Dr. Marcelo M. Suárez-Orozco became Dean of the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE&IS) on September 1, 2012. Dean Suárez-Orozco’s research focuses on conceptual and empirical problems in the areas of cultural psychology and psychological anthropology with a focus on the study of mass migration, globalization, and education. He most recently served as co-director of Immigration Studies at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development with his wife, Professor Carola SuárezOrozco.

On March 19, 2013 LSFA had it’s biggest meeting of the academic year, welcoming new and previous members. The member survey results were discussed at length and feedback was received as to what type of programming members are interested in.

LSFA Board Members will take member feedback into consideration for future programming. In fact, several Spring 2013 activities were organized to implement the sur vey results. Me m b e r participation will be crucial in our success.

NEWS / UPCOMING EVENTS Fiesta Mexicana, presented by the Grupo Folklorico de UCLA, was held on Sunday, May 26 at Royce Hall. It was a full house at the event, attended by families, friends, and UCLA community members. The 2-hr long enga gement presented dances f rom 5 different regions of Mexico; a total of 24 enlivening dances were performed. Five live bands provided the music for each of the regional dances.

Do you know an undergraduate doing research in the sciences? If so please let them know that they can get paid for The Vilcek Foundation is seeking applicants for it! The UC LEADS Program is one of the most prestigious the 2014 Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in fellowships awarded by the UC system; it provides UCLA upper- Biomedical Science. Accepting applications from division undergraduate students in STEM fields with educational young, foreign-born researchers age 38 and under experiences that prepare them to assume positions of leadership in academia, industry, government, and public service.
