Welcome... Surprise! Milwaukee is a gem of a destination. The beauty, the events and the natural advantages of our community astonish some of our visitors. They arrive with few expectations and depart with an appreciation of all Milwaukee offers. Throughout our history, Milwaukee’s identity has been closely tied to our freshwater assets. Lake Michigan and our rivers have always been important for both commerce and recreation. Water-related industry and waterborne transportation are important parts of the economy. Our lakefront parks and festival grounds draw millions of people; our riverwalk, the trails and bikeways along our rivers, and even our urban fishing add to Milwaukee’s character. Our museums, ethnic celebrations and professional sports teams are all important facets of life in Milwaukee. And our neighborhoods are loaded with charm. Our city has a lot to offer. That’s no surprise to residents, and more and more visitors are discovering Milwaukee’s appeal.

Tom Barrett, Mayor

Step outside and enjoy the season’s last warm weekends. Options include Milwaukee Brewers baseball games, farmers markets, festivals and our many parks. 2015’s final lakefront ethnic festival is Indian Summer Festival. Also drawing crowds in September is Doors Open Milwaukee, with more than 150 locations offering free tours. For indoor fun, attend the museums, theaters, and concerts Milwaukee County has to offer. The current show at the “Domes” is titled Clueless, and leads visitors to solve a murder mystery by collecting clues in the garden. As you plan your adventure here, KEY Milwaukee is an outstanding resource. No matter what you choose to do in Milwaukee County, I hope you enjoy your time with us.

Wine & Harvest Festival Originally, the wines of Cedar Creek Winery and Wisconsin’s homegrown produce and artisan foods were the inspiration for this free, family-oriented event. Celebrate fall in Historic Cedarburg at the 43rd Annual Wine & Harvest Festival. For a quick shuttle around town, hop aboard a tractordrawn hayride wagon and hear the live music featured at several locations both days. Entries for the Scarecrow Contest are displayed throughout the historic district, while Pumpkin

Carver extraordinaire Steve Dahlke turns large pumpkins into grotesque faces at the City Hall Lawn on Saturday. Art on the Avenue features more than 250 juried artist booths. The Cedarburg Cultural Center, W62 N546 Washington Ave., displays the Cedarburg Artists Guild’s annual juried Fall Show. The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts, located east of downtown, offers special

exhibits and activities. Purchase some of fall’s bounty at the Farmer’s Market, while Wisconsinmade foods such as honey, syrup, cheese, sausage and jellies are available in the Marketplace. Also at the Marketplace, find unique handbags, hats, skin care products and more. The festival Food Court features unique items like the Harvest Apple Brat.

Cover Feature g It’s a true family festival. At Ashley’s Candyland for Kids, find magicians, Popcorn the Clown, a bouncer and Paint a Pumpkin. On Saturday, from 11am4pm, the third Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off is presented by Port Washington State Bank, W61 N526 Washington Ave, in the bank parking lot. While pumpkins weighing more than 1,000 pounds reign at this event, other “giants” include watermelons, tomatoes, gourds and more. The annual Giant Pumpkin Charity Regatta on Sunday features gigantic, decorated, hollowed-out, floatable pumpkins, piloted by paddlers attempting to race across Cedar Creek. At the Cedar Creek Settlement, home to 25 shops and restaurants, wines are available by glass, bottle or case at Cedar Creek Winery. Food is served at the Settlement’s Courtyard Grill and at Anvil Pub & Grille’s Patio Bar. The crowd-favorite Great Grape Stomp includes the Kids Stomp at 1 and 3pm and the Adults Stomp at 1:30 and 3:30pm, both Saturday and Sunday. Cedar Creek Marketplace is a crafts bazaar located in the Settlement’s courtyard. At the Settlement’s Packer Legends tent on Saturday and Sunday, former players meet fans and sign memorabilia. Fans can purchase items onsite or bring their own items for signing (fee).

Par 3; one of several ‘infinity greens’ [focus on golf]

Sensational SentryWorld MORE THAN JUST ‘FLOWER’ POWER

If any golf course owner or player wants to see how a club should be run, they’ve got to check out SentryWorld. It’s where people and technology come together to make golf the game it should be: enjoyable, challenging, and inspiring. Notwithstanding the 40,000 flowers on the par 3, 16th hole (there are 100,000 flowers throughout the course), SentryWorld has always been a Midwest favorite. But with the redo completed last year by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and architects Jay Blasi and Bruce Charlton, it is now a nationwide winner. Don’t be surprised if it hosts some significant tournaments in the near future or, at the very least, moves up in the rankings among America’s best. Located in Stevens Point, Wis., about 150 miles northwest of Milwaukee, on the manicured and coiffured grounds of Sentry Insur20 keymilwaukee.com

ance’s corporate headquarters, SentryWorld has the feel of a high-end, year-round resort. Unfortunately, it still has no hotel with all of its related amenities like swimming, spa, etc. to make it a real resort. But its sprawling, renovated and recently enlarged two-story clubhouse has indoor tennis courts; meeting rooms and an airy restaurant with a relaxing patio that includes multiple fire pits and plenty of comfortable chairs to watch the play on several tees and greens. And while SentryWorld may not be a self-contained resort, there are several motels in the immediate area offering stay & play packages. Being in a small city smack dab in the middle of Wisconsin gives SentryWorld a kind of insularity that adds to its charm and attraction. The people are genuinely nice and respectful, and the course staff is knowledgeable and protective of this gem. I happened to pair up with Tom Stenborg, one of SentryWorld’s starters, on his morning off. It was obvious he was proud to be able to work and play there, and he knew exactly what a visitor like myself wanted and needed to know.

Several holes have been completely reconfigured and rerouted, giving the course its first facelift since opening in 1982. The greens are devilish to say the least. Combine their speed with the severe undulations and subtle breaks, and you end up with, well, devilish. Get on the wrong side of the hole and don’t be overly disappointed with a three putt. Take your lumps and move on. Then there are the false fronts, false sides, and the almost invisible line between the fringe and green surface (“infinity greens” as they’re called) that make club selection sometimes problematic. All 54 bunkers are large and deep, and filled with fine white Ohio silica, making them a delight to play from because of their consistency. And they’re constructed in such a way as to hold the sand in place (they’re called “Better Billy Bunkers”) even in heavy downpours that probably would wash out regular traps. The bright white sand adds to the resort feel and to SentryWorld’s uniqueness. After all, the only time you see white in the Upper Midwest is during the winter. And water? Ten holes sport

SPORTS g the wet stuff and none of it is just for show. It’s all in play. Of course, what would you expect in a state with more than 10,000 lakes? For all golfer levels, it adds up to beauty and the beast. You can walk SentryWorld, although distances between a couple holes are a bit lengthy. But in this case taking a cart adds to the fun. The GPS is state-of-the-art with touch screens that provide distances from any point to any point on a hole. And the system automatically slows the cart when crossing bridges (inclines and declines are no problem here because there are no elevation changes to speak of). Moreover, it doesn’t allow the cart to get too close to greens, traps, and water hazards, and it keeps the cart on paths during times of cart path only. If you stray

Par 3; the infamous or famous, take your pick, ‘flower’ hole.

from the paths, the carts will go very slowly in reverse until the cart is back on the path. Warnings pop up on the screen when you’re lagging behind the group in front, thus facilitating a decent pace of play and adding to the game’s enjoyment. When making your plans to play SentryWorld, keep in mind it’s closed on Mondays to give

the course a breather and the maintenance staff a chance to keep it one of the finest tracks anywhere. Other than at country clubs, where else do you get such commitment to the game at the expense of revenue? The golf industry wouldn’t have to worry about growth if there were more SentryWorlds. It’s another reason Wisconsin is becoming a golf mecca. Oh yeah, in case you’re wondering, should your ball stray into the flowers on the 16th hole, it’s a free drop. And don’t bother to look for your ball because you may be asked to leave and never come back again if you’re foolish enough to stomp around in the Wizard of Oz-like fields of flowers.
