003 to 2005.

Herbst joined Northwestern University as an assistant professor in 1989 and remained there until 2003. There, she rose to become chair of the political science department and associate dean for faculty affairs. She received her BA in political science from Duke University in 1984 and her Ph.D. in communication theory and research from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communications in Los Angeles in 1989. Herbst was born in New York City and raised in the midHudson Valley town of Peekskill, N.Y. She and her husband, Doug Hughes, have two children: Daniel Hughes, 17, and Becky Hughes, 16.

In addition to all that the city of Hartford and the state of Connecticut has to offer, the region within two hours of Storrs is ripe with cultural and entertainment possibilities. SPRINGFIELD (47 miles) The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is located less than an hour from Storrs in Springfield, Mass., just minutes from the YMCA where Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 1891. A must-see for any fan of the hardwood, the Hall of Fame reopened in the fall of 2002 in a brand new $45 million home just off of Interstate 91 in Springfield. The pinnacle of any basketball career, the hall’s long list of inductees now includes UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun, a 2005 inductee, and women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, a 2006 inductee. BOSTON (86 miles) The birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is a living history textbook, covering everything from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Meanwhile, the city blends its old world charm with a cosmopolitan new world attitude that is evidenced by some of the trendier shops and restaurants that line both historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Back Bay’s Newbury Street. One of the world’s foremost centers of education, Boston is home to over 50 colleges and universities; perhaps the entire world’s most concentrated collection of colleges. The greater Boston area also includes the summer beach resorts on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. t has long been known as the “Insurance Capital of the World” and it serves as a daily busy hub for some of the most dynamic corporations in the nation. It also serves as the home for UConn football at Rentschler Field and a home-away-from-home for the UConn men’s and women’s basketball teams at the XL Center. The City of Hartford, Connecticut’s state capital, and the Greater Hartford region are ranked highly for workforce productivity, accessibility, income levels, technology, education, the arts and heritage. Hartford is resource-rich with desirable residential real estate, communications, infrastructure, parkland and nature trails, health care and pubic safety. The city serves as the headquarters for several Fortune 500 companies, including United Technologies Corporation, The Hartford Financial Services Group, Aetna, Inc., and Northeast Utilities. Hartford employs seven times more people in the insurances field than the average metropolitan area. Hartford’s neighborhoods are diverse and historic. The central business district, as well as the State Capitol, Old State House and a number of museums and shops are located Downtown. The newest attraction in Hartford opened in 2005 with the debut of the Connecticut Convention Center — a $230 million, 1.6 million-square-foot convention facility that is one of a series of projects that is bringing new life to the city. One of the hubs of downtown activity in Hartford is the XL Center, which is also the home facility for the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League. Each year, the finest golfers in the world compete at The Travelers Championship, which is played at Cromwell’s Tournament Players Club at River Highlands and is part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup.

ATHLETICS The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics enjoyed another outstanding year in 2011-12. The women’s basketball team advanced to its 13th Final Four as it also won the BIG EAST tournament championship. The men’s basketball team once again played in the NCAA tournament as did UConn teams in men’s soccer and field hockey. The field hockey team also won the BIG EAST regular season championship. The UConn women’s track and field team finished 24th at the NCAA Indoor Championships while diver Danielle Cecco earned a spot in the NCAA Championship for the secondstraight year. UConn individuals from both the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams appeared in NCAA competition. UConn also made the exciting announcement in June that it will elevate its men’s ice hockey program to the Hockey East Conference for the 2014-15 season. Hockey East in considered the finest league in the country in that sport and will further advance to the Division of Athletics.

Victoria Flowers and Heather Wilson continued the success UConn has achieved in recent years in women’s track and field. The Huskies had a total of seven All-Americans in 2011-12.

UConn and state officials made the exciting announcement that the school will be joining the Hockey East Conference in 2014-15.

Jake Waruch was the BIG EAST decathlon champion and participated in that event at the NCAA outdoor championship.

All-American Carlos Alvarez and the Husky men’s soccer team played their way to the NCAA quarterfinals.

All-American Jestine Angelini and the Husky field hockey team played in the NCAA national semifinals and won the BIG EAST regular season championship.

All-American Bria Hartley and the UConn women’s basketball team won the BIG EAST tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four.

UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR WARDE J. MANUEL 2012-13 University of Connecticut Swimming and Diving

arde J. Manuel, who has had a distinguished career in intercollegiate athletics that ranges from being a student-athlete to a director of athletics, became the Director of Athletics in March. Manuel, a 1990 graduate of the University of Michigan where he played both football and track and field, has most recently been the Director of Athletics at the University at Buffalo for the past six years. Manuel led a 20-sport program at Buffalo, an institution that is a member of the prestigious American Association of Universities. Buffalo enjoyed an unparalleled period of success during his time there from an athletic, academic and community service perspective. “I am so honored and excited to come to the University of Connecticut,” said Manuel. “UConn is synonymous with greatness, excellence and achievement. It is without a doubt one of the legendary schools that is at the pinnacle of intercollegiate athletics. The opportunity to be the athletics director at UConn and lead this extraordinary division is the role of a lifetime. You have remarkable coaches, great leadership, outstanding student-athletes and a wonderful base of fans, alumni and supporters. Our focus will be on academic success, compliance, ensuring great relationships with our fans, friends and supporters and, without a doubt, victory on the field and the court. My family and I are so happy to call UConn home.” From an academic standpoint, teams at Buffalo enjoyed incredible academic success. When Manuel arrived at UB, there were four programs - football, men’s basketball, wrestling, and baseball - that fell far below the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) cut score of 925. With a focused academic plan, all four teams posted a four-year APR rate above the cut score and at the end of 2009-10, 10 of UB’s 20 sports had scores of 975 or above. Buffalo enjoyed great on-field success during Manuel’s time as the football team participated in the 2009 International Bowl and the men’s basketball team made postseason appearances in three of the past seven years. Olympic sports also thrived under Manuel’s leadership with accomplishments such as threestraight Dad Vail Regatta titles by the rowing team, six wrestlers earning spots at the 2011 NCAA Championship and the women’s tennis team making an appearance in the 2008 NCAA tournament. The sports of baseball and softball won a record number of games during his tenure and student-athletes earned All-American and all-conference honors at record rates. Under Manuel’s direction, UB student-athletes, coaches and staff are committed to community outreach and developed a comprehensive outreach program that reached across social and economic borders. UB student-athletes, coaches and administrators conduct over 2,500 community service hours in the Western New York community on an annual basis. UB’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also coordinates 16 community service projects per year including internal campus related projects and external community projects. Each of Buffalo’s 20 athletic teams also conduct at least one community

service project per year. Manuel was honored by Sports Business Journal as a 2008 national 40-Under-40 honoree after receiving the same honor from Business First of Buffalo in Fall of 2007. Manuel has served on a number of national and conference committees and boards. In September of 2011, he was one of only three Athletic Directors asked to serve on the Collegiate Model Rules committee, a working group of the Division I Committee on Academic Performance, charged with broad overview of the current NCAA Rules Manual. He also currently serves on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and served for four years as a member of the NCAA’s Academic Cabinet. During that time he was selected as Chair of the NCAA Academic Eligibility & Compliance Transfer Ad Hoc Committee. He is a member of the Boards of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the D1A Athletic Directors Association. He also serves as a member of the Council of Presidents Budget & Finance Committee and served for three years as the Chair of the Mid-American Conference Director of Athletics Finance Committee. In June of 2007, Manuel accepted the Opportunity Award by all-time tennis great Billie Jean King, as Buffalo was recognized by the Women’s Sports Foundation as one of four “standout” colleges and universities in the nation for outstanding achievement in providing equitable athletic opportunities for its female student-athletes. Prior to his time at Buffalo, he was the assistant and associate director of athletics for the University of Michigan, where he oversaw that school’s football and men’s basketball programs. In February 1998, he was named an assistant athletic director at Michigan with responsibilities for overseeing operational facets of the university’s athletic program. He was named an associate athletic director in September 2000. Born May 22, 1968, Manuel is a native of New Orleans, who was a high school All-American football player and played for the University of Michigan under its legendary coach, Bo Schembechler. Manuel earned multiple letters and started at defensive end in his sophomore year. His football career was cut short by a neck injury and he subsequently earned two letters on the Wolverines’ track and field team. After graduating from Michigan, Manuel was coordinator of the university’s Wade H. McCree, Jr., Incentive Scholars Program from June 1990 to August 1993. The program is a partnership with The President’s Council of State Universities and Detroit Public Schools that helps students prepare for higher education at public universities in Michigan. He subsequently worked briefly as an academic advisor with the Georgia Tech Athletic Association before being named assistant athletic director of academic affairs. In the course of working on a PhD in social work and psychology at Michigan, he earned a master’s degree in social work in 1993 and an MBA from Michigan’s Ross School of Business in April 2005. Manuel and his wife, Chrislan, have a daughter, Emma (17), and a son, Evan (13).
