here are Las Vegas tribute shows, then there’s “Legends in Concert.” This record-breaking show, now at Flamingo Las Vegas, is in a class all its own when it comes to paying homage to musical legends of today and yesteryear. “Legends in Concert” recently celebrated 30 years on the Las Vegas Strip. Originally, the show was

intended to run just six weeks, but after it opened in 1983, the hits just kept on coming. For the last four years, the show had a successful stint at Harrah’s Las Vegas, and opened at the iconic Flamingo in January, 2013. While there are any number of tribute shows in Las Vegas, what sets See Legends on pg 58

Blackjack is one of the most popular Las Vegas casino games, and can be a great value when it comes to odds and your possible return on investment. As with all forms of entertainment, we want to get the most value from our dollars as possible, so here are a few ways to get the most from your next blackjack session. For starters, it matters which blackjack table you choose. Beyond selecting a table with a minimum bet you can afford, when you’re ready to pull up a chair, make sure it’s at a table full of players. Why does that matter? Well, it’s no secret the “house” always has the edge. In blackjack, playing the optimal strategy, the house edge can be 1% or less. By playing at a full blackjack table, you play fewer hands, thus lowering your potential losses. It’s important to note the house advantage can vary based upon things like the number of decks used or whether

getting a blackjack pays 6-to-5 or 3-to-2. Lots of casinos on The Strip pay the worsefor-the-player 6-to-5, so shop around before you sit down! Another easy, free way to get more value from blackjack (or any table game, actually) is to always play using your casino loyalty club card. When you buy in, make sure you present your loyalty club card to the dealer, who will then pass it along to a manager, or “pit boss.” Now, the casino knows who you are and will track your betting level. Why is this a good thing? Because depending upon how much you bet, and for how long, you’ll be able to get freebies like dinner, show tickets or even a room. If you don’t use your loyalty card, the casino won’t be able to track your play, and you’ll be out of luck when it comes to requesting comps. Oh, and do ask. Be polite, and just inquire, “Have I played enough to get a buffet?” You’ll be surprised what goodies might come your way. Of course, one of the best ways to stretch your blackjack bucks is to simply know as much as you can about the game. The choices you make can signiﬁcantly impact the house edge (most often, not in a good way). Go online, or grab a smartphone app that can teach “Basic Strategy,” or you might even go old-school and get one of those color-coded “cheat sheet” cards in the casino’s gift shop. The cards tell you what to do in any given blackjack scenario, and in most cases you can even refer to the card while you’re playing in the casino. Ultimately, here’s the best advice you can get to make the most of your blackjack bankroll: Have fun. Because if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.

“Legends” apart is the caliber of its talented cast. These performers don’t merely attempt to look like famous singers, they embody those singers, both in appearance and sound. There’s no lip-syncing in “Legends in Concert,” these talented singers and musicians are, for lack of a better term, the real deal. The line-up in “Legends” changes fairly frequently, so even if you’ve seen it before, you’re likely to see and hear something new at the Flamingo. The show currently features impersonators channeling Britney Spears, played by Katie Murdock; Michael Jackson, played by Damian Brantley; Elvis, played by Victor Trevino Jr.; Rod Steward, portrayed by John Anthony and Lady Gaga, played to uncanny perfection by the supremely versatile Kate Steele. Each performer takes on several hits of each legendary artist, with pitch-perfect singing, backed by a live band and some of the best dancers anywhere on The Strip. John Anthony, as Rod Stewart, croons songs like “Tonight’s the Night” and “Maggie May.” Anthony’s take on Stewart has even been endorsed by “Smiler,” the 58

official Rod Stewart fan club magazine. A classicallytrained pianist, Steele is a quadruple threat: She sings like Gaga, dances, plays the piano and has even mastered Lady Gaga’s speaking voice. Steele managed to strike just the right balance between humor and being respectful of Lady Gaga’s immense talent, sure to thrill Gaga’s passionate legion of followers, her “Little Monsters.” Steele’s take on “Poker Face” and “Edge of Glory” are show-stopping, assisted by overthe-top costumes, such as an attentiongrabbing bubble dress and an avant-garde outfit inspired by Lady Gaga’s video for “Paparazzi.” Victor Trevino Jr. seems undaunted as he tries to fill the big, blue suede shoes of The King himself. In 2010, Trevino was named one of the top five Elvis tribute artists in the world by Elvis Presley Enterprises, among his many accolades. Other superstars in the ever-revolving

Today: Hidden treasure in Las Vegas is? Adam: There is more than just the strip here; we have beautiful parks and I personally like going out to Red Rock Canyon. A day trip out to Mt. Charleston takes me back to the mountains of West Virginia. Today: Time to plug, tell us about Country Superstars: Adam: Country Superstars at The V Theater inside Planet Hollywood is an award winning concert experience. The show features tribute artists singing your favorite songs and emulating an uncanny likeness to the real performers such as Reba, Shania Twain, Brooks & Dunn and Garth Brooks. I perform as Tim McGraw and later return to the stage as myself. I close the show with original music I recorded in Nashville, TN. With a rotating cast the show is always fresh and entertaining.
