CAREER RESOURCES INTROVERTS AND EXTROVERTS IN THE WORKPLACE Typically, extroverts are believed to be outgoing while introverts are thought to be shy. While this may be true is some cases, extroversion and introversion has less to do with personality and more to do with the way in which people respond to environmental stimuli. Extroverts derive energy from social situations while introverts thrive on having time alone. Understanding this distinction is essential to having successful interactions with colleagues in the workplace.

An estimated 75 percent of the general population is extroverted (Tieger & Barron-Tieger, 1995), and reward systems and job recognition generally align with extroverts’ skills. Extroverts tend to speak openly and often about their projects and successes, and they are skilled at marketing themselves. Meanwhile, introverts are often passed over for leadership positions because they tend to take time to think before speaking.

Here is some insight into introverted preferences: • • • • • •

Ask for their opinion. Introverts often have great ideas, but are accustomed to working independently and may not openly share these ideas.

Provide advance notice. Introverts like to be prepared, so be sure to share meeting agendas in advance to give them time to process and prepare their thoughts prior to the meeting.

Utilize email. Introverts prefer to communicate in writing so give them the opportunity to provide feedback/thoughts via email.

Delegate. Introverts enjoy working independently so give them room to grow and learn without interruptions and micromanaging.

Be flexible with recognition. Introverts prefer to be praised in intimate settings so don’t assume that you should reward them in public.

Recognize space: Introverts prefer quiet time to concentrate and dislike interruptions.

Both introverts and extroverts make great leaders and employees. They simply interact differently and bring a unique set of values to the workplace. Encourage your organization to utilize Myers-Briggs or Keirsey Temperament Sorter assessments to understand your colleagues’ unique skill sets and learn how to better function as a team!

ALUMNI CORNER ALUMNI AND PROFESSOR HOST ANNUAL VISIT BY CHINESE PLANNERS TO L.A. COUNTY REGIONAL PLANNING

Snejana Daily (MPP ’12) appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network show “Operation Change”. The 10-part series, which aired on OWN, follows the founders of the Starkey Hearing Foundation – Bill and Tani Austin and their son Steven Sawalich – as they travel to the world’s most impoverished countries to give people hearing aids and partner with local organizations to empower and improve communities around the world. The documentary series tells the stories of people facing challenges across the globe, and highlights the work of people and agencies making a difference. You can watch past episodes on the Operation Change website.

The group discussed planning and politics in the unincorporated areas of the county, zoning enforcement in South Central Los Angeles, the Willowbrook TOD project, the countywide General Plan, which the department is close to completing, permitting and zoning in the county, annexation/incorporation of county territory, and comparisons of planning in China and Los Angeles. Meetings like these are enriching and beneficial for both Chinese scholars and alumni.
