ANCO Vogel of Illovo Beach realised the first major milestone of his budding golf career recently when he won the Junior Africa Challenge at Zebula Country Club near Bela Bela. The 11-year-old won the tournament — one of world junior golf’s four “majors” — by three strokes to earn his green card and an invitation to play in the Malaysian Championship in December, the US Kids Golf European Championship in Gullane, Scotland next May and the US Kids Golf World Championship in North Carolina, U.S. next August. “I really wanted to win the Africa Challenge because I knew it would open lots of doors for me. It was a wonderful opportunity and an amazing experience,” the Port Natal pupil told the Fever. The victory was the culmination of two years of hard work and sacrifices, making it that much more meaningful for the youngster and his family. “I have worked so hard for this. When other kids played, I was on the golf course practicing, doing what I love most. I also started working out at the gym and that made a huge difference in my

game. I am extremely proud to have accomplished this. It was my dream, and I realised that hard work pays off and dreams do come true,” said Janco. Janco, whoalsowontherecent U12 Royal Durban Open played at Durban Country Club, said none of his African or regional titles compares to his greatest personal triumph he felt when he beat his father Nico for the first time. “The best feeling ever was when I beat my dad for the first time. I think winning the Africa Challenge was the second best feeling.” Janco comes from a golfing family, hisgrandfather, fatherand uncle all sharing a passion for the sport, and he believes the support and guidance of his family and coaches have been integral to his early success. “Mygrandfatherwasagolflover and I always wanted to play with him and my dad. Now that I’m older, my dad is my inspiration—hereallystandsbehindme. I also have the best two coaches in the world — David Graham, my golfcoach, andLanceSilwood,my gym instructor. They make sure I know my place and my strengths “I am a very proud father. It is wonderful to see that’s his hard work paid off in the end. I always

thoughtIwouldhavearugbyplayer for a son, but his talent is definitely golf,” said Nico. Janco cut his teeth at international level in May when he played in this year’s US Kids Golf European Championship in Gullane, Scotland after finishing fourth in the SA Kids World Qualifier in Bronkhorstspruit in February. The notorious gusting Scottish conditions made a baptism of fire for Janco, as he finished 40th overall, but he believes the experience he gained will stand his in good stead. “It was quite difficult to play the links courses and the weather was challenging. I would like to improve on my achievement and hopefully I won’t find the courses and weather so daunting the second time around.” Due to the costs involved, Janco might not be able to play in all three of the prestigious overseas tournaments, and like a true born competitor, Janco hassethissightsontheultimate prize. “IfIhavetheopportunityto play in the world championship my aim is to win it. America’s weather and courses are much closer to whatI’musedto, andIreally think I can do it.”

SANDY Warrior, a passionate Grade 4 teacher from Amanzimtoti Primary, is a finalist in the Pep Teacher of the Year competition. “It’s been such an incredible experience up to now. I’ve been interviewed by the newspapers and by Pep radio’s deejay, e.tv has been to the school to film an insert for its programme and the community has been so supportive,” Warrior told the Fever. Earlier this year, Pep and e.tv asked South Africa’s primary school pupils to show appreciationfortheirfavouriteteacherbyenteringhim or her into Pep Teacher of the Year award by sendingaletterofmotivationexplaingwhythey think their teacher should win. One of Warrior’s last-year pupils, Keely Crocker did exactly that. Her letter was heartwarming, expressing gratitude of how her teacher supported her during her illness.

Keely suffers from a chronic kidney infection. Warrior has gone the extra mile ensuring that Keely’s academics did not fall behind and by encouraging the other pupils to also be supportive and accommodating. “Then I received a phone call from Cape Town informing me that I was one of the finalists.” Initially all the media attention was overwhelming. “This whole journey is an incredible experience, and now that everything has sunk in I realise how big a deal it really is,” Warrior said. Winners will be announced by end of October. The winner will receive R15 000 and the pupil who nominated her will receive R5 000 in Pep vouchers. Vote for Warrior by dialing *130*737# to vote for free or SMS the word “teacher”, followed by her code 986 to 34705. SMSes costs R1.50, Free SMSes do not apply.

HE Umdoni Municipality’s finance chief, Adil Nunkumar told councillors and officials at the September Finance and Administration Portfolio committee meeting that “our consumers can’t afford any more increases — it’s becoming more difficult to collect rates. Unlike a district municipality such as Ugu, we can’t cut off their water. We have little bargaining power”. Aggravating the problems is the fact that the municipality continues to make expensive new senior staff appointments. Recent examples have included a deputy to the technical services general manager, an IT manager, a communications boss and a manager in the municipal manager’s department. He asked management to do an analysis, towards expanding the rates base — bringing showing the net increase in human resource on board currently non-rated rural homes. “We have to find additional sources of inexpenditure taken on so far this year. Scottburgh crime rate continues downwards SETON THOMPSON

>>ucnews1@feveronline.co.za

CRIME in the Scottburgh police cluster area showed a decline of around five percent in August, compared with the previous year. Burglary was down as was theft from motor vehicles while theftofmotorvehiclesandassaultwith intent to commit gross bodily harm in creased. High incidence areas were Scott

burgh, Amandawe, Park Rynie and Pen nington, but following a high level of 80 “A” category arrests, the Pennington ar ea showed a significant drop in house breaking. Police reported that a conse quence of the arrests is that other per petratorshaveshiftedtheireffortsfrom night time to daylight hours. The police emphasised the need to remain alert, ensure that entrances are secured and notify them of any suspi cious activity. They pointed out that

many perpetrators are motivated by drug addiction and that one recent sub ject of arrest was so emaciated that he gained entry through a seemingly im possible space. The police continue to rotate their limited resources to meet the varying patterns and incidence of crime. The demand for police to commit more resources to the beaches contin ues to be an issue. A meeting to resolve this issue is scheduled shortly.

Truck recovered, suspect arrested AN empty Dyna 10ton truck was found by a Magma Security farm patrol in the Ifafa area at about 9am on Wednesday, 4 September. Three men were in the process of stripping the vehicle and loading the parts into an Uno vehi cle. Two of them fled when they saw the pa trol, but the third was handed over to the Hibberdene police. Both vehicles were im pounded. The suspect, 26yearold Sibongiseni

Pumpstation project restarts SETON THOMPSON

>>ucnews1@feveronline.co.za

T

HE Ugu District Municipality’s Pennington’s Dolphin Drive pump-station project is being reborn. The new contractor, Town and Around, moved on site on Wednesday, 18 September and all concerned hope to hand over the completed project by mid-2014 at the latest. Thepasthistoryofthisprojectreads like an unbelievable tragi-comedy. It was introduced with considerable fanfare to the local community syears ago in a presentation by Stemele Bosch, the consultants and designers. The subsequent tender was awarded to Thandeni Women’s Construction, at least partly because of its BBEEE qualifications. The stated contract period was 10 months, until October 2013, but, from the outset in January 2013, problems arose. The start was delayed by abnormally heavy rains and pipes and cables belonging to other organisations got in the way. Attempts to keep the existing pump station operating in the interim resulted in floods of sewage-laced water pouring out almost daily, with ac-

companying stench. This flowed repeatedly into a neigh-

bouring garden, the street, the excavations and ultimately, the Nkomba River, wetland and reserve. An errant excavatorsankhalfofitsbulkintotheresultant quagmire and attempts to extricate it saw other vehicles and equipment floundering around in the prohibited wetland. It was also belatedly discovered that bedrock lay stubbornly immovable at well above the projected lower level of the new pump-house silo. In the face of this chapter of problems and errors, Thandeni Construction also floundered and its contract was terminated. A lack of communication was another contributor. Meetings of the project steering committee were peremptorily cancelled without explanation. The Pennington public was left facing an abandoned excavation which blocked the only alternative northsouth thoroughfare to the R102. The new team has made entry to the scenewithanengineerinchargeandan experienced contractor. Among the early activities will be limited and controlled blasting of the rock to allow completion of the excavation, which is not expected to inhibit public activity.

More Kingsway parking space, tree boxes removed SONJA NELL

>>ucnews2@feveronline.co.za

THE concrete tree boxes along Kingsway in Warner beach, Amanzimtotihavebeenremoved during September. “Thedreadedtreeboxesalong Kingsway have been the topic of many a heated discussion since the day of installation,” said Ward 97 DA councillor André Beetge. Initially the boxes were installed to plant trees for decorativepurposesandtosupplyshade for vehicles parked along the road. Theconcretecurbingbetween the parking spaces were however, not welcomed by everyone. Many people thought it was a waste of space. The initial vision of shade providing trees never got off the ground and the community fought to rather have the boxes removed.

“The process was certainly not an easy one. It followed in the wake of several meetings, discussions and continued correspondence substantiated by numerous photographs to various municipal departments. Our presidency had resulted in the development planning department securing suf- ficient budget to instruct development engineering to employ the services of an independent contractor to execute the project,” said Beetge. The removal of the curbing and laying of matching paving started in the beginning of September and is now completed. Parking in the area is now much easier than before. “The few remaining trees were removed by the parks department and relocated to more suitable locations as part of Ward 97’s September Arbor Week initiative,” Beetge told the Fever.

Other stones should be looked under Dear Fever, READING about the Liquid Platinum affair (Fever, 6 September) making news recently I am a little confused. No I’m not, I’m very confused. Let’sseeifIunderstandthecurrentsituation — project manager Liquid Platinum cc was hired by the Umdoni Council to complete two major contracts at a cost of R391 million. This during 2011 and 2012. Said company quoted on work to be done on a turnkey basis, meaning the work will be done for the quoted price. It is stated that questions at council were asked at the time whether VAT was included and if variation orders had been issued for departures from the original specifications. These queries were apparently clarified and the council determined that the figures were final and any further claims would be resisted. I’ve no idea if these projects were completed or abandoned or even started. My understanding is now that a claim of R9.5 million from an original claim of R45 million is going to be paid to Liquid Platinum by the Umdoni Council (althoughclaimantwouldreportedlyaccept R6.5 million). The question is why and anyway, how were these figure arrived at? A further development is that the Department of Co-Operative Government and Traditional Affairs who funded a majority contract, has entered the arena and this could raise the stakes, and/or muddy the waters further. I also understand that any discussion and/or clarification at council level regarding the reason for this payment is being frustrated. Surely we (those who actually pay rates, that is) should be able to ask these questions and expect honest answers instead of being treated like mushrooms, after all it’s our money and it’s loss to council coffers will set back service delivery for everyone. It could be that the claim is valid and has to be settled but the public should be appraised of the details because steamroller tactics as reported, only suggest that claims to democracy, adherence to our constitution and municipal transparency are tenuous. If my summation is correct it rather suggests there are other stones that should be looked under. Ian Birtt Pennington

WHOONGA useage not only in Toti Dear Fever, IHAVEreadthearticleonwhoonga and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed because it only focused on Amanzimtoti. I grew up in Winklespruit and the use and sale of whoonga is hectic. Ilivedwithsomeonewhobecame addictedanditwashellonEarthand he showed me where he would buy it and then smoke it. One of the places that it was sold

at was by the big taxi rank in Winklespruit by the DSM mall and also by the KFC. Addicts use the bathrooms at KFC and the Kingsburgh Shopping Centre to smoke it. When I told the police where one of the major suppliers for that area lives they were not interested and never contacted me again in this regard. The rise of prostitution in Warner

Beach can be directly linked to the drugusageanditssadtoseetheonce beautiful area I grew up in turn so bad. The thing is that the people who are supposed to protect us turn a blind eye because they are either too lazy or just don’t care or even worse, are recieving money for being blind. Reports dishearten police SETON THOMPSON

>>ucnews1@feveronline.co.za

THE constant bombardment of the SAPS is adversely affecting officers striving to do a good job according to some of them who understandably wish to remain anonymous. In addition to the commentaries, the growing trend, particularly within the social media, to report, often inaccurately, on the incidence of crime is demotivating the service. “We all know that there are members who are letting the side down and even police stations that are performingwellbelowexpectations. We acknowledge the public’s right to

criticise them and complain, but there are also stations and many men and women who give of their very best,” an officer told the Fever. The latest statistics support this contention. Of 66 relevant cases before the Scottburgh courts, 34 were found guilty, seven were withdrawn and none were acquitted. “Some of us must be doing something right,” said an officer. They are also put off by the constant attack, some of it seen as political, against their top management. “We know that political chiefs such as ministers are fair game for other politicians and we know that some of our top officers have also let

us down, but we sense that every commissioner has now become a target. “As it happens, and speaking for myself, with the benefit of some working experience with her, the current commissioner of police is doing a lot of good things which the public knows little or nothing about. As the old saying goes, ‘give a dog a bad name and hang him.’ “I find cases that I have close personal knowledge of are being seriously misreported in the social media and even in the press. Are the originators doing any checks before sending out such information? It seems not, in my experience.”

Remove the opportunity to sinbin a player Dear Fever I RECALL many years ago when I was playing cricket as part of our club’s fifth or sixth league team, far apart from the Neil Adcocks and Paul Winslows playing on the adjacent Oval at our competitor’s home base, that the batting side had to provide the umpires. As a result, disagreements with the fielders and bowler over the decisions I made were frequent and our team had a standing joke as we made our way out to do our umpiring stint to “have the car ready with the engine running”. Thepastweekend’sTestrugbyand what passed for refereeing reminded me of those occasions and answered the once perplexing question of why a Test team does better at home than away. A referee does not even have the car with the engine running, he has many thousand All Black fans, worked up to winning at any cost, screaming at him and he promised his wife back in la Belle France that he wouldn’t do anything stupid. IfthelynchmobthoughtBismarck was guilty, then Bismarck was guilty. Just to prove it, as Nick Mallett pointed out, the referee in the AussieArgentinematchconcludedinfrontof a Perth crowd that if the Australian prop forward buckled, it had to be Argentine’s fault and a penalty to the Aussies. Just how the IRB overcomes this law of nature is beyond me, but maybe it should start by removing the opportunity to sinbin a player — add five points on to the opposition’s score or something similar. It won’t stop the referee looking for his car, but it might lessen the consequences. Paul Minnaar Mtwalume

Never underestimate a woman Dear Fever, MOST of us who own a car have, at some stage, experienced that freaked-out sensation when, as you slam the door shut, your eye catches your keys dangling from the ignition or locked inside. I live in a retirement home and it happened to me last week. With the help of other more technically savvy males, I set about getting into the car without smashing the window or calling a locksmith — both hideously expensive solutions to the predicament. While engaged in the progressively futile and frustrating occupation withvariousdevices, upwalkedalady and said: “Locked your keys in have you? “I can probably help.” I struggled to maintain a serious demeanour at what seemed, from a chauvinistic perspective, to be huge joke. Nevertheless, I stood aside as she

took a piece of wire from among my collection of failed implements, twisted into a double ropelike structure, applied a couple of right-angle bends and began probing into the locked door’s hidden entrails. As she did so, she confided that her son’s car had been stolen previously and she had set out to find out how. A short course of coaching followed from a gentleman she met on the street who confessed he earned his income that way, and she was proficient. By this time, a sharp upward jab had the reluctant door beaten and she handed it over to me. Believe it or not, I was so delighted that minutes later, I banged it shut again without getting the keys out and she had to repeat her magic. So guys, don’t ever underestimate a lady’s help and thank you Beth — you’re a star. All thumbs Pennington

Dear Fever, AS the petrol price continues to gyrate upwards, I can’t help but feel what a benefit it would be to us on the KZN South Coast to be able to travel up and down by train. A few years ago, I visited family in south-east Britain and although the Poms never stop beating up their own institutions, what a pleasure it was to travel around by their suburban trains. I could even take my son-in-law’s bike on a dedicated rack in the compartment with me. While the cost seemed to me as though I’d bought the railway when converted to rands, it was a bargain compared with car travel. Yet here, in a country with a massive poor population, rail travel is infrequent, inefficientanddownrightdangerousand largely subordinated to so-called taxis, which are even more dangerous. The result is that South Africans are cutting back on travelling anywhere to the detriment of the economy and their own needs and enjoyment. Imagine the enjoyment of travelling from say Scottburgh to Durban and back in a comfortable rail carriage, with doors thatcloseandsecuritytoensureyoursafe arrival. Add the relief of paying say R50 returnforthepleasure.I’mtolditactually costs a good deal less than that, but we’re talking first class and let them charge more and ensure that you get there safe and sound and in comfort. Pensioners, school children and frequent travellers could get attractive discounts. Given that the cheapest car now swallows around R4 per kilometre in total, effective costs, R50 is an absolute bargain, particularly, if there is a train every 15 minutes from early morning to late at night. Taxi drivers and owners won’t like it, but give them shares in the railway — it will be cheaper in terms of lives and cost. Tom Scott Scottburgh

N commemoration of Arbour Week and Heritage Month the eThekwini Natural Resources Conservation division presented an educational and informative morning on Tuesday, 10 September at Ilanda Wilds in Isundu Drive in Amanzimtoti. The theme of the morning was “Green Therapy” and was attended by pupils with disabilities from local special needs schools and officials from the municipality’s conservation division. The programme included guided nature walks, exhibitions of animals and plants and talks on nature, the environment and conservation. “The idea is to give these children the opportunity of experiencing the outdoors by taking them on guided trails by field rangers,” said Basheshile Thusi, an education officer and one of the organisers. CouncillorAndréBeetgeinformedtheaudienceofthe origins of Amanzimtoti’s name. “According to local legend, when Zulu King Shaka led his army down the south coast in 1828, he rested on the banks of the river. When drinking the water, he exclaimed:Kantiamanzimtotiwhichmeans‘so,thewater is sweet’. The river then came to be known as Amanzimtoti.” Beetge sent a powerful message out to pupils: “The greatest enemy of nature is man. As the youth, you are the future of this country. You need to take the message home of what you learnt here today. The only thing you areallowedtoleavebehindtodayisyourfootprintsothat future generations can also enjoy the tranquility of the area like we did today and just as King Shaka did before us.” The Ilanda Wilds area was cleaned up by the municipality to encourage the community make use of it.
