Since the turn of the century, Carmel has been a mecca for artists, writers, actors and playwrights intent on creating an intellectual and cultural oasis. Each year, visitors are drawn to the diverse festivals and events created to promote and enhance the creative traditions of Carmel. The annual Carmel Art Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, and the Carmel Shakes-peare Festival are just a sampling of events presented by professional artists, actors and musicians from Carmel and around the world. The Sunset Community and Cultural Center, located on San Carlos Avenue between 8th and 10th, is the heart of Carmel’s cultural life. It’s newly renovated, award winning, state-of-the-art, 718 seat Sunset Theater is home to the Carmel Bach Festival, the Monterey Symphony Orchestra, the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Jazz at Sunset series and many other eclectic groups. The Sunset Center presents the annual Performance Carmel series – nine performances throughout the year featuring some of the best touring music, theater, dance and comedic attractions. The Outdoor Forest Theatre, the Pacific Repertory Theatre, and other local theatres have a rich tradition of quality performances in unique venues.
