Welcome to the Careers Fairs I’m Carol Sanderson, Head of Careers at UCLan. I would like to welcome you to the Careers Fair Booklet 2016.

We have two Careers Fairs this year.

You can find out all the details of the employers attending each of the fairs in this booklet.

Please do make sure to attend at least one of the fairs, or both, and talk to the employers to find out what opportunities they have available. There will be a range of opportunities on offer from graduate jobs, internships, placements and volunteering opportunities.

If you can you should prepare for the Careers Fairs in advance. Look at this booklet and decide which employers to approach on the days of the fairs, research the companies, and prepare your CV as you will be able to then give it to employers that you meet where you might be interested in opportunitities they are offering.

One of the most important elements of any careers fair is to make sure to ‘talk’ with the employers. Don’t just walk around the fairs picking up the freebies but communicate with the employer representatives at their stalls.

Benefits of the Fairs The UCLan Careers Fairs serve as a valuable resource as you explore career options and start your graduate career.

You can: • Discover what is out there in the world of work from a single location • Explore different options and career paths • Meet & talk with representatives from a broad spectrum of companies • Obtain valuable interview and job search experience • Learn about potential placement opportunities • Discuss available positions and submit your CV in person to exhibitors • Develop a network of contacts to help get you that dream job

Navigating the Fairs • Do Your Research - Learn who is participating in the careers fairs and create a list of organisations that you are interested in. Then research their products / services and employment needs.

• Be Prepared - You should have several copies of your CV handy and have easy access to them.

• Dress to Impress - Show employers that you are serious; dress professionally.

• Network - Don’t limit your interactions to exhibitors. Talk to fellow job seekers at the event about different employers, possible job openings and more.

• Follow Up - Make sure to follow-up with anyone you talked to at the fair through email within 24 hours. Asking for business cards makes this a lot easier. After the fair, you should consider connecting with recruiters through LinkedIn. 4

30 Second Introduction When meeting new individuals in a professional setting, like networking events and career fairs, it is important to make a strong first impression.

Through your 30-second introduction you will be able to quickly and effectively market yourself to others.

Your 30-second introduction should: • Identify who you are • Highlight a few strengths and accomplishments • Show what you can bring to the company (skills, contacts, experience etc) • Be precise and concise

Final Year Preparations As you enter your final year at university, it is essential to get started on applications as soon as possible. Getting these out of the way at the beginning of the academic year before your final exams and dissertation will help remove unnecessary stress and distractions.

Some graduate employers open applications for graduate training schemes very early, so you should begin checking opportunities on the UCLan Careers website (CareerEDGE) as soon as possible.

The majority of graduate schemes will open applications between September and December. Apply as early as possible, as there can be tough competition for popular employers and sectors; many schemes will fill up extremely quickly!

Prepare your CV CV Do’s and Don’ts To get the most out of the Careers Fairs prepare your CV before the fairs so you can hand it to employers on the day!

If you need help writing or improving your CV, call in and see the Careers Team based in Foster Building.

DO: • Use 2 sides of A4 in a clear font, preferably 11 or 12pt in size.

• Put relevant information or key selling points on the first page.

• Allocate space according to the importance of the information (e.g. Expand on relevant experience or skills, not the ones you have had the longest).

• Use underlining or bold for emphasis and space information evenly over two pages.

• When writing about your education and employment, adopt a positive style, highlighting the learning and skills you have developed.

AVOID: • Large blocks of text. Instead, you can break the text up by using bullet points instead.

• Making spelling or grammatical errors: check, double-check and triple-check! Ask for a second opinion, they might catch something you’ve missed.

• Leaving long gaps in your ‘Career history’ section. Try to account for any gaps by using phrases like, ‘Six months work and travel in South America’ or ‘Career break and fulltime parent 2002 - 2006’.

• Information like Date of Birth, Ethnicity & Marital Status.

• Attaching photographs unless asked.

Prepare your CV CV Presentation • Be Creative Think carefully how you arrange your information into an attractive format; do not to leave large empty spaces or cram too much content on one page. Try searching for examples of effective CVs online for inspiration, but do not copy them either. Chances are, the employers will be familiar with the designs and will think that you lack imagination and associate you with unoriginality and laziness.

• Be Concise The CV is aiming to get you an interview, don’t list everything you have ever done, aim to be selective.

• Be Consistent This covers both the content of the CV and the visual side of things.

For example, use the same font throughout the document and keep dates for education/work listed on the same side of the page.

• Be Positive Use positive language and try not to self-deprecate. Write a CV that highlights your strengths and your transferable skills.

• Be Honest You must market yourself, but never over-estimate your skills or capability. Although a CV does allow you to omit details (such as exam resits) which you may prefer an employer not to know about never give inaccurate or misleading information.

5 Minute Guides to getting a CareerEDGE UCLan Careers have created an online course called ‘5 minute guides to getting a CareerEDGE’ which covers all aspects of the recruitment process from searching for jobs, applying for jobs and going to interview.
