UMAN Rights Day is also International Down Syndrome (DS) Day. “There are three different types of Down syndrome, the most common being Trisomy 21 which is not hereditary. Ninety two percent of people with Down Syndrome are Trisomy 21, hence the 21st day of the third month, March, was chosen as International Down Syndrome Day,” said Caroline Willis of Downs KZN. The incidence of Down Syndrome in South Africa is one to 650 live births annually, with the average age of a women giving birth to a baby with Down Syndrome sitting at 28. “Down Syndrome happens at conception, and the exact cause is

She adds that advances in medical and developmental intervention treatments, together with an improving perception of Down syndrome in society, have resulted in many individuals attaining personal goals undreamed of in years past. The average life expectancy of persons with Down syndrome is 70. “People with DS benefit from loving homes, appropriate medical care, earlyinterventions, educational and vocational services,” Willis said. Roxane Holmes from Toti was 24 when she gave birth to Maddisen. “There was no warning; there are no other Down Syndrome children in our family. I only discovered after birth that Maddisen was born with Down Syndrome, Trisome 21. ETRO Police, SAPS and council officials visited 23 Wanda Cele (Old Main Road) on Monday, where the owner of the premises, Deepak Bhardwaj is alleged to be building illegally. SAPS and Metro were on site due to officials allegedly being threatened by Bhardwaj. At an inspection done on 16 February, officials found that the building encroaches onto the road reserve and does not conform to the approved dwelling plans. The High Court subsequently issued an order to stop all building on the property. Council attorneys issued a letter to Bhardwaj’s attorneys on 5 March stating: “We demand that your client stop building activity immediately. Should building activity continue on 6 March, we shall immediately approach the court for contempt of a court order.” “Bhardwaj is completely disregarding the High Court order and is continuing to build on the property,” said neighbour to the property, Sulaiman Badat. According to Badat a group of neighbours are objecting. Badat, the owner of the property Bhardwaj currently occupies, has filed an eviction notice with the High Court. Badat said that the problem is

Get rid of qualification fraud THE scourge of qualification fraud is yet again in the news. As a retired university professor of applied ethics who worked very for his degrees, I have contempt for people who buy and use so-called degrees from institutions that purport to be genuine universities but are not, and then use them fraudulently to obtain appointments and the benefits that come with them. There are four evils here. Firstly, serious dishonesty by the person who claims such qualifications. This is no impetuous mistake. It is planned, deliberate and sustained.

I HAVE lately discovered how exceptionally difficult it is for someone living in a township to get employment. My temporary gardener, who was laid off after 10 years with a tool company, is now desperately trying to find a job. He has good qualifications, is articulate and works hard, but has no computer. As his temporary PA, I find that every job he has applied for either has to have scanned or e-mailed documents faxed or you have to register online. It can also go a long way in building a better country for all who live in South Africa. Bublé eventually appeared at 9pm and although it was not the best concert I’ve seen, and despite the rain, he’s a nice guy and was entertaining. After an enjoyable but soaking evening, we headed home. The parking area was absolute chaos. There were 15 000 people trying to get home and not a traffic officer was in sight. It was total gridlock. The organisers really need to catch a wake-up. HELLA CARY Via email
Secondly, these misdeeds are an insult to people who work hard for their degrees. The third evil is the lack of disciplinary action by employers against those whose qualification fraud is uncovered, but who are retained in office. This leads to a fourth evil, the encouragement given to others that they can get away with their own qualification fraud. We really must rid the country of this grossly unethical scourge and expose and punish those who fail to take very severe action against perpetrators, including employers who don’t bother to check the source of claimed qualifications with utmost thoroughness. MARTIN PROZESKY Via email
he is successful. What a rude country. Some institutions have no e-mail, phone or fax you simply have to go onto the website and do your thing on their endless forms. I have to confess they have me totally confused, and I don’t know how they can see his references or certificates as they don’t ask for them. The temporary part for him is coming to an end as my regular employee is coming back, but I suppose I can continue the PA bit. OTHER of Peace held a Human Rights Day programme at Lords and Legends on Saturday. This programme was used as a platform to enlighten the public on the rights of children and how to protect these rights. They had a fun-filled line up with the children from Mother of
Peace singing, which was followed by a theatre production by former Isidingo star, Nicola Jackman. The production Mafrika, which is nominated for a Naledi award, was the highlight of the day and it captivated the children. Jackman said that it was an honour to be invited to perform Mafrika because “Mother of Peace is an amazing charity”. The proceeds that were collected

Iris Canham, Mother of Peace manager, said that they need these funds to build a music centre and a recreational place. “The children live on the premises and it is the only home they have so the centre will entertain and create better opportunities for them,” said Canham.

ucnews2@feveronline.co.za AMANZIMTOTI Methodist Church held a fun Sunday school outing on the beach in preparation for Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is celebrated on 29 March this year and is the final Sunday before Easter Sunday.
Christian churches distribute palms on Palm Sunday to commemorate Christ’s triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. The Amanzimtoti Methodist children played all sorts of games in the sand, including soccer and volleyball, they held a sand castle competition and playfully learnt verses relating to Palm Sunday.

children, all dressed up in cowboy/ cowgirl or farmyard theme, were treated to a barnyard outing at the school. “This is our first annual Barnival. We were meant to have a term outing and could not find something local that we had not already done, so we decided to bring the outing to the school,” said principal, Jacqui Welby-Solomon. She thanked Wayne Waters and
Carmen Rossouw from Illovo Nursery and parents, Ashleigh and Freddy Wight, for bringing animals for the children to view and pet. Animals included bunnies, a tortoise, snakes, ferrets and even a chinchilla. Thanks also goes to Charlene Lee and Chantel van Vollenstee for helping with games, Freek and Danielle Kotze for taking pictures, Nicola Butler from ‘Gone Riding’ horse riding school at Bhengu stables for horse rides for all the children and to all the Little Life staff for their enthusiasm and dedication, especially Maureen Cullen. “It is our hope that this event will grow each year,” said WelbySolomon.

HE launch of the Celerio has allowed Suzuki to cast its net wide to capture buyers in the fierce A-AB segment. TheCelerioisavailableintwospecifications (GA and GL), two transmission options (five-speed manual and new ‘automated manual’ transmission), each with the same one-litre, three-cylinder, petrol engine. Prices start at R109 900 for the entrylevel GA to R135 900 for the range-topping GL auto. The Celerio has what Suzuki calls its CICO (Curve In, Curve Out) design language. It’s also the first Suzuki with the quote-marked gearbox that has full auto and manual shifts as well as creep-function for dealing with traffic. The Celerio is 3.6m long, 1.6m wide and 1.5mhigh:that’s100mmlongerand70mm higher than the outgoing Alto, though it’s the same width. Its wheelbase has increased by 65mm to 2.4m, those wheels
shodwith165/70R14tyreson14”steelrims - alloys optional. The three-cylinder, 55kW/90Nm engine drives through a five-speed gearbox called by Suzuki an ‘automated manual transmission’ - actually a CVT (constantly variable transmission) with five pre-selected ratios activated by a shifter, boldly described by Suzuki as “achieved via an electro-hydraulic actuator, making the use of a clutch pedal unnecessary”. Or you can just let the AMT do its own thing, unless you’re in “rush hour” traffic, when you can switch to “creep” mode - full auto which aids in stop/start traffic. In practice, it works like a traditional automatic; simply pop it into D (drive), N (neutral) or R (reverse). Fuel Consumption is rated at a claimed 4.7 litres/100km for the manual and 4.6 litres/100km on the auto, with emissions of 110g/km and 108g/km respectively. Its turning circle, rated at 9.4m, is one
of the tightest in its class making parking a breeze. Its ride is supple, suspension surprisingly flexible and steering in that sweet spot of neither too light nor too heavy. The differences between the GA and GL are relatively minor. The GA’s grille, exterior mirrors and door releases are finished in contrasting black. It has halogen headlights, a rear wiper/washer and manual external -mirrors. The cabin has a large speedometer, multi-information display, power-assisted steering, manual aircon with a pollen filter and lots of stowage, including a number of bottle-holders. Luggage capacity is 235 litres or 1034 litres with the rear seats folded. The GL variant adds a glossy black grille treatment, chromed accents and external mirrors finished in the body colour. It also

gains fog lights, power for the external mirrors and a rear-screen demister. The black upholstery remains, though isbolsteredwithfabricinsertsforthedoors and chromed door releases. The instrument binnacle gains a rev counter, external temperature display, four power windows, central locking and a gear-shift indicator on the AMT.

The Celerio has the edge in terms of interior space over its competitors and, considering how flooded its market is in terms of rivals, even the slightest advantage could make a huge difference in shifting units.
