APPLICATIONS OF NANOSCIENCE JULY 31 - AUGUST 12, 2016
Learn the basics of how to propose a scientific research project using current approaches in the field of nanoscience. Work on a team project to experience a scientific research proposal process. Participants will better understand what makes nanoscience and nanotechnology one of the most exciting fields of research today, how to read a technical journal article, and what is essential to create a new scientific research project. Admission is by instructor consent. Mandatory residential plan.
ART SESSION A: JULY 5 - 15, 2016 | SESSION B: JULY 18 - 29, 2016
Increase artistic skills in categories such as painting, drawing, digital photography, or sculpture. Sessions are structured around studio work, lectures, presentations, field trips, and a final exhibition. Admission is by instructor consent. Optional residential plan.
DANCE / PERFORMING ARTS INTENSIVE JUNE 18 - 26, 2016
Mixes the disciplines of dance, theater, music, and social activism. This interdisciplinary program helps students learn to choreograph their own work using new tools and culminates with a final performance. Admission is by instructor consent. Mandatory residential plan.
DESIGN MEDIA ARTS JULY 10 - 22, 2016
Intensive introductory program in four aspects of design: graphic, web, game, and audio-visual. Using the most current software and technology, this program combines lab and one-on-one instruction, allowing students to develop projects and build design portfolios. Mandatory residential plan.
GAME LAB JULY 25 - AUGUST 5, 2016
Develop the fundamental skills to create games and game art that express a personal and subjective approach to game making. Offers a unique blend of artistic vision with technological expertise. Commuter-only program.
MOCK TRIAL JULY 17 - 23, 2016
Experience an intensive introduction to the nation’s legal system that culminates in a public mock trial presentation. Learn about direct and cross examination techniques, exhibits and impeachments, objections, rules of evidence, and witness portrayal. Participants will visit the UCLA School of Law and Los Angeles Federal Courthouse. Mandatory residential plan.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS JUNE 19 - 25, 2016
Simulating the way governments work together, this program introduces students to international diplomacy and foreign affairs. Students take on the role of a diplomat, engage in independent research, and debate on one of the many United Nations committees. Mandatory residential plan.
NANOSCALE MICROSCOPY LAB JUNE 26 - JULY 1, 2016
Explore three key microscopy techniques for nanoscience research: fluorescence microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and electron microscopy with an overview on the modalities of microscopy in collaboration with the California NanoSystems Institute. Prepares students for college-level writing challenges and addresses essentials such as timed essay exams, and composing effective emails and personal statements for college applications. All activities will demystify the differences between college and high school writing. Commuter-only program.

The BruinCard is your official university identification card. It allows you to borrow library books, work out in the campus gym and receive discounts at a selection of local businesses. If you are living on campus, you will use it for meals and dorm access, among other conveniences. It can also be used as a debit card if you set up an account and deposit money. You can apply for your Bruin Card after completing registration and enrollment.
Most students find living on campus to be a convenient and enjoyable option during Summer Sessions. UCLA offers furnished residence halls and residential suites within a short walking distance of classrooms, libraries and recreational facilities. Housing is available for periods of six, eight, 10 and 12 weeks. If you prefer the independence of living off-campus, UCLA also offers University Apartments near campus.

Most Summer Institute programs offer mandatory or optional housing with full supervision. The safety of program participants is very important and ensured through 24-hour front desk service, camera survelliance, and key access entry. Trained program counselors provide supervision throughout the program, and are housed in residence halls with program participants. The University of California Police Department serves the UCLA campus and is located just a short distance from residence halls. Designated lead officers patrol university housing ensuring security and safety of all campus community members. The Writing Workshop and Game Lab Summer Institute do not offer housing with supervision.
Students who live in University housing can choose among several meal plans. Our award-winning dining halls are known for high quality food and service. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available in the dining halls and other campus eateries.

The Wooden Center is the UCLA campus gym. It offers a range of sports facilities, including basketball and racquetball courts, a weight room, rock climbing wall, fitness equipment and classes in yoga, dance and martial arts. Sunset Recreation Center, located on the Hill, offers picnic areas, volleyball courts and swimming pools. Throughout campus, you will find swimming pools, tennis courts, soccer fields and running track.
