Jennifer Sanford-Wendry Head Coach • 14th Season

ennifer Sanford-Wendry is in her 14th season as the head coach of the University of Connecticut rowing program. She was named the head rowing coach in the fall of 1997 when women’s rowing became a varsity sport at UConn. Sanford-Wendry led the team to its most successful season in 2005. The team won the points trophy at the Dad Vail Championship as the varsity eight won, the junior varsity eight finished second, and the novice eight finished third. During the 2010 season, Sanford-Wendry saw the UConn novice eight won the Dad Vail Championship. In 2005, the team finished fourth at the BIG EAST Championship – its highest finish at that event. The second varsity eight, novice eight, and novice four all finished third, while the varsity eight placed fifth, and the varsity four was sixth. The 2005 team also won the team points championship at the Dad Vail Regatta. In 2004, the UConn junior varsity eight win the Dad Vail Championship. In the classroom, the UConn members of the women’s rowing team are role-models for all students at the University of Connecticut, as they continually have a 3.0 of higher team GPA, and often have several studentathletes earn GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Prior to coming to UConn, Sanford-Wendry was the novice women’s coach at the University of Pennsylvania, where she led the Quaker novice eight to the finals of the Eastern Sprints. In 1996 and 1997, she was the United States Junior National Development Team coach. The Sanford-Wendry Family

Jennifer Sanford-Wendry

Sanford-Wendry, a 1993 graduate of Syracuse University, has been associated with rowing her entire life. She began rowing when she was seven years old and had her first race in a single when she was 10. Her coaching career began at age 16, when she began coaching youth programs for the Syracuse Chargers Rowing Club. After graduating from college, Sanford-Wendry taught elementary school for three years while coaching the Liverpool High School women’s crew. In 1995, her Liverpool High School senior eight won the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship. In addition to her coaching responsibilities at UConn, she is a member of the Female Athlete Performance Committee and works with the Female Athlete Peer Group. Sanford-Wendry comes from a large coaching family. Her father, Bill Sanford, retired in 2002 after coaching the men’s crew at Syracuse University for 37 years. Her sister Kris was the head women’s rowing coach at Syracuse from 1996 to 2010. At Marist College, her cousin Tom Sanford is the Director of Rowing and Head Women’s Coach. Sanford-Wendry resides in Coventry, Conn., with her husband, Brian, sons Will (8), Wyatt (6) and Wade (18 months), and dog Libby.

Joe Staub, our strength and conditioning coach, plays a major part in developing creative, yet challenging, workouts for our winter training program. Our academic advisor Becky Taylor offers the support needed to accomplish our academic goals, as shown by our continued success in the classroom. Assistant Coach • 3rd Season

evin Gruber is in his third year as an assistant women’s rowing coach at the University of Connecticut in 2010-2011. Prior to coming to UConn, Gruber served the same position at Southern Methodist University for four years. Gruber assists with the returning rowers and the experienced incoming freshmen. Gruber was the primary coach for the freshmen and novice boats at SMU and had various other responsibilities in the program. He served as the head coach of men’s and women’s rowing at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) from 2002-04. At Charleston, he also was a games management coordinator and served as the school’s sports information director. He served as a graduate assistant coach at West Virginia during the 2001-02 academic year. Gruber is a 2000 graduate of Massachusetts-Amherst and was a fouryear member of the men’s crew club team. He earned his undergraduate degree in sport management and journalism. Gruber earned a master’s degree from West Virginia in athletic coaching education. Gruber is also involved with the Riverfront Recapture rowing program in Hartford as the assistant coach to the men’s masters racing team and as a summer camp coach.

llyson Zoppa is in her third year as a member of the Husky coaching staff in 2000-10. Zoppa is a former student-athlete with the program. A 2008 graduate, Zoppa works primarily with the walk-on rowers. As a sophomore, she stroked UConn’s lightweights to a silver medal in the second varsity four at the Big East Championship. She was also a member of the novice eight that placed third at the 2005 Big East Championship and Dad Vail Regatta. A native of East Hartford, CT, she earned her degree in human development and family studies with minors in English and psychology. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport management at UConn. She has coached rowers of all ages the past five years with the Riverfront Recapture Rowing Program in Hartford.

Volunteer Assistant Coach 2nd Season

arah-Jean Griffin is in her second season as an assistant coach for the UConn Rowing Team in 2010-11. A former rower and 2008 graduate of Cornell, Griffin started as a walk-on and served as a varsity member of the team at Cornell for all four years. She earned her degree in animal science and agribusiness and earned a master’s degree in education from UConn in 2010. Griffin was raised on her family’s farm in West Suffield, Conn. Griffin has coached rowing at Hartford’s Riverfront Recapture program for three years while continuing to row with the masters racing team.

athy Les, a 2009 University of Connecticut graduate, is in her second season as an assistant coach after competing in the rowing program for four years as a student-athlete. She is also a graduate student at UConn in the kinesiology department studying exercise science. Les was a four year member of the team and a team captain in her senior year. She earned the Drive Award for three years in a row. A native of South Windsor, Conn., Les earned her degree in ecology and evolutionary biology. She continues to row competitively as a member of the Riverfront Recapture Women’s Masters Racing Team.

University of Connecticut 2011 SPRING Preview 2010-11 University of Connecticut Rowing

ix seniors lead the charge for the University of Connecticut women’s rowing team as it heads into the 2011 spring season. Seniors Gretchen Stern (Rexford, N.Y.), Kim Weber (Ridgefield, Conn.), and Lizzie Littlewood (Mystic, Conn.) are again sitting in the varsity eight while classmates Audrey Squire (Kinnelon, N.J.), Morfia Efthimiou (Stonington, Conn.) and Amanda Cote (Wakefield, R.I.) are leading the varsity four. In addition to the seniors, the rest of the team has proven to have excellent fitness as shown by their spring erg scores. The team showed a lot of depth in fall 2010 with both the varsity eight and second varsity eight being very similar in speed and competing well at the Head Races. The 2011 Husky squad will consist of a varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four, second varsity four and a third varsity eight. A select group of 33 rowers and coxswains participated in a winter training trip in Miami, Fla. in January. The trip consisted of a lot of seat racing to create a port/starboard ladder at the end of the week, and in addition there was a lot of emphasis on technique. Following the trip to Miami in January, the Huskies went into a seven-week indoor training program to help prepare them for spring racing. This consisted of a lot of erging, cross training (which included swimming and spin bikes) and conditioning in the weight room. The Huskies will kick of the spring racing season in Miami with a scrimmage against Rochester and a 2,000-meter race with the University of Miami. Upon their return from Florida, UConn will have one weekend off before jumping full speed into the racing season. The weekend of March 26-27 brings a tough weekend of racing with the Yankee Cup taking place in Kingston, R.I., against Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. UConn will race at home on Coventry Lake on both April 2and April 3. Marist, La Salle, Trinity and Coast Guard College will all be guests on the Huskies’ home course.

“Our home races are very special to our squad as we only have the opportunity to race on our lake twice,” says head coach Jennifer SanfordWendry, who enters her 14th season in charge of the program. “We look forward to great competition and a lot of fans, including mascot Jonathon the Husky Dog.” Following the home racing weekend, the Huskies head to Camden, N.J. for the Knecht Cup, where they will have many opportunities to race over the course of the weekend with heats, semifinals and finals. “The Knecht Cup provides great racing experience, similar to the format that we will see at the Dad Vail,” says Sanford-Wendry. “We are able to race crews from across the country, and our squad always looks forward to the weekend in Camden as we come out of it better prepared for the Dad Vail.” The Huskies will test their luck against Holy Cross and Boston College in Worcester, Mass., on April 17. Both teams showed good speed this fall and will give UConn some strong competition. The Huskies will take the next weekend off to prepare for the BIG EAST Championship which will be in Mercer County, N.J. on May 1. The Huskies will conclude their season at the Dad Vail Regatta May 13-14 in Philadelphia. “This year’s squad has been a pleasure to coach,” says SanfordWendry. “They show up every day ready to work hard and they expect the same from their teammates. The amount of support that they give to each other on a daily basis is refreshing. Their dedication is something to admire and because of that I am very hopeful that in every race this spring they can put out a great racing performance. If that happens, we will see a lot of success.”

She has a personality that is impossible not to love and her work ethic is equally impressive. She has been a positive addition to any crew she has been in, and she has the gift of leading any crew she is in -- whether she is surrounded by her senior friends or younger teammates. Everyone looks up to her and respects her as a leader on this team. I will miss the sparkle in her eyes and smile on her face next year and hope that she will keep her connection with the team as she completes her degree in education in her fifth year.”

Then upon my licensure, I would like to either apply for a clinical residency or work in a small scale compounding pharmacy in New York or out West.” SANFORD-WENDRY ON STERN: “Gretchen is an incredible athlete as she leads the team on the erg, in the weight room and on the water. As a team captain she is so well-respected by her teammates, they admire her for everything that she is. As a pharmacy major, she has arguably the most challenging schedule that an undergraduate student could have, and she manages her time well enough to have a high GPA and be successful with rowing. Gretchen will go down in UConn rowing history as the person who started weekly “tea time” get togethers, which is another strong attribute of Gretchen. She is always someone who supports outside of practice team activities to promote team chemistry. I will miss Gretchen’s presence in practices next year but hope that she finds a way to stay connected to the team as she finishes her pharmacy degree.

Whether its acting as captain of the rowing team, president of SAAC or volunteering for the Husky Reach program, Kim leads our team and the athletic department when it comes to giving back to the University community. She is someone who consistently seeks feedback from the coaches on how to improve, and I appreciate her efforts and dedication to the sport and our team. Amanda has been a good friend to all on the team and her positive spirit was contagious whether working out in the erg room, weight room, on the water, or during winter training team competitions. That positive spirit will be missed. Amanda is someone who I believe we will see rowing in the future in masters events once she settles in to her professional life, wherever that may be.”

HIGH SCHOOL: Attended Fitch High School in Groton, Conn. … participated in cross country and track and field … was team captain of cross country as a senior … as a junior, was part of 4x400 meter relay team that was league champions and part of a 4x800 relay team that won league title as a sophomore … in freshman year, cross country team won state championship … International Baccalaureate Diploma recipient. PLANS AFTER GRADUATION: “I hope to spend my summer and autumn living the life and seeing the sights on the Appalachian Trail. When I return home, I will begin looking at graduate schools to pursue a career in which I can help people by making science more accessible, probably through nursing or education. Given the opportunity, I’d love to spend some time coaching distance running at the middle or high school level.” SANFORD-WENDRY ON LITTLEWOOD: “We were very fortunate to have had Lizzie choose to return for a fifth year as we thought that last year would be her last year on the team. What a gift to have her for another year! She has made tremendous improvements in all areas this year, ranging from athletic ability, to technique, to mental toughness. She led the starboard side in seat racing in Florida in January which proved just how effective she is on the water. Off the water, Lizzie supports her teammates like they are her family. Whether it be a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior, you can always hear Lizzie cheering people on and encouraging people to be the best that they can be. Lizzie represents what it is to be a UConn rower and student-athlete and she will be greatly missed next year.”

University UConn Rowing and Miamiof Connecticut 2010-11 University of Connecticut Rowing

The UConn rowing team has been a regular Miami Beach visitor since taking its first South Florida training trip in January 1999. Since 2006, the team has made two Miami Beach trips each season – once in January during winter break, then again in March during spring break. The winter break trip is strictly training, while the spring break trip includes both training and racing. The Huskies typically open their spring racing season against the hometown Miami Hurricanes. The team’s home base in Miami is the Ronald W. Shane Center on scenic Indian Creek. The “creek”, actually a large protected waterway, leads into several canals and the Biscayne Bay, allowing for miles of rowing in all directions. “I can’t think of a better place to bring the team for winter rowing than Miami,” says UConn head coach Jennifer Sanford-Wendry. “We can always count on warm temperatures, and given the amount of water access there, we can always find good water to practice on. The Shane Watersport Center is a well run training facility that has been very hospitable to us year after year. Having the opportunity to race the Miami Hurricanes in March, in addition to scrimmaging other collegiate teams that train there, completes the experience.”

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics and its women’s rowing team christened a new shell at the women’s basketball game on February 19 at Gampel Pavilion. Through the generosity of Sora Holdings, LLC, the program was able to purchase a Vespoli “V1” racing shell. Taking part in the ceremony were the entire UConn women’s rowing team, Sora Principal Tom Fore , Sora Principal Greg Fillipek, his wife Kathy and their daughters Diana and Nicole.

Strength and Conditioning

Sports Medicine

The strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut rowing team is under the supervision of UConn strength and conditioning coordinator Jerry Martin. Joe Staub serves as the rowing team’s strength and conditioning coach.

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for the student-athletes to train and participate in their sport.

Staub is in his second year as a graduate assistant at Connecticut. He is currently pursuing his graduate degree in exercise physiology through the Department of Kinesiology. Staub received his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of Connecticut in 2009.

The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. They are devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury and maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care.

He also was a four-year letterwinner for the men’s track and field program where he competed in the combined events. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Mario Diaz works with the rowing team and is in his second season as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at UConn. He oversees the day-to-day sports medicine needs of each UConn rowing student-athlete, while working closely with the rest of the sports medicine staff. Prior to joining the UConn staff, Diaz was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Marshall University from 2006-08 and worked with a number of teams there. He earned his undergraduate degree from Central Connecticut in athletic training in 2006 and a master’s in sport administration from Marshall in ’08. He is a certified athletic trainer from the National Athletics Trainers Association.

Counseling Program For Intercollegiate Athletes The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes, a unit within the Division of Academic Affairs, is the academic support program for The University of Connecticut’s 650 student-athletes. The primary goal of the program is to assist student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities. Our counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including but not limited to Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs. The CPIA staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large compliment of tutors. Becky Taylor works with the women’s rowing program. She is a 1994 graduate of the University of Massachusetts.

The Dad Vail Regatta The Dad Vail Regatta began in 1934 and was started by two men with ties to rowing at the University of Pennsylvania – Rusty Callow and Lev Brett. Callow was the coach at Penn and laid the foundation for the event, while Brett is credited with being the architect. Their goal was to have a college regatta for developing crew programs. Today, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada. Thousands of student athletes visit the city of Philadelphia during the weekend of the second Saturday of May. Harry Emerson “Dad” Vail was one of America’s early college coaches. He coached at Wisconsin between 1911 and the late 1920’s. His crews competed against great odds since little rowing took place in Wisconsin.

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond the classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience as Husky student-athletes contribute countless hours each year to a number of worthy causes. Much of this community service is coordinated through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Committee consists of representatives from each of UConn’s intercollegiate teams. In addition to community service, the SAAC promotes fellowship and camaraderie between student-athletes from different sports. The UConn rowing team has a long tradition of being involved in SAAC and performing community service. The rowing team is one of the highest represented teams in SAAC, usually having over half the team participating in various events. Senior Kim Weber is the current president of the SAAC for 2010-11. UConn rowers are also involved in the “Husky Reach” program, the community service program of the UConn Division of Athletics. Rowers were highly involved in the second year of its reading initiative with the Verplanck Elementary School in Manchester, Conn.

Storrs Center Creating a “Main Street” for Mansfield

ain Street is the heart and the soul of a community, a place to meet friends for dinner before the game, to run daily errands, to enjoy the local music scene, or to buy a newspaper to read while sipping your morning coffee. Main Street is the magic that can transform a street into a neighborhood, buildings into a village, or a small town into a regional destination. In 2001, the Town of Mansfield teamed with UConn to form the Mansfield Downtown Partnership and set about creating its own “Main Street” area, Storrs Center. Storrs Center will be a mixed-use town center and main street corridor at the crossroads of the Town and the University. Located along Storrs Road/Route 195 adjacent to the University, the Town Hall, E.O. Smith High School, and the Mansfield Community Center, Storrs Center will include a town square, pedestrian-oriented streets, small lanes, and public spaces. There will be a variety of shops, restaurants, cafés, and residential options, which will attract all ages and interests and provide spaces for the community to gather. The Mansfield Downtown Partnership and master developer LeylandAlliance have worked diligently to make the vision of Storrs Center a reality. Some of their recent progress includes the signing of letters of intent from several local, regional, and national businesses; the preparation of final construction documents for improvements to Storrs Road and Dog Lane; and initiation of the selection of a designer for the parking garage and intermodal center. As progress continues, excitement about the project has steadily grown. The Partnership has garnered support from a variety of Mansfield residents, as evidenced by its 340 members. Another sign of the broad support this project enjoys is the over $22.5 million in state and federal funding the

Negotiations between LeylandAlliance and prospective tenants are on-going. The women’s basketball team won the NCAA Championship with its second-consecutive undefeated season.

The UConn Division of Athletic sponsors 24 sports that compete on the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the BIG EAST Conference. UConn has won ten national championships since 1990 and has won 93 BIG EAST regular season or tournament championships. Kemba Walker was an All-BIG EAST Conference pick for the men’s basketball team. Melissa Gonzalez and the UConn field hockey team once again played in the NCAA Tournament after winning the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles.

Cristin Allen led the women’s ice hockey team to a top 10 ranking for most of the 2009-10 season. Mike Rutt of the men’s track and field team was the BIG EAST Indoor Track Performer of the Year and qualified for the outdoor NCAAs in the 800-meter run.

Phylicia George of the women’s track and field team posted a number of school records and was the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award Winner for her sport.

Diver Steve Ferriera became UConn’s first qualifier at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship.

Robert McClain and the Husky football team played in its third-consecutive bowl game and won its second-straight.

The Husky baseball team won a school-record 48 games and as UConn was one of 16 schools to host an NCAA Regional.

Brittany Taylor and the women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

He has played a vital role in the success story of UConn athletics for 19 of the past 21 years as he was the Executive Associate Director of Athletics at the school from 1990-2001.In his only two years away from the Storrs campus, Hathaway enjoyed a successful tenure as the Director of Athletics at Colorado State University from 2001-03. His first seven years as UConn’s Director of Athletics have arguably been the most successful in school history. The 2009-10 academic year was another successful campaign. The football team played in its third-straight bowl game and won its second consecutive while the women’s basketball team won the national championship with a perfect record for the second-straight year. In addition, the men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, men’s basketball and baseball teams all qualified for postseason tournament play. UConn was also selected as one of 16 regional hosts for the NCAA baseball tournament. The women’s ice hockey team also spent most of the year ranked in the top 10 of the country. Hathaway also directed UConn to reach an agreement with IMG College, a division of IMG Worldwide, during the 2009-10 academic year. This 10-year athletics multi-media rights partnership is worth more than $80 million in guaranteed payments to the University. In 2007-08, UConn successfully completed the NCAA certification process. The institution was previously certified, once every 10 years as set forth by the NCAA, in 1998. Hathaway provided leadership for a comprehensive, year-long self study of the operations in the Division of Athletics, a site visit by a peer review team, a NCAA certification committee’s review of the self-study and a report by the peer review team. The Division also reached new long-term agreements with two of its media partners in recent years – Connecticut Public Television for women’s basketball and WTIC radio for football and men’s and women’s basketball.

UConn also completed a landmark ten-year, $46 million corporate partnership agreement with Nike, Inc. to exclusively provide footwear, apparel and equipment for Husky athletics. In addition to his leadership role at UConn, Hathaway is entering his fourth-year of a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee representing the BIG EAST Conference. As a member of the ten-person committee, Hathaway takes part in the selection and administration of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and the administration of the CBS television contract. Hathaway will serve as chairman of that committee in 2011-12. He is only the fourth individual in the history of the BIG EAST Conference to serve on the committee, joining Dave Gavitt, Jake Crouthamel and Mike Tranghese. Hathaway is a member of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Some significantly historic achievements have occurred during Hathaway’s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first school to win the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships in the same year (2004) and the football team was victorious in its first ever bowl game - the 2004 Motor City Bowl. Private fundraising for UConn athletics continues to provide exceptional academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. UConn secured a gift of $2.5 million from alumnus Mark Shenkman in 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, an intercollegiate and recreational services facility that serves the entire university community. Under Hathaway’s guidance, the Division of Athletics received the University’s Environmental Leadership Award for the construction of The Burton Family Football Complex and the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center. The two buildings are the University’s first projects certified as meeting the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for “green” buildings. At its 13th annual awards ceremony in March of 2008, the Connecticut Real Estate Exchange presented UConn with the “Green

In his role as Director, Hathaway also oversees UConn’s Recreational Services program. Serving the entire University community, approximately 580,000 individual uses were logged last year, reflecting the popularity of the diverse health and fitness offerings to students, faculty and staff. Hathaway leads a head coaching staff that is one of the most experienced in the country. UConn has 13 head coaches that have been in their current position 10 or more years as of the 2010-11 academic year, including women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma (26th year in 2010-11), men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun (25th) and football coach Randy Edsall (12th). The University recently completed a long term contract extension with Calhoun. UConn has the distinction of being the only school in the nation with two active Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coaches in Calhoun (Class of 2005 inductee) and Auriemma (Class of 2006 inductee). Hathaway was also a key factor in the opening of Rentschler Field in 2003 – the country’s newest and most modern BCS college football facility. During Hathaway’s career, he has always made the student-athlete the top priority. In the spring and fall semesters of the 2009 calendar year, UConn’s student-athletes excelled in the classroom as nearly 50% of the 650 studentathletes achieved a 3.0 “B-or better” semester grade point average. In addition, the Division of Athletics has consistently maintained a 99 percent retention rate among its student-athletes. “My focus is on the student-athlete,” says Hathaway. “That’s the most important part of our program. Our primary mission is the continued academic success of our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify people early in the process and assist them in charting a career path. In addition, we want to provide a quality experience in intercollegiate athletics for our student-athletes.” The University of Connecticut was saluted for its community service efforts by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) three times under Hathaway’s watch for its community service efforts. UConn was also honored by the NCAS in 2006 and ’07 for its efforts to assist former student-athletes in earning their college degree. In the 2006-07 academic year, Hathaway served on the University search committee to hire Vice President/Chief Operating Officer Barry Feldman and Executive Director of the Alumni Association Lisa Lewis. He is currently a member of the search committee for the University’s new president. Hathaway’s leadership has earned him respect and recognition both on the national and local levels. He was one of four finalists for the “Athletic Director of the Year” in the spring of 2008 at the inaugural Sports Business Awards by Street and Smith’s Sports Business Journal. In the summers of 2007 and ‘10, Hathaway was honored by NACDA as the AstroTurf Athletic Director of the Year for Division I-A in the Northeast region (which includes the New England states and New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey). In 2004, The Sporting News named Hathaway to its “Power 100 List” comprised of the 100 most powerful people in sports. He received the Joseph J. Fontana Distinguished Service Award from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association in the spring of 2005. In the winter of 2006, Hathaway received the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation. During his tenure at both Colorado State and UConn, he was a member

of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, as well as the Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee, which is responsible for issues involving postseason football competition and the certification of bowl games. On the conference level, Hathaway was the chair of the BIG EAST Athletic Directors Executive Committee through November of 2009. He is also past chairman of the BIG EAST Championship and Competition Committee as well as the league’s Finance Committee. Hathaway has served as a guest presenter at both the NACDA and NACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators) conventions in the past. In addition, he has also served as a lecturer at the IA Institute sponsored by the Division I-A Athletic Directors’ Association, held annually in Dallas. Hathaway originally came to Connecticut in November of 1990 as Senior Associate Athletic Director. In that role, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics. He served internally as a program administrator for several sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer at UConn as the Huskies won four national championships in those sports during his tenure - two in women’s basketball (1995 and 2000) and one each in men’s basketball (1999) and men’s soccer (2000). Hathaway was also the program administrator for football. He played a critical role in the upgrade of the football program to Division I-A status as UConn became the first ever school to transition from the I-AA level to a BCS football conference. During Hathaway’s tenure at Colorado State, he oversaw a 15-sport program - nine women’s teams and six men’s. The Ram football team made a pair of bowl appearances while Hathaway was at CSU. The men’s basketball team won the Mountain West Conference tournament in March of ‘03 and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 13 years. The women’s basketball team advanced to postseason play twice, including a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2002 and the semifinals of the 2003 Women’s NIT. Hathaway was an extremely successful fundraiser during his time in Fort Collins. The school drew national attention for a $15.2 million gift from the Bohemian Foundation and president Pat Stryker for football stadium renovations and expansion. Prior to his first stint at UConn, Hathaway served in a number of capacities at his alma mater - the University of Maryland - from 1982-90, including Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions, Acting Assistant Athletics Director for Business Affairs, Athletics Business Manager and men’s basketball trainer. Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Administration from the University of Maryland in 1981. He later received a Master’s Degree in General Administration (1991) from the University of Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. He attended The Sports Management Institute at the Universities of Notre Dame and Southern California. Hathaway also completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University. Born June 20, 1959, in Cheverly, Md., Hathaway and his wife Paula have two children: Meghan (October 15, 1991) and Michael (June 11, 1995).

he sights and sounds of more than a century of intercollegiate athletics competition come alive during a visit to the J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum. Located in the new and expanded UConn Alumni Center in the heart of the University of Connecticut’s main campus in Storrs, the Husky Heritage Sports Museum is the ultimate library documenting the wide-ranging successes of Connecticut’s athletic programs. The state-of-the-art design and layout of the 2,700 square foot Husky Heritage Sports Museum, named after benefactor and 1940 Connecticut basketball and football captain J. Robert (Bob) Donnelly (shown above with wife M.J.), vividly captures all of the energy, excitement and enthusiasm that is associated with “Huskymania”. Donnelly passed away on Sept. 26, 2005. The visitors’ UConn experience begins with the University of Connecticut “National Champions” Gallery. This unique museum addition, located in the entrance foyer of the Husky Heritage Sports Museum, was unveiled in December of 2004 and will serve as a permanent tribute to all University of Connecticut varsity teams that climbed to the mountaintop and earned the right to be called National Champions. Currently, a total of 13 national champion squads, representing four different UConn sports, have team photos and national championship logos on display in the National Champions gallery. Included in the National Champions Gallery is the unbeaten 1948 men’s soccer team of Coach John Squires, the 1981 and 1985 UConn women’s field hockey teams of Coach Diane Wright, the 1981 men’s soccer team of Coach Joe Morrone, the 2000 men’s soccer team of Coach Ray Reid, the six national championship women’s basketball teams of Coach Geno Auriemma (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009), and the 1999 and 2004 UConn men’s basketball teams of Coach Jim Calhoun. Upon entering the Husky Heritage Sports Museum, visitors are greeted by a full figure statue of Jonathan, the legendary mascot of all Husky athletic teams. Oversized banners proudly hang from the ceiling, displaying action images that feature 88 of Connecticut’s All-American stars representing 17 different intercollegiate sports. A tour of the various sections of the Husky Heritage Sports Museum is a walk down memory lane for long-time followers of Connecticut athletics. For fans just becoming acquainted with UConn’s tradition of excellence, the various themes and areas of the museum, when woven together, narrate a complete and compelling sport-by-sport story line. The growth and development of Connecticut athletics is traced via text, photographs and select artifacts from its humble beginnings in the 1890s to its present day ranking among the elite major college athletic programs in the nation. Included among the “must see” memorabilia in the Husky Heritage Sports Museum main concourse are the 1981 and 2000 NCAA National Championship Men’s Soccer

trophies; the 1981 and 1985 NCAA National Championship Women’s Field Hockey trophies; the 1950s era baseball gloves belonging to Connecticut’s three Dropo brothersincluding Walt Dropo’s first baseman’s mitt when he was the American League Rookie of the Year with the Boston Red Sox in 1950; the 1935 Ramnapping Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Connecticut-Rhode Island football game; a 1931 football signed by the entire Connecticut squad; team photos of Connecticut’s first men’s (1901) and women’s (1902) basketball squads; and the Waterford Crystal NCAA National Championship trophies won by UConn Women’s Basketball (1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010) and UConn Men’s Basketball (1999, 2004). The pinnacle achievement of UConn’s eight NCAA National Championships in both men’s and women’s basketball is preserved and promoted in a unique circular sanctuary–the Connecticut Basketball Rotunda, a gift of Herb and Marcia Dunn. Championship trophies and related artifacts that chronicle UConn’s men’s and women’s national titles are prominently featured in the rotunda, as are life-size cutouts of Husky All-American stars Ray Allen and Rebecca Lobo. Celebratory paintings of head coaches Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma are on display along with a one-of-a-kind watercolor team photo of the 25-member UConn Men’s Basketball All-Century team. Also within the Husky Heritage Sports Museum experience is a video wall featuring a 65-inch high definition television. Visitors can view numerous historical moments in UConn history as captured on a variety of highlight films and documentaries. Each display case of memorabilia and every historical photograph located within the walls of the J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum describe a portion of a truly remarkable story. That story of the teams, the coaches, and student-athletes who have been part of the rich history that constitutes the University of Connecticut athletic experience is now being told on a daily basis at UConn’s Husky Heritage Sports Museum. The J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum is open free of charge to the general public during regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) of the UConn Alumni Center. Since the Husky Heritage Sports Museum opened in January of 2002, several important artifacts have been donated from UConn loyalists to help expand the scope of the Connecticut Athletics storyline. The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics continues to seek additional memorabilia/artifacts to help expand the story of the UConn Huskies.
