sr.//Mid-Distance

With its first ever IC4A Outdoor Championship last spring, UConn looks to return to the winners circle at the BIG EAST Championships during both the indoor and outdoor seasons this year. Senior captains Mike Rutt (Sinking Springs, Pa.) and Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) will lead a UConn team which has a great blend of experience and youth. The Huskies will travel to Akron, Ohio, in late February for the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and will return to Villanova in early May for the 2011 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship. Opening the indoor season a week later than years past, the Huskies will not attend the Sorlein (URI) Invitational, but will add the Great Dane Invitational which takes place at their favorite indoor venue, New York City’s 168th Street Armory, home of the New Balance Track and Field Center. The 2010 outdoor schedule features a return of the Spring Trip to Florida after a four-year hiatus in which the Huskies will participate in the Hurricane Alumni Invitational hosted by the University of Miami. UConn will head south three times during the outdoor season, and will match up against Albany in the second edition of “The Dogfight” in late April.

Middle Distance Senior two-time All-American Mike Rutt leads a veteran group that looks to continue BIG EAST dominance in the 800 meter run and make further inroads in the mile throughout competition this season. All-BIG EAST performer Alex Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.) and his twin Tim will join senior Dan Holst (Smithtown, N.Y.) as dependable BIG EAST athletes who will attempt to break onto the national level in the 800 meter run following standout seasons last year. Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.), who ran a tough BIG EAST mile during the indoor finals last year, joins Rutt in hopes of challenging the magical Four Minute Mile standard. A number of athletes in the sophomore and freshman classes will add depth to the middle distance events, led by freshman Chris Dailey (Dallas, Pa.). Multi Events With at least six BIG EAST scorers at his disposal, veteran multi coach Rich Miller’s biggest problem will be how to get all of them in uniform this season. Twotime BIG EAST Heptathlon champion Aaron King (Wharton, N.J.) is backed by the Waruch twins, Jake and Ben (Kerhonkson, N.Y.), both All-BIG EAST performers in 2010, while Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) expect to have their hands full with Division III Bates transfer Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.), who was a 6,500 point decathlete as a freshman. King in his “spare time” doubles as UConn’s top long and triple jumper, and it is conceivable that as many as four of these athletes will challenge for National qualifying spots this season. Jumps Another deep and talented event for the Huskies is the pole vault, led by BIG EAST and IC4A runner up captain Kyle Duggan. All-BIG EAST performer Zach Meverden (Wexford, Pa.) along with Dylan Dombrowski, Matt Alexander and Kyle’s younger brother Cory form a group unmatched in the East, boasting four vaulters over 16 feet. When Aaron King is not a jumper, UConn’s top athlete in the triple jump is Tyrone Faverey (Allentown, Pa.), who garnered All-East honors last year in the Huskies’ IC4A Championship. Faverey and sophomore Eric Fontanez (Rochester, N.Y.) were both BIG EAST scorers in the high jump last season, but sophomore transfer Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) has the top jump in the group thus far. King though, will undoubtedly double up the multis and the long jump, with freshman Luke Kuna (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) backing him up in both events. 2010-11 UConn men’s cross country/track and field

Throws The Huskies return all four BIG EAST scorers from a year ago in the javelin in Cody Unger (Oak Ridge, N.J.), Dylan Dombrowski (Breezy Point, N.Y.), Ed Strosnick (East Haven, Conn.) and Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.), and they are hoping for a solid season in all throwing events. All-East performer Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) has his sights set on a BIG EAST shot put championship as well as points in the discus, while freshman Eric Masington (Trevose, Pa.) will be backing him up in the shot put and challenging him in the discus. Justin Siekierski (Wilbraham, Mass.) should be a top athlete for UConn in both the javelin and discus, with Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) also looking to make an impact in the 35 pound weight throw and the hammer.

Distance After a promising cross country season, the underclassmen-led distance runners are hoping to contribute on the track as well. Freshman Dan Francouer (West Hartford, Conn.) will redshirt until the outdoor track season after leading the Huskies at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship this season. Cross country captain Nick Aguila (West Hartford, Conn.) and fellow sophomore Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.) will compete indoors as will redshirt freshman Ryan McGuire (Orange, Conn.). In the distance-rich BIG EAST, contributing in this event area almost guarantees National caliber performances.

sr.//Mid-Distance

Sprints & Hurdles Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.), an All-BIG EAST performer in the 200-meter dash, will lead a young and talented group of UConn sprinters this season. Sophomores Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) and Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.) are 100-percent healthy and ready to contribute, while freshmen Chris McConnell (Andover, Mass.), New England 55-meter dash record holder and New York State 100-meter dash champion Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) figure to be right in the mix on the flat this year. Senior Kyle Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) and sophomore Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) handle both the long and short hurdle events, with both excelling at and scoring in the BIG EAST 400 intermediate hurdles. A major hole for the Huskies exists in the 400 and 500 meter run area, with no BIG EAST scorers returning in this event group. Fontanez and freshman Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.), both from the Rochester, N.Y. area, look to rectify that situation, while Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.) and Matt Granata (Wantagh, N.Y.) hope to help out during the outdoor season.

Relays Holst and Rutt, who were part of 2009’s World-leading 4x800 meter relay, will join the Bennatan twins and Johnson in hopes of posting a top time in the distance medley relay this season as well. The 4x400 meter relay and the 4x100 meter relay will both be very young, but will potentially be able to do damage at the podium level in the BIG EAST.

Head Coach greg roy University of Connecticut 2010-11 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field

Greg Roy Head Coach 26th Season University of Rochester ‘78

Greg Roy, University of Connecticut men’s track and field head coach, enters the 2010-11 season with a strong returning group of Huskies and a skillful incoming class that will continue his winning traditions during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Roy enters his 26th season as the head coach of the men’s cross country team and his 22nd season at the helm of the track and field program. Year by year, he has been able to elevate a national caliber program to prominence at the conference, regional and national levels. His squads have produced a remarkable 258-41-3 record in dual competitions during his tenure, along with seven BIG EAST track and field titles. He has also produced 31 All-Americans during his time at UConn, including current Husky Michael Rutt. Throughout his career at UConn, Roy has established a solid foundation for the cross country and track and field programs. With top notch indoor and outdoor facilities, the program has the tools to match the ambitions that Roy and his Huskies set out to reach each year. Last season, Roy led his team to six first place finishes, including a fifth straight victory at the New England Indoor Championship and the first ever title for the Huskies at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. Following the 2010 outdoor season, Roy sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship, marking the first time since 2004 that the UConn men’s team had more than one athlete at the event, with Michael Rutt, Brian Gagnon and Sean Smith representing the Huskies. For the 16th time, and second straight year, Roy had one of his athletes named the BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Performer, as Smith took home the honors of Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer for his accomplishments during the conference Championship. In 2008-09, Roy earned the first back-to-back BIG EAST Titles during his tenure as head coach when the track and field team won the 2009 Indoor BIG EAST Championship. For his efforts, Roy and his coaching staff were honored with the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award for the second season in a row and the sixth time during his coaching career. Roy produced three All-Americans in the indoor season as Michael Rutt and Brian Gagnon earned their second All-America honors in the 800-meter run and Marquis Thomas was named an All-American in the high jump. Roy also took home USTFCCCA honors for the fourth time as he was named the Northeast Indoor Track Coach of the year following his successful 2009 Indoor season. During the 2007-08 season, UConn won the BIG EAST Indoor Championship and fell only 17.5 points shy of taking the Outdoor title as well. During the 2008 seasons, Roy coached six of his athletes to eight BIG EAST individual titles. For his efforts, he was rewarded for the fourth time in his career with the title of BIG EAST Indoor Staff of the Year. UConn continued on its hot streak after the BIG EAST Championships and under the direction of Roy, won its 14th New England Championship in the last 15 years qualifying three of its athletes for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2006-07, UConn was unable to win a BIG EAST Championship but instead won the Sorlein Invitational, the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, the Harvard Select Meet and the New England Championship. Roy was able to guide Jake Radzevich to two pole vault individual championships, Sean Berg to an individual championship in the heptathlon, Gagnon to the title in the outdoor 800-meter

run, Andrew Dubs to an outdoor shot put victory and his 4 x 100m team to a relay championship. During the indoor season, Roy was named New England Coach of the Year. During the 2005-06 season, UConn won its fifth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in school history, fourth under the direction of Roy and the third in the last five years. Roy also guided the Huskies to a pair of first place finishes and a 13-1 overall record during the outdoor season as well. Under Roy’s tutelage, seven Huskies were selected to compete in the NCAA Regionals following outstanding performances in the regular season. Senior Joel Lagare, one of the NCAA Regional finalists, finished third in the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second time under Roy. Sean Berg also appeared in his first NCAA Championships as the junior competed in the decathlon and finished in 18th place. In the 2004-05 season, the Huskies saw success across the board while some of the program’s greatest talents suffered injuries. Will Thomas advanced to the NCAA Championship in the decathlon for the fourth-consecutive season, but was injured during the competition and could not finish. UConn finished in ninth place at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, with numerous athletes scoring points in different events. The Huskies also finished in a tie for seventh at the New England Championship. Outdoors, UConn finished fifth at the BIG EAST Championship and third at New Englands. With Roy’s assistance, Ellis Gaulden and Thomas both advanced to the NCAA Regionals, with Gaulden competing in the high jump. Roy’s squad captured its fourth BIG EAST Indoor Championship in 2003-2004, its second in three years and won an 11th-straight New England Championship. The team took second at the IC4A Championship and saw two of its members take home All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship as Will Thomas finished fourth in the heptathlon to become a three-time All-American and Logan Jones earned AllAmerica honors in the 800-meter run. The Huskies took third at the Outdoor BIG EAST Championship and Paul Pisano became the firstever three-time javelin champion. Joel Legare earned All-America honors at the outdoor NCAA Championship in the 800-meter. In 2002-2003, Roy produced four All-Americans for the second consecutive year. Will Thomas earned the honor for a second time in the decathlon, placing second at the NCAA Championship. Thrower Paul Pisano also earned All-America status for the second straight 2010-11 UConn men’s cross country/track and field

Head Coach Greg roy of Connecticut University 2010-11 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field year, as did Joe Mendel in the sprints. Mike Deibler earned his first All-America honor by placing eighth in the high jump. The indoor and outdoor teams took home second-place at both the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championship. Indoors, UConn saw its usual success at the New England Championship, bringing home their 10th consecutive title. The 2001-02 season was one of the most successful in Roy’s career. His indoor and outdoor squads took home both of the BIG EAST Championships and Roy, for the eighth consecutive year, had his athletes reach All-American status as four athletes were awarded the honor. Dan Wilson garnered All-America status three times to become the first five-time All-American in UConn history. Wilson finished 14th at the NCAA cross country championship, eighth in the indoor mile run and registered the fifth All-America title at the outdoor track and field championship, finishing ninth in the 1,500 meter run. Joe Mendel finished among the top eight in the indoor 400-meter dash to claim the honor, while Paul Pisano and Will Thomas earned their All-America status at the outdoor championship. Pisano earned a 12th place finish in the javelin and Thomas competed in the decathlon, finishing eighth with a then school record 7,630 points. In addition, the team successfully defended the New England Indoor Championship title. Along with a pair of New England titles in 1999-2000, Roy led the Huskies to an overall record of 21-1, a runner-up performance at the BIG EAST Outdoors and a third-place finish at the indoor edition of the meet. During the indoor season, four more All-Americans were added to the school list as the distance medley relay team of Haven Barnes, Elliott Blount, Kevin Jensen and Dan Wilson finished fourth at the NCAA national championship with a time of 9:33.85. Roy added to his list of achievements by being selected by his peers as the United States Track Coaches Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year following both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The first 14 years as the Head Coach of the Husky track squad began the tradition of excellence that Roy thrives for today. Starting in 1990, the Husky squad began their dominance in both New England and NCAA competition. Over the next eight years, Roy produced his fifth and sixth cross country All-Americans in Andy Ball (1990) and Travis Landreth (1998) as well as mentored four-time All-American hurdler Dudley Dorival who went on to compete in the Olympics for Haiti in 2000 and 2004, weight thrower Steve Santoli (1998) and thrower Ray Wilks (1999). Roy’s squads finished 81-5-1 in dual meets from 1995 to 1999 for an outstanding .934 win percentage and won their second Indoor BIG EAST Championship. Before the start of the 1999-2000 season, Roy had accrued five NCAA Coach of the Year awards (1990-Cross Country, 1993-94-Indoor, 1995-96 Outdoor, 1996-97 Indoor and 1998-99 Indoor) as well as, with his staff, back-to-back BIG EAST Staff of the Year awards (1995-96-Outdoor, 1996-97-Indoor). In 1990, Roy brought his cross country squad into the national spotlight, finishing 10th in the nation at the NCAA Division I National Championship meet while also winning the IC4A Championship. UConn ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation. The 1993-94 season marked the beginning of an 11-year winning streak at the New England Championships and in 1996-97, before winning the BIG EAST Championship, Roy coached his squad to a perfect 15-0 dual meet record.

2009-10 season reviewof Connecticut University 2010-11 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field

2010 Indoor Season Led by a core group of veterans, the 2010 UConn men’s track and field team captured their fifth straight New England Indoor Championship, along with two additional team victories. Over the course of the indoor season 20 Huskies qualified to compete at the IC4A Championship, the final event on the 2010 indoor schedule. For the second season in a row, the Huskies opened the 2010 indoor season at the Yale Invitational, bringing home two individual titles and the distance medley relay title. UConn’s individual wins came from Pat Sampson in the weight throw and Mike Alleman in the shot put, with Sampson recording an NEICAAA qualifying throw and Alleman posting a New England qualifying throw. The following week, the Huskies won the Sorlein Invitational for the fifth straight season, and brought home their first of three team titles during the indoor portion of the 2010 schedule. UConn finished the meet with 12 titles, 24 top-3 finishers and five one-two finishes. Connecticut won four distance titles, four field events, two sprint titles and two relay titles, including Alleman and Sampson, who won the shot put and weight throw for the second consecutive meet. UConn followed up its first place finish at the Sorlein Invitational with another victory the next week, winning the Harvard Quad. Throughout the day 16 different Huskies qualified for postseason action, with six marking IC4A qualifying times and 10 qualifying for the New England Championship. Senior Anthony Burris led UConn by winning both the 200 and 400 meter titles, and set New England qualifying times in both. The following weekend, UConn placed fourth at the elite Saturday Night at the Armory meet, earning points in 14 of the 15 events that they competed in and recorded 12 IC4A qualifying times on the night. To open February UConn participated in both the New Balance Collegiate Invitational and the Giegengack Invitational, splitting the team between both meets. The Huskies combined for three titles and 11 IC4A qualifying times over the two meets, led by Dan Holst and Kevin Steinberg who were victorious in the 1,000 meter run and 60 meter dash respectively. The third title on the weekend came from the distance medley relay, with all three titles coming at the Giegengack Invite.

recorded a victory for UConn, while six other Huskies placed in the top-two in their respective events throughout the meet. The Huskies ended the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championship with a fifth place finish, and eight UConn athletes earning All-BIG EAST honors for their performances during Sean Smith the meet. Jake Waruch had the highest finish for the Huskies, coming in second in the heptathlon, while Ben Waruch, Jamaal Smith and Steinberg each placed third in individual events. The final group of athletes to earn All-BIG EAST honors was the quartet of Holst, Alex Bennatan, Tim Bennatan and Scott Johnson who finished third in the 4x800 meter relay. UConn’s final team victory of the indoor season came in the form of their fifth straight New England Championship, finishing the weekend with 140 points, outscoring their closest opponent by 71 points. The Huskies recorded five first place finishes on the day, with Kyle Rowbotham, Smith, Alex Bennatan and Michael DaPice posting individual victories and the 4x800 meter relay team of A. Bennatan, Tim Bennatan, Johnson and Holst recording the lone relay title of the meet. Throughout the 2010 indoor season, 20 Huskies qualified to compete at the IC4A Championship, the final indoor event of the year. Zachery Meverden was the top finisher for UConn at the meet, placing third in the pole vault. Also earning points for the Huskies were; A. Bennatan, Tyrone Faverey, J. Waruch and Alleman, who competed in the 800 meter run, triple jump, heptathlon and shot put respectively.

2010 Outdoor Season The 2010 outdoor season was highlighted by three team victories, including UConn’s first ever title at the IC4A Outdoor Championship. Throughout the season, Connecticut collected 43 individual and relay titles, qualified 10 athletes for the NCAA East Regional meet and sent three Huskies to the NCAA Championship. The team kicked off their season by winning the Jerry Gravel Classic, their first of three outdoor team victories. The Huskies dominated the meet, winning nine out of the 14 events that they competed in, with Chris Whyte and Mike Alleman each posting two individual victories. Next, UConn participated in three meets that did not determine a team score, beginning with the Texas Relays in which Aaron King and Sean Smith participated in the decathlon. The Huskies then

2009-10 season review University of Connecticut 2010-11 University of Connecticut Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field took part in the UConn Alumni Invitational and the Spec Towns Invitational, earning 12 individual and two relay titles over the three meets. The Huskies returned to Storrs in the middle of April for their final home meet of the season, defeating Albany 122-78. Kyle Duggan’s first place pole vault mark ranked him 21st nationally at the time, while Brian Gagnon won the 800 meter run with a time that ranked him in the top-10 in the east region. Nine other Huskies and the 4x100 meter relay team combined for 13 titles, as UConn won 15 of the 19 events during the meet. After two days of competition at the World Famous Penn Relays, the Huskies returned home with a school record and four top-five performances. Alleman and Marquis Thomas were the lone individuals to finish in the top-five, Alleman winning the shot put and Thomas placing second in the high jump. Both the distance medley and the 4x800 meter relay teams posted fourth place finishes, with the 4x800 quartet of Alex Bennatan, Dan Holst, Mike Rutt and Gagnon setting a school record with a time of 7:18.58. Behind two individual titles and one relay title the Huskies finished the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship with a fourth place standing. Smith, who was named the 2010 BIG EAST Outstanding Field Performer, defended his title in the decathlon while Gagnon won the 800 meter run. The 4x800 meter relay team also placed first, while seven other UConn athletes and two relays recorded top-five performances during the championship. Two weeks after placing fourth at the BIG EAST Championship the Huskies won the IC4A Championship, earning their first ever IC4A outdoor title. Gagnon was victorious in the 800 meter run, picking up his second IC4A title in the event. The 4x800 meter relay once again brought home a first place finish, while seven other Huskies recorded top-five finishes helping UConn to its third outdoor victory of the season.

2010 Cross Country Season Review Led by a trio of under classmen, the 2010 UConn cross country team recorded three top-five finishes en route to a 10th place finish at the BIG EAST Championship and a second place finish at the IC4A Championship. The Huskies started the season off with back-to-back second place finishes, first at the Fairfield Invitational with Nick Aguila placing second overall, then at the UMass Invitational led by Ryan McGuire. UConn recorded a top-10 finish at the New England Invitational for the seventh time in program history, placing 10th overall, led by Aguila who finished 25th. The following week, four Huskies finished in the top-10 at the Connecticut College Invitational, leading UConn to its first victory of the season. After two weeks away from competition, the Huskies came back with a 10th place showing at the BIG EAST Championship, led by Dan Francoeur. Six Huskies raced at the NCAA East Regional Championship, led by the trio of McGuire, Jordan Magath and Aguila who finished one, two, three for UConn. UConn ended the 2010 season with a second place finish at the IC4A Championship, led once again by the trio of McGuire, Magath and Aguila who had top-12 finishes for the Huskies.

Nine Huskies qualified for the NCAA East Regional meet during 2010, led by Rutt and Gagnon who each advanced to the NCAA Championship in the 800 meter run. Alleman also qualified for the Huskies, finishing 15th in the shot put, just missing the cut for the NCAA meet. Will Sanders, Tyrone Faverey and Thomas also advanced to the finals of the regional meet, placing 30th in the steeplechase, 39th in the triple jump and 26th in the high jump respectively. The trio of Gagnon, Rutt and Smith represented UConn at the NCAA Championship following their performances at the East Regional meet. Gagnon and Rutt placed 12th and 13th in the semifinals of the 800 meter run while Smith finished 19th in the decathlon in his final meet as a Husky.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance ranks UConn in the top 35 for best value in public colleges. Whether your long-range goals are preparing for a career, pursuing a graduate degree, or attending medical or law school, “students can receive a stellar education without graduating with a mountain of debt”. UConn has a variety of programs to help many students financially, ranging from merit scholarship opportunities to need-based financial aid packages, all designed to support a large number of qualified students. The University also has many part-time campus jobs with flexible hours that help students earn extra spending money or build their résumé with hands-on work experience.

With our main campus in Storrs, we’re a major academic institution that values its small-town roots. Students enjoy the familiarity of an intimate academic institution, while being just a short drive from major cities. UConn’s regional campuses are strategically placed across the state in Avery Point, Farmington, Stamford, Torrington, Waterbury, and West Hartford, offering a quality education to meet our students’ distinct needs.

7 UConn has something for everyone. Students select an established major or design an individualized plan of study to meet their specific needs. UConn takes pride in offering all students, including those enrolled in our distinctive Honors Program, the opportunity to pursue a major in any of the University’s 100+ programs of study. In addition to academic advisers, online study tools, and tutorial centers, UConn offers career counseling workshops, Study Abroad programs, and internships that offer valuable experience. The University of Connecticut offers many academic choices, yet remains committed to providing students with the support needed to help them achieve their goals.
