Kaua‘i’s northernmost point Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge includes a world-famous lighthouse and bird sanctuary. The 160-acre refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson

Historic Significance This wildlife sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary also has a presence, with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970. This year is the centennial celebration of the Kilauea Lighthouse. See page 22 for details. Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413, Map C:E20.

aptain Chris of Na Pali Riders has the only raft company consistently touring the ENTIRE 17 miles of the Na Pali Coast.* Captain Chris says, “Touring the Na Pali Coast truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We make sure that our passengers get to see it all including the famous sites of Hanakoa Valley, Hanakapi‘ai Valley, the Pirates Sea Cave, and the Double Door Cave. These are some of the most significant attractions on the Na Pali Coast and should not be missed.” The Na Pali Riders’ difference starts with attention to detail in all aspects of our Na Pali Coast Raft Tour. We offer a ride on our state-of-the-art 30-foot, 920 Zodiac raft. Departures are from the West Side’s Kikiaola Harbor in Waimea, the closest harbor to the Na Pali Coast. Snorkeling takes place at one of three different locations depending on currents, water clarity and conditions permitting. All beginning snorkelers have our experienced and knowledgeable crewmen as their personal guides.

ALOHAWEAR Surround yourself with swaying palm trees, petroglyphs, pineapples or hibiscus by putting on alohawear. Aloha shirts and mu‘umu‘u—the staple of every islander’s wardrobe—come in styles suitable for casual, career or dressy affairs. A roomy, cotton mu‘umu‘u lets the breezes blow up from your toes and a cotton aloha shirt will keep you cool all day. But if your upscale event calls for island attire, find specialty mu‘umu‘u adorned with ruffle lei necklines and seam piping. And a soft, “silkie” aloha shirt that you don’t tuck in would be the perfect evening look. Whatever alohawear style you decide to wear, it will bring the aloha experience along, wherever you are.

Just as Hawai‘i boasts its own apparel style—alohawear—it also has its own unique jewelry styles. They include Hawaiian heirloom jewelry, Ni‘ihau shell lei (pictured at left), Tahitian pearls, and shell jewelry. The tradition of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry began around 1887. Hawai‘i’s Queen Kapiolani and Princess Lili‘uokalani attended Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in England, where they received gifts of solid gold bracelets with their names carved in old English lettering. Upon their return, the Hawaiian royals had similar bracelets made for their relatives, beginning a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Kaua‘i’s island neighbor, Ni‘ihau (known as the “Forbidden Isle”), is the source of the delicate white, yellow, blue and rare gold shells that are collected, sorted, finely drilled and painstakingly strung into necklaces and chokers by Ni‘ihau residents. These shell garlands are usually of museum quality; ask the retailer for a certificate of authenticity.

THIS WEEK KAUAI

Situated on the north shore of Kaua‘i, the cliffs of the Napali coast stand among the sheerest in the world. The serrated-edges and cathedral-like spires jut up skyward and drop from view into the ocean. Though it’s one of the most remote regions in the world, the Napali coastline is accessible by foot, air or sea. A boat tour with a knowledgable guide offers several benefits including a crash course on some island history, spectacular views, a snorkel or dive excursion, with lunch often included.

Diving Divers have an abundance of opportunities to explore various spectacular undersea locations around the Garden Isle. See

77

colorful coral, undersea caverns, jewel tone tropical fish, sea turtles, curious dolphins and more. Activity providers have professional trained guides and offer a variety of dive options as well as classes.

Surfing Surfing as both sport and transportation is important in Hawai‘i’s history, dating back to the 15th century. Over the years, surfing has branched out into many variations. For example, in body or boogie boarding, you’ll ride waves on four-foot boards in a reclining or kneeling position. In stand up paddle (SUP) boarding, no waves are needed as you glide on top of the water. You’ll get a full body workout. and it’s great fun for the whole family.

Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA)/Robert Coello

Kayaking A kayak for one, two or three paddlers is a fun way to get really close to the water. Many providers offer guided tours as well as equipment. Instead of ocean kayaking, paddle down the winding Wailua River. Learn about the area’s cultural and historical signficance to the early Hawaiians from knowledgable tour guides.

po‘ipu beach park Considered one of America’s “Best Beaches” according to the Travel Channel, it’s located on Kaua‘i’s south shore, Great conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving. Lifeguard on duty. Map G:F9.

salt pond beach park The origin of this beach comes from generations of saltmakers who use the nearby ponds to make Hawaiian salt. Good swimming conditions, sunset viewing and tidepools. Lifeguard on duty. Map E:C19. The beautiful beaches and sparkling ocean that surround Kaua‘i are wonderful vacation playgrounds. But before heading out to play, talk to your concierge or an activity provider about specific beach features, its surrounding waters and potential, invisible rip currents. For your safety, community volunteers have installed Rescue Tubes, 10 foot high tubes with personal flotation devices used to stabilize a distressed swimmer. If you see one at the beach, be sure to read about their usage.

I mean you, Bubba, & Li’l Bubba too–– Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry. Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime. The Bubba snorkels are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today.

FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!
