EDNESDAY 4 February marks World Cancer Day and the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) emphasises that

cancer is “not beyond us” in terms of cancer control and reducing the impact of the disease.

Acting Cansa CEO Elize Joubert says: “World Cancer Day is important because the global cancer epi-

Fireworks action campaign takes off TANIA SANDBERG

HE Fireworks Action Campaign Toti (Fact) held a meeting on Thursday, calling for public intervention in addressing fireworks.

“Instead of improving, the fireworks situation was worse this season,” says Fact chairperson Lee Lewis.

As a result Fact asked for input fromthepubliconhowtoaddressthe problem in the future. Council was unable to attend the meeting due to a full council meeting. The fire brigade and the explosives unit were also asked to attend, but did not.

Lewis says the majority of people using fireworks were not Toti residents, but visitors.

“Next season Fact plans to place advertisements in publications holidaymakers have access to, to send out a firm message that there is a law against the use of fireworks locally,” she says.

Louise Marais stated: “The facts are, fireworks are illegal, but SAPS does not have the manpower to enforce this law. We can call on the municipality to enforce the law at flats and holiday accommodation. Holidaymakers must follow our laws.

“Anything illegal can be enforced by the municipality. We can request the municipality to put a notice on theirratesandtaxesaccountsthatall big bangs are illegal and that other fireworks are only allowed to be sold one week prior to Diwali and one week prior to New Year’s celebrations.”

The issue of why people are buying fireworks if it is illegal was discussed and it was suggested that the public reports shops selling fireworks in the illegal window period to Fact.

“We launched a community forum last July and are in process of registration. Fact and Toti Crime Forum are part thereof. Recently we also joined forces with My Sapphire Community. The idea is to bring

POWER cuts continue as maintenance problems prevail at Eskom. The utility reported on Monday that the power grid was pressurised due to a unit with a technical fault being taken out of service at Koeberg.

According to the South African Press Association spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said the unit, which produces 900MW, is still down. ON Wednesday the retail prices of both grades of petrol dropped 93c a litre as announced by the Department of Energy on Friday. The latest drop is the biggest with a decrease of 123c and 127c for 95 and 93 grades in January.

Coastal petrol users will pay R9.85 a litre for 93 petrol and R9.90 a litre for 95 petrol, while inland users will pay R10.09 a litre for 93 petrol and R10.31 a litre for 95.

South Africa produced 23 571 millionlitresofliquidfuelproductsin2005, according to SAPIA. “About 36% of the demand is met by synthetic fuels [synfuels], which are produced locally, largely from coal and from natural gas. Products refined locally from imported crude oil meet the remaining 64%” the department of energy reports.

The petrol price in South Africa is linkedtothepriceofcrudeoilininternational markets and is quoted in U.S. dollars per barrel.

According to the department international petrol prices are essentially driven by supply and demand for product in a particular market. Crude oil prices combined with the rand-dollar exchange rate therefore have a major impact on petrol prices.

“A crude-oil refinery’s biggest input cost is crude oil. In order for a refinery to make a profit, the price for the product manufactured from crude oil has to behigherthanthatofthecrudeoilprice.

When crude oil prices increase — as they have over the past months — the petrol price has to increase so that crude-oil refineries are able to cover their costs,” the department stated.

The fuel price changes are, petrol 93c/l decrease (both grades), diesel: 102c/ldecrease(0.05%and0.005%sulphur), IP wholesale: 102c/l decrease, SMNRPforIP,136c/ldecreaseandmaximum LPGas retail price, a 150c/kg decrease.

AIL Schreiner has received various awards ranging from Community Leader of the Year, the Mayor’s Award for Community Development, Servant Leader Award (U.S.) and has twice been nominated for Woman of the Year.

She started her career as a secretary in human resources for an industrialcompanywhereshelaterstudied human resources and took up a lead-

ership position in the company. While studying she felt a calling to become a spokesperson for the “voiceless” as she has been to countless unborn babies and women in crisis.

The Pregnancy Resource Centre (PRC) was her first non-profit initiative, a revolutionary idea at the time in early nineties. The centre, started in her home, provided a shelter for pregnant mothers.

In 2000 Shreiner founded the House of New Beginnings, a home that provided shelter for pregnant,

destitute girls. She started the Better Together network that same year — aplatformforNGOstoshareideas,resources and build relationships.

In the late nineties and early 2000s many pregnancy centres started.

“I realised we needed a unified voice that could speak on behalf of all centres in the country,” she said, and this led to the founding of Africa Cares for Life.

During her time at Africa Cares, Schreiner was approached by the AFM Welfare to start a shelter for

babies and started the Haven of Love in St Winifreds in 2003.

She was approached by Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit to serve on the board and last year she stepped down to take up the position as centre manager.

Gail and husband Gary and will be celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary in March. They have two children Allen and Samantha and three grandchildren. Gary recently retired and the couple enjoy travelling and exploring new places.

SchwartzwasborninJohannesburgandattended Rehoboth Christian School and later Browns School in Durban. At the age of 17, he experienced problems with his eyesight and an ophthalmologist discovered he has a rare strain of an irreversible eye disease and he became blind.

“It was my goal to get matric. I got a Job Access Windows and Speech Computer (Jaw computer) and notes from a teacher. I finished my matric and attendedtheKZNBlindandDeafCollege,whereIlearntmore about my Jaw computer and how to use it properly.

“I studied a telephonic course and passed with three distinctions. I volunteered at the SAPS to answer their phones, something I enjoyed doing.”

Schwartz says he keeps trying new things, started a biltong shop from home and worked at an automation shop.

“Unfortunately, I was retrenched. I have applied for other jobs and remain hopeful. I also completed braille level one and two and got 87%. I play blind cricket, and I made the KwaZulu-Natal team.”

Schwartz believes having a goal is important.

“One day somebody asked Hellen Keller what is worse than being blind, she said, ‘To see and have no vision’. My goal is to be the best motivational speaker, the best biltong maker and get back to being fit. The joy of the Lord is my strength.”

Schwartz’s grandfather Pastor Alan Symons says he has incredible hearing and an amazing memory.

“I think of him as being differently abled. I asked him what he could do if he could see, and he said he wants to see the beach. His friend Tracey Smith, who is also visually impaired, would like to see colour.”

Smith lives in Gauteng, and hopes to relocate to Amanzimtoti. Smith is a braille instructor and qualifiedasatraineroftrainers,anassessorandmoderator and is registered as such with the ETDP Seta.

With millions of people worldwide effected and affected by cancer, it is of the utmost importance that sufferers receive the support and love of those near and dear to them. NGO cares for cats, kittens PRANAV DEEPLAL CAT Walk Toti has been a service offered to residents for three years. It is a privately owned non-profit organisation thatrescuesandfeedsferalcatsandkittens.

“The idea started when my daughter’s cats were lost in transit to Limpopo on a stopover in Ladysmith. About 10 months later they were found alive, but starving,” Cat Walk Toti owner Dayle Robinson says.

Robinson then decided it was her calling to help cats. She is self-financed apart from one sponsor and residents who deliver food every month.

Currently Robinson nurses 82 cats and kittens and feeds the cats at the Athlone Park Pick n Pay centre and at the old Durban airport.

“The feral cats come from people dumping them, or just leaving them when they move. The most important thing is that owners do not sterilise their cats, this leads to unwanted kittens and pregnantmothersbeingdumped,”Robinson says.

She gets calls from the public asking her to help them with strays however, with finances being low she cannot assist all and asks the public to get involved.

Summer heat in a car is dangerous AS we enter the hottest month of the year Amanzimtoti SPCA is experiencing an influx of complaints of dogs left in hot cars.

“Not only is leaving your dog in a hot car,

with no water and no fresh air dangerous, but in summer overexercising your dog can also cause heat exhaustion resulting in death,” says SPCA PRO Michelle Hannan.

Shesaysleavingyouranimalinahotcar can result in prosecution as it is in contravention of the Animal Protection Act. Hannansayswhenit’s22°Coutside,the temperature inside a car can reach 47°C within an hour. Dogs pant to keep cool. In hot stuffy cars dogs can’t cool down.

Hannan says heatstroke develops when dogs can’t reduce their body temperature.

Symptoms include heavy panting, profuse salivation, rapid pulse, red gums or tongue, lethargy, lack of co-ordination, reluctance or inability to rise after collapsing, vomiting, diarrhoea and loss of consciousness.

If you see a dog in a car on a warm day, call the Toti SPCA on 031 904 2424.

The group enjoyed Christian fellowship and shared craft ideas and now the club has more than 40 members who meet in the activities roomatthelibraryonthelastFriday of every month.

“Everybody brings something to eat and we enjoy tea together. The idea is to uplift and motivate. It is a great opportunity to socialise and to meet friends. We normally listen to amotivationalmessageandthenwe have a craft session which gives us an opportunity to ‘talk from the heart’,”memberSannieLiebenberg says.

“It started in Rosemarie Turner’s home and eventually, because our membership expanded so quickly, we moved to my house. And after another growth spurt we searched for a new venue and we have been in the activities room since,” Hazel

Esterhuisen says.

Marie Bowker has been involved in the craft demonstrations and tea table centre flowers since 2008. She is the current chairperson and shared her story on her recent trip to Israel with members on Friday.

She recalls visiting the Sea of Galilee on 25 November 2014.

“At 6am a bus collected us from our hotel — we were part of a tour group. We travelled from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv where collected our guide.

“From there we headed out, travelling not too far from the sea, we passed through Nazareth, Capernaum (Ka-Pur-Nee-Am) and other small places. I will return to these areas, where I felt the presenceoftheHolySpiritverystrongly,” Bowker explained.

“We came to a stop, and looking out of the bus window I could see the water — was I really at the Sea of Galilee. We disembarked and followed our guide who took us to ruins of a temple or synagogue where Yeshua taught. That happened 2000 years ago, but felt so real.”

HE Natal Sharks Supporters (NSS) group on Facebook is considered to be largest Facebook page in South Africa. It has more than 20 000 members worldwide.

TotiphotographerMikevander Watt has been member of NSS almost since its inception.

Recently the Sharks organised a fun day to meet supporters.

“It was of course largely advertised on the NSS Facebook page and we tried to encourage as many people as possible to join us.

“It was an awesome experience. Five NSS members took pictures as the Sharks players interacted with fans,” Van der Watt says.

Shark fans who were unable to attend the event can view the photos on www.amanzimtoti fever.co.za The group’s next big recruitment drive is when the Sharks take on Cheetahs at Kings Park on Valentine’s Day, 14 February.

“Aside from the Sharks game itself, we organised a meet-andgreet on the same day at 1pm. One of the group’s administration members is incidentally having

their 40 birthday.

“We will meet next to the stadium at the College Rovers Clubhouse, the low building on the left-hand side and enter the stadium at 5pm as a group all booked in the same section to watch the game together,” says Van der Watt.

He invites everybody to join the Facebook group and “like” the page and to join them on Valentine’s Day. Fans can expect traditional Sharks behaviour afterwards, especially if we win.

Toti Cycling Club hosts children’s ride JANUARY proved to be the ideal month for cyclists, roadies and mountain bikers, to be churning those pedals.

On Sunday afternoon, 25 January the Toti Cycling Club held a children’s riding day at Lords & Legends.

Guy Watkins bought a ramp and some cones, and 24-odd children, ranging from two and up, whizzed around the chicken run.

There was even a sand pit for them to test their soft-sand riding.

They all got chocolate milks after their ride and the day was enjoyed by all.

She was the first woman home.

Some Toti runners ran and walked the 16km and 32km run in Durban this weekend.

This was a tough run going to Westville and returning to the Berea. Irene Bohmber was the third lady walker home in the 16km walk. Belinda Stange had a personal best in the 32km run.

The club championships — the Nosa Hillcrest 42.2km — is on Sunday, 8February.Thereisalsoa21.1kmrun/ walk.
