Kuswag’s Jeaneme Kuhn attained three distinctions. Her advice to this year’s matrics is to study hard from the start and work through the many questionnaires. SAPS seeks new recruits THE South African Police Service invites youth of all races, men and women, to join the police. There are vacancies existing for trainees (entry level constables) at units, stations and at the provincial office of KwaZulu-Natal. Applicants must be able to meet the following requirements — they must be South African citizens; be physically, medically and mentally healthy, have Grade 12 or equivalent qualification; having a code 8 driver’s licence will be an added advantage; must be between the ages of 18 and 30; be able to speak two official languages; no tattoos; within the mass and height restriction — applicants should have BMI (body mass index) of less than 30 and have no criminal record or cases pending. Application forms must be obtained from your nearest police station. The forms will also be available on the SAPS website. Completed application forms, together with the following documents must be returned to your recruitment centre (your local SAPS office should be able to help with this) — certified copies of identity document, certified copy of Grade 12 certificate (matric certificate), certified copy of driver’s licence and proof of residence. The SAPS is making a special appeal to persons from minority groups to apply for these vacancies to ensure the SAPS is able to meet its obligation in terms of employment equity guidelines. The SAPS indicates that it is not receiving sufficient applications from white, Indian and coloured communities and urge school leavers from those communities to consider employment in the SAPS. It is the intention of the SAPS to promote representivity through the filling of these posts. — Supplied.

APTAIN Charlene van der Spuy addressed a group of women on safety at Athlone Park Library recently. “Never do activities alone. “Take someone with you when walking or jogging, shopping or going to the bank,” she advises. “Do not withdraw large sums of cash and when you plan to withdraw, take somebody with you. “When you are inside the

bank, speak softly to the teller so that others cannot overhear how much money you are carrying. “When visiting a shopping mall, make sure you park your vehicle where it is lit. Keep your car keys in your hand, do not createanopportunitybysearching for your keys. “If you have to put children in their car seats, look around and make sure no one is watching you,” Van der Spuy said. “Do not follow the same route to and from your house — change routine sometimes.

Three die in N2 crash near Toti THREE people died following an accident on the N2 north-bound near Amanzimtoti on 20 December, 2014. “Netcare 911 paramedics and other services found that a light delivery vehicle had crashed against a barrier resulting in the three people travelling on the back of the vehicle being ejected from the vehicle. The three people landed down an embankment of approximately 30 metres on the side of the road,” reports Netcare 911’s Santi Steinmann. She says upon assessment of the three occupants they found that all three had died. Exact detail surrounding the cause of the accident and preceding events are unknown at this stage and will remain the subject of a police investigation. — Netcare 911.

‘Gone fishing’ >> One five-day trip yielded 89 sailfish TANIA SANDBERG

OCAL motor vehicle dealership manager Mike Gradwell is well-known in the community for his great sense of humour, honesty, expertise in vehicle sales, and his love of fishing. Born in 1960 in Addington Hospital, Gradwell is a millwright by trade. “I did not like the trade and I thought I would try the motor industry.” In 1996 he joined Village Mall Auto in Amanzimtoti. “In 1999 I was asked by the owner of King Kars, Rowan Hampson, to join them and I ran the used car section for four years. Later I joined the McCarthy Group in both new and used-

vehicle divisions. I rejoined Rowan in 2012 to run the Hyundai Amanzimtoti dealership and have been here since.” Gradwell’s advice to used-vehicle buyers is not to buy privately. “Car dealerships put used cars through several checks. Too many people come to the dealership with used cars they are hoping to trade in, only to find it is not in a good condition or the vehicle they purchased privately has been accident damaged and badly repaired.” His philosophy is to be honest with every customer. “I will tell a customer if I think they should not change their vehicle.” Gradwell says he fishes as much as he can and enjoys both fresh and saltwater fishing. “My favourite spots are the Zambezi,

business instead of going to other areas. “If I need something I look locally and then negotiate pricing. “People tend to buy elsewhere and then want to service their vehicles locally. If they support local, local businesses will also have the resources to help the community.”

LESLEY Hustler better known as “Lel”, was born in Edenvale on 9 September, 1931 and moved to Toti in 1968. She worked at Triomf Fertilisers, NMi and Republican Press. Lesley will be remembered by the Toti traffic department from the seventies and eighties as the lady who took them cake every Saturday morning. Her grandson Brett played soccer from the age of five and Lesley hardly missed a game. Her granddaughter Toni was involved in dancing and you would always find Lesley helping at the dancing shows and at parents’ watching days. In 2009 Lesley moved into Ponsettia Park. In June 2010 she developed cellulitis in her legs and had to move in with her daughter Christine Carroll as she needed 24-hour care. Sadlyshewasconstantlyinpainfromthenon, having suffered with Parkinsons and osteoarthrisit. On 10 December, 2014 she peacefully drifted off and was finally free from the pain she had suffered for so long. We would love to hear what your 2014 highlights were, and what you see for 2015, so send us your photos and send us your stories via email. The downside to this festive season, with its glorious weather, is that statistics indicate that KZN holds the

record for being one of the worst provinces for road accident fatalities, with the Eastern Cape following close behind, and as the festive season has not ended for everyone, with many still on holiday, Toti Fever urges you to drive safely and arrive alive wherever you may be.

Is Ramaphosa one of our solutions? THE letter titled “JZ plays Santa”, Amanzimtoti Fever 19 December, 2014, refers. I read with wonderment that Cyril Ramaphosa is taking over the helm at Eskom, the post office and SAA, moves that are long overdue. Why it has taken so long and used millions of thousands of taxpayers’ money is beyond me, but nevertheless, something has to be done, especially with Nkandla being in the dark, along with the rest of South Africa. This astute businessman is perfect for the job, and another job he should pursue would be that of president, but hold on, I’m getting way ahead of myself. Let’s see how he does with his new mandates first — then we watch and see. Is South Africa the only country in

the world that tries to rectify something once the horse has bolted, or am I being naive. The government and the ruling party are like ostriches, burying their heads in the sand (although facts reveal that they don’t) hoping that no one will notice what’s going on around them — the chaos, the lawlessness, the crime, fraud, the corruption, the nepotism — and where is JZ, I ask. Well that remains to be seen as he hasn’t been heard of a lot lately — oh yes, mostlyhe’soverseastryingtorattle up trade with other countries, while “our Rome burns”. Ramaphosa, please help us get out of this mess as we are following the same path as Zimbabwe went and getting there faster every day. Eyes wide open IIlovo

CONGRATULATIONS on the first two editions of the new Amanzimtoti Fever. Both issues were a pleasure to read and with the focus on our beloved town and its residents, it is a force to be reckoned with. To councillor André Beetge, thank you so much for your hard work — you are always around when someone needs assistance and you are on top of your game every day. We are fortunate to have a councillor of this calibre. There are some concerns residents’ have — crime, street children, beggars, drug and alcohol abuse, prostitutes — but I think these issues are being addressed by stakeholders. One question, why were crosswords and Suduko dropped? Miss Nellie Athlone Park • Editor responds: It was a company decision to drop crosswords and Suduko in AmanzimtotiFeverandratherusethespace for news and events.

What happened to law enforcement? WHAT is the point of putting up signs prohibiting fires, illegal parking and publicdrinkingiftheselawsarenotenforced by the authorities? New Year’s day at Baggies beach waschaotic.Twelvecarsparkedforthe day in the emergency and disabled parking area. What would have happenediftherehadbeenanemergency?

Braai fires all over, even a fire on the paving against the wall of Baggies building. These same people were drinking, dancing in the road, preventing traffic from moving and smashing beer bottles on the road. Therewasnotalawenforcementofficer to be seen in the area at any time. The security guard made himself

scarce, obviously intimidated by the situation. Where were the traffic police or policemen? This was a disgraceful situation for the decent beach-goers to endure. I feel most strongly that a response from the authorities is owed to the community. Local resident and ratepayer Amanzimtoti

SAPS get thumbs up I’M currently on holiday in Amanzimtoti and staying in Strandburg flats. On 16 December, 2014, I was very impressed with the quality of service the Amanzimtoti police provided in the parking lot next to the flats we are staying in. I may only be a visitor, but I am 100% sure that the police in Bloemfontein can’t even begin to compete with the standard of service you provide. May your wonderful service and incredible way of handling the most difficult situations rub off on the rest of the country. An-Mari Coetzee • Letter shortened.

When does a car become a classic? >> 1969 VW Beetle is considered a classic

I

T’S a definition dilemma and a burning question among car enthusiasts — when does a car become a classic? Agreeing on an impalpable point in time that constitutes a “Classic Car” definition is rather challenging. While one can consider a veteran car to be one built before World War 1, a vintage car to be one built before 1930 and postvintage a classification used for cars built between 1930 and the end of World War 2, there is definitely a grey area on what cars built after this point are considered to be. Some may consider a car made in the fifties as a classic. Although there is no pre-

cise definition, the Classic Car Club of Americaconsidersacartobeclassicifaged between 30 and 49 years, and modern classics are defined as cars aged between 15 and 25. Aside from age, there also has to be some aesthetic appeal for a car to be considered a classic and appreciated as such. Whether this be the design, colour or timeless engineering, a classic beauty needs to have a somewhat subtle envy factor. So would a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle be considered a classic? Absolutely. The Volkswagen Type 1, affectionately theVolkswagenBugorBeetle, isrenowned for being one of the first rear-engined cars

ever launched. With more than 21 million manufactured since its inception in 1938, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform worldwide and, as the years have passed, various models have come and gone. Despite this, the Beetle has most certainly stood the test of time given that the “new Beetle” was launched in 1998. Placed fourth in an international poll for the world’s most influential car of the 20th century undertaken in 1999, the VW Beetle will go down in history as one of the most classic cars. Despite being around for over 70 years, it never loses its appeal. As an ideal first collector car, the Beetle is a firm favourite among classic car enthusiasts.

Vehicle first-aid kit essentials DRIVERS should always do their best to be prepared to respond to any emergency. Even though you may not be trained medical professionals there are often small bits of assistance one can provide with first-aid and an effective and fast response to smaller emergencies. Arrive Alive advises drivers to travel withafirst-aidkitinvehiclesorhaveone at home. Many of us could do with some advice on what’s needed in such an emergency medical kit so Arrive Alive approached road-safety partner ER24 with questions about emergency preparedness — and that emergency kit. A first-aid kit should not be a hassle to take with you on holiday or keep in your vehicle. A good size is usually something thatcanfitcomfortablyintoyourcubby hole or one size larger that you keep in the boot of your vehicle.

What would be the most important pieces of equipment and supplies in such an emergency medical kit? Items to treat burn wounds, cuts, bruises, splint a fracture, band aids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for insect bites and stings as well as disinfectant. If you prefer to keep medicine in your first-aid kit — headache tablets, antinausea and vomiting. It is important that only a responsible adult make use of these medications and that no prescription medications are kept in the first-aid kit. Also do not administer your prescription medication to someone else, even if you use the same medication. What would be the most important essentials to carry in a mini-kit. Bandages, band aids and anti-septic solution. Sunblock would also be a good item to keep in your first-aid kit as well as after-sun lotion. The content

ular outdoorsman you would know what happened before and what you needed. What are the most common mistakes amateurs tend to make when trying to perform first aid? Be smart and keep the right things in your first-aid kit. The most important things are a CPR mouthpiece should you need to perform CPR, something to stop bleeding and splint fractures. This includes band aids, bandages, dressings, strapping, gauze etc. Probably the most important of all is medical gloves. Are there specific measures the amateur responder in an emergency should rather avoid and leave to the trained professionals? If you are unsure contact ER24 on 084 124 and ask for medical advice. Now aged 13, has been offered a sponsorship at Kenako in George and will start high school at this golfing school. “Normally I practice two to three hours per day. When I play golf, I forget about all the pains of life,” he says. Graham says children should ideally start playing golf at the age of four or five and he is always looking for new talent. Graham is considering starting a driving range-practice facility, which would be family orientated. For further information contact Graham at the Pro Shop at Amanzimtoti Golf Club on 031 902 4144. .
