MEMBER PROFILES Vivian Salazar, LSFA President

Dr. Sonia Zarate, LSFA Vice President

Vivian Salazar is a Chicana first-generation college graduate from UCLA and has over 23 years of service to the university. In 2010, she was awarded the Chancellor’s Diversity scholarship that allowed her to participate in the Latino Leadership Institute at the Anderson Graduate School of Management. Vivian is the Director of the College Counseling unit in the Academic Advancement Program and has dedicated her professional career to providing assistance to first-generation college and low-income students of color by empowering them with the knowledge, guidance, and motivation to thrive in their undergraduate career. She has been an active participant in LSFA for the past 10 years and has been elected on the board for the last 5 years.

Sonia is a first-generation Mexican-American, firstgeneration-to-attend-college, and the only person in her family to have an advanced degree. Sonia received her BS in Biology from Cal Poly Pomona and her PhD in Plant Molecular Biology from UC Riverside. In addition to her role as Vice President of the LSFA, she is the Advisor to the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science Chapter and directs various undergraduate research programs as Associate Director in the Undergraduate Research Center-Sciences; a majority of the programs she directs are geared towards increasing diversity in the sciences. In January, Sonia will transition to her new role as Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research at the University of San Diego.

MEMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Dr. Oscar F. Gil Garcia Dr. Gil-Garcia, new member, from the Anthropology Department, joined LSFA to increase networks among Latina/o faculty and staff, learn about opportunities for professional development, and participate in increasing access and community among underserved Latina/os.

The recent effort to support students from La Cumbre Junior High School resulted in $200 raised to purchase healthy snacks for the 70 students who visited UCLA on November 22, 2013. They sent a thank you card to LSFA to show their gratitude.

Dr. Gil-Garcia was recently awarded a two-week training opportunity by the National Institutes of Minority Health and Health Disparities in Bethesda, Maryland. He also presented a paper, ----“Perceptions of Masculinity and Sexual Health Among California Migrant Farmworkers,” at the Román Luján, UCLA PhD candidate in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese was awarded the XII Amado Nervo National Poetry Award on November 28, 2013 in Nayarit, Mexico. Román is UPCOMING EVENTS a native of Coahuila, Mexico. He has written at UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center least five poetry books.
